Carbon fiber (CF) modification by grafting of various graphene-based nanofillers (GBN) by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technique was proven to be a successful technique to enhance the out-of-plane performance of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. Graphene carboxyl (G-COOH) grafting on carbon fiber by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) is a promising technique to improve the mechanical properties of CFRP composites. To our knowledge, there is a dearth of literature available on the effect of EPD process parameters on the mechanical behavior of modified CFRP composites. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of nanofiller concentration in the suspension, applied current, and the time of deposition during EPD on the mechanical behavior of nanophase CFRP composites, thus making it a novel work. With increasing concentration, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) improved consistently and has shown a maximum enhancement of 24.7% than that of neat CFRP composite at 1.5 g/L nanofiller concentration, whereas flexural strength remained almost unaffected with varying concentration. On the contrary, variation of deposition current has affected the flexural strength but not ILSS. The maximum flexural strength was obtained at a deposition current of 5.0A with an improvement of 16.3% in comparison with neat CFRP samples. However, both flexural strength and ILSS of hybrid CFRP composites have shown improvement with increasing deposition time. At 60 min of deposition, ILSS and flexural strength have shown maximum improvements of 35.0 and 26.6%, respectively, when compared to control specimen. After evaluating the effect of process parameters future scope of the work involves the optimization of parameters for EPD of G-COOH. Fractographic analysis of the fractured samples was performed using scanning electron microscope (SEM) to apprehend prominent failure mechanisms. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. In this paper, short SiC fiber (SiCsf) reinforced geopolymer composites (SiCsf/geopolymer) were prepared and effects of fiber contents and lengths on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated. In-situ crack growth was carried out to study the fracture behavior and toughening mechanism of the composites. The results showed that SiCsf/geopolymer composite developed weak interfacial bonding state through mechanical interlocking rather than chemical interfacial reaction. The presence of SiCsf not only enhanced both flexural strength and work of fracture, but also prevented the catastrophic failure as seen in neat geopolymer. When fiber content was 2.0 vol% with length of 5 mm, the composite obtained the highest flexural strength and work of fracture, which were 5.6 and 63 times as high as those of neat geopolymer, respectively. In-situ crack growth together with fractographs showed that toughening mechanisms of the composite included formation and propagation of microcracks, crack deflection, fiber debonding and significant pulling-out.  相似文献

Carbon fiber reinforced epoxy (CE) composite is ideal for a cryogenic fuel storage tank in space applications due to its unmatched specific strength and modulus. In this article, inter-laminar shear strength (ILSS) of carbon fiber/epoxy (CE) composite is shown to be considerably improved by engineering the interface with carboxyl functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube (FCNT) using electrophoretic deposition technique. FCNT deposited fibers from different bath concentrations (0.3, 0.5, and 1.0 g/L) were used to fabricate the laminates, which were then tested at room (30°C) and in-situ liquid nitrogen (LN) (−196°C) temperature as well as conditioning for different time durations (0.25, 0.5, 1, 6, and 12 h) followed by immediate RT testing to study the applicability of these engineered materials at the cryogenic environment. A maximum increment in ILSS was noticed at bath concentration of 0.5 g/L, which was ~21% and ~ 17% higher than neat composite at 30°C and − 196°C, respectively. Short-term LN conditioning was found to be detrimental due to developed cryogenic shock, which was further found to be compensated by cryogenic interfacial clamping upon long-term exposure.  相似文献

In this study, SiC whiskers (SCWS) reinforced geopolymer composites (SCWS/KGP) and their ceramic products (SCWS/leucite) were prepared, and effects of SiC whiskers contents on the microstructure and flexural strength of the SCWS/KGP and SCWS/leucite composites were investigated. The results show that the whisker addition has little influence on both phase composition and thermal shrinkage of the KGP composites, but a suitable content of whisker will result in the improved flexural strength, and when the SCWS content is 2 wt%, flexural strength of the SCWS/KGP composite is enhanced by 95% compared with the neat geopolymer. The flexural strength of the composites can be further enhanced significantly after the composites being treated at 1100 °C and 1200 °C and flexural strength of the composite with SCWS content of 2 wt% was 107% and 125% higher than the untreated counterpart, respectively. The increase in flexural strength of the composites should be attributed to the strong leucite formation, whisker debonding and pulling out from matrix during the fracturing process based on the good interfacial bonding state between whisker and leucite matrix.  相似文献

In recent years, researchers have been interested in incorporating inorganic nanoparticles into thermosetting epoxy composites to improve their mechanical properties. This research explores the diffusion of ball milled zircon (ZrSiO4) and anatase TiO2 nanoparticles with glass fibre reinforced epoxy polymer (GFRP) composites at the same weight percentages (0:0, 2.5:2.5, 5:5, and 7.5:7.5) to improve mechanical properties. The ZrSiO4 and TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by an ultrasonic liquid processor, and composites were fabricated using the compression molding technique. The void percentage was calculated from the theoretical and measured densities of composites. Mechanical tests were conducted in accordance with ASTM standards. The particle sizes of zircon and titanium dioxide were calculated as 70.5 nm and 64.5 nm, respectively, using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), which reveals the fibre pullout, damaged interfaces, filler dispersion, and voids in specimens. The chemical composition, crystalline structure, and size were determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was found that the GFRP composite with Zircon and TiO2 incorporated at a concentration of 5:5 wt% has a greater tensile strength of 74.34%, a tensile modulus of 18.14%, a flexural strength of 33.55%, a flexural modulus of 33.61%, a shore "D" hardness of 4.66%, and a capacity to absorb energy of 61.14% in notched specimens with neat GFRP. With filler addition, the percentage of elongation at failure in the 5:5 wt percent for the tensile test is 44.36%, and the flexural test is 24.38% higher than the neat sample. Hence, this work improves the GFRP composites' mechanical and structural properties.  相似文献

Carbon/carbon composites (C/Cs) with nanographite platelets (NGP) filler in a matrix derived from phenolic resin were produced. Different weight concentration (0.5, 1.5, 3, 5 wt.%) NGP were introduced by spraying the NGP during the prepreg formation. The NGP-reinforced C/Cs were characterized for effect of NGP concentration on microstructure, porosity, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), flexural, ultrasonic and vibration damping behavior. At 1.5 wt.% NGP C/C, the highest values of ILSS observed was 10.5 MPa (increased by 22%), flexure strength of 142.4 MPa (increased by 27%), flexural modulus of 59.2 GPa (increased by 68%) and porosity of 18.8% (reduced by 17.5%) in comparison to neat (without NGP) densified C/C. Ultrasonic testing revealed an average increase of 15% through the thickness Young’s modulus of NGP-C/C; (3.12 GPa at 1.5 wt.% NGP). A 20% average decrease in the damping ratio of the first four modes of vibration was observed in 1.5 wt.% NGP densified C/C. At low concentration (⩽1.5 wt.%) the NGP filled in the pores, cracks and debonded interface but at concentration higher than 1.5 wt.% NGP lost their effectiveness due to agglomeration. The required cycles for desired density/properties are projected to be less compared to neat C/C due to less porosity observed in ⩽1.5 wt.% NGP concentration C/C.  相似文献

The effect of MnO2 additives on the sintering behavior and mechanical properties of alumina-toughened zirconia (ATZ, with 10 vol% alumina) composites was investigated by incorporating different amounts of MnO2 (0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 wt%) and sintering at various temperatures ranging from 1300 to 1450 °C. The addition of MnO2 up to 1.0 wt% improved the sintered density, hardness, flexural strength, and fracture toughness of the composite. However, the addition of 1.5 wt% MnO2 degraded the relative density, hardness, and flexural strength of the composite due to the transformation of the ZrO2 phase from tetragonal to monoclinic and grain coarsening. Optimal results were obtained with 1.0 wt% MnO2 and sintering at 1450 °C, which improved the mechanical properties (hardness: 13.5 GPa, flexural strength: 1.2 GPa, fracture toughness: 8.5 MPa m1/2) and lowered the sintering temperature compared to the conventional sintering temperature of ATZ composites (1550 °C). Thus, the ATZ composite doped with MnO2 is a promising material for structural engineering ceramics owing to its improved mechanical properties and lower sintering temperature.  相似文献

Pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) which is rich in cellulose, relatively inexpensive, and abundantly available has the potential for polymer reinforcement. The present study investigated the tensile, flexural, and impact behavior of PALF-reinforced polyester composites as a function of fiber loading, fiber length, and fiber surface modification. The tensile strength and Young's modulus of the composites were found to increase with fiber content in accordance with the rule of mixtures. The elongation at break of the composites exhibits an increase by the introduction of fiber. The mechanical properties are optimum at a fiber length of 30 mm. The flexural stiffness and flexural strength of the composites with a 30% fiber weight fraction are 2.76 GPa and 80.2 MPa, respectively. The specific flexural stiffness of the composite is about 2.3 times greater than that of neat polyester resin. The work of fracture (impact strength) of the composite with 30% fiber content was found to be 24 kJ m−2. Significant improvement in the tensile strength was observed for composites with silane A172-treated fibers. Scanning electron microscopic studies were carried out to understand the fiber-matrix adhesion, fiber breakage, and failure topography. The PALF polyester composites possess superior mechanical properties compared to other cellulose-based natural fiber composites. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this research, Araldite 2011 has been reinforced using different weight fractions of Reduced Graphene Oxide (RGO). Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analyses were conducted and it has been shown that introduction of the RGO greatly changes the film morphology of the neat adhesive. Uni-axial tests were carried out to obtain the mechanical characteristics of the adhesive-RGO composites. It has been observed that introducing 0.5 wt% RGO enhances the ultimate tensile strength of the composites by 30%. In addition, single lap joints using neat adhesive and adhesive-RGO composites were fabricated to investigate the effect of the added RGO on the lap shear strength of the joints. Results show that the joints with added 0.5 wt RGO exhibited 27% higher lap shear strength compared to the joints bonded with neat adhesive. Finally, Finite Element (FE) numerical solutions using Cohesive Zone Modeling (CZM) have been carried out to simulate the failure behavior of the joints, and it has been shown that the FE models can predict the joint’s failure load.  相似文献

In this article, modification of carbon fiber surface by carbon based nanofillers (multi-walled carbon nanotubes [CNT], carbon nanofibers, and multi-layered graphene) has been achieved by electrophoretic deposition technique to improve its interfacial bonding with epoxy matrix, with a target to improve the mechanical performance of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites. Flexural and short beam shear properties of the composites were studied at extreme temperature conditions; in-situ cryo, room and elevated temperature (−196, 30, and 120°C respectively). Laminate reinforced with CNT grafted carbon fibers exhibited highest delamination resistance with maximum improvement in flexural strength as well as in inter-laminar shear strength (ILSS) among all the carbon fiber reinforced epoxy (CE) composites at all in-situ temperatures. CNT modified CE composite showed increment of 9% in flexural strength and 17.43% in ILSS when compared to that of unmodified CE composite at room temperature (30°C). Thermomechanical properties were investigated using dynamic mechanical analysis. Fractography was also carried out to study different modes of failure of the composites.  相似文献

Three-dimensional (3D) needled C/SiC composites were prepared and subjected to three-point bending tests from room temperature (RT) to 2000 ℃ under vacuum. The results show that the flexural strength and modulus increase in the range of RT to 800 °C due to the release of thermal residual stress (TRS). At 800–1700 °C, the modulus further increases for the further release of TRS, while the destruction of the pyrolytic carbon (PyC) coating reduces the flexural strength. Up to 2000 ℃, the thermal mismatch stress in the composites cause fiber slippage and matrix crack deflection to be zigzag, which increase the fracture strength. The change of components properties mediated by high temperature and the release of TRS play a leading role in the flexural strength and fracture mode. The results provide important support for the mechanical behavior of 3D needled C/SiC composites at ultra-high temperature.  相似文献

The effect of two different fiber architectures on the mechanical properties and mechanical behavior of the SiO2f/SiO2 composites processed by silicasol-infiltration-sintering has been investigated. The composites were sintered at relatively low temperature (450 °C). The fiber/matrix interface strength was weak. The characteristics of 2.5D (shallow straight-joint) structure and 3D four-directional braided structure were determined. The tensile strength, flexural strength, shear strength and failure mechanisms of both 2.5D (shallow straight-joint) and 3D four-directional braided SiO2f/SiO2 composites were characterized. It was found that the fiber placement in the preform will strongly affect the mechanical property and failure behavior of the composite. The results of the tests and microstructural observations indicated that 3D four-directional braided SiO2f/SiO2 composite had better mechanical properties than 2.5D (shallow straight-joint) SiO2f/SiO2 composite. 3D four-directional braided SiO2f/SiO2 composite exhibited more graceful failure under loading than 2.5D (shallow straight-joint) SiO2f/SiO2 composite.  相似文献

This research investigates the physical and mechanical properties of hybrid composites made of epoxy reinforced by kenaf and flax natural fibers to investigate the hybridization influences of the composites. Pure and hybrid composites were fabricated using bi-directional kenaf and flax fabrics at different stacking sequences utilizing the vacuum-assisted resin infusion method. The pure and hybrid composites' physical properties, such as density, fiber volume fraction (FVF), water absorption capacity, and dimensional stability, were measured. The tests of tensile, flexural, interlaminar shear and fracture toughness (Mode II) were examined to determine the mechanical properties. The results revealed that density remained unchanged for the hybrid compared to pure kenaf/epoxy composites. The tensile, flexural, and interlaminar shear performance of flax/epoxy composite is improved by an increment of kenaf FVF in hybrid composites. The stacking sequence significantly affected the mechanical properties of hybrid composites. The highest tensile strength (59.8 MPa) was obtained for FK2 (alternative sequence of flax and kenaf fibers). However, FK3 (flax fiber located on the outer surfaces) had the highest interlaminar shear strength (12.5 MPa) and fracture toughness (3302.3 J/m2) among all tested hybrid composites. The highest water resistance was achieved for FK5 with the lowest thickness swelling.  相似文献

SiC–Zr2CN composites were fabricated by conventional hot pressing from β-SiC and ZrN powders with 2 vol% equimolar Y2O3–Sc2O3 as a sintering additive. The effects of the ZrN addition on the room-temperature (RT) mechanical properties and high-temperature flexural strength of the SiC–Zr2CN composites were investigated. The fracture toughness gradually increased from 4.2 ± 0.3 MPa·m1/2 for monolithic SiC to 6.3 ± 0.2 MPa·m1/2 for a SiC–20 vol% ZrN composite, whereas the RT flexural strength (546 ± 32 MPa for the monolithic SiC) reached its maximum of 644 ± 87 MPa for the SiC–10 vol% ZrN composite. The monolithic SiC had improved strength at 1200°C, whereas the SiC–Zr2CN composites could not retain their RT strengths at 1200°C. The typical flexural strength values of the SiC–0, 10, and 20 vol% ZrN composites at 1200°C were 650 ± 53, 448 ± 31, and 386 ± 19 MPa, whereas their RT strength values were 546 ± 32, 644 ± 87, and 528 ± 117 MPa, respectively.  相似文献

In this study, glass fibers were modified using γ‐glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane of different concentrations to improve the interfacial adhesion at interfaces between fibers and matrix. Effects of γ‐glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane on mechanical properties and fracture behavior of glass fiber/epoxy composites were investigated experimentally. Mechanical properties of the composites have been investigated by tensile tests, short beam tests, and flexural tests. The short‐beam method was used to measure the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of laminates. The tensile and flexural properties of composites were characterized by tensile and three‐point bending tests, respectively. The fracture surfaces of the composites were observed with a scanning electron microscope. On comparing the results obtained for the different concentrations of silane solution, it was found that the 0.5% GPS silane treatment provided the best mechanical properties. The ILSS value of heat‐cleaned glass fiber reinforced composite is enhanced by ∼59% as a result of the glass fiber treatment with 0.5% γ‐GPS. Also, an improvement of about 37% in tensile strength, about 78% in flexural strength of the composite with the 0.5% γ‐GPS treatment of glass fibers was observed. POLYM. The natural fiber reinforced biodegradable polymer composites were prepared with short jute fiber as reinforcement in PLA (Poly lactic acid) matrix. The short jute fiber is successively treated with NaOH at various concentrations (5%, 10%, and 15%) and H2O2. The composites were prepared with untreated and treated short jute fibers at different weight proportions (up to 25%) in PLA and investigated for mechanical properties. The results showed that the composite with successive alkali treated jute fiber at 10% NaOH and H2O2 with 20% fiber loading has shown 18% higher flexural strength than neat PLA and untreated jute/PLA composite. The flexural modulus of the composite at 25% fiber loading was 125% and 110% higher than that of composites with untreated fibers and neat PLA, respectively. The impact strength of composite with untreated fibers at higher fiber weight fraction was 23% high as compared to neat PLA and 26% high compared to composite with treated fibers. The water absorption was more for untreated jute/PLA composite at 25% fiber loading than all other composites. The composite with untreated fibers has high thermal degradation compared with treated fibers but lower than that of pure PLA matrix. The enzymatic environment has increased the rate of degradation of composites as compared to soil burial. Surface morphology of biodegraded surfaces of the composites were studied using SEM method. For reducing the cure temperature and improving the thermal stability and mechanical properties, a thermosetting resin system composed of novolak and bismaleimide (BMI) was developed by reactive blending and using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as a novel curing agent. Novolak was allylated and reacted with BMI to produce bismaleimide allylated novolak (BAN), and the effect of DCP on flexural, impact and heat distortion temperature of cured resin were investigated. On the basis of improved mechanical and thermal properties at 0.5% DCP contents, the curing behavior of DCP/BAN resin system was evaluated by DSC analysis. Ene, Diels‐Alder, homo‐polymerization and alternating copolymerization which occurred in DCP/BAN resin system were further verified using FTIR at sequential cure conditions from 140 to 200°C. Kissinger and Ozawa‐Flynn‐wall methods were used to optimize the process and curing reactions of DCP/BAN resin system. The results showed that the addition of 0.5% DCP in BAN reduced the curing temperature and time of the modified resin. For evaluating process ability of the modified system, composite samples using polyvinyl acetyl fiber were molded and tested for flexural properties. The resulting samples showed better flexural properties when compared with the composite made with neat BAN. The modified 0.5% DCP/BAN resin system with good mechanical properties and manufacturability can be used for making bulk molding compounds and fiber reinforced composites required in various commercial and aerospace applications. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Oxide/oxide composites reinforced by two-dimensional fiber fabrics are important structural materials at high temperatures but exhibit low delamination resistance. This study developed a simple slurry infiltration and sintering (SIS) process to fabricate three-dimensional oxide/oxide composites. The results showed that a homogeneous microstructure in three directions was obtained. This composite possessed a weak matrix, which had a porous structure and low elastic modulus. Typical mechanical properties of the composite were not lower than those of two-dimensional oxide/oxide composites since the flexural strength and fracture toughness were 332.4 MPa and 11.6 MPa·m1/2, respectively. Particularly, the composite had a good interlaminar shear strength of 25.4 MPa and a superior transthickness tensile strength of 5.6 MPa. X-ray computed tomography showed that fiber yarns in the through-thickness direction effectively impeded crack propagation and enhanced delamination resistance. Therefore, the reported SIS process is a very promising method for manufacturing three-dimensional oxide/oxide composites.  相似文献

Polymer hybridization technique, consisting of an interlayer arrangement of different polymers, acts as the most economical and promising technique in augmenting the glass fiber-reinforced polymer composite's mechanical properties. This investigation focuses on the effect of cure kinetics on the flexural behavior of glass-polymer hybrid (GPH) composite, and also elucidates the comparative analysis on the mechanical behavior of glass-epoxy (GE) composite, glass-vinyl ester (GVE) composite, and GPH composite. The optimal postcuring temperature has been found to be 200°C for GPH composite among the other postcuring temperatures conducted at 140, 170, and 230°C. Among all these abovementioned composites, highest flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength properties have been recorded by the 200°C postcured GPH composite leading to 10.87 and 18.76% increment, respectively, compared with GE composite. Furthermore, thermomechanical characterization has been done to know the viscoelastic behavior of the GPH composite postcured at different temperatures using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The fracture morphology of flexural tested composite samples demonstrated a combination of failure modes. Relevant information on the chemical restructuring and fracture morphology of experimented composite material using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has also been studied.  相似文献

Adhesive bonding of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) epoxy composites provides many advantages over mechanical fastening for assembling aerospace structures including weight savings, reduced manufacturing flow, and added structural efficiency. To ensure the reliability of bonded joints in primary airframe structures, the surface preparation method and execution are critical. Surface preparation is widely recognized as a key step in the bonding process and is one element of a bonding method that must be controlled to produce robust and predictable bonds in a precise and repeatable manner. Laser ablation of composite surface resin can provide an efficient, precise, and reproducible means of preparing composite surfaces for adhesive bonding. Advantages include elimination of physical waste (i.e., grit media and sacrificial peel ply layers that ultimately require disposal), reduction in process variability due to increased precision (e.g. monitoring laser parameters), and automation of surface preparation. This paper describes a surface preparation technique using a nanosecond, frequency-tripled Nd:YAG laser source. Lap shear specimens were laser treated and tested and apparent shear strength and failure modes of lap shear specimens were used to assess mechanical performance over a three-year accelerated aging study by exposing bonded specimens to 71 °C (160 °F) and 85% relative humidity.  相似文献
