Traditionally, finite state automata are untimed or asynchronous models of computation in which only the ordering of events, not the time at which events occur, would affect the result of a computation. For real-time systems, it is important to augment these models of computation with a notion of time. For this purpose timed automata have become a powerful canonical model for describing timed behaviors and an effective tool for modeling real-time computations. In this paper, we extend the notion of timed alternating finite automata (TAFA), a class of alternating finite automata (AFA) extended with a finite set of real-valued clocks, and we present an algebraic interpretation of TAFA which parallels that of timed regular expressions and language equations. We further extend the equational representation of AFA to describe timed alternating finite automata, and explore solutions for such equations over time languages.

We present a generalization of the classical supervisory control theory for discrete event systems to a setting of dense real-time systems modeled by Alur and Dill timed automata. The main problem involved is that in general the state space of a timed automaton is (uncountably) infinite. The solution is to reduce the dense time transition system to an appropriate finite discrete subautomaton, the grid automaton, which contains enough information to deal with the timed supervisory control problem (TSCP). The plant and the specifications region graphs are sampled for a granularity defined in a way that each state has an outgoing transition labeled with the same time amount. We redefine the controllability concept in the context of grid automata, and we provide necessary and sufficient solvability conditions under which the optimal solution to centralized supervisory control problems in timed discrete event systems under full observation can be obtained. The enhanced setting admits subsystem composition and the concept of forcible event. A simple example illustrates how the new method can be used to solve the TSCP.

Probabilistic timed automata, a variant of timed automata extended with discrete probability distributions, is a modelling formalism suitable for describing formally both nondeterministic and probabilistic aspects of real-time systems, and is amenable to model checking against probabilistic timed temporal logic properties. However, the previously developed verification algorithms either suffer from high complexity, give only approximate results, or are restricted to a limited class of properties. In the case of classical (non-probabilistic) timed automata it has been shown that for a large class of real-time verification problems correctness can be established using an integral model of time (digital clocks) as opposed to a dense model of time. Based on these results we address the question of under what conditions digital clocks are sufficient for the performance analysis of probabilistic timed automata and show that this reduction is possible for an important class of systems and properties including probabilistic reachability and expected reachability. We demonstrate the utility of this approach by applying the method to the performance analysis of three probabilistic real-time protocols: the dynamic configuration protocol for IPv4 link-local addresses, the IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network protocol and the IEEE 1394 FireWire root contention protocol.

We present a model, task automata, for real time systems with non-uniformly recurring computation tasks. It is an extended version of timed automata with asynchronous processes that are computation tasks generated (or triggered) by timed events. Compared with classical task models for real time systems, task automata may be used to describe tasks (1) that are generated non-deterministically according to timing constraints in timed automata, (2) that may have interval execution times representing the best case and the worst case execution times, and (3) whose completion times may influence the releases of task instances. We generalize the classical notion of schedulability to task automata. A task automaton is schedulable if there exists a scheduling strategy such that all possible sequences of events generated by the automaton are schedulable in the sense that all associated tasks can be computed within their deadlines. Our first technical result is that the schedulability for a given scheduling strategy can be checked algorithmically for the class of task automata when the best case and the worst case execution times of tasks are equal. The proof is based on a decidable class of suspension automata: timed automata with bounded subtraction in which clocks may be updated by subtractions within a bounded zone. We shall also study the borderline between decidable and undecidable cases. Our second technical result shows that the schedulability checking problem will be undecidable if the following three conditions hold: (1) the execution times of tasks are intervals, (2) the precise finishing time of a task instance may influence new task releases, and (3) a task is allowed to preempt another running task.

Timed automata are governed by an idealized semantics that assumes a perfectly precise behavior of the clocks. The traditional semantics is not robust because the slightest perturbation in the timing of actions may lead to completely different behaviors of the automaton. Following several recent works, we consider a relaxation of this semantics, in which guards on transitions are widened by Δ>0 and clocks can drift by ε>0. The relaxed semantics encompasses the imprecisions that are inevitably present in an implementation of a timed automaton, due to the finite precision of digital clocks. We solve the safety verification problem for this robust semantics: given a timed automaton and a set of bad states, our algorithm decides if there exist positive values for the parameters Δ and ε such that the timed automaton never enters the bad states under the relaxed semantics.

In classic scheduling theory, real-time tasks are usually assumed to be periodic, i.e. tasks are released and computed with fixed rates periodically. To relax the stringent constraints on task arrival times, we propose to use timed automata to describe task arrival patterns. In a previous work, it is shown that the general schedulability checking problem for such models is a reachability problem for a decidable class of timed automata extended with subtraction. Unfortunately, the number of clocks needed in the analysis is proportional to the maximal number of schedulable task instances associated with a model, which is in many cases huge. In this paper, we show that for fixed-priority scheduling strategy, the schedulability checking problem can be solved using standard timed automata with two   extra clocks in addition to the clocks used in the original model to describe task arrival times. The analysis can be done in a similar manner to response time analysis in classic Rate-Monotonic Analysis (RMA). The result is further extended to systems with data-dependent control, in which the release time of a task may depend on the time-point at which other tasks finish their execution. For the case when the execution times of tasks are constants, we show that the schedulability problem can be solved using n+1n+1 extra clocks, where nn is the number of tasks. The presented analysis techniques have been implemented in the Times tool. For systems with only periodic tasks, the performance of the tool is comparable with tools implementing the classic RMA technique based on equation-solving, without suffering from the exponential explosion in the number of tasks.

We are interested in modeling behaviors and verifying properties of systems in which time and concurrency play a crucial role. We introduce a model of distributed automata which are equipped with event clocks as in Alur et al. (Theor Comput Sci 211:253–273, 1999), which we call Event Clock Message Passing Automata (ECMPA). To describe the behaviors of such systems we use timed partial orders (modeled as message sequence charts with timing). Our first goal is to extend the classical Büchi-Elgot-Trakhtenbrot equivalence to the timed and distributed setting, by showing an equivalence between ECMPA and a timed extension of monadic second-order (MSO) logic. We obtain such a constructive equivalence in two different ways: (1) by restricting the semantics by bounding the set of timed partial orders; (2) by restricting the timed MSO logic to its existential fragment. We next consider the emptiness problem for ECMPA, which asks if a given ECMPA has some valid timed execution. In general this problem is undecidable and we show that by considering only bounded timed executions, we can obtain decidability. We do this by constructing a timed automaton which accepts all bounded timed executions of the ECMPA and checking emptiness of this timed automaton.

Probabilistic timed automata are timed automata extended with discrete probability distributions, and can be used to model timed randomised protocols or fault-tolerant systems. We present symbolic model-checking algorithms for probabilistic timed automata to verify both qualitative temporal logic properties, corresponding to satisfaction with probability 0 or 1, and quantitative properties, corresponding to satisfaction with arbitrary probability. The algorithms operate on zones, which represent sets of valuations of the probabilistic timed automaton’s clocks. Our method considers only those system behaviours which guarantee the divergence of time with probability 1. The paper presents a symbolic framework for the verification of probabilistic timed automata against the probabilistic, timed temporal logic PTCTL. We also report on a prototype implementation of the algorithms using Difference Bound Matrices, and present the results of its application to the CSMA/CD and FireWire root contention protocol case studies.

Numerous frameworks dedicated to the modeling of discrete event dynamic systems have been proposed to deal with programming, simulation, validation, situation tracking, or decision tasks: automata, Petri nets, Markov chains, synchronous languages, temporal logics, event and situation calculi, STRIPS…All these frameworks present significant similarities, but none offers the flexibility of more generic frameworks such as logic or constraints. In this article, we propose a generic constraint-based framework for the modeling of discrete event dynamic systems, whose basic components are state, event, and time attributes, as well as constraints on these attributes, and which we refer to as CNT for Constraint Network on Timelines. The main strength of such a framework is that it allows any kind of constraint to be defined on state, event, and time attributes. Moreover, its great flexibility allows it to subsume existing apparently different frameworks such as automata, timed automata, Petri nets, and classical frameworks used in planning and scheduling.

We propose a real-time extension to the process algebra CSP. Inspired by timed automata, a very successful formalism for the specification and verification of real-time systems, we handle real time by means of clocks, i.e. real-valued variables that increase at the same rate as time. This differs from the conventional approach based on timed transitions. We give a discrete trace and failures semantics to our language and define the resulting refinement relations. One advantage of our proposal is that it is possible to automatically verify refinement relations between processes. We demonstrate how this can be achieved and under which conditions.Partially supported by EPSRC grant GR/N22960.Received January 2004Revised September 2004Accepted December 2004 by M. Leuschel and D. Axiomatising timed automata
Timed automata has been developed as a basic semantic model for real time systems. Its algorithmic aspects for automated analysis have been well studied. But so far there is still no satisfactory algebraic theory to allow the derivation of semantical equivalence of automata by purely syntactical manipulation. The aim of this paper is to provide such a theory. We present an inference system of timed bisimulation equivalence for timed automata based on a CCS-style regular language for describing timed automata. It consists of the standard monoid laws for bisimulation and a set of inference rules. The judgments of the proof system are conditional equations of the form where is a clock constraint and t,u are terms denoting timed automata. The inference system is shown to be sound and complete for timed bisimulation. The proof of the completeness result relies on the notion of symbolic timed bisimulation, adapted from the work on value–passing processes. Received: 10 May 2001 / 22 October 2001  相似文献

Timed tree automata with an application to temporal logic
Finite automata on -sequences and -trees were introduced in the sixties by Büchi, McNaughton and Rabin. Finite automata on timed -sequences were introduced by Alur and Dill. In this paper we extend the theory of timed -sequences to -trees. The main motivation is the introduction of a new way to specify real-time systems and to study, using automata-theoretic techniques, branching-time temporal logics with timing constraints. We study closure properties and decision problems for the obtained classes of timed -tree languages. In particular, we show the decidability of the emptiness problem. As an application of the introduced theory, we give a new decidable branching time temporal logic (STCTL) whose semantics is based upon timed -trees. We address the problem of performing simultaneously reachability analysis and minimization of real-time transition systems represented by timed automata, i.e., automata extended with a finite set of clock variables. The transitions of the automaton may depend on the values of the clocks and may reset some of the clocks. An efficient algorithm is presented for minimizing a system with respect to a given initial partition that respects the enabling conditions of the transitions of the timed automaton. Our algorithm generates the portion of the minimized system that is reachable from a given initial configuration in time polynomial in the input and the size of the minimal reachable system.

Inclusion dynamics hybrid automata
Hybrid systems are dynamical systems with the ability to describe mixed discrete-continuous evolution of a wide range of systems. Consequently, at first glance, hybrid systems appear powerful but recalcitrant, neither yielding to analysis and reasoning through a purely continuous-time modeling as with systems of differential equations, nor open to inferential processes commonly used for discrete state-transition systems such as finite state automata. A convenient and popular model, called hybrid automata, was introduced to model them and has spurred much interest on its tractability as a tool for inference and model checking in a general setting. Intuitively, a hybrid automaton is simply a “finite-state” automaton with each state augmented by continuous variables, which evolve according to a set of well-defined continuous laws, each specified separately for each state. This article investigates both the notion of hybrid automaton and the model checking problem over such a structure. In particular, it relates first-order theories and analysis results on multivalued maps and reduces the bounded reachability problem for hybrid automata whose continuous laws are expressed by inclusions (xf(x,t)) to a decidability problem for first-order formulæ over the reals. Furthermore, the paper introduces a class of hybrid automata for which the reachability problem can be decided and shows that the problem of deciding whether a hybrid automaton belongs to this class can be again decided using first-order formulæ over the reals. Despite the fact that the bisimulation quotient for this class of hybrid automata can be infinite, we show that our techniques permit effective model checking for a nontrivial fragment of CTL.

In this article, we study the problem of controlling a plant described as a real-time discrete event system. The aimed objective is to ensure a conformance relation denoted tioco between the plant and the formal specification of the system, by means of a supervisor. We adopt a two-step approach. In Step 1, we express the problem into a non-real-time form, by using a transformation of timed automata (TA) into particular finite state automata called Set-Exp-Automata (SEA). The latter use two additional types of events, Set and Exp. And in Step 2, we propose a non-real-time control method suitable for SEA. We also propose a control architecture.
