A handwritten Chinese character recognition method based on primitive and compound fuzzy features using the SEART neural network model is proposed. The primitive features are extracted in local and global view. Since handwritten Chinese characters vary a great deal, the fuzzy concept is used to extract the compound features in structural view. We combine the two categories of features and use a fast classifier, called the Supervised Extended ART (SEART) neural network model, to recognize handwritten Chinese characters. The SEART classifier has excellent performance, is fast, and has good generalization and exception handling abilities in complex problems. Using the fuzzy set theory in feature extraction and the neural network model as a classifier is helpful for reducing distortions, noise and variations. In spite of the poor thinning, a 90.24% recognition rate on average for the 605 test character categories was obtained. The database used is CCL/HCCR3 (provided by CCL, ITRI, Taiwan). The experiment not only confirms the feasibility of the proposed system, but also suggests that applying the fuzzy set theory and neural networks to recognition of handwritten Chinese characters is an efficient and promising approach.  相似文献

A Fuzzy ARTMAP classifier for pattern recognition in chemical sensor array was developed based on Fuzzy Set Theory and Adaptive Resonance Theory. In contrast to most current classifiers with difficulty in detecting new analytes, the Fuzzy ARTMAP system can identify untrained analytes with comparatively high probability. And to detect presence of new analyte, the Fuzzy ARTMAP classifier does not need retraining process that is necessary for most traditional neural network classifiers. In this study, principal component analysis (PCA) was first implemented for feature extraction purpose, followed by pattern recognition using Fuzzy ARTMAP classifiers. To construct the classifier with high recognition rate, parameter sensitive analysis was applied to find critical factors and Pareto optimization was used to locate the optimum parameter setting for the classifier. The test result shows that the proposed method can not only maintain satisfactory correct classification rate for trained analytes, but also be able to detect untrained analytes at a high recognition rate. Also the Pareto optimal values of the most important parameter have been identified, which could help constructing Fuzzy ARTMAP classifiers with good classification performance in future application.  相似文献

A new architecture called muARTMAP is proposed to impact a category proliferation problem present in Fuzzy ARTMAP. Under a probabilistic setting, it seeks a partition of the input space that optimizes the mutual information with the output space, but allowing some training error, thus avoiding overfitting. It implements an inter-ART reset mechanism that permits handling exceptions correctly, thus using few categories, especially in high dimensionality problems. It compares favorably to Fuzzy ARTMAP and Boosted ARTMAP in several synthetic benchmarks, being more robust to noise than Fuzzy ARTMAP and degrading less as dimensionality increases. Evaluated on a real-world task, the recognition of handwritten characters, it performs comparably to Fuzzy ARTMAP, while generating a much more compact rule set.  相似文献

This paper considers the development of a real-time Arabic handwritten character recognition system. The shape of an Arabic character depends on its position in a given word. The system assumes that characters result from a reliable segmentation stage, thus, the position of the character is known a priori. Thus, four different sets of character shapes have been independently considered. Each set is further divided into four subsets depending on the number of strokes in the character. The system has been heavily tested and the average recognition rate has been found to be 99.6% where most of the misrecognized characters were actually written with little care. Thus, the system can be reliably used for the recognition of on-line handwritten characters entered via a graphic tablet.  相似文献

Handwriting recognition requires tools and techniques that recognize complex character patterns and represent imprecise, common-sense knowledge about the general appearance of characters, words and phrases. Neural networks and fuzzy logic are complementary tools for solving such problems. Neural networks, which are highly nonlinear and highly interconnected for processing imprecise information, can finely approximate complicated decision boundaries. Fuzzy set methods can represent degrees of truth or belonging. Fuzzy logic encodes imprecise knowledge and naturally maintains multiple hypotheses that result from the uncertainty and vagueness inherent in real problems. By combining the complementary strengths of neural and fuzzy approaches into a hybrid system, we can attain an increased recognition capability for solving handwriting recognition problems. This article describes the application of neural and fuzzy methods to three problems: recognition of handwritten words; recognition of numeric fields; and location of handwritten street numbers in address images  相似文献

An automatic off-line character recognition system for handwritten cursive Arabic characters is presented. A robust noise-independent algorithm is developed that yields skeletons that reflect the structural relationships of the character components. The character skeleton is converted to a tree structure suitable for recognition. A set of fuzzy constrained character graph models (FCCGM's), which tolerate large variability in writing, is designed. These models are graphs, with fuzzily labeled arcs used as prototypes for the characters. A set of rules is applied in sequence to match a character tree to an FCCGM. Arabic handwritings of four writers were used in the learning and testing stages. The system proved to be powerful in tolerance to variable writing, speed, and recognition rate  相似文献

Previous handwritten numeral recognition algorithms applied structural classification to extract geometric primitives that characterize each image, and then utilized artificial intelligence methods, like neural network or fuzzy memberships, to classify the images. We propose a handwritten numeral recognition methodology based on simplified structural classification, by using a much smaller set of primitive types, and fuzzy memberships. More specifically, based on three kinds of feature points, we first extract five kinds of primitive segments for each image. A fuzzy membership function is then used to estimate the likelihood of these primitives being close to the two vertical boundaries of the image. Finally, a tree-like classifier based on the extracted feature points, primitives and fuzzy memberships is applied to classify the numerals. With our system, handwritten numerals in NIST Special Database 19 are recognized with correct rate between 87.33% and 88.72%.  相似文献

Handwritten digit recognition has long been a challenging problem in the field of optical character recognition and of great importance in industry. This paper develops a new approach for handwritten digit recognition that uses a small number of patterns for training phase. To improve performance of isolated Farsi/Arabic handwritten digit recognition, we use Bag of Visual Words (BoVW) technique to construct images feature vectors. Each visual word is described by Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) method. For learning feature vectors, Quantum Neural Networks (QNN) classifier is used. Experimental results on a very popular Farsi/Arabic handwritten digit dataset (HODA dataset) show that proposed method can achieve the highest recognition rate compared to other state of the arts methods.  相似文献

This research examines a variety of approaches for using two-dimensional orthogonal polynomials for the recognition of handwritten Arabic numerals. It also makes use of parametric and non-parametric statistical and neural network classifiers. Polynomials, including Legendre, Zernike, and pseudo-Zernike, are used to generate moment-based features which are invariant to location, size, and (optionally) rotation. An efficient method for computing the moments via geometric moments is presented. A side effect of this method also yields scale invariance. A new approach to location invariance using a minimum bounding circle is presented, and a detailed analysis of the rotational properties of the moments is given. Data partitioning tests are performed to evaluate the various feature types and classifiers. For rotational invariant character recognition, the highest percentage of correctly classified characters was 91.7%, and for non-rotational invariant recognition it was 97.6%. This compares with a previous effort, using the same data and test conditions, of 94.8%. The techniques developed here should also be applicable to other areas of shape recognition  相似文献

A stroke-based approach to extract skeletons and structural features for handwritten Chinese character recognition is proposed. We first determine stroke directions based on the directional run-length information of binary character patterns. According to the stroke directions and their adjacent relationships, we split strokes into stroke and fork segments, and then extract the skeletons of the stroke segments called skeleton segments. After all skeleton segments are extracted, fork segments are processed to find the fork points and fork degrees. Skeleton segments that touch a fork segment are connected at the fork point, and all connected skeleton segments form the character skeleton. According to the extracted skeletons and fork points, we can extract primitive strokes and stroke direction maps for recognition. A simple classifier based on the stroke direction map is presented to recognize regular and rotated characters to verify the ability of the proposed feature extraction for handwritten Chinese character recognition. Several experiments are carried out, and the experimental results show that the proposed approach can easily and effectively extract skeletons and structural features, and works well for handwritten Chinese character recognition.  相似文献

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is the process of recognizing printed or handwritten text on paper documents. This paper proposes an OCR system for Arabic characters. In addition to the preprocessing phase, the proposed recognition system consists mainly of three phases. In the first phase, we employ word segmentation to extract characters. In the second phase, Histograms of Oriented Gradient (HOG) are used for feature extraction. The final phase employs Support Vector Machine (SVM) for classifying characters. We have applied the proposed method for the recognition of Jordanian city, town, and village names as a case study, in addition to many other words that offers the characters shapes that are not covered with Jordan cites. The set has carefully been selected to include every Arabic character in its all four forms. To this end, we have built our own dataset consisting of more than 43.000 handwritten Arabic words (30000 used in the training stage and 13000 used in the testing stage). Experimental results showed a great success of our recognition method compared to the state of the art techniques, where we could achieve very high recognition rates exceeding 99%.  相似文献

Automated techniques for Arabic content recognition are at a beginning period contrasted with their partners for the Latin and Chinese contents recognition. There is a bulk of handwritten Arabic archives available in libraries, data centers, historical centers, and workplaces. Digitization of these documents facilitates (1) to preserve and transfer the country’s history electronically, (2) to save the physical storage space, (3) to proper handling of the documents, and (4) to enhance the retrieval of information through the Internet and other mediums. Arabic handwritten character recognition (AHCR) systems face several challenges including the unlimited variations in human handwriting and the leakage of large and public databases. In the current study, the segmentation and recognition phases are addressed. The text segmentation challenges and a set of solutions for each challenge are presented. The convolutional neural network (CNN), deep learning approach, is used in the recognition phase. The usage of CNN leads to significant improvements across different machine learning classification algorithms. It facilitates the automatic feature extraction of images. 14 different native CNN architectures are proposed after a set of try-and-error trials. They are trained and tested on the HMBD database that contains 54,115 of the handwritten Arabic characters. Experiments are performed on the native CNN architectures and the best-reported testing accuracy is 91.96%. A transfer learning (TF) and genetic algorithm (GA) approach named “HMB-AHCR-DLGA” is suggested to optimize the training parameters and hyperparameters in the recognition phase. The pre-trained CNN models (VGG16, VGG19, and MobileNetV2) are used in the later approach. Five optimization experiments are performed and the best combinations are reported. The highest reported testing accuracy is 92.88%.
