Enacted and perceived HIV stigma was examined among substance-using young people living with HIV (YPLH) in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City (N = 147). Almost all YPLH (89%) reported perceived stigma, and 31% reported enacted experiences in the past 3 months; 64% reported experiences during their lifetime. The HIV stigma questions were characterized by factors of avoidance, social rejection, abuse, and shame. In multivariate models, enacted stigma was associated with gay or bisexual identity, symptomatic HIV or AIDS, and bartering sex. Perceived stigma was associated with female gender, symptomatic HIV or AIDS, bartering sex, lower injection drug use, and fewer friends and family knowing serostatus. Gay or bisexual YPLH who were also HIV symptomatic or AIDS diagnosed experienced more HIV stigma than their heterosexual peers. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

We examined the hypothesis that changes in memory performance of older normal participants are due to frontal lobe dysfunction by comparing three groups of normal individuals (young, middle-aged, and older) with three groups of patients who had documented lesions in specific frontal regions: unilateral right, unilateral left, and bilateral. All participants were given 4 successive learning trials on each of 3 lists of words: unrelated, related but presented in a pseudo-random order, and related and presented in a blocked format. We found significant correspondences in performance between the older normal participants and the (younger) frontal damaged groups. The qualitative nature of recall performance, particularly as measured by indices of organizational control processes, was similar between older normals and patients with frontal damage, particularly those with right frontal damage, but different from that normally exhibited by patients with focal limbic/memory dysfunction. These results add to the evidence that at least some of the decline in older people in tasks which measure executive or supervisory abilities is due to frontal system dysfunction. J. C. Wakefield's (1999) elaboration of his harmful dysfunction analysis (HDA) of mental disorder does little to address previous criticisms (S. O. Lilienfeld & L. Marino, 1995) and instead reveals further conceptual weaknesses in his position. The authors demonstrate that (a) a Roschian analysis can account for the results of all of Wakefield's conceptual experiments and predicts a number of judgments of disorder not predicted by the HDA, (b) the HDA is incapable in many cases of providing a scientifically nonarbitrary distinction between disorder and nondisorder, and (c) the HDA cannot account for failures of cultural exaptations, mismatches between evolutionary design and novel environments, or defenses against threat. The authors argue that the HDA has been convincingly falsified and discuss the failure of essentialistic concepts to resolve controversies in other domains of biological science. The current research uses a novel methodology to examine the role of semantics in reading aloud. Participants were trained to read aloud 2 sets of novel words (i.e., nonwords such as bink): some with meanings (semantic) and some without (nonsemantic). A comparison of reading aloud performance between these 2 sets of novel words was used to provide an indicator of the importance of semantic information in reading aloud. In Experiment 1, in contrast to expectations, reading aloud performance was not better for novel words in the semantic condition. In Experiment 2, the training of novel words was modified to reflect more realistic steps of lexical acquisition: Reading aloud performance became faster and more accurate for novel words in the semantic condition, but only for novel words with inconsistent pronunciations. This semantic advantage for inconsistent novel words was again observed when a subset of participants from Experiment 2 was retested 6-12 months later (in Experiment 3). These findings provide support for a limited but significant role for semantics in the reading aloud process. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Evidence in support of the averaging model of information integration over the adding model is based on the assumption of independence among the items of information being integrated. When nonindependence is introduced in a manner relating to path analysis, the resulting path-analytic integration (PAI) model is shown to account for both crossover interaction and the decelerating set-size effect. The PAI model also makes a prediction contrary to the averaging model: When the set of correlations among 2 items of information and the overall judgment has a negative product, the crossover interaction is predicted to be the opposite of that previously reported. Results supporting the PAI model over the averaging model are obtained in an experiment in which 120 university students were asked to make judgments about the overall attractiveness of a product based on information given about its price and/or quality. PURPOSE: Women with epilepsy who become pregnant are commonly considered to be at high risk for complications during pregnancy or delivery. The offspring are also considered to have increased risk of perinatal mortality, congenital malformations, and maturational delay. Because few of these studies are population based, potential bias exists because of selection. METHODS: We performed a historical population-based cohort study in Iceland to determine the prevalence of epilepsy among pregnant women, to identify pregnancy and delivery complications in women with epilepsy, and to determine the outcome of their pregnancies as compared with that in the general population of Iceland. We identified all women with active epilepsy who gave birth during a 19-year period in Iceland. RESULTS: In this population, 3.3 in 1,000 pregnancies involve mothers with active epilepsy. The frequency of adverse events (AE) during pregnancy in the women with epilepsy is similar to that observed among all live births in the population, but cesarean section was performed twice as frequently as in the general population. Perinatal mortality rate and mean birth weight are not significantly different in the offspring of women with epilepsy as compared with rest of the population. The risk of major congenital malformations (MGM) is increased 2.7-fold over that expected when a mother is treated with antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) during a pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS: Our study indicates that the rate of complications of pregnancy in mothers with active epilepsy is low and similar to that of the general population with epilepsy. Use of AEDs by the mother during pregnancy significantly increases the risk of MGM in the offspring.  相似文献

Serial-order short-term memory (STM), as opposed to item STM, has been shown to be very consistently associated with lexical learning abilities in cross-sectional study designs. This study investigated longitudinal predictions between serial-order STM and vocabulary development. Tasks maximizing the temporary retention of either serial-order or item information were administered to kindergarten children aged 4 and 5. At age 4, age 5, and from age 4 to age 5, serial-order STM capacities, but not item STM capacities, were specifically associated with vocabulary development. Moreover, the increase of serial-order STM capacity from age 4 to age 5 predicted the increase of vocabulary knowledge over the same time period. These results support a theoretical position that assumes an important role for serial-order STM capacities in vocabulary acquisition. It is often assumed that differences in teacher characteristics are a major source of variability in children's educational achievements. We examine this assumption for early literacy achievement by calculating the correlations between pairs of twin children who either shared or did not share a teacher in kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2. Teacher effects—or, more strictly, classroom effects—would show up as higher correlations for same-class than for different-class twin pairs. Same-class correlations were generally higher than different-class correlations, though not significantly so on most occasions. On the basis of the results, we estimate that the maximum variance accounted for by being assigned to the same or different classrooms is 8%. This is an upper-bound figure for a teacher effect because factors other than teachers may contribute to variation attributable to classroom assignment. We discuss the limitations of the study and draw out some of its educational implications. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Objective: This study aims at adapting the Corsi Block-Tapping task to measure serial-spatial memory in blind people and at clarifying the role of visual experience in the task. Method: Congenitally blind, adventitiously blind, and blindfolded sighted people were compared on a version of the Corsi board that allowed the haptic perception of block positions (Haptic-Corsi). Participants placed their fingers on the blocks that the experimenter moved upward according to sequences of increasing length. Afterward, participants reproduced the sequences in forward/backward order. Results: The results showed a significant interaction between groups and forward/backward span: F(2, 58) = 5.74, MSE = .39, p  相似文献

Memory for famous individuals was assessed by the use of a recognition test in which participants first made familiarity judgments, followed by forced-choice decisions to specific probes for identity. Patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) or excisions, 12 left hemisphere and 12 right hemisphere, and 18 control participants identified famous figures across 3 decades (1970s-1990s). Only patients with right TLE were impaired at familiarity judgments of faces; this deficit was evident only for the most recent decades. Both groups of patients, however, were impaired at naming famous faces and at providing semantic information about famous people. These findings suggest the integrity of temporal structures in both hemispheres is critical for retrieval of detailed semantic information about famous individuals. To clarify the concept of task versus person orientation in nursing, a factor analysis of 24 personality-and nursing-attitude variables was performed on 160 nurses from long- and short-term treatment settings in psychiatry and general medicine. 3 factors, Leadership Skills, Hostile-Self-Seeking, and Dependent-Exploited sampled behaviors in the interpersonal sphere and particularly traits related to leadership capability. The 4th factor, Impersonal-Orderly, contained many characteristics of the "Authoritarian Personality." An emphasis on the skilled technical aspects of nursing was one of the elements in this factor. In general, the derived factor scores effectively differentiated nurses from the treatment settings in this study. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

This article describes a social psychological framework for understanding sexual stigma, and it reports data on sexual minority individuals' stigma-related experiences. The framework distinguishes between stigma's manifestations in society's institutions (heterosexism) and among individuals. The latter include enacted sexual stigma (overt negative actions against sexual minorities, such as hate crimes), felt sexual stigma (expectations about the circumstances in which sexual stigma will be enacted), and internalized sexual stigma (personal acceptance of sexual stigma as part of one's value system and self-concept). Drawing from previous research on internalized sexual stigma among heterosexuals (i.e., sexual prejudice), the article considers possible parallels in how sexual minorities experience internalized sexual stigma (i.e., self-stigma, or negative attitudes toward the self). Data are presented from a community sample of lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults (N = 2,259) to illustrate the model's utility for generating and testing hypotheses concerning self-stigma. Researchers disagree over whether negative correlates of extensive part-time employment during adolescence are consequences of working or are due to differential selection into the labor force. This study examines the over-time relation between school-year employment and adjustment in a heterogeneous sample of approximately 1,800 high school sophomores and juniors. Analyses indicate both significant selection effects and negative consequences of employment. Before working, adolescents who later work more than 20 hrs per wk are less engaged in school and are granted more autonomy by their parents. However, taking on a job for more than 20 hrs per wk further disengages youngsters from school, increases delinquency and drug use, furthers autonomy from parents, and diminishes self-reliance. Leaving the labor force after working long hours leads to improved school performance but does not reverse the other negatives. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Spreading activation theories and compound cue theories have both been proposed as accounts of priming phenomena. According to spreading activation theories, the amount of activation that spreads between a prime and a target should be a function of the number of mediating links between the prime and target in a semantic network and the strengths of those links. The amount of activation should determine the amount of facilitation given by a prime to a target in lexical decision. To predict the amount of facilitation, it is necessary to measure the associative links between prime and target in memory. Free-association production probability has been the variable chosen in previous research for this measurement. However, in 3 experiments, the authors show priming effects that free-association production probabilities cannot easily predict. Instead, they argue that the amount of priming depends on the familiarity of the prime and target as a compound, where the compound is formed by the simultaneous presence of the prime and target in short-term memory as a test item. An on-line primed monitoring study was used in an exploration of the nature of semantic memory loss in a patient (P.P.) with semantic dementia who showed a profound semantic impairment on a range of off-line tasks. Priming for pairs of words taken from a common category (e.g., cat-dog, spade-rake, ruby-emerald) was contrasted with that for word pairs from different categories that were related functionally (e.g., shampoo-hair, broom-floor, theater-play). Control participants showed robust priming for both types of semantic relation. P.P., in contrast, showed a normal priming effect for the functionally related conditions but no priming for category coordinates. This result suggests that P.P.'s semantic memory loss cannot be explained solely as a loss of stored representations or as a problem with deliberate controlled access to that information. Rather, elements of both explanations apply for different kinds of semantic information. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

In progressive myoclonus epilepsy (PME), responses to afferent input are frequently abnormal. It is unclear whether the abnormality lies at the cortical, subcortical, or segmental level. To obtain evidence for an exaggerated effect on motor cortical excitability, we used peripheral nerve and transcranial magnetic stimulation in controls and subjects with idiopathic generalized epilepsy and PME. Mean threshold intensity was higher in those with idiopathic generalized epilepsy and PME than in controls, probably as a result of anticonvulsant treatment. A long-latency response to peripheral stimulation and an exaggerated facilitatory effect of peripheral stimulation on the motor evoked potential was present in subjects with PME. Latency differences between the late responses in the upper and lower limbs provided evidence against a segmental reflex and implicated rapidly conducting fibers in the spinal cord. Both the late response and the facilitatory effect had onset latencies consistent with a transcortical pathway, suggesting an exaggerated effect of afferent input on motor cortical excitability in PME.  相似文献

The Addiction-Stroop test has been widely used to investigate the attentional correlates of alcohol and drug abuse; however, the majority of the studies have been conducted with European and American participants. The present study tested whether Iranian drug abusers show higher attentional bias for drug-related stimuli. Participants included drug abusers (N = 53; 100% male), with a clinical history of opium and heroin abuse, who were in a Methadone Maintenance Therapy program. Only nonabusers (N = 71; 71, 54% male) with a history of having never abused of drugs or alcohol participated in the study as controls. All participants completed a computerized Persian version of classic and addiction Stroop tests. The results of a multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) showed that drug abusers had a higher attentional bias for drug-related stimuli than nonabusers, after the effects of age and education had been controlled. The results of repeating the MANCOVA (a) limited to men only, and (b) to men and women in the nonabuser sample showed that the observed difference in the drug-related attentional bias of drug-abusers and nonabusers was not an artifact of gender imbalance. Our findings support the idea that drug-related attentional bias is culture-free. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Four experiments investigated how people judge both the typicality and membership of items in conjunctive concepts such as school furniture or sports which are games. Judgments of membership in conjunctions were overextended, and there was asymmetry between the constituent concepts in their influence on relative conjunctive concept membership. The results are discussed in the light of recent theoretical disputes about the modeling of concept representations and the process of forming conjunctions (Cohen & Murphy, 1984; Osherson & Smith, 1981, 1982; Smith & Osherson, 1984). A theory is proposed in which constituent intensions are combined to form a composite prototype for the conjunction. Membership in both single and conjunctive concepts is then determined in the same unitary fashion, by placing a membership criterion on the perceived similarity of possible exemplars to the prototype.
