A prospective field study involving 251 Holstein cows and heifers from five dairy farms near Guelph, Ontario, Canada, was conducted to measure the effect of monensin delivered in a controlled release capsule 3 wk precalving on metabolic function in dairy cows immediately pre- and postcalving. At 3 wk before expected calving, cows were randomly assigned to receive either a controlled release capsule containing monensin or to serve as negative controls. Cows were blood sampled once per week precalving and once in the week following calving, at the same time of day and the same day of the week. Serum was evaluated for beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), cholesterol, urea, glucose, calcium, and phosphorus. Monensin-treated cows had significantly decreased NEFA and BHBA and significantly increased concentrations of serum cholesterol and urea in the week immediately precalving. No effect of treatment was observed for calcium, phosphorus, or glucose in the precalving period. After calving, concentrations of phosphorus were lower and BHBA tended to be lower, and cholesterol and urea were higher in monensin-treated cows. There was no effect of treatment on NEFA, glucose, or calcium in the first week postcalving. Monensin treatment administered precalving significantly improved indicators of energy balance in both the immediate precalving and postcalving periods. The findings indicate better energy metabolism in monensin-treated cows as they approach calving. Improvement of energy balance before calving is important for the prevention of energy associated metabolic diseases, such as retained placenta, clinical ketosis, and displaced abomasum, which might occur immediately postcalving.  相似文献

A meta-analysis of the impact of monensin on health and reproductive outcomes in dairy cattle was conducted. A total of 16 papers were identified with sufficient data and quality to evaluate health and reproductive outcomes for monensin. The available trials provided approximately 9,500 cows with sufficient data for analysis. This provided good statistical power to examine the effects of monensin on health and reproduction. Over all the trials analyzed, monensin decreased the risk of ketosis [relative risk (RR) = 0.75], displaced abomasums (RR = 0.75), and mastitis (RR = 0.91). No significant effects of monensin were found for milk fever, lameness, dystocia, retained placenta, or metritis. Monensin had no effect on first-service conception risk (RR = 0.97) or days to pregnancy (hazard ratio = 0.93). However, the impact of monensin on dystocia, retained placenta, and metritis was heterogeneous for all 3 outcome measures and random effect models were utilized. Causes of the heterogeneity were explored with meta-regression. Days of treatment with monensin before calving increased the risk of dystocia. Delivery method of monensin influenced the incidence of retained placenta and metritis, with risk being lower with controlled release capsule treatment compared with delivery in either topdress or in a total mixed ration. Days of treatment before calving also influenced retained placenta with an increase in risk with more days treated before calving. Improvements in ketosis, displaced abomasums, and mastitis with monensin were achieved. Exposure to prolonged treatment in the dry period with monensin may increase the risk of dystocia and retained placenta.  相似文献

Dry cows and pregnant heifers from 25 farms near Guelph, Ontario, Canada were enrolled in a large, double-blind, randomized clinical trial designed to evaluate the impact of monensin on energy metabolism, health, and production. A total of 503 cows was given monensin in controlled-release capsules, and 507 cows were administered placebo capsules 3 wk before expected calving date. The effects of treatment on health were evaluated using a logistic regression model. Treatment with monensin significantly reduced the incidence of abomasal displacement (OR = 0.41-0.84) and multiple illnesses (OR = 0.38-0.89). Monensin treatment tended to reduce the incidence of clinical ketosis (P = 0.11) and the risk of being culled (P = 0.09) in the first 94 d of lactation. Reproductive performance was analyzed with both a logistic regression model for conception rate and a survival analysis for days to first breeding and days from calving to conception. Treatment with monensin had no significant effect on any measure of reproductive performance.  相似文献

An experiment was designed to examine subclinical ketosis in periparturient dairy cows and the antiketogenic effects of monensin. Subclinical ketosis was induced through a 10% feed restriction and was quantitatively determined using a blood beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) threshold of 1200 mumol/L. Monensin decreased the BHBA concentration by 35% and increased the glucose concentration by 15%. No effect of monensin on milk production was detected, but rumen fermentation was altered. Monensin decreased the acetate to propionate ratio, decreased the butyrate concentration, and increased pH. The lower concentration of BHBA in blood and higher concentration of blood glucose in cows treated with a monensin controlled-release capsule decreased subclinical ketosis in early lactation cows.  相似文献

Path analysis and multiple logistic-normal regression were used to model the interrelationships between stated herd management practices and herd 30-d postpartum incidence rates of dystocia, retained placenta, and clinical postpartum metritis, cystic ovary, milk fever, ketosis, left displaced abomasum, and mastitis. Management risk factors were obtained from a personal interview questionnaire. Data were from 2141 multiparous Holstein calvings from May 1981 through April 1982 in 32 commercial herds in the vicinity of Cornell University. Farms where the stated policy was to administer low calcium diets to the dry cows experienced more dystocia and retained placenta. More dystocia was experienced on farms where the stated policy was to administer extra vitamin D to dry cows, where dry cows were housed with the milking cows, or where calving occurred in maternity pens rather than stanchions. There was an increased likelihood of milk fever and left displaced abomasum on farms on which the stated policy was to lead feed. Farms where dairy farmers treated cases of retained placenta had more retained placenta than farms on which the treatment was done by the veterinarian. Farms reporting the practice of feeding the cows to increase their weight during the dry period had increased odds of ketosis.  相似文献

The effects of monensin, administered either as a controlled release capsule (CRC) or a premix, on attenuating grain-induced subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) and on ruminal fermentation characteristics in Holstein cows receiving a total mixed ration were investigated in two experiments. In both experiments, six multiparous, rumen-fistulated Holstein cows were used in a two-treatment, two-period crossover design with 6-wk periods. In Experiment 1, treatments were either a monensin CRC or a placebo CRC. In Experiment 2, treatments were either a monensin premix or a placebo premix. In both experiments, at the beginning of wk 4 SARA was induced in experimental cows for a 10-d period with a grain challenge model, and ruminal pH was measured continuously using indwelling pH probes. The administration of monensin either as a CRC or a premix had no effect on ruminal pH characteristics. Neither monensin CRC nor premix had an effect on ruminal volatile fatty acid concentrations, but reduced the acetate:propionate ratio. Monensin premix-treated cows were observed to have increased milk yield, largely as a result of a higher dry matter intake in monensin-treated cows compared to control cows. Milk fat content and yield were lower in monensin-treated cows compared to placebo-treated cows during SARA. In conclusion, there is no evidence that monensin was efficacious in raising ruminal pH during SARA under the conditions employed in this study.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate parenteral vitamin E for the prevention of peripartum disease in dairy cows. A randomized clinical trial was conducted in 21 commercial dairy herds. Cows (n = 1142) were randomly assigned to receive either a single subcutaneous injection of 3000 IU of vitamin E, or placebo, 1 wk before expected calving. Serum alpha-tocopherol was significantly increased in treated cows at 7 and 14 d, but not at 21 d after injection. Overall, there were no significant differences between treatment groups in the incidence of retained placenta, clinical mastitis, metritis, endometritis, ketosis, displaced abomasum, or lameness. However, there was a conditional benefit of treatment for reduction of the incidence of retained placenta. Cows with marginal pretreatment vitamin E status (serum alpha-tocopherol to cholesterol mass ratio < 2.5 x 10(-3)) that received an injection of vitamin E tended to have reduced risk of retained placenta. However, in cows with adequate serum vitamin E, there was no reduction in the incidence of any disease. For clinical application, primiparous animals were most likely to benefit from prepartum injection of vitamin E.  相似文献

The influence of a monensin controlled-release capsule, which was administered 3 wk before the calving date, on diet digestibility and nitrogen utilization was investigated in 16 multiparous dairy cows between approximately 10 and 3 d precalving and 3 and 9 d postcalving. Monensin decreased rumen ammonia from 5.4 to 3.2 mg dl(-1) precalving and from 6.0 to 4.9 mg dl(-1) postcalving. Blood urea concentrations were increased by monensin from 4.93 to 5.28 mM precalving and from 5.27 to 5.81 mM postcalving, but these increases were not statistically significant. Precalving, monensin increased the apparent digestibilities of neutral detergent fiber from 52.8 to 62.1%, of acid detergent fiber from 50.7 to 58.7%, and of gross energy from 60.5 to 66.7%. Postcalving, monensin increased the apparent nitrogen digestibility from 63.7 to 71.5%, which resulted in an improvement in the nitrogen balance from -77.8 to -44.9 g d(-1). The monensin controlled-release capsule contributed to increasing the availability of dietary nitrogen to the transition dairy cow during the critical postcalving period.  相似文献

A total of 850 Holstein cows from 13 commercial dairy herds were involved in the present study to compare the effects of 2 different dry period (DP) management strategies on health and reproductive parameters. Cows were assigned to either a short (SDP; 35-d) or a conventional (CDP; 60-d) DP management within each herd, based on previous 305-d milk yield, parity (414 primiparous and 436 multiparous), and estimated calving interval. Cows assigned to CDP were fed a dry cow ration from dry-off until 21 d prepartum, and were then switched to a precalving ration. Cows assigned to SDP were fed the precalving ration throughout their DP. Rations were specific to each herd. A significant treatment × parity interaction was found for culling rate. Dry period management did not affect culling rate for second-lactation cows but a significantly higher culling rate occurred in multiparous CDP cows compared with SDP (42.6 vs. 31.6% ± 3.7 for CDP and SDP, respectively). Management used in the DP did not affect incidence of severe ketosis, displaced abomasum, milk fever, and mastitis, although incidence of these metabolic disorders were lower in second-lactation than third- or greater-lactation cows. The incidence of mild ketosis (evaluated by milk ketone concentration) was lower following SDP, probably as a result of better energy balance. On the other hand, the incidence of retained placenta was higher in multiparous cows assigned to SDP, but the reason for this increase remains unclear. Nevertheless, this did not lead to increased incidence of metritis. Moreover, DP management did not influence reproductive measures, including days in milk at first breeding, number of breedings per conception, as well as conception rates at first and second services. Regarding days open, overall, all 13 herds were not significantly affected by treatment, but 1 herd clearly showed opposite results to the 12 others. Our results indicate that a short DP management strategy could facilitate transition from one lactation to the next by decreasing the incidence of mild ketosis, with no major negative effects on other health parameters and reproduction. The variation in results observed among herds suggests that other management practices influence the response observed following a short or conventional DP, emphasizing the need for other field studies.  相似文献

Path analysis and logistic regression were used to model direct and indirect relationships among clinical periparturient (within 30 d after calving) retained placenta, metritis, veterinary-assisted dystocia, uncomplicated and complicated ketosis, left displaced abomasum, parturient paresis, mastitis, and estimated nutrient intakes (protein, calcium, phosphorus, energy; coded into terciles) in the last 3 wk of the dry period. Data were from 1,374 multiparous Holstein lactations for calvings from March 1981 through February 1982 in 31 commercial herds in central New York. Periparturient disorders occurred as a complex. Odds ratios for the multiplicative effects of parturient paresis on incidence of veterinary-assisted dystocia, retained placenta, complicated ketosis, and clinical mastitis were 7.2, 4.0, 23.6, and 5.4, respectively. Reproductive disorders were interrelated. Retained placenta, left displaced abomasum, and parturient paresis directly increased risk of complicated ketosis (odds ratios were 16.4, 53.5, and 23.6, respectively). Higher terciles of estimated energy intake in the last 3 wk of the dry period decreased risk of veterinary-assisted dystocia and left displaced abomasum, while higher terciles of estimated protein intake decreased risk of retained placenta and uncomplicated ketosis. Estimated nutrient intakes were directly related to subsequent metabolic disorders and directly and indirectly related (mediated by metabolic disorders) to reproductive disorders. The study suggests that feeding higher intakes (relative to National Research Council recommendations) of protein and energy in the last 3 week of the dry period may reduce the incidence of metabolic and reproductive disorders. Exact recommendations as to the amounts and types of feed cannot be made from our results.  相似文献

Dairy cows suffer blood Ca losses as lactation begins and might be affected by hypocalcemia in its clinical (total serum Ca concentration <1.50 mM) or subclinical form (total serum Ca concentration ≤2.14 mM). Several studies have suggested that hypocalcemia is associated with different health problems of the cow but results from different studies are not consistent. The objective of this study was to assess potential associations between subclinical hypocalcemia (SCHC) and displaced abomasum, intramammary infections, metritis, retained placenta, and ketosis. Also, the associations between SCHC and milk yield and reproductive function were evaluated. After discarding cows (32) with clinical hypocalcemia, a total of 764 cows from 6 different commercial farms were enrolled in this study. Blood samples were collected at 24 to 48 h postcalving and analyzed for total Ca concentration. Odds ratios of the different afflictions potentially associated with SCHC were calculated. Seventy-eight percent of the analyzed cows incurred SCHC. The occurrence of displaced abomasum, ketosis, retained placenta, and metritis was 3.7, 5.5, 3.4, and 4.3 times more likely, respectively, in cows that had SCHC than in cows with normocalcemia. Furthermore, the risk of incurring retained placenta or metritis increased in multiparous cows as serum Ca concentrations decreased compared with that in primiparous cows. Normocalcemic cows, independent of parity, were more likely to show their first estrus sooner after calving than SCHC cows, but no correlation was found between SCHC and other reproductive parameters. Different serum Ca concentration cutoffs were identified for several postpartum afflictions (≤1.93, ≤2.05, ≤2.05, and ≤2.10 mM for ketosis, retained placenta, metritis, and displaced abomasum, respectively). In conclusion, SCHC, defined as serum Ca ≤2.14 mM, is a frequent illness affecting the majority of the dairy cows with important repercussions on health. However, if SCHC were to be used to predict postpartum disease, different serum Ca cutoff points are likely to be needed because best predictive cutoff values varied among postpartum ketosis, displaced abomasum, retained placenta, and metritis.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare periparturient serum Ca dynamics (CaDyn) in cows with and without diseases in early lactation. The study enrolled 1,949 cows from a commercial dairy farm in northern Germany. Blood samples were drawn 7 d before expected calving date and on d 0, 1, 3, and 7 after calving and analyzed for serum Ca concentration. Cows were monitored for clinical hypocalcemia (CH), ketosis, left displaced abomasum (LDA), retained placenta, acute puerperal metritis (APM), mastitis, and pneumonia. To evaluate the association between CaDyn and diseases during the transition period, repeated measures ANOVA with first-order autoregressive covariance were performed. Serum CaDyn of healthy cows (i.e., without any of the aforementioned diseases) was compared with CaDyn of cows with one of the aforementioned diseases (CH, ketosis, APM, mastitis, LDA, and pneumonia), and cows with multiple diseases (CH+, ketosis+, APM+, mastitis+, LDA+, and pneumonia+). Separate models were built for primiparous and multiparous cows. For primiparous cows, we evaluated the association between CaDyn and ketosis (healthy cows vs. cows with ketosis vs. cows with ketosis+) and CaDyn and APM (healthy cows vs. cows with APM vs. cows with APM+). The same models were built for multiparous cows. Three additional models were built for multiparous cows to evaluate the association between CaDyn and CH (healthy cows vs. cows with CH vs. cows with CH+), mastitis (healthy cows vs. cows with mastitis vs. cows with mastitis+), or LDA (healthy cows vs. cows with LDA vs. cows with LDA+). In primiparous cows, serum Ca concentrations of cows with ketosis, APM, and APM+ were significantly reduced on d 3 and 7 after calving, compared with healthy cows. Serum Ca concentrations of primiparous cows with ketosis+ were reduced on d 3, but not on d 7 after calving. Multiparous cows with CH had significantly reduced serum Ca concentrations on d 0, 1, and 3 compared with healthy cows. On d 3 and 7, serum Ca concentration of CH+ cows was significantly reduced compared with healthy multiparous cows. Multiparous cows with ketosis and ketosis+ had significantly reduced serum Ca concentrations on d 1 and 3 compared with healthy cows. Cows with APM+ had significantly increased serum Ca concentrations on d 0 and reduced serum Ca concentrations on d 3, compared with healthy cows. Whereas multiparous cows with mastitis had a reduced serum Ca concentration on d 1, mastitis+ cows had a reduced serum Ca concentration on d 1 and 3, compared with healthy multiparous cows. Overall, multiparous cows with LDA+ had reduced serum Ca concentrations. Especially a delayed onset of hypocalcemia (d 3 and 7) was indicative for the development of disease in primiparous cows. In multiparous cows, reduced serum Ca concentrations on d 1 and 3 were associated with occurrence of diseases. Future studies should evaluate whether reduced serum Ca concentrations are a cause or concomitant circumstance of diseases in early lactation.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, major management systems, and fresh cow clinical conditions associated with ketosis in western European dairy herds. A total of 131 dairies were enrolled in Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom during 2011 to 2012. A milk-based test for ketones (Keto-Test; Sanwa Kagaku Kenkyusho Co. Ltd., Nagoya, Japan; distributed by Elanco Animal Health, Antwerp, Belgium) was used for screening cows between d 7 and 21 after calving and ketosis was defined as a Keto-Test ≥100 µmol/L. Study cows were observed for clinical disease up to 35 d postcalving. Multivariate analysis (generalized estimating equation logistic regression) was performed to determine country, farm, management, feed, and cow factors associated with ketosis and to determine associations between ketosis and fresh cow diseases. Thirty-nine percent of the cows were classified as having ketosis. The herd average of ketosis was 43% in Germany, 53% in France, 31% in Italy, 46% in the Netherlands, and 31% in the United Kingdom. Of the 131 farms, 112 (85%) had 25% or more of their fresh cows resulting as positive for ketosis. Clinical ketosis was not reported in most farms and the highest level of clinical ketosis reported was 23%. The risks of ketosis were significantly lower in Italy and the United Kingdom compared with France, the Netherlands, and Germany. Larger herd size was associated with a decreased risk of ketosis. The farms that fed partially mixed rations had 1.5 times higher odds of ketosis than those that fed total mixed rations. Cows that calved in April to June had the highest odds of ketosis, with about twice as high odds compared with cows that calved in July to September. The cows that calved in January to March tended to have 1.5 times higher risk of ketosis compared with cows that calved in July to September. The odds of ketosis in parity 2 and parity 3 to 7 was significantly higher (1.5 and 2.8 times higher, respectively) than the odds of ketosis in parity 1. The odds of ketosis was significantly smaller in parity 2 compared with parity 3 to 7. Ketosis was associated with significantly higher odds of all common fresh cow conditions: metritis, mastitis, displaced abomasum, clinical ketosis, lameness, and gastrointestinal disorders. Odds of ketosis in cows having had twins or dystocia were not increased, whereas higher odds of ketosis were observed in cows with milk fever or retained placenta.  相似文献

Dairy cows often experience decreased immune function around the time of calving, typified by impaired polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) function and a transient neutropenia. This is associated with increased disease incidence, including mastitis, retained placenta, and metritis. In an attempt to improve PMN functional capacity during the periparturient period, we injected cows with recombinant bovine granulocyte colony-stimulating factor covalently bound to polyethylene glycol (PEG rbG-CSF) twice subcutaneously, about 6 d before calving and within 24 h after calving. Twenty-one cows in their second pregnancy were enrolled in this study and divided into 2 groups: PEG rbG-CSF treated (n = 11) and saline-treated controls (n = 10). The PMN numbers quickly and dramatically increased after PEG rbG-CSF administration and remained elevated through the end of the experiment (13 d after calving). Exocytosis of myeloperoxidase by stimulated PMN, which is generally decreased in periparturient cows, was markedly increased by PEG rbG-CSF after injection. Higher myeloperoxidase exocytosis persisted for at least 10 d after calving. The PMN superoxide anion release and phagocytosis activity did not differ between groups. Injection of PEG rbG-CSF was safe for cows, with no significant negative effects observed. The greatest single effect of PEG rbG-CSF administration was a dramatic increase in circulating numbers of PMN. The increased numbers of PMN ready to move to a site of infection early in the course of an infection may improve the ability of the cow to ward off clinical disease in the periparturient period.  相似文献

Incidence, predisposing factors, and implications of various reproductive disorders (dystocia, twinning, stillbirth, retained placenta, cystic ovaries, anovulation, infections of the reproductive tract, metritis, and abnormal health status) are reviewed as to their inter-relationships and collective impact on reproductive performance, milk yield and predisposition to other diseases or disorders in the periparturient dairy cow. All reproductive disorders reviewed reviewed reduce reproductive performance either directly or indirectly. Concurrent milk yield was reduced marginally in a few studies as a consequence of twinning, retained placenta, cystic ovaries, metritis, or other uterine disorders, and in cows with an abnormal health status. There is strong evidence for associated losses in milk yield following surgical delivery of a stillborn calf. We conclude that most periparturient disorders occur as a complex, rather than as a single abnormality. Cows with one disorders are at increased risk for other disorders, including metabolic ones. In contrast, actual milk yield or potential for high production generally does not predispose cows to increased risk for any of the reproductive disorders. The literature suggests that prophylactic measures to prevent occurrence of the one disorder might decrease the risk and incidence of other related disorders, either directly or indirectly.  相似文献

A meta-analysis of the impact of monensin on metabolism of dairy cattle was conducted following a search of the literature. A total of 59 studies with monensin feeding in dairy cattle were identified in which 30 papers and 45 trials contained metabolic data. The β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) data were obtained from over 4,000 cows and 115 trial sites. Data for each trial were extracted and analyzed using meta-analysis software in Stata. Estimated effect sizes of monensin were calculated on blood concentrations of BHBA, acetoacetate, nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), glucose, cholesterol, urea, calcium, insulin, and milk urea. Monensin use in lactating dairy cattle significantly reduced blood concentrations of BHBA 13%, acetoacetate 14%, and NEFA 7%. Monensin increased glucose 3% and urea 6%. Monensin had no significant effect on cholesterol, calcium, milk urea, or insulin. Heterogeneity was significant for BHBA and cholesterol [I2 (measure of variation beyond chance) = 37 and 54%, respectively]; therefore, random effects models were used for those analytes. Publication bias existed with the monensin effect on BHBA, with a tendency for studies to be published if there was a significant reduction in this ketone. Meta-regression analysis of the effect sizes obtained from the metabolic data showed that method of delivery, timing of administration, stage of lactation, and diet were influential in modifying effect size of monensin treatment. Use of top dress or delivery via a controlled release capsule reduced the magnitude of effect on BHBA (coefficient +0.353); however, top dress use compared with controlled release capsule or total mixed ration enhanced the monensin effect on glucose (coefficient +0.296). There was a greater impact with monensin on reducing BHBA in early lactation (coefficient −0.151) and in pasture-based trials (coefficient −0.194). Use of monensin in both the pre- and postcalving periods was associated with an enhanced impact on NEFA (coefficient −0.254). Monensin had less impact on serum glucose in the pre-calving time period (coefficient −0.237). These findings demonstrate an improvement in the energy metabolism of dairy cows supplemented with monensin.  相似文献

Urinary 3 methyl-histidine excretion was measured in high yielding dairy cows between 10 and 3 d precalving and between 3 and 9 d postcalving. Cows received a sodium monensin controlled-release capsule or a placebo 3 wk before calving. Monensin did not affect urinary 3 methyl-histidine. Average urinary 3 methyl-histidine excretion was significantly higher postcalving (4.11 mmol d(-1)) than precalving (2.48 mmol d(-1)). This increase is assumed to be predominantly due to the negative nitrogen balance in the postcalving period caused by insufficient nutrient intake to meet nutrient requirements, which necessitates catabolism of mainly myofibrillar protein.  相似文献

Twelve trials designed to test the effect of monensin on milk production were carried out at eight different research farms. Data from these studies were evaluated for effects of monensin on health and reproduction. Monensin was added to the concentrate starting either 2 wk before (293 cows) or 5 wk after calving (601 cows) for periods ranging 16 to 37 wk. Applied after calving, the incidence of clinical mastitis was reduced in the monensin-treated animals. Monensin decreased the rate of intramammary infection (approximated by a change from below to above 250,000 somatic cells in milk) in first lactation heifers by 13%. Indicated by an adjusted incidence rate ratio of 0.58 (P = 0.03), the case incidence of noninfectious lameness decreased from 31% in control cows to 18% in cows receiving monensin before calving. The time from calving to first service was shorter for cows fed monensin before calving. Monensin reduced calving to conception intervals in cows with endometritis during the pretreatment period. No significant effects of monensin were observed for the duration of intra mammory infection (somatic cells in milk above 250,000), infectious lameness, endometritis, cystic ovarian disease, a summary category of 'other diseases,' times from calving to first observed estrus, and from first service to conception.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of rumination times and days spent in a close-up group before calving (DCU) on early-lactation health and reproductive outcomes in dairy cows. Data were gathered for 719 cows located in a single herd. Herd management and reproductive records were analyzed for cows receiving treatment in the first 30 d of lactation (days in milk; DIM) for clinical mastitis, reproductive tract disease, ketosis, milk fever, and displaced abomasum. Rumination times for each cow were downloaded daily from the herd's automated collar system used to generate heat and health alerts for each cow beginning at 21 d precalving until 14 d postcalving. During the first 30 DIM, 121 cows (18%) developed at least 1 disease—any combination of ketosis (40 cows, 5.9% of total), mastitis (17 cows, 2.5%), metritis (75 cows, 11%), milk fever (17 cows, 2.5%), or displaced abomasum (28 cows, 4.1%); 305 cows (45%) were pregnant again at 100 DIM, and an additional 139 cows (20%) were pregnant at 150 DIM. Principal component analysis was used to determine the relationship between gestation length and DCU and their association with the odds of developing disease in early lactation. We did not find any significant association between precalving rumination time and disease within the first 30 DIM. Higher rumination time in the week before calving was shown to be strongly linked to a shorter time to subsequent pregnancy, whereas rumination times postcalving were not associated with changes in the time to pregnancy. Principal component analysis showed that a curvilinear combination of gestation length and DCU (principal component 1) was significantly associated with changes in disease incidence in the first 30 DIM. Gestation length and time spent in close up are important management factors in reducing the incidence of disease in early lactation, and rumination times around calving may help predict future reproductive outcomes.  相似文献

Dairy cows experience hypocalcemia at the onset of lactation; however, the contribution of bone metabolism to circulating Ca concentrations during the periparturient period is not well understood. Osteoprotegerin (OPG) protects against loss of skeletal mass by regulating osteoclastogenesis. We previously reported that the bone resorption increased around parturition in dairy cows from the perspective of bone markers in blood. The aim of this study was to explore osteoclastic bone resorption in periparturient dairy cows by measuring changes in serum OPG concentrations around calving. The OPG concentrations were evaluated in primiparous (n = 9) and multiparous (n = 9) cows at 21 d precalving and over 5 d after calving. Based on mixed model analyses, the multiparous cows had a higher serum OPG concentration than primiparous cows at precalving and exhibited a significant decline in serum OPG and Ca concentrations after calving. In contrast to multiparous cows, primiparous cows did not exhibit these changes. Therefore, we hypothesized that multiparous cows preserve their bone mineral content during late pregnancy and activate the osteoclastic bone resorption after calving. Based on our serum OPG data, we identified the different periparturient osteoclastic bone resorption patterns in healthy primiparous and multiparous dairy cows.  相似文献
