The composition of the territorial marking pheromones from mandibular glands of males of the beewolvesPhilanthus crabroniformis, P. barbatus, andP. pulcher have been determined. The structures of the components were elucidated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The major compound ofP. crabroniformis is isopropyl tetradecanoate, with somewhat lesser amounts of 2-tridecanone, 3-methyl-3-butenyl tetradecanoate, and 928 (Z)(E)-11-eicosen-1-ol. The major compounds ofP. barbatus are ethyl tetradecanoate and hexadecanal, which are present in approximately a 6040 ratio. These two compounds comprise over 95% of the neutral lipids. Also present in lesser amounts are ethyl dodecanoate, tetradecanal, hexadecan-1-ol, a x -octadecen-1-ol, and octadecan-1-ol. The major compounds ofP. pulcher are ethyl (Z)-7-hexadecenoate and geranylgeraniol acetate, which comprise nearly 90% of the neutral lipid fraction, with smaller amounts of tetradecanal, pentadecanal, and ethyl hexadecanoate; trace amounts of x hexadecenal, hexadecanal, and octadecanal are also present.  相似文献

The olfactory responses of red flour beetles,Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), to methyl and ethyl ester of C14–C18 fatty acid prepared from tallow were studied. Methyl octadecanoate and ethyl octadecanoate discouraged aggregation of beetle adults. Ethyl 9.12-octadecadienoate acted as a repellent. Methyl pentadecanoate and ethyl tetradecanoate induced copulation at the level of 5 × 102 and 2 × 103 g, respectively. The maximum response was observed at the level of 5 × 102 g of the same compounds, and these compounds appear to stimulate males only.  相似文献

The 42 compounds identified in the pale yellow preorbital secretions of the bontebok, Damaliscus dorcas dorcas, and the blesbok, D. d. phillipsi, include acetic acid, 2-methylbutanoic acid, (E)-2-methyl-2-butenoic acid, benzoic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, saturated and unsaturated long-chain carboxylic acids, 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, saturated and unsaturated, unbranched, long-chain alcohols and aldehydes, 2-heptanone, pentane, heptane, pepiritone, dimethylsulfone, isopropyl tetradecanoate, isopropyl hexadecanoate, hexadecyl acetate, -lactones, cholesterol, -tocopherol, and squalene. Some qualitative and quantitative differences were found between the secretions of males and females of both subspecies.  相似文献

The phylogenetically primitive rove beetleDeleaster dichrous (Grav.) (Oxytelinae) has been shown for the first time to possess two pairs of neighboring abdominal glands which are depleted simultaneously on molestation. The morphology of these glands is described. The defensive constituents of theDeleaster glands were elucidated directly from the mixtures by gas chromatographic-mass spectroscopic methods and microchemical reactions. The paired whitish glands secrete iridodial, which polymerizes on exposure to air to form an adhesive that probably deters small predatory arthropods. The red gland system ofD. dichrous contains the toxicp-toluquinone and a variety of isopropyl andsec-butyl esters. Artificial quinoid ester mixtures simulating the secretion ofD. dichrous showed only weak effects on mortality ofLucilia larvae in comparison with more effective secretions of phyiogenetically derived Oxytelinae. The secretion of the primitive genusDeleaster is characterized chemotaxonomically by , -unsaturated C12 acids and esters, which are postulated as precursors for the characteristic defensive compounds of the derived species, thus indicating a clear evolutionary trend at the micromolecular level.  相似文献

Solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography coupled with electroantennographic detection were used to identify volatiles from fruit of flowering dogwood, Cornus florida, as key attractants for Rhagoletis pomonella flies originating from dogwood fruit. A six-component blend containing ethyl acetate (54.9%), 3-methylbutan-1-ol (27.5%), isoamyl acetate (0.9%), dimethyl trisulfide (1.9%), 1-octen-3-ol (9.1%), and -caryophyllene (5.8%) was identified from flowering dogwood fruit that gave consistent EAD activity. In a flight tunnel assay there was no significant difference in the response of individual dogwood flies exhibiting upwind anemotactic flight to volatile extracts from dogwood fruit and the six-component synthetic mixture. Dogwood flies also displayed significantly greater levels of upwind flight to sources with the dogwood volatile blend than with previously identified volatile blends from domestic apple or hawthorn fruit. Selected subtraction assays showed that the three-component mixture of 3-methylbutan-1-ol, 1-octen-3-ol, and -caryophyllene elicited levels of upwind flight to the source equivalent to the six-component mixture. Our study adds to previous ones showing that populations of Rhagoletis pomonella flies infesting apple, hawthorn, and flowering dogwood fruit are attracted to unique mixtures of fruit volatiles, supporting the hypothesis that host fruit odors could be key traits in sympatric host shifts and establishing host fidelity within members of the Rhagoletis pomonella species complex.  相似文献

Chromatographic and mass spectrometry studies of heptane extracts of the ovipositors of the iris borer,Macronoctua onusta, showed that the females produce several compounds that are the same as those produced by females of the tobacco budworm,Heliothis virescens. In trapping experiments, a mixture of (Z)-11-hexadecenal, (Z)-11-hexadecen-1-ol, and (Z)-9-tetradecenal (9442) proved to be the minimum set of compounds required to cause effective capture of iris borer males in the field.  相似文献

We recorded electroantennograms of male and female Lygocoris pabulinus antennae to 63 insect and plant volatiles. EAGs were between 100 and 500 V. Overall, male EAGs were about twice the size of female EAGs. In both sexes, largest EAGs were recorded to (E)-2-hexenyl butanoate and (E)-2-hexen-1-ol. Response profiles were similar in both sexes. However, male antennae were more sensitive to a number of esters, especially the butanoates and pentanoates. Female antennae were more sensitive to nine of the 19 plant volatiles, i.e., to hexan-1-ol, heptan-1-ol, 1-octen-3-ol, 2-heptanone, (R)-carvone, linalool, geraniol, nerol, and methyl salicylate. Sexual differences in responses suggest that males are more sensitive to insect-produced pheromone-type compounds, whereas females are more sensitive to plant compounds for their orientation towards oviposition sites.  相似文献

Analysis of ovipositor washings of femaleMaliarpha separatella from Sierra Leone by high-resolution gas chromatography (GC) linked to a male electroantennograph (EAG) indicated the presence of three electrophysiologically active compounds. The GC retention times of these compounds were consistent with those of (Z)-9-tetradecen-1-ol, (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadien-1-ol, and (E,E)-10,12-tetradecadien-1-ol. Analysis by El and CI mass spectrometry of ovipositor washings confirmed these identifications and also indicated the presence of the saturated analog, tetradecan-1-ol. There was no evidence, from these analyses, of the corresponding aldehydes or acetates. The EAG-active compounds were present in the ovipositor washings in a ratio of approximately 23.51, with the major component constituting approximately 0.4 ng per ovipositor. GC-MS analysis of entrained female effluvia confirmed that the EAG-active compounds were released by virgin females. Field testing of the EAG-active compounds indicated that (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadien-1-ol and (E,E)10,12-tetradecadien-1-ol were attractive to male moths in ratios of between 9:1 and 39:1, while (Z)-9-tetradecen-1-ol was found to reduce trap catch when added to blends of the other two compounds.  相似文献

The defense secretions of advanced nasutoid rhinotermitine soldiers from the New World contain enolic -ketoaldehydes as the major components. The secretions of minor soldiers ofRhinotermes hispidus (Emerson) andR. marginalis (Emerson) consist primarily of 3-keto-13-tetradecenal and 3-ketotetradecanal, but possess in addition C13, C14, C15, and C17 saturated and unsaturated ketones. Major soldiers lacked these compounds and in fact had virtually no frontal gland secretion. The defense secretion of the monomorphic soldiers ofAcorhinotermes subfusciceps (Emerson) contains mostly 3-keto-(Z)-9-hexadecenal and (Z)-8-pentadecen-2-one. Biosynthetic origins and interrelationships are postulated for these compounds, and the concomitant evolution of chemical weaponry and the modified labral brush is discussed.Fellow of the Alfred P. Two compounds identified as components of the sex pheromone system ofRhyacionia frustrana are (E)-9-dodecen-1-yl acetate (I) and (E)-9,11-dodecadien-1-yl acetate (II), which were found in female gland extracts in the ratio of 964, respectively. The identifications were based on chemical and instrumental analyses, electroantennogram studies, and field trapping tests. The optimum ratio for trapping maleR. frustrana is the range of 955 to 97.52.5 (III), when dispensed from rubber septa at a loading of ca. 1000/g/lure. (E)-10-Dodecen-1-yl acetate (E10–12Ac) and (E,E)-8,10-dodecadien-1-ylacetate (E,E8,10–12Ac) are sex attractants for males of the pea moth,Cydia nigricana (F.). Thirty-two structurally related compounds with chain lengths of 9–14 carbon atoms were exposed withE10–12Ac orE,E8,10–12Ac in traps in the field to investigate their influence on the activity of the attractants. Only alchols and acetates unsaturated at C-8, -9, or -10 greatly influenced moth captures. (Z) and (E)-8-dodecen-1-ol were weak synergists forE10–12Ac but no synergists forE,E8,10–12Ac were found. (Z) and (E)-8-dodecen-1-yl acetate and (E,E)-8,10-dodecadien-1-ol inhibited bothE10–12Ac andE,E8,10–12Ac while (E)-10-dodecen-1-ol, 10-dodecyn-1-ol, (Z) and (E)-9-dodecen-1-yl acetate, (Z)-10-dodecen-1-yl acetate, and undecyl acetate inhibited only the former attractant.  相似文献

Mixtures of (Z)-9-alkenes (C21-C33),n-alkanes (C21-C33), and mono- and dimethylalkanes (C27, C29), as components of the cuticular lipids washed from the female housefly (Musca domestica L.), were synthesized and assayed for their biological activity on male houseflies. The (Z)-9-alkenes and their hydrogenatedn-alkanes were synthesized from jojoba wax components by the appropriate chain elongation. The methylalkanes were prepared by Grignard coupling reaction of the appropriate alkyl halides, catalyzed by Li2CuCl4. Six- to 7-day-old virgin male houseflies exhibited the highest mating strike activity toward 6- to 7-day-old virgin females. The mating strike activity of the synthetic hydrocarbons was studied by exposing 6- to 7-day old virgin males to petrol-ether-rinsed 1 to 2-day-old dead females treated with these chemicals. (Z)-9-Tricosene was the most active hydrocarbon tested when it was applied in amounts of 10 g to a washed dead female. Amounts of 5 g of (Z)-9-tricosene did not cause sexual activity in the males. Mixture of (Z)-9-alkenes showed low activity when applied at 10-g amounts. However, when mixtures were made of 5 g of (Z)-9-tricosene with 5 fig of each of certain mixtures of (Z)-9-alkenes, the striking activity became as high as that of 10 g of (Z)-9-tricosene. This might be a synergism effect. The mixtures ofn-alkanes, as well as the mono- and dimethylalkanes, showed moderate activity. When (Z)-9-tricosene was added to these materials no increase in male activity was observed.  相似文献

In addition to the nine compounds identified in the interdigital secretion of the bontebok, Damaliscus dorcas dorcas, in a previous study, 76 compounds belonging to different compound types, were identified in the interdigital secretions of the bontebok and the blesbok, D. d. phillipsi. These compounds include alkanes, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, fatty acids, terpenoids, -lactones, an isopropyl ester, long-chain hydroxyesters, 2-substituted pyridines, phenols, steroids, and dimethylsulfone. No qualitative differences were found between secretions from the two sexes or from animals from different habitats. Although no attempt was made to correlate territorial behavior or other behavioral phenomena with the qualitative composition of interdigital secretions from individual animals, available information seems to indicate that quantitative differences probably do not have a major semiochemical function. Only two species of bacteria, Bacillus brevis and Planococcus citreus, were found in the interdigital pouches of male and female members of the two subspecies, regardless of the habitat of the animals. B. brevis synthesized, among other unidentified constituents, (Z)-3-penten-2-ol, 2-hexanone, 2-octanone, 2-nonanone, tetradecanoic acid, pentadecanoic acid, heptadecanoic acid, octadecanoic acid, (Z)-9-hexadecenoic acid, and isopropyl hexadecanoate in vitro, while P. citreus produced, among others, the -lactones dodecan-4-olide and (Z)-6-dodecen-4-olide, which is one of the major constituents of the interdigital secretions of both subspecies. Some components of the interdigital secretions are not present in the interdigital glandular tissue, and the possibility is discused that these compounds could be produced by microbiological activity in the interdigital pouch.  相似文献

The host range of the eucalyptus woodborer, Phoracantha semipunctata, is restricted mainly to species of Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae). Volatile semiochemicals possibly involved in host selection and nonhost rejection were identified by high-resolution gas chromatography–electroantennography on samples obtained by air entrainment of foliage from host and nonhost trees. Compounds from the main host E. globulus, active at physiologically significant levels, included 3-hydroxy-2-butanone, 3-methyl1-butanol, a branched epoxyalkane, ethyl 3-methylbutanoate, (Z)-3-hexen1-ol, -pinene, -pinene, p-cymene, 1,8-cineole, limonene, and guaiene. E. camaldulensis gave a similar spectrum of volatiles that also included -terpinene and linalool. The volatiles from E. tereticornis were similar to E. globulus but without ethyl 3-methylbutanoate, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, 1,8-cineole, or limonene. The nonhost Pinus pinaster (Pinaceae) yielded active compounds common to the host species, including ethyl 3-methylbutanoate, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, -pinene, -pinene, p-cymene, 1,8-cineole, limonene, and linalool but, in addition, myrcene, (E)--ocimene, and -cubebene as candidate nonhost cues. The nonhost Olea europeae (Oleaceae) also shared some active compounds in common with the host species, including 3-hydroxy-2-butanone, 3-methyl-1-butanol, the branched epoxyalkane, ethyl 3-methylbutanoate, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, -pinene, but an apparent nonhost cue from this species was the homomonoterpene (E)-4,8-dimethylnona-1,3,7triene, plus other compounds so far unidentified.  相似文献

Cyperus brevifolius andC. kyllingia are two common weeds in Hawaii. The underground parts, including the rhizomes and roots, contain allelopathic essential oils, which may contribute to the aggressive spread of these weeds in grasslands and lawns. Although morphologically similar,C. kyllingia contains more essential oils thanC. brevifolius. Also, the former is rich in terpenes, including -cyperone, -selinene, and -humulene, while the latter is rich in C17 to C25 n-paraffins. Male potato tuberworm moths are attracted by a mixture oftrans-4,cis-7-tridecadien-1-ol acetate andtrans-4,cis-7,cis-10-tridecatrien-1-ol acetate. The synthesis of both compounds is described. Overall yields were 14.4 and 9.5% after distillation. The products were purified by liquid chromatography. Mixtures of these compounds in several ratios and quantities were tested in potato fields in Australia, Peru, and Cyprus. The largest catches were obtained from water pan traps baited with rubber sleeve stoppers containing both components in ratios varying between 19 and 91. The stoppers were attractive over a period of several months even under hot weather conditions.  相似文献

The female sex pheromone of the sugar cane borer,Chilo sacchariphagus, has been shown to contain the two structurally related compounds, (Z)-13-octadecenyl acetate (I) and (Z)-13-octadecen-1-ol (II). These components were detected in female abdominal tip extracts by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) combined with electroantennography (EAG), and were identified by their GLC behavior, microozonolysis, and interconversion, and by comparison of natural and synthetic material. Field tests in Mauritius showed that traps baited with components I and II combined in ratios from 11 to 91 caught maleC. sacchariphagus moths, and that the 71 ratio was comparable in performance with a virgin female moth. Neither component presented separately in traps caught significant numbers of moths.  相似文献

Females ofMyelois cribrella contain about 20 ng/gland of the primary sex pheromone components (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate, (9Z,12E)-9,12-tetradecadienyl acetate, and (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate in proportions of 4115, respectively. These physiologically active components are accompanied by a number of related compounds such as (Z)-9-tetradecen-1-ol, hexadecyl acetate, (9Z,12E)-9,12-tetradecadien-1-ol, (Z)-11-hexadecen-1-ol, octadecyl acetate, octadecan-1-ol, and eicosyl and docosyl acetates. Octadecyl acetate, the most abundant component, represents about 42 ng/female moth; however, no physiological activity could be attributed to it. In field tests, a trap baited with a 1-mg mixture of (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate, (9Z,12E)-9,12-tetradecadienyl acetate, and (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate in a ratio of 121 caught more male moths than three live female moths.Pheromones, 58. Volatiles released from fruiting bodies of the polypores Fomitopsis pinicola and Fomes fomentarius (Polyporaceae) were collected by entrainment and SPME techniques and analyzed by GC-MS. The most significant difference between the two species was found in the terpene fraction. F. fomentarius emitted a more complex blend, with more than 10 sesquiterpenes. During the sporulating phase, the release of (R)- and (S)-oct-1-en-3-ol, octan-3-one, and some sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (mainly -barbatene) increased in F. pinicola, whereas in F. fomentarius the release of octan-3-one, cis-furanoid linalool oxide, -phellandrene, -myrcene, and several sesquiterpene hydrocarbons increased. -Barbatene was identified for the first time in fungi. Chopping of the fruiting bodies altered the odor composition more in F. fomentarius than in F. pinicola. Five volatiles giving a typical fungal odor (rac-oct-1-en-3-ol, nonan-1-ol, rac-octan-3-ol, octan-1-ol, and octan-3-one) were tested for insect attraction in the field. Females of the three wood-living generalist beetles Malthodes fuscus, Anaspis marginicollis, and A. rufilabris and both sexes of the moth Epinotia tedella were attracted to rac-oct-1-en-3-ol. The generalist predator on fungus-insects Lordithon lunulatus was attracted to rac-oct-1-en-3-ol and octan-3-one in combination. Previous results regarding the host-specific attraction of beetles to the odors emanating from chopped fruiting bodies of F. pinicola and F. fomentarius are discussed in the light of this investigation.  相似文献

When feeding on rolled oats, male square-necked grain beetles,Cathartus quadricollis (Guér.), produced the aggregation pheromone (3R,6E)-7-methyl-6-nonen-3-yl acetate, for which the trival name quadrilure is proposed. The pheromone was highly attractive to both sexes in a two-choice, pitfall olfactometer modified to retain responding beetles by placing a food stimulus (an oat flake) in the glass vials containing the experimental and control stimuli. TheS enantiomer of the pheromone was inactive. Males also produced small amounts of (E)-7-methyl-6-nonen-3-one, (E)-7-methyl-6-nonen-3-ol, and (6E)-7-methyl-3-propyl-2,6-nonadienyl acetate, but these compounds were inactive in the laboratory bioassay.
