The effect of coupling agents, two silane and one zirconate, on the mechanical properties of mica/epoxy and glass fiber/mica/epoxy composites has been investigated. The results showed that tensile modulus and flexural strength and modulus values were improved by the surface treatment of the coupling agents. The property retention was also found to be better in the case of coupling agent-treated mica/epoxy samples after boiling in water for 2h. In the case of glass fiber/mica/epoxy composites, the flexural modulus and interlaminar shear strength values improved with increase in mica content, but the effect of coupling agents was not pronounced.  相似文献

A study on the flexural properties of hybrid composites reinforced by S‐2 glass and TR30S carbon fibers is presented in this article. Test specimens were made by the hand lay‐up process in an intraply configuration with varying numbers of glass/epoxy laminas substituted for carbon/epoxy laminas. These specimens were then tested in the three point bend configuration in accordance with ASTM D790‐07 at a span to depth ratio of 32. The failed specimens were examined under an optical microscope, and the results show that the dominant failure mode is at the compressive side. The flexural behavior was also simulated by finite element analysis (FEA). Based on the FEA results, the flexural modulus and flexural strength were calculated. Good agreement is found between the experiments and FEA. It is shown that flexural modulus decreases with increasing percentage of S‐2 glass fibers, positive hybrid effects exist by substituting carbon fibers for glass fibers, and applying a thin layer of S‐2 glass fiber‐reinforced polymer on the compressive surface yields the highest flexural strength. The modeling approach presented will pave a way to the effective design of hybrid composites. POLYM. COMPOS., © 2012 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

The objective of this research article is to compare the mechanical and tribological properties of jute‐glass‐fiber‐reinforced epoxy (J‐G‐E) hybrid composites with and without fly ash particulate filler. A dry hand lay‐up technique is used to fabricate all the laminates. The properties including flexural strength, tensile strength, flexural modulus, and erosion behavior of all the composites are evaluated as per American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. The fly ash particulate‐filled hybrid composite shows a better mechanical and tribological property. The maximum flexural strength and flexural modulus are obtained for GJGJ+ 5 wt% fly ash filler epoxy composites. Whereas the maximum tensile strength is obtained for GJJG+ 10 wt% fly ash filler epoxy composites. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis also has been carried out to categorize mechanical and tribological behavior of composites. POLYM. In this study acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene (ABS) terpolymer was reinforced with 3‐aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APS)‐treated short glass fibers (SGFs). The effects of SGF concentration and extrusion process conditions, such as the screw speed and barrel temperature profile, on the mechanical properties of the composites were examined. Increasing the SGF concentration in the ABS matrix from 10 wt% to 30 wt% resulted in improved tensile strength, tensile modulus and flexural modulus, but drastically lowered the strain‐at‐break and the impact strength. The average fiber length decreased when the concentration of glass fibers increased. The increase in screw speed decreased the average fiber length, and therefore the tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural modulus, and impact strength were affected negatively and the strain‐at‐break was affected positively. The increase in extrusion temperature decreased the fiber length degradation, and therefore the tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural modulus, and impact strength increased. At higher temperatures the ABS matrix degraded and the mechanical strength of the composites decreased. To obtain a strong interaction at the interface, polyamide‐6 (PA6) at varying concentrations was introduced into the ABS/30 wt% SGF composite. The incorporation and increasing amount of PA6 in the composites broadened the fiber length distribution (FLD) owing to the low melt viscosity of PA6. Tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural modulus, and impact strength values increased with an increase in the PA6 content of the ABS/PA6/SGF systems due to the improved adhesion at the interface, which was confirmed by the ratio of tensile strength to flexural strength as an adhesion parameter. These results were also supported by scanning electron micrographs of the ABS/PA6/SGF composites, which exhibited an improved adhesion between the SGFs and the ABS/PA6 matrix. POLYM. The denture bases nanocomposites were prepared by adding organic montormollontrite(OMMT) into poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix. The resulting composites were characterized by XRD, TEM, and ISTRON 3365 flexural strength testing systems. One‐way analysis of variance and Tukey's test were used to compare the difference in flexural strength and flexural modulus. The results showed the formation of exfoliated‐intercalated and intercalated denture base nanocmposite when the content of OMMT was 3 wt % and 5 wt % in the powder of denture base resin, respectively. The maximum ultimate flexural strength was observed in denture base nanocomposite containing 3 wt % of OMMT and flexural strength decreased with further increases of OMMT content. The flexural modulus of denture base nanocomposite increased continually with OMMT content increasing from 1 wt % to 10 wt %. Significant difference in both flexural strength and flexural modulus was observed between the nanocomposites with 3 wt % OMMT and controls (n = 5, P < 0.05). © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Silane‐grafted polypropylene manufactured by a reactive grafting process was used as the coupling agent in polypropylene/glass‐fiber composites to improve the interaction of the interfacial regions. Polypropylene reinforced with 30% by weight of short glass fibers was injection‐molded and the mechanical behaviors were investigated. The results indicate that the mechanical properties (tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and Izod impact strength) of the composite increased remarkably as compared with the noncoupled glass fiber/polypropylene. SEM of the fracture surfaces of the coupled composites shows a good adhesion at the fiber/matrix interface: The fibers are coated with matrix polymer, and a matrix transition region exists near the fibers. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Silicone resins have been used as binders for ceramic frit coatings and can withstand temperatures of 650°C to 1260°C. Conceptually, silicone resins can potentially be used as matrices for high temperature fiber‐reinforced composites. The mechanical and thermal properties of a commercially available silicone resin, Dow Corning® 6‐2230, were characterized. Neat 6‐2230 resin was found to have inferior room temperature mechanical properties such as flexural, tensile and fracture properties when compared to epoxy. The room temperature flexural properties and short beam shear strength of the silicone/glass composites were also found to be lower than those of epoxy/glass composite with similar glass content. However, the silicone resin had better elevated temperature properties. At an elevated temperature of 316°C, the retentions of flexural modulus and strength were 80% and 40% respectively of room temperature values; these were superior to those of phenolic/glass. Unlike the carbon‐based resins, the drop in flexural properties of the silicon/glass laminates with temperature leveled off with increase in temperature beyond 250°C. The resin weight loss at 316°C in 100 cm3/min of flowing air was small compared to other carbon‐based resins such as PMR‐15 and LaRC TPI. Only Avimid‐N appeared comparable to Dow Corning® 6‐2230.  相似文献

In this study, glass fibers were modified using γ‐glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane of different concentrations to improve the interfacial adhesion at interfaces between fibers and matrix. Effects of γ‐glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane on mechanical properties and fracture behavior of glass fiber/epoxy composites were investigated experimentally. Mechanical properties of the composites have been investigated by tensile tests, short beam tests, and flexural tests. The short‐beam method was used to measure the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of laminates. The tensile and flexural properties of composites were characterized by tensile and three‐point bending tests, respectively. The fracture surfaces of the composites were observed with a scanning electron microscope. On comparing the results obtained for the different concentrations of silane solution, it was found that the 0.5% GPS silane treatment provided the best mechanical properties. The ILSS value of heat‐cleaned glass fiber reinforced composite is enhanced by ∼59% as a result of the glass fiber treatment with 0.5% γ‐GPS. Also, an improvement of about 37% in tensile strength, about 78% in flexural strength of the composite with the 0.5% γ‐GPS treatment of glass fibers was observed. POLYM. A furan/epoxy blend applicable to composite manufacture was studied and corresponding basalt fiber‐reinforced composites were prepared. The processability, mechanical properties, and reasons for the improved mechanical properties of this blend were investigated by rheology machine, mechanical testing machine, and scanning electron microscopy. With excellent processability, furan/epoxy was suitable for manufacturing composites. Furan/epoxy with the ratio of 5/5 showed the best properties, and the impact strength, flexural strength and flexural modulus were 15.43 kJ/m2, 102.81 MPa, and 3209.40 MPa, respectively. The river‐like fracture surface of the furan/epoxy system was well consistent with the mechanical properties. The mechanical and anti‐corrosive properties of basalt fiber‐reinforced furan/epoxy composites were also studied. The mechanical properties of composites changed the same as those of furan/epoxy matrix did. Furan resin effectively improved the anti‐acid but not anti‐alkali property of composites, probably because furan could be cured in acidic condition and basalt fiber was resistant to acid and alkali. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hybrid carbon-glass fiber composites of novolak epoxy-based vinyl ester resins have been investigated. The chemical resistance, the thermo-oxidative stability and the mechanical properties such as tensile strength and tensile modulus, as well as flexural strength and flexural modulus, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and impact strength have also been estimated. The combination of glass and carbon fibers in the hybrid turns out to be an excellent mix. These composites have good tensile and flexural properties as well as the good chemical resistance of the carbon fibers and the high impact strength of the glass fibers and also the thermo-oxidative stability of highly aromatic vinyl ester resins based on novolak epoxy.  相似文献

In the present study, the mechanical and thermal properties of sisal fiber‐reinforced unsaturated polyester (UP)‐toughened epoxy composites were investigated. The sisal fibers were chemically treated with alkali (NaOH) and silane solutions in order to improve the interfacial interaction between fibers and matrix. The chemical composition of resins and fibers was identified by using Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy. The UP‐toughened epoxy blends were obtained by mixing UP (5, 10, and 15 wt%) into the epoxy resin. The fiber‐reinforced composites were prepared by incorporating sisal fibers (10, 20, and 30 wt%) within the optimized UP‐toughened epoxy blend. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the morphological changes of the fibers and the adhesion between the fibers and the UP‐toughened epoxy system. The results showed that the tensile and flexural strength of (alkali‐silane)‐treated fiber (30 wt%) ‐reinforced composites increased by 83% and 55%, respectively, as compared with that of UP‐toughened epoxy blend. Moreover, thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the (alkali‐silane)‐treated fiber and its composite exhibited higher thermal stability than the untreated and alkali‐treated fiber systems. An increase in storage modulus and glass transition temperature was observed for the UP‐toughened epoxy matrix on reinforcement with treated fibers. The water uptake behavior of both alkali and alkali‐silane‐treated fiber‐reinforced composites is found to be less as compared with the untreated fiber‐reinforced composite. J. VINYL ADDIT. A novel process has been developed to manufacture poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) pultruded parts. The mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties, environmental effects, postformability of pultruded composites and properties of various fiber (glass, carbon and Kevlar 49 aramid fiber) reinforced PMMA composites have been studied. Results show that the mechanical and thermal properties (i.e. tensile strength, flexural strength and modulus, impact strength and HDT) increase with fiber content. Kevlar fiber/PMMA composites possess the highest impact strength and HDT, while carbon fiber/PMMA composites show the highest tensile strength, tensile and flexural modulus, and glass fiber/PMMA composites show the highest flexural strength. Experimental tensile strengths of all composites except carbon fiber/PMMA composites follow the rule of mixtures. The deviation of carbon fiber/PMMA composite is due to the fiber breakage during processing. Pultruded glass fiber reinforced PMMA composites exhibit good weather resistance. They can be postformed by thermoforming, and mechanical properties can be improved by postforming. The dynamic shear storage modulus (G′) of pultruded glass fiber reinforced PMMA composites increased with decreasing pulling rate, and G′ was higher than that of pultruded Nylon 6 and polyester composites.  相似文献

This study reports the preparation of advanced carbon fiber composites with a nanocomposite matrix prepared by dispersing multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in a powder type epoxy oligomer with two different processing techniques (1) master batch dilution technique and (2) direct mixing (with the help of twin‐screw extruder in both cases). The master batch technique shows a better efficiency for the dispersion of the CNTs aggregates. The rheological results demonstrate that the incorporation of the CNTs into the epoxy oligomer leads, as expected, to a marked increase in the viscosity and of the presence of a yield stress point that also depends on the processing technique adopted. Carbon fiber (CFRP) and glass fiber (GFRP) composite materials were produced by electrostatic spraying of the epoxy matrix formulations on the carbon and glass fabric, respectively, followed by calendering and mold pressing. The mechanical properties of the obtained epoxy/CNT‐matrix composite materials, such as interlaminar fracture toughness, flexural strength, shear storage and loss moduli are discussed in terms of the processing techniques and fabric material. The incorporation of 1 wt% CNTs in the epoxy matrix results in a relevant increase of the fracture toughness, flexural strength and modulus of both CFRP and GFRP. POLYM. Poly(vinyl chloride)/organophilic montmorillonite (PVC/OMMT) nanocomposites were prepared by means of melt blending. A liquid epoxy resin was used to aid PVC chains in intercalating into silicate layers. The effects of the preparation methods and epoxy resin contents on the melt intercalation of PVC were investigated. The morphology development, mechanical properties and optical properties of the PVC/OMMT composites were tested as functions of epoxy resin content and OMMT content. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the morphology of the resulting composites. After being pretreated by the epoxy resin, the OMMT layers were largely intercalated into the PVC matrix, and even exfoliated at high epoxy resin content. The addition of epoxy resin led to a decrease in optical clarity of the composites but improved the processing stability, as indicated by yellowness index and haze measurement. However, the optical clarity of the composites containing 4 phr of epoxy resin (PVC/E‐OMMT) was improved by increasing the OMMT content, as shown by light transmission. Both the tensile strength and notched Izod impact strength of the PVC/E‐OMMT composites reached their maximum values when the OMMT content was 0.5 phr and the epoxy resin content was 2 phr. With further increase of the OMMT content and the epoxy resin content, the tensile strength decreased but was still higher than that of original PVC. The method of addition of epoxy resin had little effect on the physical properties but mainly influenced the morphology of PVC/OMMT nanocomposites. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength and flexural modulus properties were investigated on epoxy/clay nanocomposites to assess the influence of nanoclay. Mechanical properties were significantly increased due to an increase in clay content up to 5 wt%, and decreased with a further increase in clay content. Optimal improvement of properties was observed with increased clay content up to 5 wt%. Duo properties of the glass fiber were improved by clay addition due to the improved interface between the glass fiber and epoxy. SEM analysis was conducted on different fractured surfaces to study the mechanical behavior.  相似文献

Epoxy resin nanocomposites incorporated with 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 wt % pristine graphene and modified graphene oxide (GO) nanoflakes were produced and used to fabricate carbon fiber‐reinforced and glass fiber‐reinforced composite panels via vacuum‐assisted resin transfer molding process. Mechanical and thermal properties of the composite panels—called hierarchical graphene composites—were determined according to ASTM standards. It was observed that the studied properties were improved consistently by increasing the amount of nanoinclusions. Particularly, in the presence of 4 wt % GO in the resin, tensile modulus, compressive strength, and flexural modulus of carbon fiber (glass fiber) composites were improved 15% (21%), 34% (84%), and 40% (68%), respectively. Likewise, with inclusion of 4 wt % pristine graphene in the resin, tensile modulus, compressive strength, and flexural modulus of carbon fiber (glass fiber) composites were improved 11% (7%), 30% (77%), and 34% (58%), respectively. Also, thermal conductivity of the carbon fiber (glass fiber) composites with 4% GO inclusion was improved 52% (89%). Similarly, thermal conductivity of the carbon fiber (glass fiber) composites with 4% pristine graphene inclusion was improved 45% (80%). The reported results indicate that both pristine graphene and modified GO nanoflakes are excellent options to enhance the mechanical and thermal properties of fiber‐reinforced polymeric composites and to make them viable replacement materials for metallic parts in different industries, such as wind energy, aerospace, marine, and automotive. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Composites with good toughness properties were prepared from chemically modified soy epoxy resin and glass fiber without additional petroleum based toughening agent. Chlorinated soy epoxy (CSE) resin was prepared from soybean oil. The CSE was characterised by spectral, and titration method. The prepared CSE was blended with commercial epoxy resin in different ratios and cured at 85°C for 3 h, and post cured at 225°C for 2 h using m‐phenylene diamine (MPDA) as curing agent. The cure temperatures of epoxy/CSE/MPDA with different compositions were found to be in the range of (151.2–187.5°C). The composite laminates were fabricated using epoxy /CSE/MPDA‐glass fiber at different compositions. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength (248–299 MPa), tensile modulus (2.4–3.4 GPa), flexural strength (346–379 MPa), flexural modulus (6.3–7.8 GPa) and impact strength (29.7–34.2) were determined. The impact strength increased with the increase in the CSE content. The interlaminor fracture toughness (GIC) values also increased from 0.6953 KJ/m2 for neat epoxy resin to 0.9514 KJ/m2 for 15%CSE epoxy‐modified system. Thermogravimetric studies reveal that the thermal stability of the neat epoxy resin was decreased by incorporation of CSE. POLYM. COMPOS., 2009. © 2008 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

A series of copolymers and glass fiber composites were successfully prepared from 2,2‐bis [4‐(3,4‐dicyanophenoxy) phenyl] propane (BAPh), epoxy resins E‐44 (EP), and polyarylene ether nitriles (PEN) with 4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl sulfone as curing additive. The gelation time was shortened from 25 min to 4 min when PEN content was 0 wt % and 15 wt %, respectively. PEN could accelerate the crosslinking reaction between the phthalonitrile and epoxy. The initial decomposition temperatures (Ti) of BAPh/EP copolymers and glass fiber composites were all more than 350°C in nitrogen. The Tg of 15 wt % PEN glass fiber composites increased by 21.2°C compared with that of in comparison with BAPh/EP glass fiber composite. The flexural strength of the copolymers and glass fiber composites reached 119.8 MPa and 698.5 MPa which increased by 16.6 MPa and 127.3 MPa in comparison with BAPh/EP composite, respectively. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
