Supporting Mobile Commerce Applications Using Dependable Wireless Networks   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Mobile commerce (m-commerce) is an emerging discipline involving applications, mobile devices, middleware, and wireless networks. While most of existing e-commerce applications can be modified to run in a wireless environment, m-commerce also involves many more new applications that become possible only due to the wireless infrastructure. These applications include mobile financial services, user and location specific mobile advertising, mobile inventory management, wireless business re-engineering, and mobile interactive games. In addition to device and wireless constraints, mobile commerce would also be impacted by the dependability of wireless infrastructure. Unlike e-commerce applications that usually run on fixed networking infrastructure of fairly high dependability (approaching to about 100%), m-commerce applications may not receive such high dependability from the existing and emerging wireless infrastructure. So far, most of the m-commerce research focuses on applications, devices, and security issues. We believe that some work is necessary in addressing the dependability challenges of the wireless infrastructure. In this paper, we present (a) the dependability issues of wireless infrastructure, (b) several architectures to improve the dependability of wireless networks, and (c) a simulation model and results on wireless dependability for m-commerce. The results show that a significant improvement is possible in wireless dependability for supporting m-commerce applications.  相似文献

While the market potentials and impacts of web-based e-commerce are still in the ascendant, the advances in wireless technologies and mobile networks have brought about a new business opportunity and research attention, what is termed mobile commerce. Commonly, mobile commerce is considered to be another new application of existing web-based e-commerce onto wireless networks, but as an independent business area, mobile commerce has its own advantages and challenges as opposed to traditional e-commerce applications. This paper focuses on exploring the unique features of mobile commerce as compared with traditional e-commerce. Also, there are still some limitations arisen in m-commerce in contrast to web-based e-commerce. Finally, current state of mobile commerce in Japan is presented in brief, with an introduction of several cases involving mobile commerce applications in today's marketplace.  相似文献

Wireless communication advances have enabled emerging video streaming applications to mobile handheld devices. For example, it is possible to display and interact with complex 3D virtual environments on mobile devices that don’t have enough computational and storage capabilities (e.g. smart phones, PDAs) through remote rendering techniques, where a server renders 3D data and streams the corresponding image flow to the client. However, due to fluctuations in bandwidth characteristics and limited mobile device CPU capabilities, it is extremely challenging to design effective systems for streaming interactive multimedia over wireless networks. This paper presents a novel approach based on a controller that can automatically adjust streaming parameters basing on feedback measures from the client device. Experimental results prove the effectiveness of the proposed solution in coping with bandwidth changes, thus providing high Quality of Service (QoS) in remote visualizations.  相似文献

Multiple quantum well (MQW) optical modulators have a wide range of applications in fiber-optic and remote communication systems. One of the challenges in producing reliable devices is maintaining the necessary PIN electrical characteristics while having large areas of complex MQW structures for optical processing. We report the first direct correlation between crystalline material imperfections and reverse bias behavior in MQW PIN devices. Molecular beam epitaxy grown GaAs/AlGaAs and strained InGaAs/AlGaAs MQW PIN structures are examined. Defects originating in the epitaxial material provide a conducting path along the PIN junction degrading the device performance and lowering the yield. Defectectomy, a method of eliminating the crystalline defects and restoring the device characteristics and improving the yield is described.  相似文献

We present MAGICS, a mobile agent-based system for supporting business-to-consumer electronic commerce (e-commerce) or mobile commerce (m-commerce) applications. To use the system, consumers first provide their buying requirements to a proxy/agent server through a Web browser or a wireless application protocol (WAP) terminal. Having obtained the requirements, mobile agents are generated to carry out tasks for the consumers including getting offers from merchants, evaluating offers, and even completing purchases. In the case of mobile commerce, consumers can generate a mobile agent to conduct a search and evaluation in the digital marketspace before making a purchase in the physical marketplace. To make it possible to choose an offer that best satisfies the consumer's requirement(s), we present a mathematical model for evaluating multiple decision factors. To test the basic functions of the mobile agent-based Internet commerce system (MAGICS), we have built a prototype system. To minimize the average cost of a product (including the cost of sending agents), we have also developed an analytical model that can determine how many agents should be sent to compare prices. Four different price distributions and some real price information are analyzed based on the model. The analysis provides valuable insights into the design of mobile agent-based shopping applications for m-commerce, in particular, and for e-commerce, in general.  相似文献

A true multimedia device is emerging that might become a powerful tool in the age of converged communication; computing, and content (CCC). Communication, computing, and content are converging, but this convergence's process has the characteristic of people viewing the converged space through the viewpoint of their own area. Thus, it's not uncommon to see CCC dominated by one area. The most interesting example is that of phones. People started realizing that mobile phones are powerful and are likely to become a dominant CCC device. Computing people got into action and now we see an increasing number of computer-like phones appearing. These devices often have full keyboards for interfacing with the Internet and email. We describe an InGaAsP waveguide PIN photodetector that (unlike conventional PINs) provides for light absorption perpendicular to current collection, a feature that results in high-speed, high-efficiency and relatively bias-insensitive operation. Human Computer Interaction is a primary factor in the success or failure of any device but if an objective view is taken of the current mobile phone market you would be forgiven for thinking usability was secondary to aesthetics. Many phone manufacturers modify the design of phones to be different than the competition and to target fashion trends, usually at the expense of usability and performance. There is a lack of awareness among many buyers of the usability of the device they are purchasing and the disposability of modern technology is an effect rather than a cause of this. Designing new text entry methods for mobile devices can be expensive and labour-intensive. The assessment and comparison of a new text entry method with current methods is a necessary part of the design process. The best way to do this is through an empirical evaluation. The aim of the paper is to establish which mobile phone text input method best suits the requirements of a select group of target users. This study used a diverse range of users to compare devices that are in everyday use by most of the adult population. The proliferation of the devices is as yet unmatched by the study of their application and the consideration of their user friendliness.  相似文献

Mobile phones with embedded sensors have been applied in various collaborative sensing applications. To encourage mobile phone users to perform collaborative sensing, the data demanders usually pay mobile phone users for required data. In this paper, we study the Minimum Payment of Attaining the Required Data with mobile phones (MPARD) problem in collaborative sensing network: given sensing regions \(R = \{R_1, R_2, \ldots , R_m\}\) , the set of requisite data \(D_i\) for each sensing region \(R_i\) and a set of mobile phones \(M\) , the \(MPARD\) problem studies how to select mobile phones to obtain all the required data such that the data demanders’ total payment to mobile phone users is minimized. In reality, some systems need the fresh sensing data from mobile phones at each pre-determined time slot, and others don’t require the real-time data and the sensing data from previous time slots is also deemed useful. Based on the above two different requirements of data timeliness, we first define two subproblems derived from \(MPARD\) problem: \(MPARD_t\) and \(MPARD_p\) . After that, for each subproblem, we propose an approximation algorithm for the situation where the trajectories of mobile phones are determinate and a heuristic for the situation where trajectories are unknown. Simulation results demonstrate that our algorithms are efficient.  相似文献

Mobile commerce (m-commerce) refers to an ability to conduct wireless commerce transactions using mobile applications in mobile devices. M-commerce applications can range from as simple as an address book synchronization to as complicated as credit card transactions. M-commerce is expected to grow dramatically in the near future supporting simple to complex commerce transactions. Even though the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is designed to facilitate the development of wireless applications, it will not be sufficient to handle complex business transactions that require cooperation of different service applications. In order to handle these complex mobile commerce transactions efficiently, an intelligent, robust and scalable framework that provides diverse m-commerce services is required. Many parties have already demonstrated telemedicine applications that use cellular phones and the Internet. A current trend in telecommunication is the convergence of wireless communication and computer network technologies, and the emergence of wireless application protocol (WAP) devices is an example. Since WAP will also be a common feature found in future mobile communication devices, it is worthwhile to investigate its use in telemedicine. This paper describes the implementation and experiences with a WAP-based telemedicine system for patient-monitoring that has been developed in our laboratory. It utilizes WAP devices as mobile access terminals for general inquiry and patient-monitoring services. Authorized users can browse the patients' general data, monitored blood pressure (BP), and electrocardiogram (ECG) on WAP devices in store-and-forward mode. The applications, written in wireless markup language (WML), WMLScript, and Perl, resided in a content server. A MySQL relational database system was set up to store the BP readings, ECG data, patient records, clinic and hospital information, and doctors' appointments with patients. A wireless ECG subsystem was built for recording ambulatory ECG in an indoor environment and for storing ECG data into the database. For testing, a WAP phone compliant with WAP 1.1 was used at GSM 1800 MHz by circuit-switched data (CSD) to connect to the content server through a WAP gateway, which was provided by a mobile phone service provider in Hong Kong. Data were successfully retrieved from the database and displayed on the WAP phone. The system shows how WAP can be feasible in remote patient-monitoring and patient data retrieval.  相似文献

Remote user authentication schemes provide a system to verify the legitimacy of remote users’ authentication request over insecure communication channel. In the past years, many authentication schemes using password and smart card have been proposed. However, password might be guessed, leaked or forgotten and smart card might be shared, lost or stolen. In contrast, the biometrics which utilize biological characteristics, such as face, fingerprint or iris, have no such weakness. With the trend of mobile payment, more and more applications of mobile payment use biometrics to replace password and smart card. In this paper, we propose a biometric-based remote authentication scheme substituting biometric and mobile device bounded by user for password and smart card. This scheme is more convenient, suitable and securer than the schemes using smart cards on mobile payment environment.
