The importance of photoperiod and ambient temperature on the accumulation of cadmium in the liver and kidneys of bank voles was determined in the present study. Males and females, aged 1 month, were given 3.0 micrograms Cd ml-1 drinking water and divided into four groups according to photoperiod (16 h light/8 h dark and 8 h light/16 h dark) and ambient temperature (20 or 5 degrees C); liver and kidneys were removed for cadmium as well as copper, iron and zinc analyses at the end of 6 weeks. Bank voles exposed to 5 degrees C in both photoperiods consumed approximately 30% less water containing cadmium than those kept at 20 degrees C. However, the total accumulation of cadmium in the liver and kidneys of males and females exposed to the low temperatures was 4.3-4.8 and 2.2-3.3 times less than that in animals maintained at room temperature in the long and short photoperiod, respectively. Simultaneously, the low temperature brought about an increase in the copper concentrations in the liver (12-43%) and kidneys (47-78%), giving rise to an inverse correlation between the cadmium accumulation and the tissue copper concentration. In contrast to cadmium and copper, the concentrations of iron and zinc were affected primarily by photoperiod. These findings indicate that ambient temperature is an important determinant of cadmium retention in the bank vole. It appears that low temperature decreases tissue cadmium accumulation not only by reducing cadmium intake but also through changes in copper metabolism.  相似文献

Sex differences in rotational behavior have been most clearly established in laboratory rats with females exhibiting a turning bias. Here, using an automated open-field apparatus, locomotor activity and spontaneous rotational behavior were examined in diurnally crepuscularly active reproductive male and female meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus). Meadow voles, being induced ovulators, permitted analysis of females in constant behavioral estrous. Males displayed significantly greater levels of activity and also significantly greater levels of clockwise but not counterclockwise rotational behavior relative to the females. Rotational behavior was less strongly related to activity levels in female as compared to male voles. In addition, females displayed an overall turning bias. These results contrast with findings from laboratory rats in which females are reported to display greater levels of both locomotor activity and rotational behavior. They are, however, consistent with the rotational bias evident in female rats. The present findings confirm the presence of sex differences in rotational behavior and indicate that factors other than activity levels are involved in the generation and/or expression of these sex differences. Sex differences in anxiety and routine-like behavior (i.e., asymmetry in movement) are discussed as possible factors contributing to these male-female differences in rotational behavior.  相似文献

The role of estrogen and progesterone in the regulation of reproductive behavior was studied in female ring doves (Streptopelia risoria) under long vs. short photoperiods. The doves held under long (16 hours/day) or short (8 hours/day) photoperiods were treated for 15 days with saline, estrogen, or progesterone, alone or in combination. 7 days after the start of hormone therapy, the doves were placed with reproductively active males for 4 hours/day for 9 days. No difference was seen in egg-laying, courtship or nest-building by control birds under the 2 photo regimes. Ovarian follicles remained small in all doves receiving hormone treatment. Oviducts of doves receiving progesterone alone remained small in the short-photoperiod group but at long photoperiods the oviducts became enlarged. Estrogen stimulated oviduct growth at both photoperiods wheras the combined hormone treatment resulted in greater oviduct development than estrogen alone (p less than .02). Female soliciting and nest-building activity remained low in progesterone-treated doves under short photoperiod but increased rapidly under long photoperiod. Doves treated with estrogen and estrogen plus progesterone performed considerable soliciting and nest-building. No marked tendency was seen for doves under long-photoperiod conditions to be more active in nest-oriented behavior. Copulatory behavior by the female occurred infrequently in all hormone-treated doves.  相似文献

The effects of sex and experimental androgenization on the responsiveness of food intake and running-wheel activity to exogenously administered ovarian hormones were investigated in adult, gonadectomized rats. Food intake was found to be analogous to lordotic behavior in that males and neonatally androgenized females were relatively insensitive to the influences of either estradiol benzoate (EB) or progesterone (P). Running-wheel activity, however, could be differentiated from food intake in that males responded the same as females to the effects of EB and P. Androgenized females (500-mug testosterone propionate on the third day of life) showed a response to EB quantitatively equivalent to that of nonandrogenized females, but they had a longer latency to respond. The estrogen-antagonistic effects of P were confirmed for both of these behaviors, and there was a positive correlation between the magnitude of the responses to EB and P.  相似文献

In Experiment 1, individually housed male meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) and prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) were injected with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and exhibited the expected decrease in testosterone and increase in corticosterone and interleukin- 1β concentrations 3 hr later, indicating activation of the endocrine and immune systems. In Experiment 2, LPS- and saline-injected males were tethered in a 3-chamber partner preference apparatus. The time females spent in each chamber with a male, as well as the amount of time spent in social contact, was monitored. Female prairie voles, but not meadow voles, spent more time in the chamber with saline- than with LPS-injected males. LPS-injected male prairie and meadow voles engaged in less social contact with female conspecifics than did saline-injected males. These data suggest that LPS modifies physiology and behavior in male voles and that females may use these changes to discriminate healthy from potentially infected males. Nonmonogamous meadow voles, which exhibit seasonal changes in social organization (long day [LD] females are territorial, short day [SD] females live socially), provide a model for examining whether central oxytocin (OT) receptor patterns are associated with seasonal changes in intraspecific social behaviors. This study examined whether sexually inexperienced (naive) SD females had more OT receptor binding than naive LD females. Naive SD females had greater OT receptor binding in the lateral septum (LS), lateral amygdala (LatAmyg), and central amygdala, (CenAmyg) than less social, naive LD females. Because both SD and LD females acquire partner preferences, the association of OT receptor binding with partner preference onset was assessed. For LD females, partner preference onset corresponded with greater OT receptor binding in the anterior olfactory nucleus, LS, and bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, compared with naive LD females. Naive SD females and those exhibiting partner preferences did not differ, but those that failed to acquire partner preferences showed less OT binding in the LatAmyg and CenAmyg. Results show that OT receptor patterns are associated with seasonal changes in intraspecific social organization and partner preference onset in a nonmonogamous rodent. In the male lesser mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus), a polygamous long-day breeder of which the life span may reach 12-14 years, the effects of aging on socio-sexual relationships were studied on 44 captive animals of various ages. In this primate, new dominance relationships must be established at the beginning of each breeding season. During the breeding season induced by exposure to artificial long days, preoestrous females were introduced into cages of paired males to elicit sexual competition. Sexual behaviors, social interactions through chemical signals, and dominance relationships were recorded in paired males either of similar age (young or aged pairs), or of mixed ages. In all pairs, competition for priority access to females always occurred and dominance relationships were established unrelated to body weight. Although aged animals exhibited significantly less number of sexual and aggressive behaviors, they outranked younger males excepted when reaching oldest age. Independent of male's age, the typical pattern of seasonal rhythm of testosterone was observed, but aged males demonstrated a significant reduction in mean hormonal levels (25.5 +/- 2.8 ng/mL, n = 8) compared to young animals (50 +/- 2.7 ng/mL, n = 8). Moreover, their hormonal response to photoperiod was phase-shifted leading to reduced testosterone values when females entered oestrus. Despite the fact that testosterone levels and sexual behaviors decreased with aging in this primate, older males reached a dominant position, increasing thus their reproductive success.  相似文献

The effects of perinatal and postweaning photoperiods on subsequent affective behaviors were examined in adult Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus). Hamsters exposed perinatally to short days (8 hr light/day) exhibited mixed results for adult anxiety-like behaviors and increased some depressive-like behaviors compared with hamsters exposed to long days (16 hr light/day). Postweaning exposure to short days increased depressive- and anxiety-like behaviors compared with long days. Sex differences in affective behaviors were observed. These results suggest that anxiety-like behaviors are organized early in life and endure throughout adulthood, and anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors are modified by postweaning photoperiod. The persistence of photoperiod-induced affective behaviors in rodents supports the hypothesis that symptoms of human affective disorders may reflect ancestral adaptations to seasonal environments. The prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster) exhibits parental behavior in both males and females and extensive alloparenting in juveniles. The authors studied the effects on juvenile alloparenting of antagonists for the PCP, glycine, and glutamate sites on the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. In male voles, all 3 drugs had an inverted-U dose-response curve. This change could not be attributed to fear of the pup or a nonspecific impairment of cognition, level of locomotor activity, or motor coordination. The PCP site antagonist had a U-shaped dose-response curve in females, the opposite of that in males, but neither of the other drugs changed female alloparental behavior. Both male and female voles exhibit alloparental behavior, but its neurobiological underpinnings are sexually dimorphic in juveniles. The effect of increasing concentrations of aromatase inhibitor CGS 16949A on LH- and testosterone-supplemented estradiol secretion by Leydig cells was studied. Leydig cells were obtained from immature and mature bank voles, which were reared in a long or a short photoperiod conditions. They were either incubated for 6 hrs with LH and/or testosterone (LH/testosterone-supplemented cultures), or as the control cultures. Aromatase inhibitor was added for further 18 h. After 24-h incubation period testosterone and estradiol secretion were radioimmunologically examined. This study revealed that in bank voles, Leydig cells' aromatase activity appeared to be photoperiod- and age-dependent. However, the differences in its activity were seen only in case of mature tissue. In immature bank voles, reared in both regimes of light aromatase activity was low, while in mature animals a 50% increase was observed. Thus, aromatase activity and estradiol biosynthesis were much lower in the Leydig cell culture from a short day than in the analogus culture fom a long one. The present study also showed different sensitivity to the stimulation of LH between young and adult bank voles kept in different regimes of light, which could be connected with the number of Leydig cells' LH receptors.  相似文献

The Siberian hamster, Phodopus sungorus, breeds seasonally. In the laboratory, the seasonal breeding can be controlled by photoperiod, which affects the durations of nightly melatonin secretions. Winterlike short day lengths induce gonadal regression in adult animals, and pups born and maintained in short days undergo gonadal development much later than animals born into long days. The spinal nucleus of the bulbocavernosus (SNB) and its target muscles, the bulbocavernosus (BC) and levator ani (LA), comprise a sexually dimorphic, androgensensitive neuromuscular system involved in male reproduction. The SNB neuromuscular system was studied in male Siberian hamsters maintained from conception in short-day (8:16 h light/dark cycle) versus long-day (16:8 h light/dark cycle) conditions. At 40-47 days of age, development of three components of the SNB neuromuscular system were all significantly delayed in hamsters raised in the short photoperiod: BC/LA muscle weight, the size of SNB motoneuronal somata, and the area of the neuromuscular junctions at the BC/LA muscles of short-day hamsters were each significantly reduced relative to those of longday counterparts. Thus, development of the SNB reproductive system is delayed under short day lengths in this species.  相似文献

In vivo microdialysis was used to assess the effects of novelty and pain on hippocampal ACh release in male and female rats. Experiments were carried out during the dark phase and consisted of 2 days of tests: on Day 1, after Baseline 1, animals were exposed to a new cage (Novelty) to which, 30 min later, a plastic cylinder (Object) was introduced. On Day 2, after Baseline 2, the Formalin test (50 microl of formalin 10%, s.c. injected in the dorsal hindpaw) was carried out in the animal's home cage. All behaviors were recorded. The extracellular levels of ACh in the dorsal hippocampus were estimated, in 10-min samples, by assay of ACh in the dialysates by HPLC. On Day 1 the raw values of ACh were higher in females than in males, but no sex difference was present when the percentage of change was considered. In both sexes the Novelty and Object tests induced an increase in ACh levels with respect to Baseline. Higher levels of exploration were present in females than males during the first 10 min of Novelty. On Day 2, ACh release increased in both sexes during the Formalin test. No sex difference in either ACh raw values or the percentages of change were found. Females showed higher levels of licking and lower levels of activity than males. The present study shows that novelty and pain induce similar hippocampal cholinergic activation in male and female rats but different behaviors. The results are discussed in light of the several anatomical and functional sex differences present in the hippocampus.  相似文献

During summer, female meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) maintain territories and males do not engage in paternal care. As day length shortens, territories dissolve and males nest with females and young. Because paternal behavior has never been studied in free-living meadow voles during colder months or in the laboratory under short photoperiods, the authors examined whether males housed in short day (SD) lengths exhibited more frequent or better quality paternal behavior than males housed in long day (LD) lengths. Sexually and parentally inexperienced (naive) SD males exhibited proportionally more and qualitatively better paternal care than naive LD males. SD males were more responsive than LD males to classic social cues associated with preparturn aggression inhibition and paternal onset. SD sires also displayed qualitatively better paternal behavior than LD sires. These data suggest that meadow vole paternal state is regulated by specific social and environmental cues that may contain reliable information about ecological conditions that favor paternal care. Diurnal variations in serum hormone levels during 2 different stages of prepubertal development were investigated in male and female rats. Groups of 13 to 18 and 25 to 30 day old male and female rats were decapitated at 4-hour by intervals during a period of 24 h. Their blood was collected and hormones were measured by radio-immunoassay. FSH levels were constantly high in 13 to 18, but low in 25 to 30 day old females. FSH was low in younger males, and significantly higher but without diurnal fluctuations in the older males. Serum LH was low in approximately 40% of the 13 to 18 day old females, while 40% had moderately high levels, and the remaining females extremely high levels of the hormone. Most of the extremely high LH peaks were found at 15.00 h and some at 03.00 h. Older females and males of both age groups had constantly low serum LH levels. Serum oestradiol was high in males and females during days 13 to 18, but it was lower in the 25 to 30 day old animals. In the young females prolactin was slightly elevated between 15.00 h and 19.00 h, while in the males the serum prolactin fluctuations were not significant. Serum testosterone was low in females at all times. The 13 to 18 day old males had higher testosterone levels than the 25 to 30 day old males. Both groups showed slight, but insignificant fluctuations in serum testosterone.  相似文献

The present study assessed whether prenatal androgen and estrogen exposure affected adult spatial learning and hippocampal morphology. Water maze performance, the CA1 and CA3 pyramidal cell field, and the dentate gyrus-granule cell layer (DG-GCL) morphology were assessed at adulthood (70+ days of age) in males, females, androgen-treated (testosterone propionate, TP, or dihydrotestosterone propionate, DHTP) females (2-4 mg/day), estradiol benzoate (EB)-treated females (100 microgram/day), and males treated with the antiandrogen flutamide (8 mg/day). Pregnant rats were injected daily (sc) between Embryonic Day 16 and birth; all pups were delivered by cesarean section. Flutamide-treated males were castrated upon delivery, and adult castrates were used to control for activational effects. Steroid-sensitive sex differences were observed in water maze performance in favor of males. Males had larger CA1 and CA3 pyramidal cell field volumes and soma sizes than females, which were feminized with flutamide treatment. TP and EB, but not DHTP, masculinized CA1 pyramidal cell field volume and neuronal soma size; CA3 was masculinized in both TP- and DHTP-treated females, while EB was ineffective. No effects were observed in cell density, number, or DG-GCL volume or due to adult hormone levels. Thus, prenatal androgens and estrogen influence sex differences in adult spatial navigation and exert differential effects on CA1 and CA3 pyramidal cell morphology. Hence, in addition to the previously reported postnatal component, there is also a prenatal component to the critical period in which gonadal steroids organize the neural mechanisms underlying sex differences in adult spatial ability.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that prolactin may up- and down-regulate prolactin receptor gene expression in the anterior pituitary gland and hypothalamus respectively. Experiments were carried out in bantams (Gallus domesticus). Comparisons were made of concentrations of PRLR mRNA in the anterior pituitary gland and basal and preoptic hypothalamus in adult males and females held on long days (low vs high plasma prolactin); in 3-week-old juvenile male and females on short days (high vs low plasma prolactin); in 8-week-old juvenile male and females on short days (both low plasma prolactin); in adult laying, incubating, and out-of-lay (high, very high, and low plasma prolactin, respectively); in adult cockerels exposed to long or short days (high vs low prolactin); and in adult hens exposed to long or short days (high vs low prolactin). There was a sex difference in anterior pituitary and basal hypothalamic PRLR mRNA, with lower values in both tissues in females than in males. Compared with laying and out-of-lay hens, anterior pituitary and basal hypothalamic PRLR mRNA concentrations in incubating hens were increased and decreased, respectively. In adult birds of either sex held on long or short days, there was no difference in pituitary PRLR mRNA, while basal hypothalamic PRLR mRNA was lower on short days. PRLR mRNA in the preoptic hypothalamus was not affected by sex, reproductive state, or photoperiod. It is concluded that there is no consistent relationship between plasma prolactin, in the physiological range, and the concentration of PRLR mRNA in the anterior pituitary gland, basal hypothalamus, and preoptic hypothalamus.  相似文献

Seasonal differences exist in the attractiveness of scents in meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus. To determine whether photoperiodically induced changes in the attractiveness of a sex-specific scent is governed by melatonin, we implanted long-photoperiod male and female scent donors with a Silastic implant containing a 10-mm active length of melatonin, a 20-mm active length of melatonin, or no melatonin. The first experiment shows that 8 weeks of melatonin treatment is sufficient to induce long-photoperiod voles to produce scents that are no longer attractive to the opposite sex. The second experiment shows that a similar time course of melatonin treatment was sufficient to induce long-photoperiod females treated with melatonin to produce scents that are attractive to short-photoperiod females. Melatonin implants lowered the gonadal hormone titers and reduced the weight of the gonads of treated long-photoperiod voles to titers and weights that are characteristic of short-photoperiod voles. In both experiments, the behavioral and physiological effects were independent of whether scent donors received 10- or 20-mm implants of melatonin. Together, the results of the two experiments reveal that melatonin mediates the photoperiodically induced changes in gonadal hormone titers that control the seasonal differences in the sexual attractiveness of the anogenital area scent produced by meadow voles.  相似文献

Exposure of 8 human subjects in summer to a natural 16 h bright light photoperiod phase advanced the morning salivary melatonin decline and cortisol rise and shortened the nocturnal melatonin signal by 2 h relative to the winter patterns of the same subjects followed under a combined artificial and natural light 16 h photoperiod. The data suggest that summer days experienced from sunrise till sunset and not winter days with a combined artificial and natural light long photoperiod evoke a true long day response of the human circadian system.  相似文献

In this study, a multivariate analysis of the locomotor activity of adult, breeding male and female meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) was conducted. Overall, male voles made more movements and spent more time in the center of the activity chambers than did female voles. The authors further investigated the effects of brief exposure (3 min) to predator (red fox [Vulpes vulpes]) odor and various control odors (butyric acid, extract of orange) on subsequent activity. Control odors had no effects. Immediately following exposure to the fox odor, male voles exhibited significantly lower levels of activity and decreased center time. No significant changes in any activity variable were observed in the female voles following exposure to fox odor. This study provides evidence for sex differences in both basal activity levels of meadow voles and activity following exposure to a predator odor. A total of 102 male and 146 female offspring of Sprague-Dawley rats injected daily from Day 16 through Day 20 of gestation with either 2 mg of testosterone propionate (TP) in .1 ml of sesame oil or oil alone were tested for sexual receptivity following injections of 3.3 μg of estradiol benzoate (EB) and .5 mg of progesterone (P) beginning at 40, 80, or 120 days of age. At each age, neonatally gonadectomized males and females from TP-injected litters exhibited less receptivity than corresponding oil-injected controls. Prenatally androgenized females were similar to neonatally castrated oil-injected males at all ages. Ovarian implants from birth to 35 days of age significantly increased receptivity in neonatally castrated males and androgenized females.
