Information technology at the National Computing Centre

An outline is given of the information services used in the National Computing Centre. An update is provided of a previous paper describing the local area network implemented in 1981. Three IT landmarks are highlighted, these include the introduction of word processing, the local area network and a digital PABX. The implications and subsequent developments are described. The facilities available on the local area network are discussed. The use of three electronic mail services are also considered, along with the use of facsimile.     

Local networking at the Royal Bank of Scotland

Data communications facilities are vital if essential banking operations are to be computerized; branches and head offices that are dependent upon terminals and corporate data to fulfil their functions must have access to such facilities. Back-up facilities are also essential if normal bank functions are not to be disrupted should a fault develop. Investigations that led to the installation of Hyperchannel at the Royal Bank of Scotland are described and the problems to which Hyperchannel provided the solutions are examined. The implementation of the system and plans for future development are discussed.     

Computer networking capacity in robotic neural systems

This paper illustrates the mathematical and philosophical link between capacity measures developed in the mathematical theory of capacity, computer networking and robotic neural systems. The work of classical authors is founded upon concepts associated with physical circuit capacitors and Fourier series singularity points, and is developed through mathematical works originating with Gauss and Wiener. Three such mathematical measures of capacity are used here as a theoretical base: Newtonian capacity, Hausdorff measure capacity and analytic capacity. The linking of circuit and computer networking capacity measures, which equates to the capacity of robotic neural systems, is discussed by this means in two contexts, one in terms of the frequency of action potentials, and the other in terms of the frequency of bursts of action potentials in neural circuits. An all-or-none path model is also illustrated to indicate the position of coding in the robotic neural system.

Integrated office systems over LANs — a performance study

In this paper, an integrated office system environment is modelled and studied. Composed of multi-media workstations, printer servers, database servers, electronic mail servers etc., the office information system (OIS) is interconnected by a LAN. The performance of three selected networks namely Appletalk, Starlan and Ethernet, in handling the typical office system applications, is evaluated. The study applies discrete-event computer simulation, using the QNAP2 simulation software. Results comparing the performance and utilization of the three networks are presented and some useful conclusions obtained.

Distributed systems and their protocols

Several models have been developed to assist with the design and understanding of distributed systems. The client-server model is used here to develop a set of requirements to be met by protocol sets used within a distributed system. An architecture within which protocols may be implemented to meet the requirements developed is proposed. A number of key requirements are reviewed and areas requiring further development identified.

Transparent LANs and LANs as OSI subnetworks

The characteristics of two classes of local area network — transparent LANs and LANs as OSI subnetworks — are discussed. The integration of LANs into existing communications systems is also considered.     

Banet — a local area network for distributed data processing

A broadcast architecture network (Banet) suitable for distributed data processing is proposed. One feature of Banet is that the broadcast-within-a-group function is supported not only by the datalink level but by the transport or session-level network structure. The commitment control scheme is included in the network protocol. Design goals, physical structure and protocols are discussed.     

A datagram-based network architecture for microcomputers

Current developments in protocol standards for local area networks are not suitable for small microcomputers with limited storage and processing capability. A suitable distributed systems architecture that is based on datagrams is presented. Compatibility with the ISO/CCITT seven-layer OSI model is maintained where possible, and internetworking is supported.

Computer networking for the robotic neural and sensory systems

At the present time, robotic systems are composed mainly of mechanical functions connected for the purpose of achieving a specific form of automation. An overall plan for the robotic system computer architecture is described to investigate optimal, efficient and cost effective mimicking of human nervous system functions in the robotic system. The following component analogies are drawn between the computer network and the human nervous system: computer node to soma (cell body), input communication channels (links) to dendrites, output communication channels to axons and communications processor ports to buttons. The robotic nervous system therefore is structured as a larger internetwork (similar to the DARPA internetwork) of gateway nodes (controlling neuron cell bodies) which connect neuron intranetworks together. As in the human body, the robotic nervous system is the controlling system for visual and sensory functions.     

Microcomputers and distributed systems

The combination of local area networks and microcomputers has led to increased interest in distributed systems architecture. The advent of wide area networks has brought about many studies into distributed databases, large computers and distributed resources. The paper discusses the evolution of distributed systems, the driving forces at work in the market and the consequences of advances in the technology. It then describes the experience of and the design approach taken by a manufacturer of distributed systems. Desirable features of a ‘full capability’ network are also presented.
