The torsional monotonic structural material properties of equine metacarpi with or without, either a 5/16 inch or 3/8 inch diameter bicortical lateromedial middiaphyseal hole were assessed to determine the effect of a hole on metacarpal strength. Torsional stiffness was not significantly effected by the presence of a bicortical hole, whereas yield and failure angles, torques and energies of metacarpi with a hole were 51% to 97% of those of intact bones. Significant differences were not apparent for yield and failure mechanical properties between metacarpi with a 5/16 inch diameter hole and metacarpi with a 3/8 inch diameter hole; however, postyield mechanical properties were lower for metacarpi with a 3/8 inch hole. Whereas some metacarpi with a 5/16 inch hole were capable of plastic deformation before failure, metacarpi with a 3/8 inch diameter hole appeared to have sufficient stress concentration to propagate complete fracture on structural yield.  相似文献

Diet and exercise are two management factors that affect bone density and strength. We proposed that bone density and calcium status would be affected by deconditioning for 12 wk and by dietary Ca concentration. Eleven highly conditioned Arabian horses were taken out of training and placed in stalls for 12 wk. Horses were walked on a mechanical walker in two 30-min sessions, 7 d/wk. Diets were designated CC (.36% Ca) and HC (.62% Ca). Data were collected every 21 d. Serum or plasma were analyzed for total and ionized Ca, parathyroid hormone, osteocalcin, hydroxyproline, electrolytes, and blood gases. Bone mineral content (BMC) of the left third metacarpal bone was estimated by radiographic photometry using an aluminum step wedge, which was exposed in each radiograph, as a reference standard for an image analysis system. During deconditioning, BMC decreased by approximately 1.1 g/2 cm, or .45% per week. This decrease was unaffected by dietary Ca. Serum Ca concentration increased with deconditioning. The results suggest that dietary Ca at twice the currently recommended level did not prevent the loss of BMC in response to deconditioning. Loss of BMC during 12 wk of stall confinement may weaken bones, increasing the risk of skeletal injuries when training is resumed.  相似文献

Navicular bones collected from the four limbs of 95 sound horses were studied. The anatomic bases have been laid down about morphometry of the navicular bones and their variations according to limbs, after corrections have been made for morphologic type, gender, weight, size and age. All the dimensions of the navicular bone (except for the thickness) were larger in the fore limb. This phenomenon probably reflects an attempt to compensate for the greater forces exerted upon the fore limbs during exercise and at rest. Navicular bones collected from the four limbs of 61 sound horses were studied and the anatomic bases were described for histomorphometry of the fore and rear navicular bones. Fore navicular bones possess less cortical bone at the level of the articular surface, as well as at the level of the flexor surface and proximal border, but larger amounts of cancellous bone. Articular and flexor surface cortical bone show a larger porosity in the fore navicular bones and a larger amount of mineralized cartilage. The mineralized portion for distal impar- and collateral sesamoidean ligaments are also larger for the fore navicular bones. Two distinct zones are observed for the flexor surface cortex that have never been reported in the literature before: an external zone, which is mainly composed of poorly remodelled lamellar bone, arranged in a disto-proximal oblique direction, and an internal zone, which is mainly composed of secondary bone, with a latero-medial direction of Haversian canals. Bone architecture is discussed with regard to the mechanic load, encountered by the bone during locomotion.  相似文献

The Bauschinger behavior after a strain reversal was evaluated for samples with microstructures representative of production sheets for a low-carbon (LC) steel, a high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel, and a dual-phase (DP) steel. The microstructures were produced in the samples by laboratory hot rolling and heat treatment. Bauschinger tests were run at strain rates of 0.0001, 0.001, and 0.01 s−1, with tensile prestrains between 1 and 7 pct. After the reversal, the samples were strained 2 pct in compression. The Bauschinger effect is described by a Bauschinger effect parameter (BE), which is the difference between the steel strength at reversal and the 0.05 pct offset yield strength on the reversal, normalized by the steel strength at reversal. It is found that the Bauschinger effect is a continuous increasing function of the strength of the steel, provided the steel is prestrained at least 2.5 pct or beyond the yield point elongation. A single trend line describes the Bauschinger effect variation with steel strength, for all three steels in the present study and for an aluminum-killed drawing quality (AKDQ) steel from a previous investigation. No strain rate influence on the BE was found, due to the limited strain rate range and data uncertainty.  相似文献

In the present multi-center study, non-submerged ITI implants were prospectively followed to evaluate their long-term prognosis in fully and partially edentulous patients. In a total of 1003 patients, 2359 implants were consecutively inserted. Following a healing period of 3-6 months, the successfully integrated implants were restored with 393 removable and 758 fixed restorations. Subsequently, all consecutive implants were documented annually up to 8 years. At each examination, the clinical status of all implants was evaluated according to predefined criteria of success. Therefore, the data base allowed the evaluation of 8-year cumulative survival and success rates for 2359 implants. In addition, cumulative success rates were calculated for implant subgroups divided per implant type, implant length, and implant location. Furthermore, the actual 5-year survival and success rates could be determined for 488 implants. During the healing period, 13 implants did not successfully integrate, whereas 2346 implants fulfilled the predefined criteria of success. This corresponds with an early failure rate of 0.55%. During follow-up, 19 implants were classified as failures due to several reasons. In addition, 17 implants (approximately 0.8%) demonstrated at the last annual examination a suppurative periimplant infection. Including 127 drop out implants (= 5.4% drop out rate) into the calculation, the 8-year cumulative survival and success rates resulted in 96.7% and 93.3%, respectively. The analysis of implant subgroups showed slightly more favorable cumulative success rates for screw type implants (> 95%) compared to hollow-cylinder implants (91.3%), and clearly better success rates for mandibular implants (approximately 95%) when compared to maxillary implants (approximately 87%). The actual 5-year survival and success rates of 488 implants with 98.2% and 97.3%, respectively, were slightly better than the estimated 5-year cumulative survival and success rates of 2359 implants indicating that the applied life table analysis is a reliable statistical method to evaluate the long-term prognosis of dental implants. It can be concluded that non-submerged ITI implants maintain success rates well above 90% in different clinical centers for observation periods up to 8 years.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To localize and determine relative frequency of occurrence of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and substance P (SP) fibers in the proximal sesamoid bones (PSB) and adjacent structures in sound horses. SAMPLE POPULATION: 4 foals and 3 adult horses. PROCEDURE: Medial PSB and adjacent ligaments of both forelimbs were collected, flushed, and fixed in buffered 4% formalin. The left PSB were cut into 5 longitudinal, sagittally oriented slabs, and the right PSB were cut into 5 transverse slabs. After decalcification in EDTA, slices were transferred to a 30% sucrose solution, deep frozen, sectioned (80 microm), and stored in Tris-buffered saline solution for free-floating immunocytochemical processing, staining of which was performed by use of the peroxidase-antiperoxidase method with polyclonal rabbit antibodies against CGRP and SP. Sections were examined by light microscopy. RESULTS: Calcitonin gene-related peptide and SP fibers were present throughout the PSB; in ligaments, they were concentrated at the attachment sites. Presentation of the fibers, the innervation pattern, and intensity in the bones of horses differed from that in foals, in which the fibers were more delicate and frequency of occurrence was lower. In horses, innervation with CGRP and SP fibers was more dense in the periphery of the bone, whereas in foals, local difference in innervation of the bone was not evident. With the exception of the intersesamoidean ligament, ligaments were more richly innervated than was bone. CONCLUSION: Presence of the nociceptive peptides CGRP and SP indicated that the PSB and, more practically, the adjacent ligaments are sensitive structures.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether irradiation with a low-intensity diode laser, which produces radiation at a wavelength of 810 nm, will induce nonthermal enhancement of chondrocyte metabolism. SAMPLE POPULATION: 144 grossly normal articular cartilage explants aseptically harvested from the femoral condyles of 6 adult horses. PROCEDURE: Treated cartilage explants were irradiated with a diode laser at 1 of 7 fluence levels that ranged from 8 to 1,600 J/cm2. Explants were incubated for 24 or 72 hours, labeled for 24 hours with [35S]Na2SO4, and assayed for newly synthesized sulfated glycosaminoglycan (GAG; measured incorporation of 35SO4) and endogenous GAG, chondroitin 6-sulfate (CS), and keratan sulfate (KS) content, using a dimethylmethylene blue assay. Laser-induced temperature changes were measured during irradiation with a diode laser and a neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser, which produces radiation at a wavelength of 1,064 nm, using conditions that were reported in previous studies to increase explant metabolism. RESULTS: After incubation for 24 or 72 hours, rate of 33SO4 uptake or endogenous GAG, CS, or KS content in irradiated explants was not significantly different than in nonirradiated explants. Cartilage temperature increased < 4.75 C during diode laser application. Cartilage temperature increased 5 to 12 C during Nd:YAG laser application. CONCLUSIONS: Minimal thermal increases in cartilage explants with use of a low-intensity diode laser resulted in no change in proteoglycan metabolism of chondrocytes. An increase in tissue temperature over a narrow range with use of a Nd:YAG laser may have contributed to the metabolic alteration of chondrocytes reported in previous studies.  相似文献

Stress/strain tests were carried out in compression on three liquid phase sintered tungsten alloys, with tungsten contents of 90, 95, and 97.4 wt pct, in the strain rate range 10−3 s−1 to 103 s−1. Each alloy shows a gradual increase of flow stress with strain rate, and evidence of work softening is observed when the strain rate is of the order of 2 s−1 or greater. The work softening effect is shown to result from a temperature rise due to the plastic deformation and partly masks the strain rate effect at strains greater than 0.1. The 97.4 pct tungsten alloy also shows variable behavior due to cracking associated with the presence of a brittle phase at the tungsten particle/matrix interface.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To examine macro- and microscopic characteristics of cartilage of the distal phalanx (ungual cartilage [UC]) and digital cushion in the equine foot and to relate them to the foot's function of energy dissipation. ANIMALS: 85 horses and 5 foals of various breeds and ages. PROCEDURE: Feet, obtained at necropsy, were perfused with India ink (n = 30), latex (5), or polymer plastic (10). Select feet were examined histologically for tissue architecture and to identify elastic fibers. Immunochemistry to identify substance P peptides in nerves (feet from foals) and gold chloride impregnation of axons (n = 10) were performed. Feet were sectioned transversely (n = 27) or coronally (62 feet in a matched-paired study). Ungual cartilage was measured at the navicular bone. Digital cushions were examined for relative tissue composition between forefeet and hind feet. RESULTS: Ungual cartilage formed an axial projection that extended towards the midline to overlie the bars, and dorsally along the semilunar line of the distal phalanx. Ungual cartilage of forefeet was significantly larger than that of hind feet. The digital cushion was composed of fat and elastic tissues in feet with thin UC, or fibrous and fibrocartilaginous tissue and elastic tissue in feet with thicker UC. Sensory nerves and an extensive network of venovenous anastomoses were found in the UC. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Ungual cartilage and the digital cushion provide the basis for a hemodynamic flow hypothesis of energy dissipation. Maximum energy dissipation depends on proper hoof preparation and shoeing.  相似文献

The initial interaction between a titanium implant and the surrounding cancellous bone tissue was investigated by means of in vitro cultures of bone marrow-derived osteoblastic clone TMS-12 cells. Proliferation of TMS-12 cells cultured on a titanium surface was significantly reduced compared with that of control cells cultured directly on plastic, but alkaline phosphatase activity was the same as control cells. Co-culture of spleen cells with TMS-12 cells in the presence of a 1 alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 on titanium resulted in significant inhibition of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase activity compared to control cultures on plastic. More prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) was produced by cells grown on a titanium surface than on plastic tissue-culture plates. On the other hand, mouse calvaria-derived osteogenic MC3T3-E1 cells, known to proliferate well on titanium, released similar amounts of PGE2 on titanium surfaces as on plastic tissue culture plates, indicating additional marked differences between the two osteoblastic cell types in response to a titanium surface. These results suggest that the reaction of bone marrow-derived osteoblastic cells to a titanium surface may fundamentally differ from that of calvaria-derived osteoblastics even though both cells are from bone tissue.  相似文献

1. The electrophysiological properties of inspiratory neurons were studied in a rhythmically active thick-slice preparation of the newborn mouse brain stem maintained in vitro. Whole cell patch recordings were performed from 60 inspiratory neurons within the rostral ventrolateral part of the slice with the aim of extending the classification of inspiratory neurons to include analysis of active membrane properties. 2. The slice generated a regular rhythmic motor output recorded as burst of action potentials on a XII nerve root with a peak to peak time of 11.5 +/- 3.4 s and a duration of 483 +/- 54 ms (means +/- SD, n = 50). Based on the electroresponsive properties and membrane potential trajectories throughout the respiratory cycle, three types of inspiratory neurons could be distinguished. 3. Type-1 neurons were spiking in the interval between the inspiratory potentials (n = 9) or silent with a resting membrane potential of -48.6 +/- 10.1 mV and an input resistance of 306 +/- 130 M omega (n = 15). The spike activity between the inspiratory potentials was burst-like with spikes riding on top of an underlying depolarization (n = 11) or regular with no evidence of bursting (n = 12). Hyperpolarization of the neurons below threshold for spike initiation did not reveal any underlying phasic synaptic activity, that could explain the bursting behavior. 4. Type-1 neurons showed delayed excitation after hyperpolarizing square current pulses or when the neurons were depolarized from a hyperpolarized level. This membrane behavior resembles the response seen in other CNS neurons expressing an IA. The response to 1-s long depolarizing pulses with a large current strength showed signs of activation of an active depolarizing membrane response leading to a transient reduction in the spike amplitude. The relationship between the membrane potential and the amplitude of square current pulses (Vm-I) showed a small upward rectification below -70 mV, and spike adaptation throughout a 1-s pulse had a largely linear time course. 5. Type-1 neurons depolarized and started to fire spikes 398 +/- 102 ms (n = 20) before the upstroke of the integrated XII nerve discharge. The inspiratory potential was followed by fast hyperpolarization, a short fast-repolarizing phase (1,040 +/- 102 ms, n = 5) and a longer slow-repolarizing phase (lasting until the next inspiratory discharge). 6. Type-2 neurons were spiking in the interval between the inspiratory potentials with no evidence of bursting behavior and had an input resistance of 296 +/- 212 M omega (n = 26). The response to hyperpolarizing pulses revealed an initial sag and postinhibitory rebound depolarization. This membrane behavior resembles the response seen in other CNS neurons expressing an Ih. The Vm-I relationship was linear at depolarized potentials and showed a marked upward rectification below -60 mV. Spike trains elicited by 1-s long pulses showed a pronounced early and late adaptation. 7. Type-2 neurons depolarized and started to fire spikes 171 +/- 87 ms (n = 23) before the upstroke of the integrated XII nerve discharge. BACKGROUND: It has already been shown that the production of fucosylceramide, an aberrant glycolipid, is associated with neoplastic changes in human tissues. The authors of this study designed a sandwich radioimmunoassay (RIA) using a mouse monoclonal anti-fucosylceramide antibody, PC47H, designated as PC/PC RIA, and measured the level of u-FCC, an antigen of PC47H, in the urine of cancer patients. METHODS: The cohort comprised 41 patients with gastric carcinoma, 35 with colorectal carcinoma, 34 with other malignancies, 14 with cholelithiasis, 18 with gastric ulcer, and 110 healthy individuals. The u-FCC was quantified by PC/PC RIA. The cutoff value of u-FCC was obtained from the 110 healthy individuals, and the rates of positivity for gastric and colorectal carcinoma patients were evaluated. RESULTS: The rates of u-FCC positivity were 63% for patients with gastric carcinoma and 69% for colorectal carcinoma patients. The rate was only 1% (1/110) for the healthy individuals. The u-FCC value did not correlate with the values of either CA 19-9 or carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). In a combination assay of u-FCC with CA 19-9 and CEA, the positivity rates were 84% for gastric carcinoma patients and 85% for colorectal carcinoma patients. CONCLUSIONS: Gastric and colorectal carcinoma patients have significantly high levels of u-FCC in their urine compared with normal individuals.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine type, distribution, and radiographic appearance of condylar fractures of the third metacarpal bone (MC-3) or third metatarsal bone (MT-3) in Thoroughbreds (TB), Standardbreds (SB), and Arabians, to assess long-term outcome of horses in which fractures were repaired surgically, and to identify variables associated with prognosis for return to racing. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 224 horses with 233 fractures. PROCEDURE: Medical records and radiographs obtained before and after treatment were reviewed. Racing performance before and after treatment was determined by reviewing race records. RESULTS: TB were overrepresented and SB were underrepresented, compared with the hospital population. Thoroughbreds had significantly more lateral condylar fractures and significantly more forelimb fractures than did SB. Thoroughbreds were less likely to race after treatment if they had complete, rather than incomplete, lateral condylar fracture or had concurrent proximal sesamoid bone fracture. Convalescent time for TB with medial condylar fractures of MT-3 was significantly longer than that for TB with lateral condylar fractures of MT-3. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Horses with condylar fractures of MC-3 and MT-3 that had minimal pathologic changes in the involved joint had a favorable prognosis for returning to racing after surgical treatment. Prognosis for horses with complete condylar fractures, particularly those with substantial pathologic changes in the involved joint, was worse.  相似文献

Objective: The interaction of cell and medical biomaterial is one of the significant factors to affect clinical application of medical biomaterial. This research is to investigate three of suture lines how to affect the proliferation and cell cycle of lung adenocarcinoma cell A549 in vitro. Methods: Three of suture lines were respectively cultivated with lung adenocarcinoma cell A549, after of 72 hours, we detected absorptions of each group by MTT method in order to reflect the proliferation of lung adenocarcinoma cell A549, and also examined percentage of G1 period cells and S period cells of each group by flow cytometry. Results: Different of suture lines had different effects on the proliferation and cell cycle of lung adenocarcinoma cell A549 (P < 0.05). The effect of absorbent suture line was the strongest on the proliferation and cell cycle of lung adenocarcinoma cell A549, the effect of chorda serica chirurgicalis was medium, and the effect of slide wire was poor. Different length of each suture line had different effects on the proliferation and cell cycle of lung adenocarcinoma cell A549 (P < 0.05).Conclusion: Three of suture line materials have different effects on the proliferation and cell cycle of lung adenocarcinoma cell A549, with dose-effect relationship.  相似文献

Micropuncture and clearance techniques were used simultaneously to determine the effect of substance P on proximal tubular and overall renal function in anesthetized rats. This polypeptide, infused in saline at 50 pg/min into the abdominal aorta above the renal arteries, produced increases in urine flow, 2.7-3.7 mul/min.g kidney wt (P is less than 0.005); urinary sodium concentration, 32-61 meq/liter (P is less than 0.01); and sodium excretion, 89-223 neq/min (P is less than 0.005). Tubular fluid to plasma inulin concentration ratio measured in the last accessible proximal convolution fell from 2.21 to 1.80 (P is less than 0.001), and thus fractional reabsorption was reduced from 54 to 44% (P is less than 0.001). Absolute reabsorption by the proximal convoluted tubule was also reduced 15.5-12.5 nl/min (P is less than 0.025). In a control series of animals, saline alone infused at the same rate did not produce any statistically significant changes in the measured parameters over the same time period. The intrerenal mechanism responsible for the reduction in proximal reabsorption appears to be a tubular one since no consistent or significant changes were observed in kidney or single nephron glomerular filtration rate, renal plasma flow, or intrarenal hydrostatic pressures. No evidence was found to indicate redistribution of filtration rate, or plasma flow, or a reduction in filtration fraction.  相似文献

Since it covers the lateral wall of the mastoid air system, the suprameatal triangle is of importance to otologic surgeons during mastoidectomy. Because of this clinical importance, topographic anatomy of the suprameatal spine and depression was studied on Anatolian skulls. In all, 363 male and 231 female skulls were studied. The most prevalent type of suprameatal spine resembled a crest and was found in both sexes on the right (77.6%) and left (80%) sides. The absence of a suprameatal depression was significantly higher in females (right 9.1%; left 8.7%) than in males (right 1.7%; left 2.5%). Suprameatal depressions were mostly shallow in female subjects, but were mostly observed in males to be at a medium depth or deep.  相似文献

Populations of two types of luteal cell (large and small) were prepared from CL of sows at 60 days of gestation. When the two types were recombined and incubated for 2 h, the amount of progesterone released into the medium was almost twice the sum of that released by each cell type alone. When the cells were superfused in vitro, in an "in series" arrangement such that the superfusate from one cell type then passed through the chamber containing the second cell type, the small cells were responsible for increasing the production of progesterone by the large cells. When cell population were superfused with media containing inhibitors of progesterone synthesis, trilostane completely blocked progesterone release but aminoglutethimide only reduced progesterone output by half, even when the concentration of inhibitor was increased. Addition of pregnenolone to the superfusion medium increased progesterone production by both cell types approximately 3-fold, whereas addition of cholesterol only increased progesterone production by the large cells.  相似文献

Examined the effects of 3 redundancy reduction procedures on reading comprehension, time, and rate of 244 male and female freshman and sophomore college students. A 2,217-word news article was reduced 10%, 30% and 50% by 1 of 3 reduction methods: word frequency, grammatical, and subjective. Reduction method had no effect on comprehension at the 10% and 30% reduction levels, but at the 50% level the subjective method produced better reading performance than the 2 objective methods. No time was saved by reading the reduced versions because there was a decrease in reading speed. Three microsatellites have been identified in cosmids from the human X chromosome. The cosmids have been assigned locus numbers DXS554, DXS559, and DXS566 and have been localized to Xq12-q13 (DXS554 and DXS559) and Xq13 (DXS566). In addition, they have been genetically mapped in relation to the androgen receptor (AR), phosphoglycerate kinase 1, pseudogene 1 (PGK1P1), and phosphoglycerate kinase (PGK1) loci in the proximal long arm. Genetically, the localization of microsatellites at DXS554 and DXS566 is indistinguishable from PGK1, whereas that at DXS559 maps between AR and PGK1, close to PGK1P1. DXS566 is identical to the independently identified DXS441 marker. These markers should be useful for physical and genetic mapping in this region.  相似文献
