Talisman: multimedia for the PC

Talisman introduces a fresh approach to high-performance multimedia at PC prices. PC multimedia solutions have been limited by cost constraints in terms of available memory and bandwidth. This has kept users from rendering the kinds of images they have come to think of as the domain of high-end imaging workstations. Such high-end machines as SGI's Reality Engine often contain tens of megabytes of graphics memory and make use of multiple memory buses that are hundreds of bits wide. Using image caching and compression techniques that drastically reduce memory and bandwidth requirements, the Talisman architecture allows a high-end multimedia system to be built with just 4 Mbytes of memory     

Building mobile multimedia services: a hybrid cloud computing approach

Mobile multimedia services are in high demand, but their development comes at high costs. The emergent computing paradigm cloud computing has great potential to embrace these issues. In fact, we are at the early stage of the coalescence of cloud computing, mobile multimedia and the Web. Motivated by the tremendous success story of the Web based on its simplicity principles, we argue for a comprehensive review on current practices of web and mobile multimedia cloud computing techniques for avoiding frictions. We draw on experience from the development of advanced collaborative multimedia web applications utilizing multimedia metadata standards like MPEG-7 and real-time communication protocols like XMPP. We propose our i5CLoud, a hybrid cloud architecture, which serves as a substrate for scalable and fast time-to-market mobile multimedia services. This paper demonstrates the applicability of emerging cloud computing concepts for mobile multimedia.     

普适多媒体信息发布系统的构建

设计了一种基于龙芯2F的低成本多媒体信息发布系统,并提出了一种基于请求属性的更新调度算法。硬件体系结构以龙芯2F作为服务器CPU,CDMA、WiFi和有线多模更新模块,蓝牙推送模块等构成,软件环境为Linux操作系统。更新调度算法依据应用场景对请求加权予以最优调度,较好地降低了由于等待延迟而产生的系统开销。实验结果表明,系统运行稳定,更新响应实时性高,能够较好地满足用户需求,而且更新调度算法使系统各项指标均好于传统的FCFS算法。

Development healthcare PC and multimedia software for improvement of health status and exercise habits

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness of home healthcare products and multimedia software, and suggest ways to stimulate their use by analyzing the effect of a consistent awareness of one’s health status on the change in one’s exercise habits and health-improvement activities. To examine the difference in the level of interest in health and the amount of exercise between a group of individuals that consistently utilized a personalized health management program using a Home healthcare PC with a workstation and a group of individuals who did not, a 16-week study was conducted on 143 male and female adults residing in the Gyeonggnam region. Pedometers were provided to measure the amount of exercise, and a survey was conducted to examine the changes in the awareness of health-improvement activities. The group of individuals who regularly checked and managed their health status showed a statistically significant increase in the number of steps they took, compared to the group who did not. In addition, a group that utilized the Home healthcare PC showed an increase in the behavior of seeking health counseling and exchanging information about health. This implies that the use of the Home healthcare PC draws users’ attention to their health status and increases the motivation to exercise. The use of a Home healthcare PC not only acts as a red flag for the health of the users but also provides a bio-feedback effect. Therefore this system will play an effective role in prevention and post-incidence management of metabolic syndromes by motivating the users to systemically and independently manage their health at home, and to exercise or carry out health-improvement activities.     

BUSINESS APPLICATIONS OF ISDN

Although ISDN has gotten off to a slow start in the US, there are myriad industries—including banking, law enforcement, and insurance—that could benefit from the integration of voice, video, and data.     

ISDN and the Internet

Current integrated services digital networks (ISDN) can provide subscribers with access to the Internet and can support variable data rate connections between Internet switching nodes. This paper describes how ISDN and the Internet can be further integrated and communication capabilities improved by expanding the role of ISDN switching centers to include certain packet switching functions. Enhancements are identified that allow narrowband ISDN (N-ISDN) to support full motion video in addition to voice and data communications. These enhancements, along with the further integration of ISDN and the Internet, would facilitate a smooth transition from N-ISDN to broadband (B-ISDN).

The coming of ISDN

Integrated Services Digital Network, or ISDN, is the latest catch phrase in the field of telecommunications. Much effort has been put into establishing a standard for this new technology, but still more remains before the dream of a seamless communications network will be realized. This paper discusses the process taking place and the problems that this new technology faces. First, an overview of ISDN technology is given: its development, concepts, and capabilities. Then, we examine the major obstacles facing ISDN implementation, with a comparison of the pros and cons of some features. Finally, The technology is considered from an information manager's point of view: how can a manager prepare for the arrival of a mature technology?

Handling packet services within ISDN

The 144kbit/s ISDN user access provides a useful tool for data communications, especially if the packet switching mode is adopted. The long-term wide diffusion of packet services and the related growth of packet data traffic require a corresponding increase of network throughput capabilities. In this paper a new protocol architecture for an end-to-end packet bearer service within ISDN is described, and some of the implications of customer installation and central office design are discussed. The problem of more effective user-network interface protocols for the handling of packet switched calls is also discussed. The efficient and cost effective gathering and handling of data traffic requires modifications of the present signalling procedures in order to produce the integrated handling of ISDN calls. The whole system is based on the multiplexing over reliable transmission trunks, of layer 2 frames both in the user-network interface and between exchanges; a central role is played by the signalling system N.7 in the call set up phase. With a little increase in processing capability a substantial saving of bandwidth is possible in a fully digital environment. In particular a set of proposals for the improvement of the ISDN user-network signalling protocols is discussed in order to facilitate the call handling integration and to allow a step forward towards the introduction of packet capabilities into the existing equipment designed for circuit call switching.

The paper sets out some of the current developments in this area, with an emphasis on British Telecom's pilot Integrated Services Digital Network.
