An integral part of the daily lives of adolescents revolves around the Internet. Adolescents are vulnerable online because of a combination of their natural innocence, sensation-seeking drive coupled with the current digital media landscape and its manifold affordances for interactivity, immersive virtual environments and social networking. Adolescence is a time of transition in which youths progressively venture from the safety of the home to explore new opportunities. In this phase of life, both parents and peers play a critical role in either instigating or mitigating risky and dangerous activities. This study examines in the context of youth’s online risky activities, whether the compensatory-competition model or the continuity-cognitive model prevails. This study also explores whether the engagement of parental mediation activities mitigates or compounds the situation. A Partial Least Squares Equation analysis of a stratified random survey of 2000 Malaysian school children between 13 and 15-year-old controlling for age and gender, found that peer-attachment competes with parent attachment for the influence of teenagers’ risky online activities and Internet addiction. Parental influence is stronger when parents actively engage in mediating the online activities of their teenagers. On balance, parents can have more influence on teenagers than their peers. 相似文献

As Internet use becomes widespread at home, parents are trying to maximize their children's online opportunities while also minimizing online risks. We surveyed parents of 6- to 14-year-olds in 8 European countries (N = 6,400). A factor analysis revealed 2 parental mediation strategies. Enabling mediation is associated with increased online opportunities but also risks. This strategy incorporates safety efforts, responds to child agency, and is employed when the parent or child is relatively digitally skilled, so may not support harm. Restrictive mediation is associated with fewer online risks but at the cost of opportunities, reflecting policy advice that regards media use as primarily problematic. It is favored when parent or child digital skills are lower, potentially keeping vulnerable children safe yet undermining their digital inclusion. 相似文献

Studies of parental mediation of children's television viewing have included samples of mostly middle- and upper-class Caucasian parents. These studies have only begun to examine mediation in the context of parent-child relationships. This study of 306 low-income, predominately African American mothers assesses macro- and microlevel influences on viewing mediation using Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory of child development. It was hypothesized that factors outside the home (e.g., work hours) influence parents' involvement with children, which, in turn, was predicted to influence viewing mediation. Results supported this model for coviewing and instructive mediation, but not for viewing restrictions. 相似文献

The emergence of widespread broadband home Internet connectivity is leading to a change in patterns of home user online behavior. Innovative networked applications (e.g., online multimedia and gaming) are making their mark. Will the next killer Internet applications be new forms of online digital home entertainment? Can the Internet support a widespread explosion in the use of such applications? In this article we explore potential problems in running interactive multimedia and game applications over existing Internet and home access network infrastructures. We also discuss the issues both network and application developers should consider when designing new Internet entertainment applications such that widespread usage becomes a possibility. 相似文献

ICTs such as television, the Internet and mobile phones are assuming a growing presence within the modern homestead and are having an indelible impact on family dynamics and parenting. While gender studies have sought to understand ICT domestication from the perspective of mothers, the influence of social and cultural factors on the adoption and appropriation of ICTs has not been as widely studied. So as to better explicate the influence of socio-cultural factors on mothers’ domestication of ICTs, this article studies the experiences of mothers in China and South Korea and compares its findings against studies of ICT domestication by mothers in other countries. Based on ethnographic interviews with mothers in media-rich families in Beijing, Shanghai and Seoul, the article explores how mothers incorporate ICTs into their household routines and how they utilise ICTs as they fulfil their maternal duties of managing the home, coordinating schedules, fostering family interaction and supervising their children. It also pays particular attention to how they oversee their children’s ICT use. The article finds that cultural conceptions of motherhood and maternal responsibility, the premium placed on academic achievement by children, as well as the two societies’ highly positive outlook on technology, greatly influence how Chinese and Korean mothers use and supervise their children’s use of ICTs. It also finds that the mothers are creative in deploying ICTs in coordinating schedules with, disciplining and monitoring their children, but also find the perpetual mothering which is enabled by always-on ICT-mediated connections to be burdensome and stressful. 相似文献

Children are increasingly using their own smartphones for communicative and non-communicative purposes. In fact, studies showed that different ways of using the smartphone might influence loneliness, and as a consequence, loneliness might also enhance further engagement with the smartphone. In this context, parents play an important role because they can regulate children’s smartphone use. The present study tested the moderating role of active and restrictive parental mediation on the relations between different types of smartphone use and children’s loneliness. We conducted a two-wave panel survey among 10- to 14-year-old children and their parents, resulting in total of 384 parent–child pairs at Time 2. Our results revealed that non-communicative use at Time 1 increased loneliness at Time 2. We also found a reciprocal influence, that is, loneliness at Time 1 increased children’s non-communicative use at Time 2. We found no moderating influence of active and restrictive parental mediation on the relations between children’s smartphone use and loneliness. Our findings are discussed against the background of the poor-get-poorer effect regarding smartphone use. 相似文献

Some have pointed to divides in the availability of fixed home broadband Internet access as a contributor to rural students’ lower levels of educational attainment. Based on standardized exams (SAT Suite) and a survey of rural Michigan students in grades 8–11, we find that rural students with broadband home Internet access are more interested in school and leave homework incomplete less often. However, the relationship to classroom grades (GPA) is relatively trivial. Yet, we find that students who are not dependent on a cell phone for Internet access and those with higher digital skills, especially social media skills, rank considerably higher on the SAT. Rural students with broadband Internet access are able to participate in a more diverse array of online media activities, which supports building digital skills. Any negative relationship between time spent on social media, video games, other digital media and educational outcomes is outweighed by the benefit to digital skills. However, aspects of rural culture; including the emphasis on activities such as sports, as a path to postsecondary schooling and upward, social mobility; may be stunting the positive relationship between access, digital skills, and educational aspirations. Whereas extra-curricular sports have no direct relationship to SAT performance, students who spend more time on sports receive higher grades and have higher educational aspirations than those with more digital skills. We discuss the implications for rural students’ access to human capital and how the unequal relationship between digital skills and performance in the classroom and on the SAT may perpetuate inequalities. 相似文献

This study examines whether screen media parenting practices (i.e. using screen media as tools for punishment or reward and setting limits on screen time), and alternate non-electronic activities are associated with children’s screen time. Participants were parents of 4770 children who were six to eleven years old. Using a survey questionnaire, they reported their children’s average daily amount of screen and non-electronic activities times, and their screen-related parenting practices. Odds ratios were computed using logistic regression. Children whose parents reward good achievement/behavior by allowing screen time, punish bad achievement/behavior by prohibiting screen time, and allow screen time to keep them quiet are more likely to exceed the daily screen time recommendation of a maximum two hours. Screen-related home rules, physical activities and other alternate activities associated negatively with exceeding recommended screen time limit. Our study suggests that there is a need to develop effective strategies and intervention programs to educate parents to avoid screen-related parenting practices that increase their children’s likelihood of exceeding the recommended media time. 相似文献

The title of this article ‘The rise of the electronic individual’ tries to grasp several of those changes which young people in today’s Western society are confronting in a new digital media environment. With its various functions/services and characteristics such as multimedia, hypertext, interactivity etc., Internet (its users) has created a virtual reality, often called Cyberspace. Besides describing where Internet has been seen or used, what it is utilised for, how often the medium is used, and the attitudes to Internet among young Swedish teenagers, the article puts its focus on the alternative public sphere that is provided by Internet. It is a matter of getting access to a virtual arena, often without interference from parents, teachers and other elderly, where different roles and identities are tried out. The school yard is no longer perceived as the obvious meeting point as young people are entering the social landscape of Internet. For example, chatting and sending e-mail have become a natural way of becoming acquainted with other peers from all over the world. 相似文献

This study examined whether external factors, which are charity project, charity organization, Internet technology features and social network site (SNS) features influence people’s general attitude towards online donation and their intention to donate via SNS. An online survey was conducted based on the framework of factors influencing the intention to donate via SNS that was adapted from the literature review. Data from 258 respondents were used for analysis. Structural equation modelling was used to test the research model and hypotheses. The results indicated that the Internet technology features factor significantly contributes in influencing people’s general attitude towards online donation, and general attitude positively influences people’s intention to donate via SNSs. The full mediation effect of the general attitude towards online donation on the relationship between Internet technology features and intention to donate via SNS was found. However, charity project, charity organization, and SNS features were not significant factors in influencing people’s intention to donate via SNSs. The sample was limited to some Asian countries (preliminary Malaysia and South Korea). Thus, the results cannot be generalized to other countries. The findings suggest that non-profit organizations should focus on how to deal with the Internet issues, especially pertaining to security and privacy. Therefore, a mechanism for gaining donors’ trust to use the Internet, particularly in doing online transaction must be considered. 相似文献

Given that the vast majority of Internet interactions relate to content access and delivery, recent research has pointed to a potential paradigm shift from the current host-centric Internet model to an information-centric one. In information-centric networks, named content is accessed directly, with the best content copy delivered to the requesting user given content caching within the network. Here, we present an Internet-scale mediation approach for content access and delivery that supports content and network mediation. Content characteristics, server load, and network distance are taken into account in order to locate the best content copy and optimize network utilization while maximizing the user quality of experience. The content mediation infrastructure is provided by Internet service providers in a cooperative fashion, with both decoupled/two-phase and coupled/one-phase modes of operation. We present in detail the coupled mode of operation which is used for popular content and follows a domain-level hop-by-hop content resolution approach to optimally identify the best content copy. We also discuss key aspects of our content mediation approach, including incremental deployment issues and scalability. While presenting our approach, we also take the opportunity to explain key information-centric networking concepts. 相似文献

The emergence of computers has only accelerated various transitions and added new directions to where the world is heading. Nowadays, such practices as e-commerce, e-government, and e-learning are commonplace. For many of us, it's almost impossible to imagine our lives without email. As the world evolves, we must embrace change and clearly understand the associated dangers. For instance, children have personal computers and Internet access at home and in school, and they often know more about computers than their parents. Illegal drug use, skipping class, bullying, and pornography aren't new problems, but the Internet can make getting away with such behaviour easier. The Internet also creates conditions for sophisticated methods of cheating, intellectual property theft, and criminal hacking. Cyberspying argues that many people have no idea of the Internet's evils and the problems that answering an innocent-looking email could cause. 相似文献
