A new kind of Ni-Co–base disk alloys, named TMW alloys, has been developed on the basis of our innovative concept. Full-scale pancakes (440 mm in diameter and 65 mm in thickness) with an average grain size of about 10 μm were successfully manufactured from TMW alloys by a conventional cast-and-wrought (C&W) processing route. The property assessments of the pancakes indicate that TMW alloys are superior to C&W U720Li alloys in tensile strength and in creep resistance, while the performances of low-cycle fatigue (LCF) and fatigue crack growth (FCG) are comparative.  相似文献

This paper proposes a method for alloy composition screening using the creep property of a single crystal (SC) for designing new Ni-base powder metallurgy (P/M) turbine disc superalloys. A commercial Ni-base disc alloy, U720Li®, a Ni-Co-base disc alloy, TMW-4M3, and a Ni-base conventionally cast alloy, TM-47, were selected for investigation. Their SC and P/M samples were prepared such that their γ/γ′ structures were similar. Moreover, tensile creep tests were performed on SC samples, and compressive creep tests were performed on SC and P/M samples. The tensile creep test results of SC samples at 1073 K (800 °C) and 735 MPa indicate that 0.2 and 1 pct creep times, as well as rupture life, are long in the order of TM-47 SC, TMW-4M3 SC, and U720Li SC. These results simulate the intragranular creep resistances of the corresponding P/M alloys. Furthermore, there is no significant difference in 0.2 and 1 pct compressive creep times between the SC and P/M samples of each alloy. Additionally, the 0.2 and 1 pct creep times of tensile and compressive creep tests of every alloy had an identical order. Therefore, alloy composition screening using SC creep property enables the design of new disc alloys with excellent creep resistance.

A family of creep-resistant, alumina-forming austenitic (AFA) stainless steel alloys is under development for structural use in fossil energy conversion and combustion system applications. The AFA alloys developed to date exhibit comparable creep-rupture lives to state-of-the-art advanced austenitic alloys, and superior oxidation resistance in the ~923 K to 1173 K (650 °C to 900 °C) temperature range due to the formation of a protective Al2O3 scale rather than the Cr2O3 scales that form on conventional stainless steel alloys. This article overviews the alloy design approaches used to obtain high-temperature creep strength in AFA alloys via considerations of phase equilibrium from thermodynamic calculations as well as microstructure characterization. Strengthening precipitates under evaluation include MC-type carbides or intermetallic phases such as NiAl-B2, Fe2(Mo,Nb)-Laves, Ni3Al-L12, etc. in the austenitic single-phase matrix. Creep, tensile, and oxidation properties of the AFA alloys are discussed relative to compositional and microstructural factors.  相似文献

The effects of both Li modification and cooling rate on the microstructure and tensile properties of an in-situ prepared Al-15 pct Mg2Si composite were investigated. Adding 0.3 pct Li reduced the average size of Mg2Si primary particles from ~30 to ~6 μm. The effect of cooling rate was investigated by the use of a mold with different section thicknesses from 3 to 9 mm. The results show a refinement of primary particle size as a result of both Li additions and cooling rate increases, and their effects are additive. Similarly, both effects increased ultimate tensile stress (UTS) and elongation values. The thin sections show somewhat unexpectedly low and scattered tensile results attributed to the casting defects observed in fracture surfaces. The Li-modified alloy displays serrated yielding behavior that is not fully explained here. The refinement by Li and enhanced cooling rate is explained in terms of an analogy with the effect of Sr and cooling rate in Al-Si alloys, and is ultimately attributed to the effect of the alkali and alkaline earth metals deactivating oxide double films (bifilms) suspended in Al melts as favored substrates for intermetallics.  相似文献

The impact of micro-alloying on tensile behavior at strain rates in various ranges is examined using five types of extruded Mg-0.3 at. pct Mn–0.1 at. pct X ternary alloys, where X is selected as a common element, Al, Li, Sn, Y or Zn. Microstructural observations reveal that the average grain size of these extruded alloys is between 1 and 3 μm, and these micro-alloying elements segregate at grain boundaries. In room temperature tensile and compression tests, these results show that the mechanical properties and deformation behavior are influenced by the micro-alloying element, even as a small addition of 0.1 at. pct. Mg–Mn–Y and Mg–Mn-Zn alloys show higher strength and smaller strain rate sensitivity (m-value) among the present alloys, owing to the rate-controlling mechanism as dislocation slip. On the other hand, the Mg–Mn–Li alloy exhibits the largest elongation to failure in tension and the highest strain rate sensitivity, associated with high contribution of grain boundary sliding to deformation. These differences are due to the grain boundary segregation of the micro-alloying elements. Compared to the common Mg alloys, the present ternary alloys also show a trade-off relationship between strength and ductility, which is similar to that of the well-known Mg alloys; however, these properties of the Mg–Mn system ternary alloys could be controlled via the type of micro-alloying elements with a chemical content of 0.1 at. pct.

The effect of annealing on microstructural stability, precipitate evolution, and mechanical properties of cryorolled (CR) Al 7075 alloy was investigated in the present work employing hardness measurements, tensile test, X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The solution-treated bulk Al 7075 alloy was subjected to cryorolling to produce fine grain structures and, subsequently, annealing treatment to investigate its thermal stability. The recrystallization of CR Al 7075 alloys started at an annealing temperature of 423 K (150 °C) and completed at an annealing temperature of 523 K (250 °C). The CR Al 7075 alloys with ultrafine-grained microstructure are thermally stable up to 623 K (350 °C). Within the range of 523 K to 623 K (250 °C to 350 °C), the size of small η phase particles and AlZr3 dispersoids lies within 300 nm. These small precipitate particles pin the grain boundaries due to the Zener pinning effect, which suppresses grain growth. The hardness and tensile strength of the CR Al 7075 alloys was reduced during the annealing treatment from 423 K to 523 K (150 °C to 250 °C) and subsequently it remains constant.  相似文献

The tensile deformation behavior of extruded samples of Mg-0.8 pct Gd and Mg-0.8 pct Gd-0.5 pct Mn-0.45 pct Sc (at. pct) alloys has been studied. Both alloys exhibit serrated flow when they are tensile tested at temperatures ranging from 150 °C to 300 °C and at strain rates of 1.67 × 10−4 s−1 to 1.67 × 10−2 s−1, and this serrated flow behavior is significantly affected by postextrusion heat treatments. Combined with observations made by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and three-dimensional atom probe (3DAP), the serrated flow is attributed to dynamic interactions between solute atoms and gliding dislocations. It is suggested that Gd atoms in the solid solution matrix of magnesium are mainly responsible for the serrations in the two alloys. The additions of Mn and Sc to the Mg-Gd alloy strengthen the dynamic solute-dislocation interactions and lead to a lower critical strain and larger stress drops of the serrated flow in the Mg-Gd-Mn-Sc alloy.  相似文献

Zinc shows great promise as a bioabsorbable metal; however, the low tensile strength of pure zinc limits its application for endovascular stent purposes. In this study, a new Zn-xLi alloy (with x = 2, 4, 6 at. pct) was prepared by induction melting in an argon atmosphere and processed through hot rolling. Structures of the formulated binary alloys were characterized by X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. Mechanical testing showed that the incorporation of Li into Zn increased ultimate tensile strength from <120 MPa (pure Zn) to >560 MPa (x = 6 at. pct). In vitro corrosion behavior was evaluated by immersion tests in simulated body fluid. The Zn-2Li and Zn-4Li corrosion study demonstrated that corrosion rates and products resemble those observed for pure Zn in vivo, and in addition, the Zn-4Li alloy exhibits higher resistance to corrosion as compared to Zn-2Li. The findings herein encourage further exploration of Zn-Li systems for structural use in biomedical vascular support applications with the ultimate goal of simplifying stent procedures, thereby reducing stent-related complications.

The microstructure and tensile behavior of two Al-7 pct Si-Mg casting alloys, with magnesium contents of 0.4 and 0.7 pct, have been studied. Different microstructures were produced by varying the solidification rate and by modification with strontium. An extraction technique was used to determine the maximum size of the eutectic silicon flakes and particles. The eutectic Si particles in the unmodified alloys and, to a lesser extent, in the Sr-modified alloys are larger in the alloys with higher Mg content. Large Fe-rich π-phase (Al9FeMg3Si5) particles are formed in the 0.7 pct Mg alloys together with some smaller β-phase (Al5FeSi) plates; in contrast, only β-phase plates are observed in the 0.4 pct Mg alloys. The yield stress increases with the Mg content, although, at 0.7 pct Mg, it is less than expected, possibly because some of the Mg is lost to π-phase intermetallics. The tensile ductility is less in the higher Mg alloys, especially in the Sr-modified alloys, compared with the lower Mg alloys. The loss of ductility of the unmodified alloy seems to be caused by the larger Si particles, while the presence of large π-phase intermetallic particles accounts for the loss in ductility of the Sr-modified alloy.  相似文献

The Ti-6Al-4V (Ti-64) alloys modified with two levels of boron (1B and 1.7B (wt pct)) representing hypoeutectic and hypereutectic compositions, produced via a prealloyed powder metallurgy approach, were subjected to various standard heat treatments of Ti-64 to study the microstructural evolution and its influence on tensile properties. Boron-modified Ti-64 (Ti-64B) alloys exhibited differences in microstructural response to heat treatment compared to that of Ti-64 due to variations in constituent phase fractions and the influence of TiB on the beta-to-alpha phase transformation kinetics. The tensile elastic modulus of Ti-64B alloys increased nearly linearly with the boron content (or TiB volume fraction) and the increase could be satisfactorily predicted with an isostrain rule of mixtures (ROMs) and the Halpin–Tsai model. The Ti-64-1B possessed a good combination of tensile strength (1200 to1370 MPa) and ductility (10 to 13 pct), while Ti-64-1.7B exhibited high strength (1300 to 1695 MPa) and modest ductility (2 to 3.5 pct). Coarse primary TiB particles present in Ti-64-1.7B were found to initiate premature failure. Strength modeling revealed that load sharing by the micron-sized TiB whiskers provides the major contribution for the increase in yield strength.  相似文献

Hot-rolled, binary Mg-Nd alloys with compositions ≥0.095 at. pct undergo the texture weakening phenomenon that has been reported in a number of Mg–rare earth (RE) alloys. However, alloys with compositions ≤0.01 at. pct retain a strong basal texture typical of pure Mg and other Mg alloys. Measurements of intragranular misorientation axes obtained using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) show that more dilute alloys contain predominantly basal $ < a > $ < a > dislocations, while richer alloys contain primarily prismatic $ < a > $ < a > dislocations. It is suggested that this change in dislocation content is related to a change in the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) mechanism. Metastable second-phase Mg x Nd1–x intermetallic particles are present within the alloys, and an annealing study indicates that the alloys undergoing texture weakening have grain sizes well predicted by classical Zener drag theory. Even though the more dilute alloys also contain second-phase particles, they are not sufficient to induce pinning. The promotion of nonbasal slip and the reduction in grain boundary mobility due to Zener drag are suggested as controlling mechanisms that promote the observed texture weakening phenomena.  相似文献

AlYNi amorphous alloys with high mechanical strength and good bending ductility have been produced by rapid solidification technique. Vickers hardness (Hv), Young’s modulus (E) and tensile fracture strength (σf) for the amorphous single phase are in the range 365–385 DPN, 71.5–82.2 GPa and 920–1150 MPA, respectively. The crystallized structure of the amorphous alloys consists of coexistent amorphous and fcc-Al phase with a particle size of 5–25 nm. The hardness and tensile fracture strength of these amorphous alloys containing the nanoscale Al particles increase to 550 DPN and 1450 MPA respectively, annealed at 400–550 K for 30 min. This increase in (Hv) and σf is considered because the defect-free nanoscale fcc-Al particles homogeneously dispersed in the amorphous matrix effectively resist against shear deformation of the amorphous matrix. This paper describes in detail the effects of annealing temperature on microstructure and mechanical properties of AlYNi amorphous alloys.  相似文献

The mechanical performance of engineering titanium alloys has long been known to be sensitive to the nature of applied load waveform. Sustained load hold periods imposed during the fatigue loading of two-phase α + β alloys are detrimental to material performance. A number of factors, particularly material texture, phase morphologies, and slip behavior, are thought to affect the dwell fatigue responses of these materials. This study examines the roles of slip character and applied load waveform on an alloy with a simpler microstructure than the two-phase alloys studied previously. It is found that planar slip has significant influence over the dwell, fatigue, and fracture behaviors of equiaxed-grained, single-phase α Ti-7 wt pct Al.  相似文献

Intergranular sustained-load cracking of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu (AA7xxx series) aluminum alloys exposed to moist air or distilled water at temperatures in the range 283 K to 353 K (10 °C to 80 °C) has been reviewed in detail, paying particular attention to local processes occurring in the crack-tip region during crack propagation. Distinct crack-arrest markings formed on intergranular fracture faces generated under fixed-displacement loading conditions are not generated under monotonic rising-load conditions, but can form under cyclic-loading conditions if loading frequencies are sufficiently low. The observed crack-arrest markings are insensitive to applied stress intensity factor, alloy copper content and temper, but are temperature sensitive, increasing from ~150 nm at room temperature to ~400 nm at 313 K (40 °C). A re-evaluation of published data reveals the apparent activation energy, E a for crack propagation in Al-Zn-Mg(-Cu) alloys is consistently ~35 kJ/mol for temperatures above ~313 K (40 °C), independent of copper content or the applied stress intensity factor, unless the alloy contains a significant volume fraction of S-phase, Al2CuMg where E a is ~80 kJ/mol. For temperatures below ~313 K (40 °C) E a is independent of copper content for stress intensity factors below ~14 MNm−3/2, with a value ~80 kJ/mol but is sensitive to copper content for stress intensity factors above ~14 MNm−3/2, with E a , ranging from ~35 kJ/mol for copper-free alloys to ~80 kJ/mol for alloys containing 1.5 pct Cu. The apparent activation energy for intergranular sustained-load crack initiation is consistently ~110 kJ/mol for both notched and un-notched samples. Mechanistic implications are discussed and processes controlling crack growth, as a function of temperature, alloy copper content, and loading conditions are proposed that are consistent with the calculated apparent activation energies and known characteristics of intergranular sustained-load cracking. It is suggested, depending on the circumstances, that intergranular crack propagation in humid air and distilled water can be enhanced by the generation of aluminum hydride, AlH3, ahead of a propagating crack and/or its decomposition after formation within the confines of the nanoscale volumes available after increments of crack growth, defined by the crack arrest markings on intergranular fracture surfaces.  相似文献

Al-Ti-C master alloys have a great potential as efficient grain refiners for aluminum and its alloys. In the present work, the Al-Ti-C master alloys are synthesized via a relatively novel technique through the reaction of a compacted mixture of K2TiF6 and graphite with molten aluminum. The obtained alloys are examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. The results indicate that the produced Al-Ti-C master alloys contain TiC and TiAl3 particles within the aluminum matrix. Also, these alloys were evaluated using the KBI test mold. The results indicate that the produced Al-Ti-C master alloy is an efficient grain refiner for pure aluminum and its alloys compared with the Al-Ti-B one. The factors affecting the grain refinement of aluminum and its alloys are studied. The proper conditions for evaluating the efficiency of the produced Al-Ti-C master alloy to obtain a minimum grain size are as follows: temperature, 993 K (720 °C); holding time, 2 minutes; and (Ti/Al) weight ratio, 0.01 pct.  相似文献
