In 2 experiments rats were trained on a switching discrimination, with 4 occasion setters, A, B, C, and D and 2 target stimuli, x and y. When signaled either by A or by B, x was reinforced with food and y was not, whereas when signaled either by C or by D these reinforcement relations were reversed (i.e., A: → x+, A: y → ?, B: x → +, B: y → ?, C: x → ?, C: y → +, D: x → ?, D: y → +). In a subsequent Stage A was paired with shock, and then the degree to which food–reinforced (Experiment 1a) and nonreinforced (Experiment 1b) presentations of x and y were capable of eliciting fear was assessed. Those conditioned stimulus (CS)/unconditioned stimulus (US) relations that had been operative in the presence of the fear-eliciting occasion setter A (i.e., x → +, y → ?) elicited more fear than the alternative CS/US combinations (i.e., x → ?, y → +). Through summation tests in conditioned suppression with rats we assessed the effects of distribution of trials across days (Experiment 1) and intertrial interval (ITI) (Experiment 2) on the degree of backward conditioned inhibition established through signaled and unsignaled unconditioned stimuli (USs). Two backward conditioned inhibitory stimuli (CS-s) were established within subjects: One backward CS- followed signaled shocks; the other followed unsignaled shocks. After 12 daily sessions (Experiment 1), the signaled backward CS- was strongly inhibitory and significantly more inhibitory than the unsignaled backward CS-. When the same number of trials occurred in a single long session, performances to both CS-s converged at moderate levels. At the 90-s ITI, (Experiment 2) the signaled and unsignaled backward CS-s were nearly equivalent in effectiveness. When the ITI was 540 s, performances diverged, and signaled backward CS- was substantially more effective; the longer ITI facilitated inhibitory backward conditioning based upon signaled USs but prevented the development of inhibitory backward conditioning based upon unsignaled USs. These functionally opposite effects on backward conditioned inhibition, depending on whether the US was signaled or not, are anticipated by Wagner's "standard operating procedure" (SOP) model of short-term memory. Four experiments investigated discrimination learning when the duration of the intertrial interval (ITI) signaled whether or not the next conditional stimulus (CS) would be paired with food pellets. Rats received presentations of a 10-s CS separated half the time by long ITIs and half the time by short ITIs. When the long ITI signaled that the CS would be reinforced and the short interval signaled that it would not be (Long+/Short?), rats learned the discrimination readily. However, when the short ITI signaled that the CS would be reinforced and the long interval signaled that it would not (Short+/Long?), discrimination learning was much slower. Experiment 1 compared Long+/Short? and Short+/Long? discrimination learning with 16-min/4-min or 4-min/1-min ITI combinations. Experiment 2 found no evidence that Short+/Long? learning is inferior because the temporal cue corresponding to the short interval is ambiguous. Experiment 3 found no evidence that Short+/Long? learning is poor because the end of a long ITI signals a substantial reduction in delay to the next reinforcer. Long+/Short? learning may be faster than Short+/Long?because elapsing time involves exposure to a sequence of hypothetical stimulus elements (e.g., A then B), and feature-positive discriminations (AB+/A?) are learned quicker than feature-negative discriminations (A+/AB?). Consistent with this view, Experiment 4 found a robust feature-positive effect when sequentially presented CSs played the role of elements A and B. Within-subjects procedures with rats assessed the associative structures acquired during conditioning trials in which the interval between the stimuli and food was either short or long (i.e., A–10 s→food and B–40 s→food). In Experiments 1 and 2, after these conditioning trials, A and B served as second-order reinforcers for 2 further stimuli (i.e., X→A and Y→B); whereas Experiment 3 used a sensory preconditioning procedure in which X→A and Y→B trials occurred before the conditioning trials, and rats were finally tested with X and Y. In each experiment, Y elicited greater responding at test than did X. This finding supports the contention that the long-lived trace of B (associated with food on B–40 s→food trials) is more similar to the memory of B that was associatively provoked by Y, than is the short-lived trace of A (associated with food on A–10 s→food trials) to the memory of A that was associatively provoked by X. These conclusions were reinforced by the effects of a neural manipulation that disrupted discrimination learning involving the short traces of stimuli but not the long traces of the same stimuli. The influence of trial spacing on simple conditioning is well established: When successive reinforced conditioned stimulus, CS+, trials are separated by a short interval (massed training), conditioned responding emerges less rapidly than when such trials are separated by longer intervals (spaced training). This study examined the influence of trial spacing on the acquisition of an appetitive visual discrimination in rats. Experiments 1 and 2 established that massed training facilitates the acquisition of such discriminations. The results of subsequent experiments demonstrated that this trial-spacing effect reflects the proximity of nonreinforced, CS-, trials to preceding (Experiment 3) and signaled (Experiment 4) presentations of the reinforcer. Experiment 5 showed that the facilitation of discrimination learning with massed training reflected an effect on learning rather than performance. Previous research with keylight conditioned stimuli has revealed that pigeons failed to show inhibition by Stimulus B over Stimulus C in BC versus C testing after A+, AB–, ABC+ training where Stimulus A and Stimulus Compound ABC had signaled food, and Stimulus Compound AB had signaled no food. Indeed, B slightly facilitated responding to C on the BC trials. The present research addressed the same issue with multimodality stimulus arrangements in autoshaping with pigeons, conditioned suppression with rats, and instrumental discrimination learning with rats. Stimulus B facilitated responding to C if A and B were of the same modality and C was of a different modality. However, B inhibited responding to C if A and C were of the same modality and B was of a different modality, or if B and C were of the same modality and A was of a different modality. Rabbits received conditional discrimination training using contextual stimuli to set the occasion for stimulus pairings during eyelid conditioning. Specifically, animals were exposed to either the presence or the absence of an oscillating chamber light throughout the intertrial interval (50 +/- 10 s). For half the animals, this light signaled paired presentations of a discrete tone conditioned stimulus (CS) and air puff unconditioned stimulus (US) while darkness signaled presentations of only the tone CS. The remaining animals experienced the opposite contextual relationship to the conditioning stimuli. These trial types occurred pseudo-randomly across a session, with all transitions between contextual settings (i.e., light or dark) taking place immediately at the CS-US offset. Under these conditions, animals successfully utilized the contextual stimuli as conditional cues for differential responding to the shared CS. Moreover, both light and dark were equally effective as discriminative stimuli. A subset of animals received further training in which the contextual contingency was removed by restricting all conditioning to the CS-alone context. Without the contingency in place, subsequent CS presentations (paired and CS-alone) evoked equivalent conditioned responding across three sessions of training. Following the reinstatement of the contextual contingencies, discriminatory responding was immediately observed and returned to previous levels within three sessions. Finally, animals appeared to use the static representation of the conditional cue, rather than the phasic transition between cues, for discriminatory responding. Discrimination of the eyeblink conditioned response (CR) between conditioned stimuli (CSs) of different durations and modalities was examined across development in rats. Interstimulus interval (ISI) discrimination was evident at Postnatal Days 23-34 in Experiment 1, and earlier CR peak latencies and enhanced CR amplitudes were seen to the long CS in the ISI discrimination group relative to a control group receiving the short CS without reinforcement. Experiment 2 showed that early CR peak latencies and enhanced CR amplitudes to the long CS in the ISI discrimination group were due to associative pairing of the short CS and unconditioned stimulus. Experiment 3 demonstrated ISI discrimination in adults that was improved relative to younger subjects, but with no enhancement of CR amplitude to the long CS in the ISI discrimination group. Examined conditioned suppression of photokinesis (CSPK) by the marine mollusc in 3 experiments. In each experiment, groups of Ss received light (conditioned stimulus, CS) paired with high-speed orbital rotation (unconditioned stimulus, UCS), light and rotation explicitly unpaired, or no exposure to these stimuli. 24 hrs after training, all Ss were tested for CSPK in the presence of the light. 50 CS–UCS pairings resulted in a marginal CSPK, whereas 100 and 150 pairings produced strong CSPK. In Exp 2, delay between CS onset and UCS onset was varied between 1 and 10 s. The 10-s interstimulus interval (ISI) did not support conditioning, whereas 1-s and 2-s ISIs were effective. In Exp 3, CS–UCS pairings in which the CS preceded the onset of the UCS and ended with the offset of the UCS evoked stronger CSPK than either a CS that preceded the UCS and ended with its onset or a CS that was paired in simultaneous compound with the UCS. CS–UCS contiguity and the forward ISI act additively to establish the CS–UCS association. No differences were observed between groups that were untreated and that received the CS and UCS unpaired. Four pigeons responded on a concurrent-chains schedule in four experiments that examined whether the effectiveness of a stimulus as a conditioned reinforcer is best described by a global approach, as measured by the average interreinforcement interval, or by a local contextual approach, as measured by the onset of the stimulus preceding the conditioned reinforcer. The interreinforcement interval was manipulated by the inclusion of an intertrial interval, which increased the overall time to reinforcement but did not change the local contingencies on a given trial A global analysis predicted choice for the richer alternative to decrease with the inclusion of an intertrial interval, whereas a local analysis predicted no change in preference. Experiment 1 examined sensitivity to intertrial intervals when each was signaled by the same houselight that operated throughout the session. In Experiment 2, the intertrial interval always was signaled by the stimulus correlated with the richer terminal link. In Experiment 3, the intertrial interval was signaled by the keylights correlated with the initial links and two novel houselights. Experiment 4 provided free food pseudorandomly during the intertrial interval. In all experiments, subjects' preferences were consistent with a local analysis of choice in concurrent chains. These results are discussed in terms of delay-reduction theory, which traditionally has failed to distinguish global and local contexts.  相似文献

In 2 experiments using the rabbit conditioned eyeblink preparation, the conditions under which a Pavlovian conditioned stimulus/stimuli (CS) potentiates or diminishes the unconditioned response (UCR) were examined. Results indicate that, after discrimination training (CS+ vs CS–), the CS+ diminished UCR amplitude at the training interstimulus interval (ISI). When CS+ trials were segregated into trials on which a conditioned response (CR) did or did not occur, the CS+ diminished the UCR when it elicited a CR, but not when a CR failed to occur. When the CS-unconditioned stimulus (UCS) interval was lengthened to 10 sec, the CS+ reliably potentiated the eyeblink UCR on CR trials but did not potentiate responding on trials on which a CR was absent. Results are discussed in terms of the modulatory effects and temporal properties of conditioned fear and an associatively produced decrement in UCS processing. An intratrial proactive interference design was used to examine the nature of pigeons' memory for duration in a delayed matching task. Short (2 s) or long (10 s) target samples were preceded on test trials by a short or long presample. The durations were consistent on some trials (short-short or long-long) and inconsistent on others (short-long or long-short). Contrary to predictions based on prospective or categorical coding, accuracy was not related to duration consistency. Instead, accuracy was reduced on short-short and long-short trials and somewhat enhanced on short-long and long-long trials, suggesting that the Ss "summed across" the durations. This occurred even with a 10-s interstimulus interval (Experiment 1) and even when the presample and target sample were physically distinct (Experiment 2). Lesions of retrosplenial cortex (RSP) disrupt spatial and contextual learning, suggesting that RSP may have a fundamental role in processing overlapping, or simultaneously presented stimuli. If so, then RSP lesions might also be expected to disrupt learning that requires the concurrent processing of phasic conditioned stimuli. In Experiment 1, rats were trained in a compound feature negative discrimination task in which a tone was presented and immediately followed by food on some trials, while on other trials a visual stimulus was simultaneously presented along with the tone and not reinforced. Normal rats learned to discriminate between the trials but RSP-lesioned rats exhibited low levels of conditioning on both types of trials. Experiment 2 demonstrated that this effect was not simply due to a general inability to form associations, since RSP-lesioned rats exhibited normal responding when the visual stimulus was presented alone and paired with food. These findings support the view that RSP has an important role in learning that involves the processing of simultaneously presented stimuli and have implications for understanding the functional relationship between the hippocampus and RSP. Three appetitive Pavlovian conditioning experiments with rats examined the associability of stimuli A and B that had a history of compound conditioning (AB+), relative to stimuli X and Y that had a history of conditioning in isolation (X+, Y+). Following this training, Experiment 1 revealed that conditioned responding was higher to X and Y than to A and B (overshadowing). In a subsequent AY+, AX?, BY? test discrimination, the AY/BY discrimination was solved more readily than the AY/AX discrimination. In Experiment 2, following AB+, X+, Y+ training, A and Y were presented as a compound and signaled the availability of reinforcement upon the performance of an instrumental response. Test trials in which A and Y were presented alone, and in extinction, revealed that A acquired greater control of instrumental responding than Y. Experiment 3 revealed that following AB+, X+, Y+ training, A and B served as more effective discriminative stimuli for instrumental responding than X and Y. Overall, these results imply that the associability of stimuli conditioned in compound is higher than stimuli conditioned in isolation. Two experiments aimed at understanding the temporal characteristics of trace-conditioned heart-rate responses to a 0.5-s tone (conditioned stimulus [CS]) in restrained rats. A CS paired with a tail-shock (unconditioned stimulus [UCS]) elicited lasting bradycardiac responses. The magnitude and extinction rate of conditioned responses (CR) were independent of the CS–US interval (interstimulus interval [ISI], 3 s to 20 s). Unreinforced test trials were analyzed for CR topography. Responding was delayed in groups with longer ISIs, but CR latencies, peak and decay times were not proportional to the ISI Response peaks tended to cluster either about 6 s after CS onset, or about 10 s with a slow decay, depending on the ISI. The authors postulated 2 components of auditory stimulus traces involved in cardiac conditioning, maximally active 6 s and 10 s respectively after CS onset. The topography of the CR could be constrained to combinations of associative strength and instantaneous activity of these 2 components. Pigeons were trained initially on a delayed matching task in which colors served as sample and comparison stimuli. During subsequent training, additional stimuli compounded with the sample signaled whether that trial involved a short (1 s) or a long (5 s) delay. In Experiment 1, miscuing reduced accuracy at the short delay markedly and tended to increase accuracy at the long delay slightly. Experiments 2 and 3 revealed a robust effect of cuing when the cues followed sample termination, thereby refuting the view that such cues evoke differential attention to the sample stimulus. Experiment 4 revealed that the cues did not influence rate of forgetting, and Experiment 5 revealed no effect of point of cue placement within the retention interval. It was concluded that cues correlated with retention interval length modulated matching accuracy independently of memory, perhaps by signaling different rates of reinforcement. In 2 experiments, separate groups of rats were given stimulus conditioning, temporal conditioning, untreated control and (in Experiment 2) learned irrelevance control procedures followed by a compound with both stimulus and temporal cues. Stimulus conditioning consisted of a random 15-s duration conditioned stimulus (CS) followed by food; temporal conditioning consisted of food–food intervals of fixed 90 s (Experiment 1) or fixed 75?+?random 15 s (Experiment 2). The stimulus group abruptly increased responding after CS onset, and the temporal group gradually increased responding over the food–food interval. When the food–food interval was fixed 90 s, the temporal cue exerted stronger control in the compound, whereas when the food–food interval was fixed 75?+?random 15 s, the stimulus cue exerted stronger control. The strength of conditioning, temporal gradients of responding, and cue competition effects appear to reflect simultaneous timing of multiple intervals. Four experiments with rats examined the effects of a context switch on inhibition that was acquired during a feature-negative discrimination. A target CS was paired with food when it was presented alone but occurred without food when it was combined with a feature stimulus. A context switch following training did not disrupt inhibition conditioned to the feature. However, responding to the target was more difficult to inhibit when it was tested in a different context. It is suggested that both the target and the feature acquired inhibition, as well as the target's inhibition, were especially sensitive to the context. The feature may inhibit responding to the target by directly suppressing the representation of the food and by activating the target's own inhibitory association with food, which is at least partly context-specific. In 2 experiments, rats received a biconditional discrimination wherein separate presentations of A and B signaled 1 pair of associations (X?→?food and Y?→?no food) and presentations of C and D signaled a different pair of associations (X?→?no food and Y?→?food). In Exp 1, A, B, C, and D were diffuse contextual stimuli in which the associations were embedded. In Exp 2, A and C were contextual stimuli whereas B and D were features that immediately preceded the associations. To assess the associative structures acquired during training, all rats then received a revaluation procedure in which A was paired with shock and C was not. In both experiments, greater generalized suppression of behavior was observed in the presence of B than in the presence of D. These results indicate that contextual stimuli share with features the capacity to evoke the associations that they have signaled. In Experiments 1, 2, and 3, pigeons were trained with an ABC+ BCo discrimination, in which three stimuli, A, B, and C, were presented together and paired with food, and the compound BC was followed by nothing; they were also trained with a DEF+ Eo Fo discrimination in which stimuli E and F were presented separately and followed by nothing, whereas the compound DEF was paired with food. On completion of discrimination training, test trials with the feature A consistently revealed a higher rate of responding than with D. In Experiment 4, reinforced presentations of D were intermixed with the DEF+ Eo Fo discrimination. Test trials revealed that E enhanced responding when it was paired with F, but it had the opposite effect when paired with D.
