Abstract. Methods for parameter estimation in the presence of long‐range dependence and heavy tails are scarce. Fractional autoregressive integrated moving average (FARIMA) time series for positive values of the fractional differencing exponent d can be used to model long‐range dependence in the case of heavy‐tailed distributions. In this paper, we focus on the estimation of the Hurst parameter H = d + 1/α for long‐range dependent FARIMA time series with symmetric α‐stable (1 < α < 2) innovations. We establish the consistency and the asymptotic normality of two types of wavelet estimators of the parameter H. We do so by exploiting the fact that the integrated series is asymptotically self‐similar with parameter H. When the parameter α is known, we also obtain consistent and asymptotically normal estimators for the fractional differencing exponent d = H ? 1/α. Our results hold for a larger class of causal linear processes with stable symmetric innovations. As the wavelet‐based estimation method used here is semi‐parametric, it allows for a more robust treatment of long‐range dependent data than parametric methods.  相似文献

Abstract. In recent years, methods to estimate the memory parameter using wavelet analysis have gained popularity in many areas of science. Despite its widespread use, a rigorous semi‐parametric asymptotic theory, comparable with the one developed for Fourier methods, is still lacking. In this article, we adapt to the wavelet setting, the classical semi‐parametric framework introduced by Robinson and his co‐authors for estimating the memory parameter of a (possibly) non‐stationary process. Our results apply to a class of wavelets with bounded supports, which include but are not limited to Daubechies wavelets. We derive an explicit expression of the spectral density of the wavelet coefficients and show that it can be approximated, at large scales, by the spectral density of the continuous‐time wavelet coefficients of fractional Brownian motion. We derive an explicit bound for the difference between the spectral densities. As an application, we obtain minimax upper bounds for the log‐scale regression estimator of the memory parameter for a Gaussian process and we derive an explicit expression of its asymptotic variance.  相似文献

Abstract. For linear processes, semiparametric estimation of the memory parameter, based on the log‐periodogram and local Whittle estimators, has been exhaustively examined and their properties well established. However, except for some specific cases, little is known about the estimation of the memory parameter for nonlinear processes. The purpose of this paper is to provide the general conditions under which the local Whittle estimator of the memory parameter of a stationary process is consistent and to examine its rate of convergence. We show that these conditions are satisfied for linear processes and a wide class of nonlinear models, among others, signal plus noise processes, nonlinear transforms of a Gaussian process ξt and exponential generalized autoregressive, conditionally heteroscedastic (EGARCH) models. Special cases where the estimator satisfies the central limit theorem are discussed. The finite‐sample performance of the estimator is investigated in a small Monte Carlo study.  相似文献

This article derives a semi‐parametric estimator of multi‐variate fractionally integrated processes covering both stationary and non‐stationary values of d. We utilize the notion of the extended discrete Fourier transform and periodogram to extend the multi‐variate local Whittle estimator of Shimotsu (2007) to cover non‐stationary values of d. Consistency and asymptotic normality is shown for d ∈ (?1/2,∞). A simulation study illustrates the performance of the proposed estimator for relevant sample sizes. Empirical justification of the proposed estimator is shown through an empirical analysis of log spot exchange rates. We find that the log spot exchange rates of Germany, United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, France, Italy and Switzerland against the US Dollar for the period January 1974 until December 2001 are well decribed as I(1) processes.  相似文献

Abstract. We consider the asymptotic characteristics of the periodogram ordinates of a fractionally integrated process having memory parameter d≥ 0.5, for which the process is nonstationary, or d≤ -.5, for which the process is noninvertible. Series having d outside the range (-.5,.5) may arise in practice when a raw series is modeled without preliminary consideration of the stationarity and invertibility of the series or when a wrong decision is made concerning the stationarity and invertibility of the series. We find that the periodogram of a nonstationary or noninvertible fractionally integrated process at the jth Fourier frequency ωj= 2πj/n, where n is the sample size, suffers from an asymptotic relative bias which depends on j. We also examine the impact of periodogram bias on the regression estimator of d proposed by Geweke and Porter-Hudak (1983) in finite samples. The results indicate that the bias in the periodogram ordinates can strongly affect the GPH estimator even when the number of Fourier frequencies used in the regression is allowed to depend on the length of the series. We find that data tapering and elimination of the first periodogram ordinate in the regression can reduce this bias, at the cost of an increase in variance for nonstationary series. Additionally, we find for nonstationary series that the GPH estimator is more nearly invariant to first-differencing when a data taper is used.  相似文献

Abstract. We prove uniform convergence results for the integrated periodogram of a weakly dependent time series, namely a strong law of large numbers and a central limit theorem. These results are applied to Whittle's parametric estimation. Under general weak‐dependence assumptions, the strong consistency and asymptotic normality of Whittle's estimate are established for a large class of models. For instance, the causal θ‐weak dependence property allows a new and unified proof of those results for autoregressive conditionally heteroscedastic (ARCH)(∞) and bilinear processes. Non‐causal η‐weak dependence yields the same limit theorems for two‐sided linear (with dependent inputs) or Volterra processes.  相似文献

Abstract. In recent work on time series analysis considerable interest has been focused on series having the property of long memory. Long memory is a characteristic of time series in which the dependence between distant observations is not negligible. The model that has been most frequently studied, which in some situations shows properties of long memory, is based on the autoregressive integrated moving-average ARIMA( p, d, q ) process. Hosking (Fractional differencing, Biometrika 68 (1) (1981), 165–76) generalized this model by permitting the degree of differencing d to take fractional values. He then demonstrated that for d in the range 0 < d < 0.5 the process is stationary and possesses the long memory property. Our study is based on the ARIMA( p, d, q ) model when d takes any real non-integer value in the interval (-0.5, 0.5). The main aim of our study is to examine methods for estimating the parameters of this model. For estimating d we suggest an estimator based on the smoothed periodogram. Using an empirical approach we compare this estimator with other which are well known in the literature of long memory models, e.g. the raw periodogram regression method and the Hurst coefficient method.  相似文献

This article studies the asymptotic properties of the discrete Fourier transforms (DFT) and the periodogram of a stationary long‐memory time series over different epochs. The main theoretical result is a novel bound for the covariance of the DFT ordinates evaluated on two distinct epochs, which depends explicitly on the Fourier frequencies and the gap between the epochs. This result is then applied to obtain the limiting distribution of some nonlinear functions of the periodogram over different epochs, under the additional assumption of gaussianity. We then apply this result to construct an estimator of the memory parameter based on the regression in a neighbourhood of the zero‐frequency of the logarithm of the averaged periodogram, obtained by computing the empirical mean of the periodogram over adjacent epochs. It is shown that replacing the periodogram by its average has an effect similar to the frequency domain pooling to reduce the variance of the estimate. We also propose a simple procedure to test the stationarity of the memory coefficient. A limited Monte Carlo experiment is presented to support our findings.  相似文献

Abstract. The influence of missing observations on the linear prediction of a stationary time series is investigated. Simple bounds for the prediction error variance and asymptotic behaviours for short and long‐memory processes respectively are presented.  相似文献

A bootstrap methodology suitable for use with stationary and non‐stationary fractionally integrated time series is further developed in this article. The resampling algorithm involves estimating the degree of fractional integration, applying the fractional differencing operator, resampling the resulting approximation to the underlying short memory series and, finally, cumulating to obtain a resample of the original fractionally integrated process. This approach extends existing methods in the literature by allowing for general bootstrap schemes including blockwise bootstraps. Furthermore, we show that it can also be validly used for non‐stationary fractionally integrated processes. We establish asymptotic validity results for the general method and provide simulation evidence which highlights a number of favourable aspects of its finite sample performance, relative to other commonly used bootstrap methods.  相似文献

This article aims at showing that a temporal aggregation and a specific bandwidth reduction lead to the same asymptotic properties in estimating long memory by Geweke and Porter‐Hudak's [Journal of Time Series Analysis (1983 ) vol. 4, pp. 221–237] and Robinson's [Annals of Statistics (1995b ) vol. 23, pp. 1630–1661] estimators. In other words, irrespective of the level of temporal aggregation, the asymptotic properties of the estimator are uniquely determined by the number of periodogram ordinates used in the estimation, provided some mild additional assumptions are imposed. Monte Carlo simulations show that this result is a good approximation in finite samples. A real example with the daily US Dollar/French Franc exchange rate series is also provided.  相似文献

In this article, new tests for non‐parametric hypotheses in stationary processes are proposed. Our approach is based on an estimate of the L2‐distance between the spectral density matrix and its best approximation under the null hypothesis. We explain the main idea in the problem of testing for a constant spectral density matrix and in the problem of comparing the spectral densities of several correlated stationary time series. The method is based on direct estimation of integrals of the spectral density matrix and does not require the specification of smoothing parameters. We show that the limit distribution of the proposed test statistic is normal and investigate the finite sample properties of the resulting tests by means of a small simulation study.  相似文献

Abstract. This paper suggests a difference‐based method for inference in the regression model involving fractionally integrated processes. Under suitable regularity conditions, our method can effectively deal with the inference problems associated with the regression model consisting of nonstationary, stationary and intermediate memory regressors, simultaneously. Although the difference‐based method provides a very flexible modelling framework for empirical studies, the implementation of this method is extremely easy, because it completely avoids the difficult problems of choosing a kernel function, a bandwidth parameter, or an autoregressive lag length for the long‐run variance estimation. The asymptotic local power of our method is investigated with a sequence of local data‐generating processes (DGP) in what Davidson and MacKinnon [Canadian Journal of Economics. (1985) Vol. 18, pp. 38–57] call ‘regression direction’. The simulation results indicate that the size control of our method is excellent even when the sample size is only 100, and the pattern of power performance is highly consistent with the theoretical finding from the asymptotic local power analysis conducted in this paper.  相似文献

Abstract. We analyse consistent estimation of the memory parameters of a nonstationary fractionally cointegrated vector time series. Assuming that the cointegrating relationship has substantially less memory than the observed series, we show that a multi-variate Gaussian semi-parametric estimate, based on initial consistent estimates and possibly tapered observations, is asymptotically normal. The estimates of the memory parameters can rely either on original (for stationary errors) or on differenced residuals (for nonstationary errors) assuming only a convergence rate for a preliminary slope estimate. If this rate is fast enough, semi-parametric memory estimates are not affected by the use of residuals and retain the same asymptotic distribution as if the true cointegrating relationship were known. Only local conditions on the spectral densities around zero frequency for linear processes are assumed. We concentrate on a bivariate system but discuss multi-variate generalizations and show the performance of the estimates with simulated and real data.  相似文献

Abstract. We consider bivariate regressions of nonstationary fractionally integrated variables dominated by linear time trends. The asymptotic behaviour of the ordinary least square (OLS) estimators in this case allows limiting normality to arise at a faster rate of convergence than if the individual series were detrended, increasing in this way the power of the tests for fractional cointegration. We also show that the limiting distribution of the t‐ratio of the slope coefficient depends upon the presence or not of a deterministic trend in the conditional regressor. We introduce the concept of local fractional trend to explain the apparently diverging asymptotic theories that apply when a trend is either present or absent in our set‐up.  相似文献

We provide a self‐normalization for the sample autocovariances and autocorrelations of a linear, long‐memory time series with innovations that have either finite fourth moment or are heavy‐tailed with tail index 2 < α < 4. In the asymptotic distribution of the sample autocovariance there are three rates of convergence that depend on the interplay between the memory parameter d and α, and which consequently lead to three different limit distributions; for the sample autocorrelation the limit distribution only depends on d. We introduce a self‐normalized sample autocovariance statistic, which is computable without knowledge of α or d (or their relationship), and which converges to a non‐degenerate distribution. We also treat self‐normalization of the autocorrelations. The sampling distributions can then be approximated non‐parametrically by subsampling, as the corresponding asymptotic distribution is still parameter‐dependent. The subsampling‐based confidence intervals for the process autocovariances and autocorrelations are shown to have satisfactory empirical coverage rates in a simulation study. The impact of subsampling block size on the coverage is assessed. The methodology is further applied to the log‐squared returns of Merck stock.  相似文献

Abstract. This paper considers semi‐parametric frequency domain inference for seasonal or cyclical time series with asymmetric long memory properties. It is shown that tapering the data reduces the bias caused by the asymmetry of the spectral density at the cyclical frequency. We provide a joint treatment of different tapering schemes and of the log‐periodogram regression and Gaussian semi‐parametric estimates of the memory parameters. Tapering allows for a less restrictive trimming of frequencies for the analysis of the asymptotic properties of both estimates when allowing for asymmetries. Simple rules for inference are feasible thanks to tapering and their validity in finite samples is investigated in a simulation exercise and for an empirical example.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a test for a break in the level of a fractionally integrated process when the timing of the putative break is not known. This testing problem has received considerable attention in the literature in the case where the time series is weakly autocorrelated. Less attention has been given to the case where the underlying time series is allowed to be fractionally integrated. Here, valid testing can only be performed if the limiting null distribution of the level break test statistic is well defined for all values of the fractional integration exponent considered. However, conventional sup‐Wald type tests diverge when the data are strongly autocorrelated. We show that a sup‐Wald statistic, which is standardized using a non‐parametric kernel‐based long‐run variance estimator, does possess a well‐defined limit distribution, depending only on the fractional integration parameter, provided the recently developed fixed‐b asymptotic framework is applied. We give the appropriate asymptotic critical values for this sup‐Wald statistic and show that it has good finite sample size and power properties.  相似文献

In this article we introduce a robust to outliers Wilcoxon change‐point testing procedure, for distinguishing between short‐range dependent time series with a change in mean at unknown time and stationary long‐range dependent time series. We establish the asymptotic distribution of the test statistic under the null hypothesis for L1 near epoch dependent processes and show its consistency under the alternative. The Wilcoxon‐type testing procedure similarly as the CUSUM‐type testing procedure (of Berkes I., Horváth L., Kokoszka P. and Shao Q. 2006. Ann.Statist. 34:1140–1165), requires estimation of the location of a possible change‐point, and then using pre‐ and post‐break subsamples to discriminate between short and long‐range dependence. A simulation study examines the empirical size and power of the Wilcoxon‐type testing procedure in standard cases and with disturbances by outliers. It shows that in standard cases the Wilcoxon‐type testing procedure behaves equally well as the CUSUM‐type testing procedure but outperforms it in presence of outliers. We also apply both testing procedure to hydrologic data.  相似文献

We demonstrate that the fast and exact Davies–Harte algorithm is valid for simulating a certain class of stationary Gaussian processes – those with a negative autocovariance sequence for all non-zero lags. The result applies to well known classes of long memory processes: Gaussian fractionally differenced (FD) processes, fractional Gaussian noise (fGn) and the nonstationary fractional Brownian Motion (fBm).  相似文献
