Reproductive disorders in the periparturient dairy cow   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Incidence, predisposing factors, and implications of various reproductive disorders (dystocia, twinning, stillbirth, retained placenta, cystic ovaries, anovulation, infections of the reproductive tract, metritis, and abnormal health status) are reviewed as to their inter-relationships and collective impact on reproductive performance, milk yield and predisposition to other diseases or disorders in the periparturient dairy cow. All reproductive disorders reviewed reviewed reduce reproductive performance either directly or indirectly. Concurrent milk yield was reduced marginally in a few studies as a consequence of twinning, retained placenta, cystic ovaries, metritis, or other uterine disorders, and in cows with an abnormal health status. There is strong evidence for associated losses in milk yield following surgical delivery of a stillborn calf. We conclude that most periparturient disorders occur as a complex, rather than as a single abnormality. Cows with one disorders are at increased risk for other disorders, including metabolic ones. In contrast, actual milk yield or potential for high production generally does not predispose cows to increased risk for any of the reproductive disorders. The literature suggests that prophylactic measures to prevent occurrence of the one disorder might decrease the risk and incidence of other related disorders, either directly or indirectly.  相似文献

Nutritional management during the dry period may affect susceptibility of cows to metabolic and infectious diseases during the periparturient period. Thirty-five multiparous Holstein cows were used to determine the effect of prepartum intake, postpartum induction of ketosis, and periparturient disorders on metabolic status. Cows were fed a diet from dry-off to parturition at either ad libitum intake or restricted intake [RI; 80% of calculated net energy for lactation (NEL) requirement]. After parturition, all cows were fed a lactation diet. At 4 d in milk (DIM), cows underwent a physical examination and were classified as healthy or having at least one periparturient disorder (PD). Healthy cows were assigned to the control (n = 6) group or the ketosis induction (KI; n = 9) group. Cows with PD were assigned to the PD control (PDC; n = 17) group. Cows in the control and PDC groups were fed for ad libitum intake. Cows in the KI group were fed at 50% of their intake on 4 DIM from 5 to 14 DIM or until signs of clinical ketosis were observed; then, cows were returned to ad libitum intake. During the dry period, ad libitum cows ate more than RI cows; the difference in intake resulted in ad libitum cows that were in positive energy balance (142% of NEL requirement) and RI cows that were in negative energy balance (85% of NEL requirement). Prepartum intake resulted in changes in serum metabolites consistent with plane of nutrition and energy balance. Prepartum intake had no effect on postpartum intake, serum metabolites, or milk yield, but total lipid content of liver at 1 d postpartum was greater for ad libitum cows than for RI cows. The PD cows had lower intake and milk yield during the first 4 DIM than did healthy cows. During the ketosis induction period, KI cows had lower intake, milk yield, and serum glucose concentration but higher concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids and β-hydroxybutyrate in serum as well as total lipid and triacylglycerol in liver than did control cows. Cows with PD had only modest alterations in metabolic variables in blood and liver compared with healthy cows. The negative effects of PD and KI on metabolic status and milk yield were negligible by 42 DIM, although cows with PD had lower body condition score and BW. Prepartum intake did not affect postpartum metabolic status or milk yield. Periparturient disorders and induction of ketosis negatively affected metabolic status and milk yield during the first 14 DIM.  相似文献

The effect of supplemental chromium as chromium-methionine (Cr-Met) on production and metabolic parameters was investigated in 48 cows from 28 d before expected calving date through 28 d of lactation. Average body weight (BW) was 730 +/- 61 kg before treatment. Treatments were supplementation of 0, 0.03, 0.06, and 0.12 mg of Cr as Cr-Met/kg of BW(0.75). Dry matter intake increased linearly and quadratically during the prepartum and postpartum periods, respectively, and body condition score loss decreased linearly during the postpartum period with increasing Cr-Met. Increasing Cr-Met supplementation caused quadratic increases in milk, fat, and lactose yields. Treatments did not affect concentrations of blood metabolites and liver triglyceride. Serum insulin concentration and molar ratio of insulin to glucose for cows receiving Cr-Met were lower than for cows not receiving Cr-Met, but they increased quadratically with increasing Cr-Met. Glucose tolerance tests (GTT) were conducted on d 10 prepartum and d 28 postpartum. Chromium-methionine supplementation attenuated insulin sensitivity prepartum and enhanced glucose tolerance postpartum, but not prepartum. Basal insulin concentrations for cows receiving Cr-Met were higher than for cows not receiving Cr-Met during the prepartum GTT. During the postpartum GTT, peak glucose concentration and clearance rate decreased and half-life (t(1/2)) and time to reach basal concentration (T) were prolonged quadratically by increasing Cr-Met. Additionally, peak insulin concentration, area under the curve, and molar ratio of insulin to glucose were higher for cows not receiving Cr-Met than for cows receiving Cr-Met and t(1/2) and T were shortened quadratically by increasing Cr-Met.  相似文献

Logistic regression was used to investigate the effects of host characteristics, production, and 23 veterinary diagnoses on the odds of contracting seven metabolic disorders among 61,124 Finnish Ayrshire cows that calved during 1983. Cows in higher producing herds were at increased risk of parturient paresis, udder edema, and ketosis. Cows that had higher previous yields were at increased risk of parturient and nonparturient paresis and ketosis. All of the metabolic disorders except udder edema were directly interrelated. Dystocia, prolapsed uterus, other infertility, and abortion were not risk factors for any of the seven metabolic disorders; however, retained placenta, early metritis, traumatic reticuloperitonitis, acute and chronic mastitis, and foot or leg injury each were direct risk factors for at least two metabolic disorders.  相似文献

Lipomobilization is essential for dairy cows to balance the energy requirement for milk production in early lactation. This study aimed to determine the role of hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) and its activation by phosphorylation at Ser 660 (HSLp660) and 563 (HSLp563) in different adipose tissue depots as influenced by time and postpartum diet in dairy cows. Biopsy samples were obtained from s.c. (SCAT) and retroperitoneal (RPAT) adipose tissues of 20 Holstein cows 21 d prepartum, and 1 and 21 d postpartum. After d 1 postpartum, cows were randomly assigned to 2 groups (n = 10). Groups received diets with either a concentrate-to-roughage ratio on a dry matter basis of 30:70% (low-concentrate, LC, group) or 60:40% (high-concentrate group), fed until the third biopsy sampling 21 d postpartum. Dry matter intake, milk yield, and milk composition were recorded. Blood samples were taken weekly, starting 21 d prepartum and analyzed for nonesterified fatty acids, β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), glucose, and insulin. Protein expression of HSL and its extent of phosphorylation in adipose tissue were measured by semiquantitative Western blotting. Total HSL expression was lower in both adipose tissues 1 d after calving compared with prepartum sampling (SCAT: 4.10 ± 0.5 vs. 2.4 ± 0.3; RPAT: 11.1 ± 1.3 vs. 6.6 ± 1.1). Phosphorylation at Ser 660 was higher 21 d postpartum compared with 21 d prepartum in RPAT (2.9 ± 0.3 vs. 4.6 ± 0.6). Phosphorylation at Ser 563 was higher 21 d postpartum than 21 d prepartum in SCAT (0.6 ± 0.1 vs. 3.9 ± 1.1), and in RPAT a difference was observed between 21 d prepartum and 1 d postpartum (1.0 ± 0.1 vs. 3.3. ± 0.6). On d 21 postpartum, the LC group showed a lower extent of Ser 563 phosphorylation in RPAT (3.9 ± 0.8 vs.10.0 ± 1.9) and a higher concentration of serum BHBA (0.77 ± 0.05 vs. 0.47 ± 0.11) than did the high-concentrate group. An inhibitory influence of higher BHBA concentrations on HSL phosphorylation in the LC group could be a possible explanation. On comparing RPAT to SCAT, HSL expression and the extent of Ser 660 and 563 phosphorylation was higher in RPAT at 21 d prepartum (HSL: 4.1 ± 0.5 vs. 11.1 ± 1.2; HSLp660 1.3 ± 0.2 vs. 2.9 ± 0.3; HSLp563: 0.6 ± 0.1 vs. 1.0 ± 0.1). In conclusion, the postpartum feeding regimen influenced the phosphorylation pattern, especially in RPAT, implying a regulatory role for different phosphorylation sites in adaptive lipolysis of dairy cows. It is suggested that RPAT is more sensitive to periparturient challenges than is SCAT.  相似文献

This study analyzed the efficacy of pegbovigrastim (Imrestor, Elanco Animal Health, Greenfield, IN) on some health and production parameters in lactating dairy cows. Primiparous and multiparous Holsteins from 17 Mexican dairy herds (n = 10,238) were included in this study, which was conducted in 2015. Treated cows (n = 5,025) received Imrestor approximately 7 d before expected calving and again within 24 h after calving; control cows (n = 5,213) did not receive a placebo. Clinical mastitis (MAS; 0 to 30 DIM), retained placenta (RP), and clinical metritis (MET; 0 to 21 DIM) occurrences were recorded, as well as the number of medication days, medical treatments needed, and the number of days that milk was discarded due to medication administered for disease. Milk yield was measured from calving until 120 d in milk. Imrestor reduced the incidence of MAS by 25%, and the odds ratio of having mastitis in the first 30 d in milk was 35% greater for control cows than for Imrestor cows. Imrestor treatment reduced the number of medical treatments required for MAS by 6%, and less milk was discarded due to medication for MAS as a result of the Imrestor treatment. The incidence of RP was reduced by 4.15% with Imrestor and the odds of cows having RP were 4.6% greater for control than Imrestor treatments, but they did not differ. The MET incidence was increased by 17.1% with Imrestor. The use of Imrestor around parturition increased by 5.8% the odds of inseminating cows during the first 100 d after calving. Imrestor-treated multiparous cows with MAS produced 2.1 kg/d more milk than control cows with MAS during the first 30 d of their lactation. Imrestor-treated multiparous cows with MET produced 2.3 kg/d more milk than MET control cows during the first 120 d of their lactation. We conclude that Imrestor can help the dairy cow cope with immune periparturient disorders and can increase the milk yield of dairy cows due to a healthier transition, despite a reported increase in the incidence of MET.  相似文献

The present study was designed to evaluate whether feeding supplemental energy would improve the metabolic profile and alleviate some of the immunosuppression typically noted during the periparturient period in dairy cows with Johne's disease. Twelve dairy cows naturally infected with Mycobacterium paratuberculosis were fitted with rumen cannulas in late gestation and assigned to treatment groups: control, n = 6; or stuffed, n = 6. Cows in the control group were allowed to consume feed ad libitum. Cows assigned to the stuffed treatment group were also fed ad libitum but received additional total mixed rations by manually stuffing their rumens with refused feed to maintain dry matter intake of 2% body weight per day before calving and 2.5% body weight per day after calving. Serum nonesterified fatty acid levels were significantly decreased in stuffed cows compared with control cows, indicating that stuffing to maintain dry matter intake improved the energy balance in the cows. In addition, periparturient serum calcium and magnesium concentrations were significantly higher in stuffed cows. Stuffing modulated cell-mediated immunity by reducing lymphocyte proliferative responses to T-cell mitogens during early lactation. Stuffing resulted in an increase in the secretion of in vitro immunoglobulin by peripheral blood mononuclear cells after parturition when compared to control cows. These data demonstrate that energy balance is improved by providing additional energy in this manner and suggest energy supplementation can improve some aspects of immune function during the periparturient period.  相似文献

Thirty-five multiparous Holstein cows were used to determine the role of mitochondrial carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (CPT I) in liver on peripartal adaptations of fatty acid metabolism. From dry-off to parturition, cows were fed a diet at either ad libitum (n = 17) or restricted intake (RI, 80% of calculated requirements for net energy; n = 18). After parturition, all cows were fed a lactation diet. At 4 d in milk (DIM), cows underwent a physical examination and were classified as healthy (n = 15) or having at least one periparturient disorder (PD; n = 17). Cows in the healthy group were assigned to either a control (n = 6) group or a ketosis induction (KI; n = 9) group. Cows with periparturient disorders were assigned to a third (PDC; n = 17) group. Cows in control and PDC groups were fed for ad libitum intake. Cows in KI were fed at 50% of their respective intake at d 4 postpartum starting from 5 DIM and continuing to signs of clinical ketosis or until 14 DIM; cows then were returned to ad libitum intake. Liver was biopsied at −30 d, 1 d, at signs of clinical ketosis or 14 d, and 28 d relative to parturition. Mitochondria were isolated by differential centrifugation. Activity of CPT I was 5.4 and 7.6 nmol of palmitoylcarnitine formed per min/mg of protein for ad libitum and RI, respectively, at −30 DIM. Sensitivity of CPT I to its inhibitor, malonyl CoA, did not differ between ad libitum and RI cows. Differences in CPT I activity between ad libitum and RI were no longer significant at 1 DIM. Postpartum CPT I activity and malonyl CoA sensitivity at 1 DIM, onset of clinical ketosis or 14 DIM, and 28 DIM were not affected by prepartum intake (ad libitum vs. RI), postpartum health status (healthy vs. PD), or ketosis induction status (control vs. KI vs. PDC). Activity of CPT I was positively correlated with liver total lipid, liver triglyceride, liver triglyceride to glycogen ratio, and serum nonesterified fatty acids. Activity of CPT I and dry matter intake were not correlated. Prepartum intake affected prepartum CPT I activity but not malonyl CoA sensitivity. Neither induction of primary ketosis nor periparturient disorders greatly affected CPT I activity or sensitivity, which indicates that alterations of CPT I may not be a major factor in the etiology of primary ketosis or other periparturient disorders.  相似文献

Twenty-four dairy cows were monitored during the transition period. We observed changes of oxidative status and relationships between oxidative and metabolic status. Body condition score (BCS) of the 24 animals at the beginning of the trial (30.4 ± 2 d before expected calving) was between 2.0 and 3.6. The BCS was recorded and blood samples were collected weekly during the last 30 d of pregnancy and the first 30 DIM. Plasma samples were analyzed to determine indices of oxidative status: reactive oxygen metabolites (ROM); thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS); thiol groups (SH); glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and indices of energy metabolism: glucose, β-hydroxybutyrate, and nonesterified fatty acids. In erythrocytes we determined indices of oxidative status: GSH-Px, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and intracellular SH. Before calving, cows showed an increase of plasma SH, SOD, and GSH-Px, a decrease of erythrocyte GSH-Px and plasma ROM, and no changes in erythrocyte SH. After calving, cows showed a decrease of plasma and erythrocyte SH and SOD, and an increase of ROM, TBARS, and plasma GSH-Px. Cows with higher BCS at the beginning of the trial and greater loss of BCS after calving, had higher plasma ROM, TBARS, and SH, and lower SOD and erythrocyte SH in the postpartum period. Oxidative status of dairy cows was related to energy status. Cows with higher BHBA and NEFA showed higher ROM and TBARS and lower levels of antioxidants. Results of the present study demonstrated that cows can experience oxidative stress during the peripartum period, and cows with higher BCS and greater BCS losses are more sensitive to oxidative stress.  相似文献

Fifty-two multiparous dairy cows were allocated to 4 treatments consuming 5.4, 8.2, 10.0, or 11.0 kg/d of pasture dry matter per cow for 27 +/- 9.6 d precalving. This equated to 1.3, 1.9, 2.4, and 2.6% of body weight (BW; not including the conceptus weight). Following calving, all cows were fed ad libitum on pasture. Blood was sampled 17 d precalving, on day of calving, and on d 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 14, 28, and 35 postcalving. Results suggest that the near-term grazing dairy cow requires 1.05 MJ of ME/kg of BW(0.75) and that previous estimates of energy requirements were underestimated. Precalving plasma concentrations of glucose, insulin-like growth factor-1, and leptin increased quadratically with increasing pasture intake. This was associated with precalving plasma concentrations of growth hormone that declined linearly, and concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids and beta-hydroxybutyrate that declined quadratically with increasing dry matter intake (DMI). Postcalving plasma concentrations of these metabolites showed no lasting effect of precalving feeding. The effect of precalving nutrition on milk production was small, and other than milk fat, was confined to wk 1 postcalving. Milk fat yield increased with increasing precalving DMI and calving body condition score until wk 3 post-calving, after which treatment effects were not evident. These results indicate that the level of feeding in grazing dairy cows during the last month before calving has only small effects on cow metabolic and hormonal status, and on milk production in the first 5 wk of lactation.  相似文献

Two Holstein cows were used to study the metabolism and excretion of phenobarbital in the lactating cow. Each cow received 6 g of sodium phenobarbital, intrarumenally, daily for 10 days. On the 10th day carbon 14 phenobarbital was mixed with the unlabeled material prior to dosing. Total milk, urine, and feces were collected for 6 days, and about 93% of the recovered radioactivity was in urine, 5% in milk, and 2% in feces. The biological half-lives of phenobarbital for milk, urine, and feces were 40.5, 29.5, and 46.5 h. From these values we calculated that 7 days after the last 6-g dose of phenobarbital the milk produced would contain less than .5 ppm of this compound.A second study determined how long after withdrawal from phenobarbital feeding the drug could be detected in milk. Three Holstein cows received 6 g of sodium phenobarbital, intrarumenally, daily for 10 days. Starting on the 11th day milk samples were collected at each milking and analyzed for phenobarbital by gas liquid chromatography and spectrophotometrically. After 7 days withdrawal, phenobarbital could not be detected in milk by either method.  相似文献

Effects of dietary energy density during late gestation and early lactation on metabolic status of periparturient cows were studied. Four weeks before expected calving, animals were fed a low (DL; 1.58 Mcal of NEL/kg) or high energy density diet (DH; 1.70 Mcal of NEL/kg). After calving, half of the cows from each prepartum treatment were assigned to a low (L; 1.57 Mcal of NEL/kg) or high energy density diet (H; 1.63 Mcal of NEL/kg) until d 20 postpartum. After d 20, all animals were fed H until d 70. Animals fed DH had a more positive energy balance during the prepartum period. Animals fed DH had higher plasma concentrations of glucose and insulin and lower concentrations of plasma nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA) on d −7 relative to calving compared with animals fed DL. No differences in blood concentrations of metabolites, insulin and liver triglycerides (TG) content were observed on d 1. Liver TG content at d 1 and 21 were more related to magnitude of change in energy intake prepartum than to energy intake in the last week of gestation. Cows fed H had higher concentrations of plasma glucose and insulin, but similar plasma NEFA during the postpartum period compared with cows fed L. Plasma concentrations of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) and liver TG content on d 21 were 46 and 30% lower, respectively, for cows fed H compared with cows fed L. Interactions between prepartum and postpartum treatments indicated that negative effects of delaying higher concentrate feeding until d 21 postpartum can be partially offset by increasing concentrate in the diet before calving. Cows fed L had a higher increase in white line hemorrhage scores between prepartum and 10 wk postpartum compared with cows fed H. Energy density of prepartum diets had a minor influence on metabolic status of cows postpartum. A more favorable metabolic profile occurs when increasing the concentrate content of the diet immediately postpartum compared with delaying the increase until d 21 postpartum.  相似文献

High-producing dairy cows experience negative energy balance in early lactation. Dry-cow feeding management will affect the performance and metabolic status of dairy cows in the following early lactation. The present study evaluates dry-cow feeding strategies for priming lipid metabolism in the dairy cow to overcome the metabolic challenges in the following early lactation. Five weeks before expected calving, 27 cows were assigned to 1 of 3 isonitrogenous and isoenergetic dietary treatments: a low-fat control diet (dry-control); a high saturated fat diet (dry-HSF); and a high linseed diet (dry-HUF). The cows were fed the same TMR lactation diet after calving. The treatments were evaluated by performance and metabolic parameters in blood and liver. The cows fed dry-HSF and dry-HUF had significantly greater plasma nonesterified fatty acid concentrations compared with dry-control, and the dry-HUF cows had the greatest C18:3 concentrations in plasma in the prepartum period. Further, the cows fed dry-HSF and dry-HUF diets had a tendency for the greatest capacity for incomplete β-oxidation of fatty acids in the liver in wk 3 prepartum. The plasma cholesterol concentration was greatest for cows fed dry-HSF in the prepartum period compared with those fed dry-control and dry-HUF. The cows fed dry-HSF had the lowest plasma nonesterified fatty acid and liver fat concentrations in early lactation compared with the cows fed dry-control and dry-HUF. Data in the literature and the present experiment indicate that supplementing dry cows with a saturated fatty acid source is a positive strategy for priming dairy cows for body fat mobilization in the following early lactation.  相似文献

The tensile strength of 576 pieces of white line horn collected over 6 mo from 14 dairy cows restricted to parity 1 or 2 was tested. None of the cows had ever been lame. Seven cows were randomly assigned to receive 20 mg/d biotin supplementation, and 7 were not supplemented. Hoof horn samples were taken from zones 2 and 3 (the more proximal and distal sites of the abaxial white line) of the medial and lateral claws of both hind feet on d 1 and on 5 further occasions over 6 mo. The samples were analyzed at 100% water saturation. Hoof slivers were notched to ensure that tensile strength was measured specifically across the white line region. The tensile stress at failure was measured in MPa and was adjusted for the cross-sectional area of the notch site. Data were analyzed in a multilevel model, which accounted for the repeated measures within cows. All other variables were entered as fixed effects. In the final model, there was considerable variation in strength over time. Tensile strength was significantly higher in medial compared with lateral claws, and zone 2 was significantly stronger than zone 3. Where the white line was visibly damaged the tensile strength was low. Biotin supplementation did not affect the tensile strength of the white line. Results of this study indicate that damage to the white line impairs its tensile strength and that in horn with no visible abnormality the white line is weaker in the lateral hind claw than the medial and in zone 3 compared with zone 2. The biomechanical strength was lowest at zone 3 of the lateral hind claw, which is the most common site of white line disease lameness in cattle.  相似文献

Using an activity monitoring system (AMS) equipped with an accelerometer, 2 experiments were conducted to test the hypotheses that (1) enhancing progesterone before inducing luteolysis or (2) exposing cows to estradiol cypionate (ECP) or testosterone propionate (TP) after luteolysis would increase occurrence and intensity of estrus. Our goal was to determine if more cows could be detected in estrus by an AMS compared with other estrus-detection aids. In experiment 1, cows (n = 154) were fitted with both an AMS collar and a pressure-sensitive, rump-mounted device (HeatWatch; HW) and assigned to 3 treatments: (1) no CL + progesterone insert (CIDR) for 5 d, (2) CL only, or (3) CL + 2 CIDR inserts for 5 d to achieve a range in concentrations of progesterone. Prostaglandin F was administered to all cows upon CIDR insert removal or its equivalent. Progesterone concentration up to 72 h posttreatment was greatest in CL + 2 CIDR, followed by CL only, and no CL + CIDR cows. Estrus occurred 14 to 28 h earlier in no CL + CIDR compared with CL-bearing cows. Estrus intensity was greater for CL + 2 CIDR than for CL-only cows. The AMS and HW detected 70 and 59% of cows defined to be in estrus, respectively. In experiment 2, cows (n = 203) were equipped with both an AMS and a friction-activated, rump-mounted patch (Estrotect patch) and assigned to receive 1 mg of ECP, 2 mg of TP, or control 24 h after PGF. Concentrations of estradiol 24 and 48 h after treatment were greater in ECP cows compared with controls. Estrus expression detected by AMS or patches in cows defined to be in estrus tended to be greater or was greater for ECP compared with controls, respectively. Compared with controls and in response to TP or ECP, estrus occurred 8 to 18 h earlier and was of greater intensity for ECP cows, respectively. The AMS and patches determined 73 and 76% of cows defined to be in estrus, respectively. Of cows exposed to the AMS, HW, or patches, 70, 61, and 75%, respectively, were detected in estrus and more than 93% of these subsequently ovulated. In contrast, of the residual cows not detected in estrus, 62 to 77% ovulated in the absence of detected estrus. Only ECP was successful in inducing more expression and intensity of estrus, and proportions of cows detected in estrus exceeded 80%. Given the large proportion of cows equipped with AMS collars ovulating in the absence of estrus, further research is warranted to determine if more pregnancies can be achieved by inseminating those cows not detected in estrus at an appropriate time when PGF is administered to induce luteolysis.  相似文献

Sixteen farmers, representing three major dairy counties in West Virginia, were interviewed to determine current dairy management practices. Herd health records were used to determine the incidence of metabolic and digestive disorders. All feedstuffs used on these farms were sampled for chemical analyses. The total number of cows on the 16 farms surveyed was 1870 with an average herd size of 117 and 6387 kg milk produced per cow per year. Fourteen of the 16 farmers used forage testing services, obtained professional advice on feeding and nutrition, and attempted to feed according to production. Eleven of sixteen farmers increased grain 2 weeks prior to calving and all gradually adjusted the intake of grain to cows recently freshened. Ration imbalance problems included both excesses and deficiencies of energy, protein, phosphorus, and calcium. Excess calcium, phosphorous, and crude protein were correlated (P less than .01, r2 = .74) with the incidence of fat cows. The incidence of metabolic disorders in these herds was low to average and the most prevalent management problem encountered was low butter fat.  相似文献

Dairy cows experience hypocalcemia at the onset of lactation; however, the contribution of bone metabolism to circulating Ca concentrations during the periparturient period is not well understood. Osteoprotegerin (OPG) protects against loss of skeletal mass by regulating osteoclastogenesis. We previously reported that the bone resorption increased around parturition in dairy cows from the perspective of bone markers in blood. The aim of this study was to explore osteoclastic bone resorption in periparturient dairy cows by measuring changes in serum OPG concentrations around calving. The OPG concentrations were evaluated in primiparous (n = 9) and multiparous (n = 9) cows at 21 d precalving and over 5 d after calving. Based on mixed model analyses, the multiparous cows had a higher serum OPG concentration than primiparous cows at precalving and exhibited a significant decline in serum OPG and Ca concentrations after calving. In contrast to multiparous cows, primiparous cows did not exhibit these changes. Therefore, we hypothesized that multiparous cows preserve their bone mineral content during late pregnancy and activate the osteoclastic bone resorption after calving. Based on our serum OPG data, we identified the different periparturient osteoclastic bone resorption patterns in healthy primiparous and multiparous dairy cows.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of feeding rumen-protected glutamate during the periparturient period (d ?21 ± 3 to d 21 ± 3 relative to calving) on apparent total-tract digestibility (ATTD), inflammation, metabolic responses, and production performance of dairy cows. Fifty-two multiparous Holstein cows were blocked by parity, body condition score, and expected calving date, and randomly assigned to one of the experimental diets with rumen-protected monosodium glutamate (RP-Glu; intestinally available Glu = 8.8%) or without RP-Glu (control) at d ?21 ± 3 relative to expected calving date. The RP-Glu was fed at 4% and 3% of dietary dry matter, before and after calving, respectively. Prepartum diets contained 17.1% and 16.5% crude protein, and 13.1% and 13.3% starch, and postpartum diets contained 18.8% and 18.3% crude protein, and 22.5% and 22.7% starch on a dry matter basis, respectively for RP-Glu and control treatments. A subset of 19 cows was used to measure ATTD. Cows fed the RP-Glu had greater ATTD of dry matter (70.6 vs. 69.1%), crude protein (75.1 vs. 72.6%), and ether extract (66.0 vs 61.2%) on d 5 ± 1 after calving. Cows fed the RP-Glu also had greater dry matter intake (15.7 vs. 13.7 kg/d) on d 1 after calving. Cows fed the RP-Glu had greater plasma concentrations of Glu (4.60 vs. 3.89 µmol/dL) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (44.2 vs. 30.1 mg/mL), lower serum concentrations of free fatty acids (670 vs. 981 μEq/L) and total bilirubin (0.22 vs. 0.34 mg/dL), and lower plasma 3-methylhistidine concentration (1.28 vs. 1.50 μmol/dL) on d 4 after calving. However, these treatment effects observed between d 1 and d 5 ± 1 immediately after calving did not continue until d 21 after calving. Concentrations of serum amyloid A, serum haptoglobin, and plasma lipopolysaccharide binding protein were not affected by the treatment. In addition, no differences were observed for serum β-hydroxybutyrate concentration and milk yield during the postpartum period between the 2 groups, and cows fed the RP-Glu had a decreased lactose yield. These findings suggest that feeding RP-Glu during the periparturient period can increase digestive capacity and feed intake, and decrease mobilization of body fat and protein immediately after calving without increasing milk production.  相似文献
