Recent research in mobile robot navigation make it feasible to utilize autonomous robots in service fields. But, such applications require more than just navigation. To operate in a peopled environment, robots should recognize and act according to human social behavior. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of one such social behavior: a robot that stands in line much as people do. The system employs stereo vision to recognize lines of people, and uses the concept of personal space for modeling the social behavior. Personal space is used both to detect the end of a line and to determine how much space to leave between the robot and the person in front of it. Our model of personal space is based on measurements from people forming lines. We demonstrate our ideas with a mobile robot navigation system that can purchase a cup of coffee, even if people are waiting in line for service.  相似文献

Recently, several different types of telepresence robots have been developed. Their ability to communicate with a person in a remote location has been analyzed to achieve rich communication, including the presence of an operator. These studies focused on human-sized robots, small-sized non-humanoid robots, or small-sized humanoid robots without human-like proportions. A small-sized humanoid robot with human-like proportions has not been studied because of the absence of such a small humanoid. It should be noted that human-like proportions play a very important role in enhancing the presence of an operator through an avatar. In our previous work, a small-sized humanoid robot named MH-2 was developed for wearable telepresence system. The MH-2 consists of seven degrees-of-freedom (7-DOF) arms, a 3-DOF head, and a torso scaled according to human-like proportions. Wire–pulley mechanisms were employed to achieve a compact design to adopt a requirement for wearability. In this work, a telepresence system is introduced for the evaluation of the communication ability of the MH-2. In the experiment, Skype, using a flat display, was compared with the MH-2. The “Indian Poker” game was employed for the experiment. It is an ideal evaluation platform because it is a psychological game that requires careful observations among the players. The evaluations were conducted in terms of six aspects: emotion or personality, line of sight, familiarity, presence, enjoyment, and smoothness of the game progress. The experimental results showed that the MH-2 performed positively in two out of six aspects, namely the line of sight and smoothness of the game progress. On the other hand, facial expressions play important role to display individual presence. From a comprehensive standpoint, the MH-2 demonstrated good capabilities for rich remote communications.  相似文献

Humans have a remarkable ability to navigate using only vision, but mobile robots have not been nearly as successful. We propose a new approach to vision-guided local navigation, based upon a model of human navigation. Our approach uses the relative headings to the goal and to obstacles, the distance to the goal, and the angular width of obstacles, to compute a potential field over the robot heading. This potential field controls the angular acceleration of the robot, steering it towards the goal and away from obstacles. Because the steering is controlled directly, this approach is well suited to local navigation for nonholonomic robots. The resulting paths are smooth and have continuous curvature. This approach is designed to be used with single-camera vision without depth information but can also be used with other kinds of sensors. We have implemented and tested our method on a differential-drive robot and present our experimental results.  相似文献

In this article, we present a novel approach to learning efficient navigation policies for mobile robots that use visual features for localization. As fast movements of a mobile robot typically introduce inherent motion blur in the acquired images, the uncertainty of the robot about its pose increases in such situations. As a result, it cannot be ensured anymore that a navigation task can be executed efficiently since the robot’s pose estimate might not correspond to its true location. We present a reinforcement learning approach to determine a navigation policy to reach the destination reliably and, at the same time, as fast as possible. Using our technique, the robot learns to trade off velocity against localization accuracy and implicitly takes the impact of motion blur on observations into account. We furthermore developed a method to compress the learned policy via a clustering approach. In this way, the size of the policy representation is significantly reduced, which is especially desirable in the context of memory-constrained systems. Extensive simulated and real-world experiments carried out with two different robots demonstrate that our learned policy significantly outperforms policies using a constant velocity and more advanced heuristics. We furthermore show that the policy is generally applicable to different indoor and outdoor scenarios with varying landmark densities as well as to navigation tasks of different complexity.  相似文献

Currently, most teleoperation work is focusing on scenarios where slave robots interact with unknown environments. However, in some fields such as medical robots or rescue robots, the other typical teleoperation application is precise object transportation. Generally, the object’s weight is unknown yet essential for both accurate control of the slave robot and intuitive perception of the human operator. However, due to high cost and limited installation space, it is unreliable to employ a force sensor to directly measure the weight. Therefore, in this paper, a control scheme free of force sensor is proposed for teleoperation robots to transfer a weight-unknown object accurately. In this scheme, the workspace mapping between master and slave robot is firstly established, based on which, the operator can generate command trajectory on-line by operating the master robot. Then, a slave controller is designed to follow the master command closely and estimate the object’s weight rapidly, accurately and robust to unmodeled uncertainties. Finally, for the sake of telepresence, a master controller is designed to generate force feedback to reproduce the estimated weight of the object. In the end, comparative experiments show that the proposed scheme can achieve better control accuracy and telepresence, with accurate force feedback generated in only 500 ms.   相似文献

Being able to navigate accurately is one of the fundamental capabilities of a mobile robot to effectively execute a variety of tasks including docking, transportation, and manipulation. As real-world environments often contain changing or ambiguous areas, existing features can be insufficient for mobile robots to establish a robust navigation behavior. A popular approach to overcome this problem and to achieve accurate localization is to use artificial landmarks. In this paper, we consider the problem of optimally placing such artificial landmarks for mobile robots that repeatedly have to carry out certain navigation tasks. Our method aims at finding the minimum number of landmarks for which a bound on the maximum deviation of the robot from its desired trajectory can be guaranteed with high confidence. The proposed approach incrementally places landmarks utilizing linearized versions of the system dynamics of the robot, thus allowing for an efficient computation of the deviation guarantee. We evaluate our approach in extensive experiments carried out both in simulations and with real robots. The experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms other approaches and is suitable for long-term operation of mobile robots.  相似文献

For the last decade, we have been developing a vision-based architecture for mobile robot navigation. Using our bio-inspired model of navigation, robots can perform sensory-motor tasks in real time in unknown indoor as well as outdoor environments. We address here the problem of autonomous incremental learning of a sensory-motor task, demonstrated by an operator guiding a robot. The proposed system allows for semisupervision of task learning and is able to adapt the environmental partitioning to the complexity of the desired behavior. A real dialogue based on actions emerges from the interactive teaching. The interaction leads the robot to autonomously build a precise sensory-motor dynamics that approximates the behavior of the teacher. The usability of the system is highlighted by experiments on real robots, in both indoor and outdoor environments. Accuracy measures are also proposed in order to evaluate the learned behavior as compared to the expected behavioral attractor. These measures, used first in a real experiment and then in a simulated experiment, demonstrate how a real interaction between the teacher and the robot influences the learning process.  相似文献

In the current research proposes the Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) Controller for navigation of single as well as multiple mobile robots in highly cluttered environment. In this research it has tried to design a control system which will be able decide its own path in all environmental conditions to reach the target efficiently. Exploration of unknown environments using autonomous mobile robots is essential in various scenarios such as, for instance, search and rescue missions following natural disasters. The task consists essentially in transversing the environment to build a complete and accurate map of it, and different applications may demand different exploration strategies. In the literature, the most used strategy is a simple greedy approach which visits closest unknown sites first, without considering whether they will likely yield significant information gain about the environment. In this paper, we propose a navigation strategy for efficient exploration of unknown environments that, based on local structures present in the map built so far, uses Shannon entropy to estimate the expected information gain of exploring each candidate frontier. A key advantage of our method over the state of the art is that it allows for the robot to simultaneously (i) select a destination likely to be most informative among all candidate frontiers; and (ii) compute its own path to that destination. This unified approach balances priority among candidate frontiers with highly expected information gain and those closer to the current position of the robot. We thoroughly evaluate our methodology in several experiments in a simulated environment, showing that our approach provides faster information gain about the environment when compared to other exploration strategies.  相似文献

Our research objective is to realize sensor-based navigation for car-like mobile robots. We adopt the generalized Voronoi graph (GVG) for the robot's local path and a map representation. It has the advantage to describe the mobile robot's path for sensor-based navigation from the point of view of completeness and safety. However, it is impossible to apply the path to car-like mobile robots directly, because the limitation of the minimum turning radius for a car-like robot may prevent it from following the GVG exactly. To solve this problem, we propose a local smooth path-planning algorithm for car-like mobile robots. Basically, an initial local path is generated by a conventional path-planning algorithm using GVG theory and it is modified smoothly by a Bezier curve to enable the car-like robots to follow it by maximizing our evaluation function. In this paper, we introduce a local smooth path-planning algorithm based on the GVG and explain the details of our evaluation function. Simulation and experimental results support the validity of the algorithm.  相似文献

Autonomous navigation in unstructured environments is a complex task and an active area of research in mobile robotics. Unlike urban areas with lanes, road signs, and maps, the environment around our robot is unknown and unstructured. Such an environment requires careful examination as it is random, continuous, and the number of perceptions and possible actions are infinite.We describe a terrain classification approach for our autonomous robot based on Markov Random Fields (MRFs ) on fused 3D laser and camera image data. Our primary data structure is a 2D grid whose cells carry information extracted from sensor readings. All cells within the grid are classified and their surface is analyzed in regard to negotiability for wheeled robots.Knowledge of our robot’s egomotion allows fusion of previous classification results with current sensor data in order to fill data gaps and regions outside the visibility of the sensors. We estimate egomotion by integrating information of an IMU, GPS measurements, and wheel odometry in an extended Kalman filter.In our experiments we achieve a recall ratio of about 90% for detecting streets and obstacles. We show that our approach is fast enough to be used on autonomous mobile robots in real time.  相似文献

This paper reports an electroencephalogram-based brain-actuated telepresence system to provide a user with presence in remote environments through a mobile robot, with access to the Internet. This system relies on a P300-based brain-computer interface (BCI) and a mobile robot with autonomous navigation and camera orientation capabilities. The shared-control strategy is built by the BCI decoding of task-related orders (selection of visible target destinations or exploration areas), which can be autonomously executed by the robot. The system was evaluated using five healthy participants in two consecutive steps: 1) screening and training of participants and 2) preestablished navigation and visual exploration telepresence tasks. On the basis of the results, the following evaluation studies are reported: 1) technical evaluation of the device and its main functionalities and 2) the users' behavior study. The overall result was that all participants were able to complete the designed tasks, reporting no failures, which shows the robustness of the system and its feasibility to solve tasks in real settings where joint navigation and visual exploration were needed. Furthermore, the participants showed great adaptation to the telepresence system.  相似文献

Eye gaze is considered to be a particularly important non-verbal communication cue. Gaze research is also becoming a hot topic in human–robot interaction (HRI). However, research on social eye gaze for HRI focuses mainly on human-like robots. There remains a lack of methods for functional robots, which are constrained in appearance, to show gaze-like behavior. In this work, we investigate how we can implement gaze behavior in functional robots to assist humans in reading their intent. We explore design implications based on LED lights as we consider LEDs to be easily installed in most robots while not introducing features that are too human-like (to prevent users from having high expectations towards the robots). In this paper, we first developed a design interface that allows designers to freely test different parameter settings for an LED-based gaze display for a Roomba robot. We summarized design principles for well simulating LED-based gazes. Our suggested design is further evaluated by a large group of participants with regard to their perception and interpretation of the robot's behaviors. On the basis of the findings, we finally offer a set of design implications that can be beneficial to HRI and HCI researchers.  相似文献

Based on the well-known advantages of using an over-actuated mechanism for robots, this research proposes a holonomic highly-maneuverable autonomous robot design for demining service applications. The proposed approach provides an interesting compromise between the design requirements of the demining robot applications and the over-actuated autonomous robots. The robot body is mainly divided into two parts: the first part provides the robot with its required locomotion and it consists of a driving/steering subsystem with four driving wheels (4WD), four steering mechanisms (4SW), and a passive suspension subsystem. The second part is a manipulator with three degrees of freedom that is designed based on two parallelogram mechanisms. The proposed design insures many advantages over existing designs, including stability, maneuverability, autonomous navigation, and simplicity of the control effort constraints. The robot model and its corresponding stability analysis were conducted and simulated in order to evaluate the motion of the robot over different environments rough terrains and slanted surfaces. Moreover, a prototype of the proposed robot was developed and built and different types of sensors were used in order to help it take precise actuation decisions for navigation and control. The prototype was experimentally tested for different scenarios and environments in order to validate the proposed design. The testing results demonstrated decent performance of the robot in autonomous navigation and in localizing the detected objects.  相似文献

针对多移动机器人的编队控制问题,提出了一种结合Polar Histogram避障法的领航-跟随协调编队控制算法。该算法在领航-跟随l-φ编队控制结构的基础上引入虚拟跟随机器人,将编队控制转化为跟随机器人对虚拟跟随机器人的轨迹跟踪控制。结合移动机器人自身传感器技术,在简单甚至复杂的环境下为机器人提供相应的路径运动策略,实现实时导航的目的。以两轮差动Qbot移动机器人为研究对象,搭建半实物仿真平台,进行仿真实验。仿真结果表明:该方法可以有效地实现多移动机器人协调编队和避障控制。  相似文献

This paper presents results generated with a new evolutionary robotics (ER) simulation environment and its complementary real mobile robot colony research test-bed. Neural controllers producing mobile robot maze searching and exploration behaviors using binary tactile sensors as inputs were evolved in a simulated environment and subsequently transferred to and tested on real robots in a physical environment. There has been a considerable amount of proof-of-concept and demonstration research done in the field of ER control in recent years, most of which has focused on elementary behaviors such as object avoidance and homing. Artificial neural networks (ANN) are the most commonly used evolvable controller paradigm found in current ER literature. Much of the research reported to date has been restricted to the implementation of very simple behaviors using small ANN controllers. In order to move beyond the proof-of-concept stage our ER research was designed to train larger more complicated ANN controllers, and to implement those controllers on real robots quickly and efficiently. To achieve this a physical robot test-bed that includes a colony of eight real robots with advanced computing and communication abilities was designed and built. The real robot platform has been coupled to a simulation environment that facilitates the direct wireless transfer of evolved neural controllers from simulation to real robots (and vice versa). We believe that it is the simultaneous development of ER computing systems in both the simulated and the physical worlds that will produce advances in mobile robot colony research. Our simulation and training environment development focuses on the definition and training of our new class of ANNs, networks that include multiple hidden layers, and time-delayed and recurrent connections. Our physical mobile robot design focuses on maximizing computing and communications power while minimizing robot size, weight, and energy usage. The simulation and ANN-evolution environment was developed using MATLAB. To allow for efficient control software portability our physical evolutionary robots (EvBots) are equipped with a PC-104-based computer running a custom distribution of Linux and connected to the Internet via a wireless network connection. In addition to other high-level computing applications, the mobile robots run a condensed version of MATLAB, enabling ANN controllers evolved in simulation to be transferred directly onto physical robots without any alteration to the code. This is the first paper in a series to be published cataloging our results in this field.  相似文献

We consider the task of controlling a large team of non-holonomic ground robots with an unmanned aerial vehicle in a decentralized manner that is invariant to the number of ground robots. The central idea is the development of an abstraction for the team of ground robots that allows the aerial platform to control the team without any knowledge of the specificity of individual vehicles. This happens in much the same way as a human operator can control a single robot vehicle by simply commanding the forward and turning velocities without a detailed knowledge of the specifics of the robot. The abstraction includes a gross model of the shape of the formation of the team, and information about the position and orientation of the team in the plane. We derive controllers that allow the team of robots to move in formation while avoiding collisions and respecting the abstraction commanded by the aerial platform. We propose strategies for controlling the physical spread of the ensemble of robots by splitting and merging the team based on distributed techniques. We provide simulation and experimental results using a team of indoor mobile robots and a three-dimensional, cable-controlled, parallel robot which serves as our indoor unmanned aerial platform.  相似文献

Navigation is a basic skill for autonomous robots. In the last years human–robot interaction has become an important research field that spans all of the robot capabilities including perception, reasoning, learning, manipulation and navigation. For navigation, the presence of humans requires novel approaches that take into account the constraints of human comfort as well as social rules. Besides these constraints, putting robots among humans opens new interaction possibilities for robots, also for navigation tasks, such as robot guides. This paper provides a survey of existing approaches to human-aware navigation and offers a general classification scheme for the presented methods.  相似文献

To an increasing extent, robots are being designed to become a part of the lives of ordinary people. This calls for new models of the interaction between humans and robots, taking advantage of human social and communicative skills. Furthermore, human–robot relationships must be understood in the context of use of robots, and based on empirical studies of humans and robots in real settings. This paper discusses social aspects of interaction with a service robot, departing from our experiences of designing a fetch-and-carry robot for motion-impaired users in an office environment. We present the motivations behind the design of the Cero robot, especially its communication paradigm. Finally, we discuss experiences from a recent usage study, and research issues emerging from this work. A conclusion is that addressing only the primary user in service robotics is unsatisfactory, and that the focus should be on the setting, activities and social interactions of the group of people where the robot is to be used.  相似文献
