In this study, the high-content SiCnw reinforced SiC ceramic matrix composites (SiCnw/SiC CMC) were successfully fabricated by hot pressing β-SiC and sintering additive (Al2O3-Y2O3) with boron nitride interphase modification SiCnw. The effects of sintering additive content and mass fraction (5–25 wt%) of SiCnw on the density, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated. The results showed that with the increase of sintering additives from 10 wt% to 12 wt%, the relative density of the SiCnw/SiC CMC increased from 97.3% to 98.9%, attributed to the generated Y3Al5O12 (YAG) liquid phase from the Al2O3-Y2O3 that promotes the rearrangement and migration of SiC grains. The comprehensive performance of the obtained composite with 15 wt% SiCnw possessed the optimal flexural strength and fracture toughness of 524 ± 30.24 MPa and 12.39 ± 0.49 MPa·m1/2, respectively. Besides, the fracture mode of the composites with 25 wt% SiCnw content revealed a pseudo-plastic fracture behavior. It concludes that the 25 wt% SiCnw/SiC CMC was toughened by the fiber pull-outs, debonding, bridging, and crack deflection that can consume plenty of fracture energy. The strategy of SiC nanowires worked as a main bearing phase for the fabrication of SiC/SiC CMC providing critical information for understanding the mechanical behavior of high toughness and high strength SiC nanoceramic matrix composites.  相似文献

To improve the fracture properties of ZrB2-based composites, SiC nanowires (SiCnw) were introduced into the powder mixtures via an in-situ growth method and the composites were fabricated by hot pressing. Microstructure observations found that the SiCnw with a diameter of less than 100?nm presented twisted morphology and homogeneously distributed among ceramic particles. It was also found that the SiCnw could inhibit the grain growth of ZrB2-based composites. Compared to that of composites without SiCnw, the fracture toughness and the work of fracture for the composites with SiCnw were 7.17?MPa?m1/2 and 205?J?m?2, which increased by 61.1% and 91.6%, respectively. The main enhancing mechanisms could be associated with the obvious crack deflection, crack branching and pull out of SiCnw. The SiCnw could refrain the crack opening and reduce the stress intensity in front of crack tips, which absorbed more energy and improved the fracture properties.  相似文献

This study proposes a combustion-based ceramic matrix composite processing technique intended on single-step in situ deposition of single-crystal SiC nanowires (SiCnw) on the surface of carbon fibers (Cf) and formation of SiCnw–reinforced SiC matrix. This was accomplished by Ta-catalyzed combustion of poly-(C2F4)-containing reactive mixtures with pre-mixed chopped Cf. Depending on the combustion conditions, carbon fiber surface is subjected either to formation of diffusion layers, ceramic particle incrustation or growth of continuous arrays of carbon-coated single-crystal SiCnw with a nearly defect-free lattice, 10–50 nm diameter and 15–20 μm length. Thermodynamics, phase and structure formation mechanisms are explored, and the optimal conditions are outlined for reproducible Cf/in situ SiCnw dual reinforcement of SiC-based ceramics. Hot pressing at 1500 °C produced Cf/in situ SiCnw-reinforced ceramic SiC–TaSi2 specimens with a relative density of 97%, 19 GPa Vickers hardness, 3-point flexural strength σ = 420 ± 70 MPa and fracture toughness K1C = 12.5 MPa m1/2.  相似文献

To tailor the fiber–matrix interface of SiC nanowires-reinforced SiC (SiCnw/SiC) ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) for improved mechanical properties, SiC nanowires were coated with BN and pyrolytic carbon (PyC) compound coatings prepared by the dip-coating process in boric acid and urea solution and the pyrolysis of phenolic resin. SiCnw/SiC CMC with PyC/BN interfaces were fabricated by reactive melt infiltration (RMI) at 1680°C for 1 h. The influences of phenolic resin content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the CMC were investigated. The results showed that the flexural strength and fracture toughness reach the maximum values of 294 MPa and 4.74 MPa m1/2 as the phenolic resin content was 16 and 12 wt%, respectively. The displacement–load curve of the sample exhibited a gradient drop with increasing phenolic resin content up to 12 wt%. The results demonstrated that the PyC/BN compound coatings could play the role of protecting the SiCnw from degradation as well as improving the more moderate interfacial bonding strengths during the RMI.  相似文献

This study aimed to investigate the toughening effects of SiC nanowires (SiCnw) and SiC whiskers (SiCw) on high-entropy carbide based composites prepared at different temperatures (1600°C and 2000°C). At low temperature (1600°C), SiCnw and SiCw maintain their original morphology and properties, and exhibit the good toughening effects. The SiCnw with larger aspect ratio and more curly wires exhibit a much stronger toughening effect on the (Ti0.2Zr0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2Mo0.2)C0.8 composites reinforced with 15 vol.% SiCnw, which shows the highest value of fracture toughness about 6.7 MPa∙m1/2. However, at high sintering temperature (2000°C), SiCnw and SiCw are prone to thermal-induced damages, which significantly reduces their mechanical properties, and thus, toughening effects on (Ti0.2Zr0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2Mo0.2)C0.8 composites. The addition of SiCw, which have better thermal stability at 2000°C, results in the (Ti0.2Zr0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2Mo0.2)C0.8–15 vol.% SiCw composite exhibiting relatively better fracture toughness, about 3.7 MPa∙m1/2. Based on the results of the current study, the critical influence of SiCnw and SiCw on the toughening of (Ti0.2Zr0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2Mo0.2)C0.8 composites is highly dependent on their high-temperature thermal stability.  相似文献

SiC fiber reinforced SiC matrix (SiCf/SiC) composites prepared by chemical vapor infiltration are one of promising materials for nuclear fuel cladding tube due to pronounced low radioactivity and excellent corrosion resistance. As a structure component, mechanical properties of the composites tubes are extremely important. In this study, three kinds of SiCf preform with 2D fiber wound structure, 2D plain weave structure and 2.5D shallow bend-joint structure were deposited with PyC interlayer of about 150–200?nm, and then densified with SiC matrix by chemical vapor infiltration at 1050?°C or 1100?°C. The influence of preform structure and deposition temperature of SiC matrix on microstructure and ring compression properties of SiCf/SiC composites tubes were evaluated, and the results showed that these factors have a significant influence on ring compression strength. The compressive strength of SiCf/SiC composites with 2D plain weave structure and 2.5D shallow bend-joint structure are 377.75?MPa and 482.96?MPa respectively, which are significantly higher than that of the composites with 2D fiber wound structure (92.84?MPa). SiCf/SiC composites deposited at 1100?°C looks like a more porous structure with SiC whiskers appeared when compared with the composites deposited at 1050?°C. Correspondingly, the ring compression strength of the composites deposited at 1100?°C (566.44?MPa) is higher than that of the composites deposited at 1050?°C (482.96?MPa), with a better fracture behavior. Finally, the fracture mechanism of SiCf/SiC composites with O-ring shape was discussed in detail.  相似文献

Continuous silicon carbide fiber reinforced silicon carbide matrix (SiCf/SiC) composites have promising applications in aero-engine due to their unique advantages, such as low density, high modulus and strength, outstanding high temperature resistance and oxidation resistance. As SiC fibers are main reinforcements in SiCf/SiC composites, the crystallization rate and initial damage degree of SiC fibers are seriously influenced by preparation temperatures of SiCf/SiC composites, namely mechanical properties of SiC fibers and SiCf/SiC composites are influenced by preparation temperatures. In this paper, KD-II SiC fibers were woven into 3D4d preforms and SiC matrix was fabricated by PIP process at 1100 °C, 1200 °C, 1400 °C and 1600 °C. Digital image correlation (DIC) method was adopted to measure the uniaxial tensile properties of these SiCf/SiC composites. In addition, finite element method (FEM) based on representative volume element (RVE) was adopted to predict the mechanical properties of SiCf/SiC composites. The good agreements between numerical results and experimental results of uniaxial tensile tests verified the validity of the RVE. In last, the transverse tensile, transverse shear, uniaxial shear properties were predicted by this method. The predicted results illustrated that axial tensile, transverse tensile and axial shear properties were greatly influenced by the preparation temperatures of SiCf/SiC composites while transverse shear properties were not significantly various. And the mechanical properties of SiCf/SiC composites peaked at 1200 °C among these four temperatures while their values reached their lowest points at 1600 °C because of thermal damage and brittle failure of SiCf/SiC composites.  相似文献

Alternating pyrolytic carbon/boron nitride (PyC/BN)n multilayer coatings were applied to the KD–II silicon carbide (SiC) fibres by chemical vapour deposition technique to fabricate continuous SiC fibre-reinforced SiC matrix (SiCf/SiC) composites with improved flexural strength and fracture toughness. Three-dimensional SiCf/SiC composites with different interfaces were fabricated by polymer infiltration and pyrolysis process. The microstructure of the coating was characterised by scanning electron microscopy, X–photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The interfacial shear strength was determined by the single-fibre push-out test. Single-edge notched beam (SENB) test and three-point bending test were used to evaluate the influence of multilayer interfaces on the mechanical properties of SiCf/SiC composites. The results indicated that the (PyC/BN)n multilayer interface led to optimum flexural strength and fracture toughness of 566.0?MPa and 21.5?MPa?m1/2, respectively, thus the fracture toughness of the composites was significantly improved.  相似文献

The current study introduces a methodology for the fabrication of porous silicon carbide nanowire/silicon carbide (SiCnw/SiC) ceramics with macroscopic unidirectionally aligned channels and reports on their microstructural and mechanical properties. The material was produced by freezing of a water-based slurry of β-SiC nanowires (SiCnw) with control of the ice growth direction. Pores were subsequently generated by sublimation of the columnar ice during freeze-drying. Chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) of SiC into the open pore network of the SiCnw aerogel with unidirectionally aligned channels, resulted in the formation of highly porous SiCnw/SiC ceramics which exhibited a unique microstructure as identified by scanning electron microscopy. The pore size distribution and the mechanical properties of the as-fabricated porous ceramics were examined by mercury intrusion porosimetry and three-point bending and compression tests, respectively, while phase composition was investigated through X-ray diffraction.  相似文献

A SiC-nanowire-modified SiC–Si (SiCnw@SiC–Si) coating was prepared for carbon-fibre-reinforced carbon-matrix (C/C) composites using a two-step method based on thermal evaporation and gaseous silicon infiltration, and the effects of SiC nanowires on the oxidation and ablation behaviours of the coated samples were studied. Oxidation tests conducted at 1500 °C revealed that the weight loss of the SiC–Si-coated C/C composite was 15.85% after 6 h, whereas the SiCnw@SiC–Si-coated C/C composite experienced a significantly lower weight loss of 1.27% after 50 h. Ablation tests suggested that the mass and linear ablation rates of the SiCnw@SiC–Si-coated C/C composite were 0.05 mg/s and 0.09 μm/s, respectively; they were reduced by 78.26 and 92.74%, respectively, compared with those of the SiC–Si-coated C/C composite. Careful characterisation suggested that the network structure of the SiC nanowires in the SiC–Si phase can suppress crack propagation and firmly attach to the coating surface to enhance the interfacial adhesion between the coating and substrate, leading to improved anti-oxidation and anti-ablation properties. The SiCnw@SiC–Si coating could offer a technological foundation for preventing the oxidation and ablation of C/C composites in aerospace engineering.  相似文献

In this work, quasi-isotropic chopped carbon fiber-reinforced pyrolytic carbon and silicon carbide matrix (Cf/C–SiC) composites and chopped silicon carbide fiber-reinforced silicon carbide matrix (SiCf/SiC) composites were prepared via novel nondamaging method, namely airlaid process combined with chemical vapor infiltration. Both composites exhibit random fiber distribution and homogeneous pore size. Young's modulus of highly textured pyrolytic carbon (PyC) matrix is 23.01 ± 1.43 GPa, and that of SiC matrix composed of columnar crystals is 305.8 ± 9.49 GPa in Cf/C–SiC composites. Tensile strength and interlaminar shear strength of Cf/C–SiC composites are 52.56 ± 4.81 and 98.16 ± 24.62 MPa, respectively, which are both higher than those of SiCf/SiC composites because of appropriate interfacial shear strength and introduction of low-modulus and highly textured PyC matrix. Excellent mechanical properties of Cf/C–SiC composites, particularly regarding interlaminar shear strength, are due to their quasi-isotropic structure, interfacial debonding, interfacial sliding, and crack deflection. In addition to the occurrence of crack deflection at the fiber/matrix interface, crack deflection in Cf/C–SiC composites takes also place at the interface between PyC–SiC composite matrix and the interlamination of multilayered PyC matrix. Outstanding mechanical properties of as-prepared Cf/C–SiC composites render them potential candidates for application as thermal structure materials under complex stress conditions.  相似文献

Unidirectional (UD) silicon carbide (SiC) fiber-reinforced SiC matrix (UD SiCf/SiC) composites with CVI BN interphase were fabricated by polymer infiltration-pyrolysis (PIP) process. The effects of the anisotropic distribution of SiC fibers on the mechanical properties, thermophysical properties and electromagnetic properties of UD SiCf/SiC composites in different directions were studied. In the direction parallel to the axial direction of SiC fibers, SiC fibers bear the load and BN interphase ensures the interface debonding, so the flexural strength and the fracture toughness of the UD SiCf/SiC composites are 813.0 ± 32.4 MPa and 26.1 ± 2.9 MPa·m1/2, respectively. In the direction perpendicular to the axial direction of SiC fibers, SiC fibers cannot bear the load and the low interfacial bonding strengths between SiC fiber/BN interphase (F/I) and BN interphase/SiC matrix (I/M) both decrease the matrix cracking stress, so the corresponding values are 36.6 ± 6.9 MPa and 0.9 ± 0.5 MPa?m1/2, respectively. The thermal expansion behaviors of UD SiCf/SiC composites are similar to those of SiC fibers in the direction parallel to the axial direction of SiC fibers, and are similiar to those of SiC matrix in the direction perpendicular to the axial direction of SiC fibers. The total electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (EM SET) of UD SiCf/SiC composites attains 32 dB and 29 dB when the axial direction of SiC fibers is perpendicular and parallel to the electric field direction, respectively. The difference of conductivity in different directions is the main reason causing the different SET. And the dominant electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding mechanism is absorption for both studied directions.  相似文献

ZrB2–SiC composites were prepared by hot pressing with different sources of SiC to study the effect of SiC with different morphology on densification, microstructure, phase composition and mechanical properties like hardness, fracture toughness and tribological properties (namely, scratch resistance, wear parameters) and thermal behaviour of the composites. Three different ZrB2–SiC composites, i.e. ZrB2–SiCP (polycarbosilane derived SiC), ZrB2–SiCC (SiC from CUMI, India) and ZrB2–SiCH (SiC from H. C. Starck, Germany), were studied. It is found that ZrB2–SiCC composite shows highest hardness (19·13 GPa) and fracture toughness (5·30 MPa m1/2 at 1 kgf load) in comparison with other composites. Interconnected network, better contiguity between grains of ZrB2–SiC composites and impurity content in starting powders can play significant roles for achieving high mechanical, tribological and thermal properties of the composites. Coefficient of friction and wear parameters of all ZrB2–SiC composites are very low, and thermal conductivity of ZrB2–SiC composites varied from 52·71 to 65·53 W (m K)?1 (ZrB2–SiCP), 54·30 to 71·55 W (m K)?1 (ZrB2–SiCC) and 64·25 to 88·02 W (m K)?1 (ZrB2–SiCH), respectively and also calculate the interfacial resistance of all the composites.  相似文献

The effects of the SiC nanowires (SiCNWs) and PyC interface layers on the mechanical and anti-oxidation properties of SiC fiber (SiCf)/SiC composites were investigated. To achieve this, the PyC layer was coated on the SiCf using a chemical vapour infiltration (CVI) method. Then, SiCNWs were successfully coated on the surface of SiCf/PyC using the electrophoretic deposition method. Finally, a thin PyC layer was coated on the surface of SiCf/PyC/SiCNWs. Three mini-composites, SiCf/PyC/SiC, SiCf/PyC/SiCNWs/SiC, and SiCf/PyC/SiCNWs/PyC/SiC, were fabricated using the typical precursor infiltration and pyrolysis method. The morphologies of the samples were examined using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. Tensile and single-fibre push-out tests were carried out to investigate the mechanical performance and interfacial shear strength of the composites before and after oxidization at 1200 °C. The results revealed that the SiCf/PyC/SiCNWs/SiC composites showed the best mechanical and anti-oxidation performance among all the composites investigated. The strengthening and toughening is mainly achieved by SiCNWs optimization of the interfacial bonding strength of the composite and its own nano-toughening. On the basis of the results, the effects of SiCNWs on the oxidation process and retardation mechanism of the SiCf/SiC mini-composites were investigated.  相似文献

SiCf/SiC composites with BN interface were prepared through isothermal-isobaric chemical vapour infiltration process. Room temperature mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural, inter-laminar shear strength and fracture toughness (KIC) were studied for the composites. The tensile strength of the SiCf/SiC composites with stabilised BN interface was almost 3.5 times higher than that of SiCf/SiC composites with un-stabilised BN interphase. The fracture toughness is similarly enhanced to 23 MPa m1/2 by stabilisation treatment. Fibre push-through test results showed that the interfacial bond strength between fibre and matrix for the composite with un-stabilised BN interface was too strong (>48 MPa) and it has been modified to a weaker bond (10 MPa) due to intermediate heat treatment. In the case of composite in which BN interface was subjected to thermal treatment soon after the interface coating, the interfacial bond strength between fibre and matrix was relatively stronger (29 MPa) and facilitated limited fibre pull-out.  相似文献

SiC fiber-reinforced SiC matrix (SiCf/SiC) composites are promising materials for high-temperature structural applications. In this study, KD-II SiC fiber bundles with a C/Si ratio of approximately 1.25 and an oxygen amount of 2.53%, were used as reinforcement. PyC interphase, PyC-SiC co-deposition interphase I and II, with different thicknesses, and SiC matrix were deposited into the SiC fiber bundles by using chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) to form SiCf/SiC mini composites. When the thickness of the interphase is approximately 1000 nm, the ultimate tensile stress and strain of SiCf/SiC mini composites with PyC-SiC co-deposition interphase I can reach 1120.0 MPa and 0.72%, respectively, which are significantly higher than those of SiCf/SiC mini composites with a PyC interphase (740.0 MPa, 0.87%) and PyC-SiC co-deposition interphase II (645.0 MPa, 0.54%). The effect of thicknesses and types of interphase on tensile fracture behavior of mini composites and then the fracture mechanism are discussed in detail.  相似文献

In this study, SiC nanowires (SiCNWS) were grown in situ on the surface of PyC interface through chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) to improve the mechanical characteristics and thermal conductivity of three-dimensional SiCf/SiC composites fabricated via precursor infiltration pyrolysis (PIP). The effect of SiCNWS on the properties of the obtained composites was investigated by comparing them with conventional SiCf/PyC/SiC composites. After the deposition of SiCNWS, the flexural strength of the SiCf/SiC composites was found to increase by 46 %, and the thermal conductivity showed an obvious increase at 25?1000 °C. The energy release of the composites in the damage evolution process was analysed by acoustic emission. The results indicated that the damage evolution process was delayed owing to the decrease in porosity, the crack deflection and bridging of the SiCNWS. Furthermore, the excellent thermal conductivity was attributed to the thermally conductive pathways formed by the SiCNWS in the dense structure.  相似文献

Unidirectional SiCf/SiC composites (UD SiCf/SiC composites) with excellent mechanical properties were successfully fabricated by a modified PIP method which involved the preparation of film-like matrix containing carbon layer with a low concentration PCS solution followed by the rapid densification of composites with a high concentration PCS solution. Carbon layers were in-situ formed and alternating with SiC layers in the as-received matrix. The unique microstructure endows the composites with appropriate interfacial bonding state, good load transfer ability of interphase and matrix and load bearing ability of fiber, and great crack deflection capacity, which ensures the synergy of high strength and toughness of composites. It is also found that the fiber volume fraction in the preform makes a non-negligible effect on the distribution of interphase and matrix, of which the reasonable adjustment can be utilized to optimize the mechanical properties of composites. Compared with the composites only using high concentration PCS solution, the UD SiCf/SiC composites prepared by the modified PIP method exhibit superior mechanical properties. Ultrahigh flexural strength of 1318.5 ± 158.3 MPa and fracture toughness of 47.6 ± 5.6 MPa·m1/2 were achieved at the fiber volume fraction of 30%.  相似文献

A fine study of the interfacial part in the silicon carbide fiber (SiCf) reinforced silicon carbide (SiC) composites was conducted by transmission electron microscopy. The boron nitride (BN) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were progressively coated on the SiCf by chemical vapor deposition method to form a hierarchical structure. Three composites with different interfaces, SiCf–CNTs/SiC, SiCf@BN/SiC, and SiCf@BN–CNTs/SiC, were fabricated by polymer infiltration and pyrolysis method. The interfaces and microstructures of the three composites were carefully characterized to investigate the improvement mechanism of strength and toughness. The results showed that BN could protect the surface of SiCf from corrosion and oxidation so that improved the possibility of debonding and pullout. CNTs could avoid the propagation of cracks in the composites so that improved the damage resistance of the matrix. The synergistic reinforcement brought by BN and CNTs interfaces made the SiCf@BN–CNTs/SiC composites with a tensile fracture strength as high as 359 MPa, with an improvement of 23% compared to that of SiCf@BN/SiC.  相似文献

A new approach to improve the interfacial matching of carbon fiber-reinforced lithium-aluminum-silicon(Cf/LAS) composites is proposed, which is achieved by Ni nanoparticles catalyzing the formation of a tunable graphite layer on the surface of Cf. The interfacial structure between the composites can be effectively improved by tuning parameters such as Ni2+ content and sintering holding time, and ultimately, the mechanical properties of the composites can be improved. Interestingly, due to the introduction of Ni2+, a yolk-shell type graphite layer is formed between the Cf and LAS, and the bridging effect of the graphite layer improves interfacial bonding. The highest flexural strength (515 ± 30 MPa) and fracture toughness (14.7 ± 1.6 MPa·m1/2) were obtained. Taking Cf/LAS as an example, the relationship between interfacial matching and mechanical properties of composites is systematically investigated and may provide a new idea for the improvement of mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced composites.  相似文献
