Oxidative stress related diseases often arise from over production of free radicals and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species. The prevention of these diseases could be possible with the use of natural antioxidant plants that could be promising as therapeutic candidates. Since antioxidant properties of a species could be stem from phenolic compounds, it is, therefore, important to evaluate antioxidant and total/individual phenolic and flavonoid content. For this purpose, we evaluated antioxidant properties of ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) based on three parameters: the antioxidant capacity, total phenolic and flavonoid content as well as identification of phenolic acids of water extract (WEG) and ethanol extract (EEG) of ginger. For antioxidant capacity, we performed FRAP, CUPRAC assay, Fe2+ chelating ability, DPPH and DMPD radical scavenging activities. Also, total phenolic and flavonoid contents in both extracts were also measured via Folin Ciocalteu’s method. For identification of phenolic acids, HPLC-MS/MS method was performed. The results showed that EEG had generally better antioxidant activity than WEG in all assays. HPLC-MS/MS analysis showed that there are at least eight different phenolic acids found in ginger, among which pyrogallol p-hydroxybenzoic acid, ferulic acid and p-coumaric acid were more abundant in both extracts. This study clearly showed that ginger extracts demonstrated effective antioxidant properties and their consumption may reduce or delay the progression of diseases that oxidative stress take place due to lack of antioxidant supplementation.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the antioxidant potency and total phenolic and flavonoid contents of kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) in vitro by analysing the radical scavenging activity of lyophilised water extract from kiwifruit (LEK) for 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH), N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine (DMPD), and superoxide anion radical (O2) as well as the total reducing power by FRAP and CUPRAC assays and the metal chelating activities. LEK showed efficient radical scavenging activity with DPPH, ABTS, DMPD, and O2 radicals; ferric (Fe3+) and cupric (Cu2+) ion reducing power and metal chelating activities. Moreover, the amounts of phenolic compounds, such as caffeic acid, ferulic acid, syringic acid, ellagic acid, catechol, pyrogallol, p-hydroxy benzoic acid, vanillin, p-coumaric acid, gallic acid, quercetin, ??-tocopherol and ascorbic acid, in LEK were quantified by LC-MS-MS. The results show that pyrogallol (2070.0 mg/kg LEK) is the main phenolic compound responsible for the antioxidant and radical scavenging activities of LEK. Finally, total phenolic and flavonoid contents were determined as gallic acid (GAE) and quercetin equivalents (QE). The GAE and QE values in LEK were 16.67 ± 2.83 ??g GAE/mg and 12.95 ± 0.52 ??g QE/mg, respectively. The results suggest that consumption of kiwifruit (A. deliciosa) can be beneficial effects due to its antioxidant properties.  相似文献

Lactic-fermented cabbage, similar to Kimchi in Korea, is a very popular fermented vegetable product in Taiwan and China. In this study, fermented cabbage prepared by a dry-salt method was first extracted with water and methanol. Antioxidant activity such as DPPH radical scavenging effects, reducing power and Fe2+-chelating ability of the solvent extracts of fermented cabbage was determined and the effect of fermentation on the change of antioxidant activity, total phenolic and total flavonoid content was also investigated. Results revealed that antioxidant activity observed on the Chinese cabbage mixture may vary with extraction solvents and fermentation. Generally, the methanol extract of the cabbage mixture showed a higher DPPH radical scavenging activity and reducing activity than the water extract. Although, fermentation did not alter the Fe2+-chelating ability and reducing activity of the methanol extract of the cabbage mixture, it reduced these same antioxidant activities in the water extract. Amongst the various extracts examined, the methanol extract of fermented cabbage showed the highest DPPH radical scavenging effect. On the other hand, the highest Fe2+-ion chelating and reducing activities were exerted by the methanol extracts of both the cabbage mixture and the fermented cabbage, which showed no significant difference (p < 0.05). Additionally, the type of solvent and fermentation were also found to affect the total phenolic and flavonoid content of the extracts. Fermentation increased the total phenolic content of the methanol extract, whilst reducing the total flavonoid content of the water extract. Furthermore, changes in the antioxidant activity observed on the extracts of the cabbage mixture and fermented cabbage did not coincide exactly with the total phenolic and total flavonoid content.  相似文献

In this study, phenolic compounds in their phenolic extract (PE), free phenolic (FP), esterified phenolic (EFP), and insoluble bound phenolic (ISBP) forms were extracted from tea seeds and quantified using HPLC to obtain information on the phenolics that are present in tea seeds along with their antioxidant activities. The total phenolic content of the ISBP fraction was higher than that of the FP and EFP fractions. The phenolic acids in tea seeds exist either in esterified or glycosided forms. Moreover, hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives have been identified as important phenolic acid components in tea seeds. The ISBP fraction was an effective antioxidant based on the results obtained from the in vitro assays performed, which include the DPPH and 2,2-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)-derived nitrogen-centered radical scavenging activities, Fe3+-2,4,6-tripyridyl-s-triazine reducing ability, as well as Cu2+ and Fe2+ ion chelating effects.  相似文献

The phenolic composition in dried Myrica rubra fruits, leaves and bark were investigated for evaluation of its contribution to the antioxidant activity. The fruits, leaves and bark have the abundant phenolic compounds with the total phenolic content of 0.673, 0.276 and 0.136 mg/g (GA equivalents/FW), respectively. Ten phenolic compounds were isolated and identified in methanol extracts of Myrica rubra fruits by GC–MS analysis. Less phenolic compounds were found in leaves and bark than in fruits. However, the leaves and bark contain much higher concentrations of the trans-resveratrol over 100 μg/g than in fruits. The total antioxidant activities against the ·DPPH radical of those three samples were 0.438, 0.184 and 0.092 mg/g (Trolox equivalents/FW), respectively. The quantitative results indicated that a good correlation between the total antioxidant activity, total phenolic contents, and abundance of individual phenolic compound in Myrica rubra plants.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the reducing power, metal chelating, and radical scavenging capabilities of water and ethanol extracts of sumac (Rhus coriaria L.), comparatively. The water and ethanol extracts of sumac were evaluated for their radical scavenging activities by means of the DPPH and DMPD assays. Water extract of sumac (R. coriaria L.) scavenged radicals effectively with EC50 values of 36.4 ??g/ml for DPPH free radical and 44.7 ??g/ml for DMPD cation radical. Similarly, the total reducing power of water extract was found higher than ethanol extract in both potassium ferricyanide reduction (FRAP) and cupric ions reduction capacity methods (CUPRAC). 2,2′-Bipyridine was used to determine the metal chelating activity and the result of water extract was found higher than ethanol extract. Total phenolic and total flavonoid contents of both extracts were studied as well. The values of water extract were found to be higher than that of ethanol extract. The present study found that water extracts of sumac (R. coriaria L.) have effective antioxidant and radical scavenging activities as compared to ethanol extracts.  相似文献

The beneficial health effects including antioxidant properties of mint (Mentha spicata) and honey have been extensively studied. However, there is no data about the effect of their associated use. In this study the total phenolic and flavonoid contents of individual extracts of mint and honey and their combination were determined. The antioxidant activity was investigated by using reducing power, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2´-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid diammonium salt (ABTS), and chelating power methods. The results showed that individual extracts contained important quantity of phenolics and flavonoids and their combination was found to produce best antioxidant activity. A positive correlation between the phenolic/flavonoid contents and antioxidant activity, especially with free radical scavenging ability and chelating power, was observed. These findings suggest that combined mixture of honey and mint could be used as promising additive foods.  相似文献

Pawpaw (Asimina triloba [L.] Dunal) possesses antioxidant compounds and strong inhibitors of cancer cells, and is widely cultivated in North America, Canada, and Korea. We analyzed the total phenolic and total flavonoid contents (TPC and TFC, respectively) of pawpaw plants grown in Korea and the antioxidant activities of their roots, twigs, leaves, and fruit with respect to 1,1‐diphenyl‐2‐picryl‐hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, 2,2′‐azino‐bis diammonium salt (ABTS) radical scavenging activity, ferrous (Fe2+) chelating ability, and nitrite scavenging activity. Pearson's correlation analyses revealed a linear correlation between TPC and antioxidant activities (r2 >0.69). Root methanol extracts had higher TPC and antioxidant activities than other extracts, which was also consistent with those from the phenolic compounds found in those extracts. Therefore, antioxidant activities seem to depend on the TPC of each pawpaw tissue and pawpaw roots might be useful as a natural source of natural antioxidants.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the changes in the total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activities of 80% methanol and water extracts from mustard leaf kimchi during different fermentation periods. The methanol extract exhibited higher TPC and TFC than the water extract. Both extracts from kimchi fermented for two months showed the highest antioxidant effects against the scavenging activities of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radicals and 2,2-azino-bis diammonium salt (ABTS) radicals. Moreover, the methanol extract from kimchi fermented for two months showed the highest nitrite scavenging activity. The highest metal (Fe2+) chelating effect of the methanol extract and water extract was observed after three months and one month, respectively. Caffeic acid showed the highest increase with fermentation. These findings suggest that the antioxidant activities of kimchi depend on the fermentation period. Accordingly, this study provides basic data for improving the antioxidant activity of mustard leaf kimchi through the establishment of their fermentation period.  相似文献

Agaricus brasiliensis is a mushroom native from Brazil largely studied due to its polysaccharide contents, particularly β-glucans. In this study, the phenolics and organic acids contents as well as the antioxidant activities of its fruiting bodies and its mycelia obtained from submerged cultivation were compared. The hydroalcoholic extracts obtained from the fruiting bodies, early stationary mycelia and late stationary mycelia contain at least ten phenolic compounds and ten organic acids. Three phenolic compounds were identified as gallic acid, syringic acid and pyrogallol. Eight organic acids were identified as benzoic, oxalic, malic, acetic, alpha-ketoglutaric, citric, fumaric and trans-aconitic acids. All extracts presented antioxidant properties. The latter were evaluated by four assays: DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities, chelating ability for ferrous ions and inhibition of lipid peroxidation. The fruiting body extracts were more effective in the DPPH radical scavenging activity and lipid peroxidation inhibition that the mycelia extracts (P ≤ 0.05). The mycelia extracts were more effective in the ABTS radical scavenging activity and ferrous ion chelating ability (P ≤ 0.05). In conclusion, our results show that the mycelia of A. brasiliensis obtained in submerged cultivation can also be, as its fruiting bodies, valuable sources of antioxidant compounds.  相似文献

The in vitro antioxidant properties of methanol and aqueous extracts of stem bark from Pittosporum dasycaulon Miq. were investigated. Fractions were screened for total antioxidant capacity, ferric reducing power, and radical scavenging activities. The total phenolic, flavonoid, and tannin contents of the methanol and aqueous extracts were also determined. The aqueous extract exhibited a stronger scavenging effect than the methanol extract against the DPPH free radical, the nitric oxide radical, and the superoxide radical. The methanol extract exhibited a stronger total antioxidant activity and reducing power than the aqueous extract. The free radical scavenging effect of P. dasycaulon stem bark extracts was comparable to an ascorbic acid reference antioxidant while the reducing power of the methanol extract was greater than ascorbic acid. P. dasycaulon stem bark is a potential source of natural antioxidant compounds.  相似文献

The antioxidant capacity of commonly consumed cucurbits vegetable was determined by the DPPH, FRAP, Fe3+ reducing power, and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay. The aqueous extract of Luffa cylindrica showed the highest value of phenolic content and antioxidant capacity based on FRAP, Fe3+ reducing power, and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay. However, Laginaria siceraria extract showed the highest flavonoid and DPPH scavenging activities among all three cucurbits used in this study. Phenolic content in aqueous extracts of Luffa cylindrica and Laginaria siceraria was almost equal. Cucurbita maxima exhibited the lowest phenolic, flavonoid content, and exhibited the lowest power of antioxidant scavenging. The antioxidant capacity of cucurbits was significantly correlated (P < 0.05) with the phenolic content of their extracts. The antioxidant capacity of Luffa cylindrica and Laginaria siceraria have also shown a significant correlation (P < 0.05).  相似文献

In this study, powders of steamed black soybeans and the Aspergillus awamori‐fermented black soybeans (koji) were subjected to storage at 4 °C and 25 °C with or without deoxidant and desiccant for 120 days. It was found that total phenolic content and the antioxidant activity including the DPPH radicals scavenging effect, Fe2+‐chelating ability and reducing activity of the methanol extracts from black soybeans and koji decreased as the storage period was extended. Furthermore, storage temperature and packaging condition affected the antioxidant activity of the methanol extracts of black soybeans and koji. After 120‐day storage, extract from black soybeans holding at 4 °C with deoxidant and desiccant exhibited the highest residual of DPPH radicals scavenging effect, Fe2+‐chelating ability and reducing activity of 71.78%, 72.66% and 70.04%, respectively. Meanwhile, the highest residual of 77.78%, 81.71% and 85.05% respectively, was noted with extract from koji held at 25 °C with deoxidant and desiccant.  相似文献

The antioxidant activity of chloroform and methanol extract of roots and stems of Rhubarb (Rheum ribes L.), which are used for medicinal purposes and also its fresh stems and petioles are consumed as vegetable, was studied. The antioxidant potential of both extracts of roots and stems were evaluated using different antioxidant tests, namely total antioxidant (lipid peroxidation inhibition activity), DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging, superoxide anion radical scavenging, ferric reducing power, and cupric reducing power (CUPRAC), and metal chelating activities. Total antioxidant activity was also measured according to the β-carotene bleaching method, and all four extracts exhibited stronger activity than known standards, namely butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and α-tocopherol. Particularly, higher activity was exhibited by roots with 93.1% and 84.1% inhibitions of chloroform and methanol extracts, while 82.2% and 82.0% inhibitions by stem extracts, respectively. However, both methanol extracts exhibited higher DPPH radical scavenging activity than the corresponding chloroform extracts, moreover, methanol extract of the stems showed better activity than BHT. In addition, both root extracts showed more potent superoxide anion radical scavenging activity than BHT, and comparable with well known radical scavenger l-ascorbic acid. Except chloroform extract of the roots, the other three extracts exhibited better metal chelating activity than quercetin. Also, total phenolic and flavonoid contents in both extracts of the roots and stems of R. ribes were determined as pyrocatechol and quercetin equivalents, respectively.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and antiradical properties of Maillard reaction products (MRP) in both aqueous and ethanolic fructoseglycine oligomer solutions. Antioxidant and radical scavenging activities of MRPs were investigated using different in vitro assays: the ferric ion (Fe3+) reducing ability, cupric ion (Cu2+), ferrous ion (Fe2+) chelating effects, DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities, and Fe3+-TPTZ reducing ability. MRPs derived from fructose-diglycine (GG) were found to be effective antioxidants in different in vitro assays. The antioxidant activity was higher in ethanolic solutions than in aqueous MRP solutions.  相似文献

Walnut antioxidant peptides and phenolic compounds (POHs) commonly coexist in walnut protein hydrolysates (WPHs). However, the peptide–phenolic interaction and its effects on antioxidant activities of WPHs remain unknown. Fluorescence and dynamic light scattering were used to study the peptide–phenolic interaction in WPH‐POH mixtures (W‐P) with different POH/WPH ratios; antioxidant abilities of POH only solution, WPH only solution and W‐P were measured with three assays: DPPH radical scavenging, Fe2+ chelation and linoleic acid peroxidation inhibition. Results showed that initially POHs bonded to hydrophobic sites of peptides; subsequently, when POH/WPH ratio exceeded 1:120 (w/w), POHs changed the conformation and average particle size of peptides. Their interaction could at most increase WPHs’ capability in scavenging DPPH radical (44.9%), chelating Fe2+ (36.1%) and inhibiting linoleic acid oxidation (87.5%) at the POH/WPH ratio (w/w) point of 1:12. This research offered a guidance in the production of WPHs with high functionality.  相似文献

The aroma generating volatile components profile and in vitro antioxidant capacities of different aromatic rice cultivars was determined by GC–MS analysis and in terms of DPPH scavenging activity, lipid peroxidation inhibition, phosphomolybdenum reduction and reducing power assay. The total phenolic content including both free and bound forms in the analyzed aromatic rice cultivars, Mushki budgi (1.62 mg GAE/g), Mushki kandi (1.63 mg GAE/g) and Kamad (1.60 mg GAE/g) were found double the amount as compared to non-aromatic Koshkari (0.86 mg GAE/g) cultivar. The aromatic rice cultivars had also shown higher total flavonoid content and antioxidant activity than non-aromatic rice cultivar (Koshkari). The GC–MS results indicated 21-aromatic compounds present in sufficient quantities in aromatic cultivars and some of them were unique to these cultivars. Among the compounds identified, aldehydes were found in higher quantity followed by alkanes, ketones and esters. Among the aromatic rice cultivars, Mushki budgi and Mushki kandi were found possessing higher quantity of flavoring components such as benzaldehyde, a carcinostatic agent. The cultivars Mushki budgi and Mushki kandi indicated positive correlation of TPC, TFC and the in vitro antioxidant components largely, while the less aromatic Kamad, correlate with only two components viz DPPH and lipid peroxidation.  相似文献

This study aimed to identify the effects of soaking time and fermentation temperature and period on the total phenolics, total flavonoids, and antioxidant activity of maesil extract. Green maesil fruits were fermented with brown sugar at 15 or 25°C for one year. After soaking maesil for 90 days, the fruits were removed and the remaining liquid was further ripened for 275 days, whereas other samples continued to ferment with maesil until 365 days. Total phenolics, total flavonoids, and antioxidant activities of the extracts fermented with maesil for one year were higher compared with those wherein the fruits were removed at day 90. The total phenolic and total flavonoid contents were relatively higher at 15°C, whereas the ABTS and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) activities were significantly higher at 25°C. The total phenolic and total flavonoid contents highly correlated with the antioxidant activities. These results show that fermentation temperature plays a critical role in enhancing the phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of maesil extract.  相似文献

The antioxidative properties and total phenolic contents of raw and dry heated seed coat of Tamarindus indica were examined. The raw and dry heated samples were extracted with methanol followed by 70% acetone, after treating with petroleum ether, solvents were removed using rotary vacuum evaporator and the extracts which contain residual moisture were freeze-dried, respectively. Methanol extracts for both raw and dry heated seed coat samples contained higher level of total phenolics and tannins than the aqueous acetone extracts. The extracts were screened for their potential antioxidant activities using such as O2, OH, α,α-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ABTS+, FRAP and linoleic acid emulsion model systems. At different concentration of respective solvent extracts, the maximum level of superoxide anion radical scavenging activity (79-85%) was observed at 200 μg of both the raw and dry heated seed coat extracts in the reaction mixture. The DPPH radical and ABTS cation radical scavenging activities were well proved with the ferric reducing antioxidant capacity of the extracts. Interestingly, among the extracts, methanol and aqueous acetone extracts of dry heated sample showed the highest hydroxyl radical scavenging activity of 56.6 and 45.7%, respectively. All extracts, exhibited good antioxidant activity (64.5-71.7%) against the linoleic acid emulsion system and the values were lower and higher than the synthetic antioxdiant, BHA and ascorbic acid, respectively.  相似文献

Acetone and methanol extracts of the fruits of Pistacia terebinthus L. subsp. terebinthus L. were studied for their antioxidant activity by investigating their total phenolic and flavonoid contents, β-carotene bleaching potential, DPPH radical scavenging effect, scavenging activity on superoxide anion radical, reducing power, and metal chelating effect on ferrous ion. Both extracts showed very similar chemical profile by checking on TLC plates, and exhibited high scavenging activity on superoxide anion radical and DPPH radical. Due to these similarities they were combined and fractionated on a silica gel column for their constituents, and the most active three fractions in DPPH assay were purified to afford a new flavone 6′-hydroxyhypolaetin 3′-methyl ether (1) besides a group of known flavonoids apigenin, luteolin, luteolin 7-O-glucoside, quercetin, quercetagetin 3-methyl ether 7-O-glucoside, isoscutellarein 8-O-glucoside. Their structures were established by UV, UV shift reagents, and 1H NMR spectroscopic techniques. Antioxidant activity of the new flavone was investigated by β-carotene bleaching and DPPH radical scavenging activity methods, and it showed a high activity in the first system, but not so good in the latter.  相似文献
