Expert systems in river basin management

The basic features of expert systems are outlined and illustrated, and the potential of such an approach as an aid to decision-making in the field of river basin management is explored. Work undertaken towards the development of an expert system for the operational control of a wastewater treatment plant is described. Further areas of potential application are discussed, including data utilization.     

Design of project management systems

A logical, notational tool, called the Bachmann diagramming technique, is described. This is used for documenting a project management system while securing user participation in the design of the system. The method has been used in some Danish multiproject organizations (roads, railways) where systems now take care of grants, budgets and cash-flow, resources, contracts, accounting, activities, results control, stocks and sales.     

Implementation of project management systems

For a large, complex project to be completed within its budget and time limits, it is important that a standard data and documentation codification system should be implemented at the start of the project. Using practical examples, the setting up and operation of such a system is described. The importance of the system as a progress monitor is explained.     

Expert systems for assessing traffic management projects

The Road Traffic Authority of Victoria is developing Expert Systems which will assist with the administration and development of its Traffic Management Services Program. These systems will enable project initiators outside the Authority to assess the likelihood of their projects gaining support and funding from the Authority. This paper describes the area of application, the process of selecting an appropriate Expert System shell, the methods used to extract expert knowledge, the problems experienced, and the initial results of this work. Progress to date is very encouraging and the application of Expert Systems is expected to spread into other areas of the Authority's work.

Facilitating project management education through groups as systems

Project management education is currently facing several challenges to help people deal more effectively with the complexities of their future work. Students' exposure to ‘real’ project situations in which they can use, develop, and reflect on their skills as well as learn from each other has become essential and in need of further improvements. This paper presents a group-based approach to project management education which uses the notion of a ‘group’ as a system in order to develop students' individual awareness of and abilities to deal with both expected and unexpected project situations. The approach aims at nurturing and fostering students' involvement in project situations whilst challenging them to go beyond their own learning comfort zones. Reflections from our experience of using this approach in several courses in UK higher education institutions lead us to identify its benefits, different strategies that students use to respond to challenges, and new possibilities to continue improving project management education.     

Development of project management systems for major projects

The use of top level management systems is considered, and their main features are compared with classic approaches. Factors affecting the development and use of such systems are highlighted.

The role of monitoring and shirking in information systems project management

Agency theory offers a foundation for explaining the impact of project monitoring on project success. This study applied agency theory to survey 428 information systems project managers concerning their project monitoring, shirking by systems developers, and project success. Greater project monitoring via planning and meetings predicted less shirking, while greater monitoring via responsibilities and comparison did not. Less shirking via poor focus predicted increased project success, while less shirking via loafing did not. These findings have implications for project managers and project management researchers.

从成本控制和进度控制两方面探讨了国际项目管理中的项目控制,指出通过项目控制在项目实施过程中对项目的进度和成本进行跟踪、分析和预测,可以给决策层提供一个全面的项目进展情况,以确保项目管理目标的实现。
