Nickel zinc ferrite (Ni-ZnFe2O4)-filled natural rubber (NR) composite was prepared at various loading of ferrite. The tensile properties included in this study were tensile strength, tensile modulus and elongation at break. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the composites increased up to 40 parts per hundred rubber (phr) of ferrite and then decreased at higher loading whereas the tensile modulus was increased gradually with increasing of ferrite loading. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to determine the wettability of filler in rubber matrix. From the observation, the increase of filler loading reduced the wettability of the filler. Thermal stability of the composites was conducted by using a thermogravimetry analyser (TGA). The incorporation of ferrite in NR composites enhanced the thermal stability of NR composites. The swelling test results indicate that the swelling percentage of the composites decreased by increasing of ferrite loading. The initial permeability, μi and quality factor, Q of magnetic properties of NR composites achieved maximum value at 60 phr of ferrite loading for frequency range between 5000–40,000 kHz. The maximum impedance, Z max of the NR composites was at the highest value at 80 phr ferrite loading for frequency range between 200–800 MHz.  相似文献

The effect of nanoclay loading on the alteration of tensile and dynamic mechanical properties of aramid short fibre‐filled styrene butadiene rubber composites was investigated. In all the composites, 20 phr of N330 black was used. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis was used to investigate the viscoelastic damping at lower dynamic strains. Compressive hysteresis was evaluated to characterize higher strain static damping properties. Matrix–fibre interaction and filler distribution were investigated using morphological analyses. Matrix–filler interface, estimated by the half height width of the tan δ peak, plays a major role in energy dissipation. The matrix–fibre interaction parameter shows a similar trend with low strain tensile stress values. Nanoclay addition to the composites leads to improved elongation at break and frequency damping properties. Compressive hysteresis reflects no improvement of hysteresis with nanoclay loading. Dynamic storage moduli, matrix–fibre interaction parameter and energy dissipation properties of the short fibre‐filled composites are negatively affected by nanoclay addition. However, ultimate elongation is improved markedly on nanoclay addition. In respect of tensile strength and elongation at break values, two composite samples (KF5NC10 and KF10NC10) offer optimum properties. Copyright © 2009 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Abstract

Natural rubber (NR) composites were prepared by incorporating rubberwood fibres at different loadings into the NR matrix in a mixing mill according to a base formulation. Tensile properties, swelling measurement and tensile fracture surfaces of gum and composites with 0, 10, 20, 30 and 50 phr of rubberwood fibres were studied. Incorporation of rubberwood fibres in the composites increases the tensile modulus but reduces the tensile strength and elongation at break. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies and swelling measurement indicate that the increasing rubberwood loading has weakened the rubber-filler interactions.  相似文献

Bentonite (Bt) with irregular shape and surface morphology was used as a new type of filler in EPDM. EPDM/Bt composites were prepared using a laboratory size two-roll mill by adding 0 to 70 phr Bt. The effects of Bt loading on curing characteristics, morphology, tensile and thermal properties of EPDM/Bt composite were studied. Scorch and curing time were decreased with 0 to 30 phr loading and increased subsequently at 50 and 70 phr. Tensile strength and elongation at break (Eb) were increased with increasing Bt loading from 0 to 50 phr and decreased at 70 phr, whereas the tensile modulus (M100%) shows an increasing trend with increasing Bt loading. Thermogravimetric analysis shows the enhancements of thermal properties with increasing Bt loading. Morphological studies of tensile fracture surfaces of EPDM/Bt composite proves good interaction between Bt particles and EPDM at 50 phr and formation of Bt agglomerates at 70 phr.  相似文献

Quasi-static mechanical properties of aramid fibres reinforced natural rubber/SBR composites are comprehensively investigated via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), uniaxial tensile tests, multi-step stress relaxation, and the Mullins experiment. The strength, stiffness, viscoelasticity, and Mullins effect of composites are analysed, and the micro failure mechanism is also explored. It is shown that the samples appear similar to a laminate plate with random short fibres in a plane. The results of the uniaxial tensile tests indicate that the tensile strength and elongation at failure decrease, while the stiffness increases following the addition of a small amount of aramid fibres into the rubber matrix. The multi-step relaxation and Mullins experiments reveal that the aramid-short-fibres weaken the viscoelasticity of rubber composites. Finally, the strain energy of the composite is divided into four parts, and one part is considered with respect to its application to the study of interface destruction between the matrix and fibre.  相似文献

Natural rubber composites were prepared by the incorporation of palm ash at different loadings into a natural rubber matrix with a laboratory‐size two‐roll mill (160 × 320 mm2) maintained at 70 ± 5°C in accordance with the method described by ASTM D 3184–89. A coupling agent, maleated natural rubber (MANR), was used to improve the mechanical properties of the natural rubber composites. The results indicated that the scorch time and cure time decreased with increasing filler loading, whereas the maximum torque exhibited an increasing trend. Increasing the palm ash loading increased the tensile modulus, but the tensile strength, fatigue life, and elongation at break decreased. The rubber–filler interactions of the composites decreased with increasing filler loading. Scanning electron microscopy of the tensile fracture surfaces of the composites and rubber–filler interaction studies showed that the presence of MANR enhanced the interfacial interaction of the palm ash filler and natural rubber matrix. The presence of MANR also enhanced the tensile properties and fatigue life of palm‐ash‐filled natural rubber composites. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

The structural performance of polymer composites reinforced with plant fibres when exposed to fire was experimentally evaluated and compared against an E‐glass fibre laminate. Fire testing under combined one‐sided radiant heating and static tensile loading revealed that flax, jute, or hemp fibre composites experience more rapid thermal softening and fail within much shorter times than the fibreglass laminate, which is indicative of vastly inferior structural performance in fire. The plant fibre composites soften and fail before the onset of thermal decomposition of the plant fibres and polymer matrix, whereas the E‐glass fibres provide the composite with superior tensile properties to higher temperatures and higher applied tensile stresses. The tensile performance of the three types of plant fibre composites in fire was not identical. When exposed to the same radiant heat flux, the flax fibre composite could withstand higher tensile stresses for longer times than the hemp and jute laminates, which showed similar performance.  相似文献

Biocomposites of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) reinforced with silane-treated peanut shell powder (SPSP) of different filler loadings and particle sizes were prepared by two roll mixing mills with sulfur as a vulcanizing agent. The cure characteristics of composites were studied, and they vulcanized at 160 °C. Test samples were prepared by compression moulding, and their physicomechanical properties, such as tensile strength tear strength, modulus, hardness, and abrasion resistance of SBR vulcanizates, were studied with filler loading 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 parts per hundred rubber (phr). Composites with 10 phr filler having small particle size exhibited better properties. The interfacial adhesion between filler and matrix has a major role in the properties of composites. Surface modification of PSP was done by silane coupling agent to improve the interfacial adhesion and it characterised by FTIR, XRD, TGA, UV, and SEM. Better properties are shown by the composites with SPSP. Thermal stability of the composites was also determined using thermogravimetric analysis.  相似文献

Abstract

The paper reports on the curing characteristics and mechanical properties of oil palm wood flour (OPWF) reinforced epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) composites. Three sizes of OPWF at different filler loadings were compounded with a two roll mill. The cure (t 90) and scorch times of all filler size decrease with increasing OPWF loading. Increasing OPWF loading in ENR compound resulted in reduction of tensile strength and elongation at break but increased tensile modulus, tear strength and hardness. The composites filled with smaller OPWF size showed higher tensile strength, tensile modulus and tear strength. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrographs showed that at lower filler loading the fracture of composites occurred mainly due to the breakage of fibre with minimum pull-out of fibres from the matrix. However as the filler loading is increased, the fibre pull-out became very prominent due to the lack of adhesion between fibre and rubber matrix.

The influence of starch on the properties of carbon‐black‐filled styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) composites was investigated. When the starch particles were directly melt‐mixed into rubber, the stress at 300% elongation and abrasion resistance decreased evidently with increasing starch amount from 5 to 20 phr. Scanning electron microscopy observations of the abrasion surface showed that some apparent craters of starch particles were left on the surface of the composite, which strongly suggested that the starch particles were large and that interfacial adhesion between the starch and rubber was relatively weak. To improve the dispersion of the starch in the rubber matrix, starch/SBR master batches were prepared by a latex compounding method. Compared with the direct mixing of the starch particles into rubber, the incorporation of starch/SBR master batches improved the abrasion resistance of the starch/carbon black/SBR composites. With starch/SBR master batches, no holes of starch particles were left on the surface; this suggested that the interfacial strength was improved because of the fine dispersion of starch. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis showed that the loss factor at both 0 and 60°C increased with increasing amount of starch at a small tensile deformation of 0.1%, whereas at a large tensile strain of 5%, the loss factor at 60°C decreased when the starch amount was varied from 5 to 20 phr. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Natural‐rubber‐based hybrid composites were prepared by the mixture of short cellulose fibers and silica of different relative contents with a 20‐phr filler loading with a laboratory two‐roll mill. The processability and tensile properties of the hybrid composites were analyzed. The tensile modulus improved, but the tensile strength and elongation at break decreased with increasing cellulose fiber content. The scorch safety improved with the addition of 5‐phr cellulose fiber in the composites. The Mooney viscosity significantly decreased with increasing cellulose fiber content. To modify the surface properties of the cellulose fiber and silica fillers, a silane coupling agent [bis(triethoxysilylpropyl)tetrasulfide, or Si69] was used. The effects of Si69 treatment on the processing and tensile properties of the hybrid composites were assessed. We found that the silane treatment of both fillers had significant benefits on the processability but little benefit on the rubber reinforcement. The strength of the treated hybrid composite was comparable to that of silica‐reinforced natural rubber. Furthermore, to investigate the filler surface modification and to determine the mixing effects, infrared spectroscopic and various microscopic techniques, respectively, were used. From these results, we concluded that the fillers were better dispersed in the composites, and the compatibility of the fillers and natural rubber increased with silane treatment. In conclusion, the hybridized use of short cellulose fibers from a renewable resource and silica with Si69 presented in this article offers practical benefits for the production of rubber‐based composites having greater processability and more environmental compatibility than conventional silica‐filler‐reinforced rubber. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Silicate matrix composites are potential candidates for high-temperature applications. In the present investigation, the effect of metallic (Cu) and non-metallic (SiC particulates, platelets, short fibres and whiskers) additions on the rheological behaviour of borosilicate matrix composites has been evaluated. The hot-pressed composites were tested both in compression and tension in the temperature range of 625–725°C. SiC reinforced composites tested in compression exhibited varying degree of strengthening and strain rate sensitivity depending on the volume fraction and morphology of reinforcements. The degree of strengthening and strain rate sensitivity depends on the volume fraction and morphology of reinforcements. Strengthening effect increased with the volume fraction and aspect ratio of reinforcements. The flow behaviour of composites changed from Newtonian to non-Newtonian with strain rate sensitivity index value changing from unity to 0.48. A similar trend was seen in the rate sensitivity of copper composites. However, copper additions decreased the strength of the composites at lower temperatures because of the softer copper phase. Pre-oxidation of copper particles had certain strengthening effect on the composite. The apparent viscosity of SiC reinforced composites increased with volume fraction and aspect ratio of reinforcements. However, in particulate composites, the viscosity found to increase with particle size. The mechanical/hydrodynamic interactions among the particulates appeared to be responsible for such a behaviour. With increasing strain rate, the viscosity decreased progressively confirming the shear thinning of the composites. The tensile ductility of the composites with 40 vol% reinforcements was evaluated at 700°C. While 400% elongation was observed in SiC particulate, platelet and copper composites, in short fibre/whisker composites, the tensile elongation values were only 150%. Further, the elongation of SiC platelet and copper composites improved by decreasing temperature and volume fraction of reinforcements, and also elongation values >500% were recorded. The tensile ductility of borosilicate composites was limited by onset and growth of cavities nucleated at the reinforcement/matrix interfaces.  相似文献

Onium ion‐modified montmorillonite (organoclay) was melt compounded with natural rubber (NR) in an internal mixer and cured by using a conventional sulfuric system. Epoxidized natural rubber with 50 mol % epoxidation (ENR 50) was used in 10 parts per hundred rubber (phr) as a compatibilizer. The effect of organoclay with different filler loading up to 10 phr was studied. Cure characteristics were determined by a Monsanto MDR2000 rheometer, whereas the tensile, compression, and tear properties of the nanocomposites were measured according to the related ASTM standards. While the torque maximum and torque minimum increased slightly, both scorch time and cure time reduced with the incorporation of organoclay. The tensile strength, elongation at break, and tear properties went through a maximum (at about 2 phr) as a function of the organoclay content. As expected, the hardness, moduli at 100% (M100) and 300% elongations (M300) increased continuously with increasing organoclay loading. The compression set decreased with incorporation of organoclay. The dispersion of the organoclay in the NR stocks was investigated by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Structural composites with a high content of renewable material were produced from natural fibres and an acrylated epoxidized soybean oil resin. Composites were prepared by spray impregnation followed by compression moulding at elevated temperature. The resulting composites had good mechanical properties in terms of tensile strength and flexural strength. Tensile testing as well as dynamical mechanical thermal analysis showed that increasing the fibre content, increased the mechanical properties. The resin can be reinforced with up to 70 wt % fibre without sacrifice in processability. The tensile modulus ranged between 5.8 and 9.7 GPa depending on the type of fibre mat. The study of the adhesion by low vacuum scanning electron microscopy shows that the fibres are well impregnated in the matrix. The aging properties were finally evaluated. This study shows that composites with a very high content of renewable constituents can be produced from soy bean oil resins and natural fibres. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Effect of plasticizer type on the kraft lignin–natural rubber composite microstructure and selected properties was determined. The composites were prepared with addition of a commonly used naphthenic oil plasticizer to study the decomposition product of polyurethane (glycerolysate) and its characteristics. Kraft lignin powder was incorporated into the natural rubber matrix in amounts of 10 and 40 parts per 100 parts of natural rubber (phr). The reference samples were prepared without any lignin present. The chemical interaction between the filler particles and natural rubber macromolecules was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and the adhesion was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results of the adhesion measurements confirmed poor distribution of lignin particles into the natural rubber matrix with increasing filler content. Optimal lignin content in the composites was 10 phr in the case of both plasticizers. Moreover, the results of FTIR verified the formation of non-covalent bonds and the need for modification of the filler to enhance the reinforcing effect in the natural rubber matrix. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and mechanical measurements proved that the specimen containing 10 phr of lignin with the use of glycerolysate as plasticizer displayed the highest mechanical performance. It was demonstrated that glycerolysate and naphthenic oil as plasticizing agents showed similar effect on the thermal properties of the prepared composites. Also, the measured mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, hardness, resilience, and abrasiveness confirmed these findings.  相似文献

Hybrid composites prepared by the incorporation of two or more different types of fibres into a single polymer matrix deserve much attention. This method of hybridisation of composites offers a profitable procedure for the fabrication of products while the resulting materials are noted for their high specific strength, modulus and thermal stability. The influence of the relative composition of short sisal/glass fibres, their length and distribution on the tensile properties of short sisal/glass intimately mixed polyethylene composites (SGRP) was examined. Different compositions of sisal and glass such as 70/30, 50/50 and 30/70 have been prepared with varying fibre lengths in the range of 1–10 mm. Emphasis has also been given to the variation of fibre–matrix adhesion with several fibre chemical modifications. Chemical surface modifications such as alkali, acetic anhydride, stearic acid, permanganate, maleic anhydride, silane and peroxides given to the fibres and matrix were found to be successful in improving the interfacial adhesion and compatibility between the fibre and matrix. The nature and extent of chemical modifications were analysed by infrared spectroscopy while improvement in fibre–matrix adhesion was checked by studying the fractography of composite samples using a scanning electron microscope. Assessment of water retention values has been found to be a successful tool to characterize the surface of the stearic acid modified fibres. It was found that the extent of improvement in tensile properties of SGRP varied with respect to the nature of chemical modifications between fibre and matrix. Improved mechanical anchoring and physical and chemical bonding between fibre and polyethylene matrix are supposed to be the reasons for superior tensile strength and Young's modulus in treated composites. Several secondary reasons such as high degree of fibre dispersion and reduced hydrophilicity in chemically modified fibres also are believed to play a role. Among the various chemical modifications, the best tensile strength and modulus was exhibited by the SGRP with benzoyl peroxide treated fibres. This is attributed to the peroxide‐initiated grafting of polyethylene on to the fibres. Copyright © 2004 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Jute (Hessian cloth) reinforced polymer composites were prepared with a mixture of 2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and aliphatic urethane diacrylate oligomer (EB-204), and then cured under gamma radiation. Thick pure polymer films (2 mm thickness) were prepared by using the same monomer and oligomer at different weight ratios, and 500 krad of total gamma radiation dose at 600 krad/hr was selected for the curing of all composites. Total radiation dose, jute content, and monomer concentration were optimized with the extent of mechanical properties. Among all resulting composites, the composite of 38% jute content at monomer:oligomer = 50:50 (w/w) ratios showed the better mechanical properties, such as 108% increase in tensile strength (TS), 58% increase in bending strength (BS), 138% increase in tensile modulus (TM), and 211% increase in bending modulus (BM) relative to pure polymer film. The gel content values were also found to increase with the increase of jute content in the composite. But the elongation at break (Eb) for both tensile and bending was found to decrease with increasing jute content. The best mechanical properties were obtained when jute fibers were pre-irradiated with UV radiation, such as 150% increase in TS, 90% increase in BS relative to polymer film, 19% increase in TS, and 15% increase in BS relative to untreated jute-based composites. A water uptake behavior investigation of the resulting composites was also performed and composites based on UV-treated jute showed the minimum water uptake value.  相似文献

The effect of filler loading and epoxidation on curing characteristics, dynamic properties, tensile properties, morphology, and rubber-filler interactions of paper-sludge-filled natural rubber compounds have been studied. Two different types of natural rubber, SMR L and ENR 50, having 0% and 50% of epoxidation and conventional vulcanization were used. Paper sludge was used as a filler and the loading range was from 0 to 40 phr. Compounding was carried out using a laboratory-sized two-roll mill. The scorch time for both rubber compounds decreased with filler loading. The cure time was found to decrease with increasing filler content for SMR L vulcanizates, whereas for ENR 50, the cure time seemed to be independent of the filler loading. Dynamic properties, i.e., maximum elastic torque, viscous torque, and tan delta, increase with filler loading in both grades of natural rubber. Results also indicate that both rubbers show increment in tensile modulus but inverse trend for elongation at break and tensile strength. However, for a fixed filler loading, ENR 50 compounds consistently exhibit higher maximum torque, modulus at 100% elongation, and modulus at 300% elongation, but lower elongation at break than SMR L compounds. In the case of tensile strength, ENR 50 possesses higher tensile strength than SMR L at 10 to 20 phr, but the difference is quite small at 30 and 40 phr. These findings might be associated with better rubber-filler interaction between the polar hydroxyl group of cellulose fiber and the epoxy group of ENR 50.  相似文献
