A long-term polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) monitoring study was conducted fortwo moderately impacted freshwater streams in Kentucky. Streamwater, sediment, and fish were analyzed for Aroclors 1248, 1254, and 1260 during 1988-2005. Only 8 of 263 water samples showed detectable PCBs. The low occurrences of PCB detections in streamwater indicated that PCBs were transitory in the water column, rapidly mobilizing into biotic and sediment compartments. One component of this study focused on species-specific patterns of PCB residues in fish, especially the green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus), longear sunfish (L. megalotis), bluegill (L. macrochirus), and stoneroller minnow (Campostoma anomalum). Stoneroller minnows had higher PCB concentrations and increased frequency of detection when compared to sport fish. Aroclor 1248 was detected 80% of the time in stoneroller minnows from Big Bayou creek, whereas it was only detected in 25-39% of sport fish. In comparison, Aroclors 1254 and 1260 in sport fish were detected 49-69% of the time. These results indicate that higher chlorinated PCB congeners found in Aroclors 1254 and 1260 were not as readily metabolized and excreted by sport fish. No relationships were found between sunfish age and PCB concentrations, which demonstrated that sunfish exposed to low PCB contamination can effectively regulate PCBs, regardless of age. In addition, at low PCB levels (<0.50 microg/g), green sunfish body burden did not correlate with lipid content. A certain PCB threshold concentration, > or = 1.00 microg/g, must be exceeded before correlations between PCB body burden and lipid content are observed. These results indicate that, at least for species such as the sunfish, the use of the octanol-water partition coefficient (Kow) under low-level PCB exposure would appear to have little predictive value. Studies by Sanborn et al. (1975) found the green sunfish to be particularly adept at metabolizing organochlorine compounds and PCBs. This field study supports their laboratory findings. Green sunfish may have an enhanced P450 system, or due to low body lipid content, more effectively shunt PCBs into metabolic pathways that detoxify these compounds. 相似文献

The effects of feeding different sources and quantities of Cu to heifers were evaluated in a 211-d experiment. Forty crossbred predominantly Brahman x Hereford heifers averaging 13.5 mo of age and 301 kg were initially depleted of Cu. The depletion diet was fed for 70 d and consisted of low Cu and high antagonist minerals, Fe, S, and Mo at 1000 mg/kg, 0.5%, and 5 mg/kg (dry basis), respectively. On d 71, heifers continued to receive the antagonistic minerals and were allotted equally to five Cu treatments: 1) control, no additional Cu source; 2) 8 mg of Cu/kg from CuSO4; 3) 16 mg of Cu/kg from CuSO4; 4) 8 mg of Cu/kg from Cu lysine; and 5) 16 mg of Cu/kg from Cu lysine. When no notable change in concentration of Cu in the liver was observed, d 169, a second diet was formulated. The heifers were fed the same Cu treatments, but S and Mo were removed and Fe was lowered to 50 mg/kg. This diet was then fed for the final 42 d of the experiment. In addition to performance, concentrations of Cu, Fe, and Zn in the plasma and liver, plasma ceruloplasmin, hemoglobin, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity of neutrophils and lymphocytes, and a cell mediated immune response (phytohemagglutinin-P, PHA) were measured. Heifers in this study had increased growth over time, but there were no treatment differences for growth and average daily gain. Liver and plasma Cu concentrations were not greatly influenced by different supplemental Cu sources. However, compared with other treatments, Cu lysine (16 mg/kg) increased liver Cu in cattle that were deficient and tended to increase plasma Cu in animals that were marginally deficient in Cu. Iron concentrations decreased over time in liver and plasma, but there was no difference in Fe and Zn concentrations in liver and plasma among treatments. Differences in ceruloplasmin and hemoglobin concentrations were significant over time but not among treatments. The SOD activity in neutrophils did not change over time, but SOD activity of lymphocytes increased over time. For the PHA immune response test, there was no effect of time or a time by treatment interaction. These data suggest that all Cu sources were available, but Cu at 16 mg/kg from Cu lysine was more beneficial than were other sources and particularly for heifers with low Cu status. 相似文献

Concentrations of 15 VOCs including 1,3-butadiene, benzene, and styrene were measured in a wide range of urban microenvironments, viz: homes, offices, restaurants, pubs, department stores, coach and train stations, cinemas, libraries, laboratories, perfume shops, heavily trafficked roadside locations, buses, trains, and automobiles. For most target VOCs-including 1,3-butadiene and benzene-mean concentrations at heavily trafficked roadside locations were exceeded by those in automobiles and were comparable to those in pubs and train stations. With regard to indoor-outdoor relationships in homes, this study revealed higher mean indoor concentrations, no correlation between simultaneously measured indoor and outdoor concentrations, and significantly different patterns of diurnal variation. Thus-in poorly ventilated buildings-indoor emission source strength is considered a more significant influence on VOC concentrations than infiltration of outdoor air. In the six smoking homes studied, environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) was found to make a substantial contribution to concentrations of 1,3-butadiene. This finding was based on the significantly higher concentrations detected in smoking compared to nonsmoking homes, the significant correlation between 1,3-butadiene concentrations and those of 3-ethenylpyridine (an ETS marker), factor analysis, and the results of a source apportionment exercise based on ratios of 1,3-butadiene to 3-ethenylpyridine. 相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were simultaneously measured in air and surface seawater between 49 degrees N and 25 degrees S in the open Atlantic Ocean. Elevated concentrations of PAHs (sigma10 PAHs approximately 1.4-2.5 ng m(-3) air, and 0.7-1 ng L(-1) seawater) occurred in the Biscay Bay and off the northwest coast of Africa. The unexpectedly high concentrations off NW Africa were discussed assessing the possible contribution of the emerging oil industry along the African shore, the role of biomass burning and natural sources of PAHs. In the southern Atlantic, concentrations of PAHs were close to detection limits (sigma10 PAHs approximately 0.02-0.5 ng m(-3) air, and 0.06-0.5 ng L(-1) seawater) and showed decreasing trends with increasing latitudes. Correlations of PAHs' partial pressures versus inverse temperature were not significant in contrast to results for polychlorinated biphenyls from the same transect. This could have been due to the importance of ongoing primary sources and the shorter atmospheric life-times of PAHs. Air-water fugacity ratios (fa/fw) were calculated for selected compounds. They were close to 1 for fluoranthene and pyrene in remote open ocean areas suggesting air-water partitioning near equilibrium. Ratios for anthracene and phenanthrene were < 0.3 in the remote tropical Atlantic, suggesting net volatilization. 相似文献

Diffuse sources of human fecal pollution allow for the direct discharge of waste into receiving waters with minimal or no treatment. Traditional culture-based methods are commonly used to characterize fecal pollution in ambient waters, however these methods do not discern between human and other animal sources of fecal pollution making it difficult to identify diffuse pollution sources. Human-associated quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) methods in combination with low-order headwatershed sampling, precipitation information, and high-resolution geographic information system land use data can be useful for identifying diffuse source of human fecal pollution in receiving waters. To test this assertion, this study monitored nine headwatersheds over a two-year period potentially impacted by faulty septic systems and leaky sanitary sewer lines. Human fecal pollution was measured using three different human-associated qPCR methods and a positive significant correlation was seen between abundance of human-associated genetic markers and septic systems following wet weather events. In contrast, a negative correlation was observed with sanitary sewer line densities suggesting septic systems are the predominant diffuse source of human fecal pollution in the study area. These results demonstrate the advantages of combining water sampling, climate information, land-use computer-based modeling, and molecular biology disciplines to better characterize diffuse sources of human fecal pollution in environmental waters. 相似文献

A probabilistic model called the potential source contribution function (PSCF) has been used to estimate atmospheric source regions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), chlorinated pesticides, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to the Great Lakes. This model allows us to map each compound's source region on a 0.5 degrees x 0.5 degrees latitude/longitude grid centered over the Great Lakes basin. PCBs primarily have urban sources, the strengths of which vary. Like PCBs, PAHs show a strong urban signature, but these compounds also seem to come from rural sites. The source regions of PAH become less distinct as the molecular weight of the compound increases. Since reactivity increases with PAH size, this diminishing trend may be an indication that atmospheric degradation plays a large role in PAH transport. The pesticides have the strongest source regions and are typically transported the farthest, often from areas distant from the Great Lakes basin. 相似文献

A summer air quality monitoring campaign focusing on daily variation of ultrafine (<180 nm in diameter) particle chemical characteristics was conducted in a typical urban site in Los Angeles during June-July 2006. Ultrafine particles (UFP) were collected weekly for two 3 h periods each day, one to capture the morning commute (06:00-09:00 PDT) (Pacific Daylight Time) and one to investigate photochemically altered particles (13:00-16:00 PDT). Samples were analyzed for ionic compounds, metals, trace elements, elemental carbon, and organic carbon. In addition, measurements of individual organic species and their variation with time of day at the urban site were conducted. The relative abundances of alkanes, PAH, and hopanes in the morning denote a strong influence of commute traffic emissions on ultrafine particle concentrations. By contrast, afternoon concentrations of oxygenated organic acids and sulfate rose, while other species were diluted by increased mixing height or lost due to increasing temperature. These are clear indicators that secondary photochemical reactions are a major formation mechanism of ultrafine aerosols in the afternoon. The concentrations of organic species originating from vehicular emissions measured in this study compare favorably to those from freeway-adjacent measurements by using CO2 concentrations to adjust for dilution, demonstrating the effectiveness of this tool for relating sites affected by vehicular emissions. 相似文献

We assessed whether biota occupying mountain streams accumulate and biomagnify remotely derived organic pollutants originating from atmospheric inputs to snowpack and glacial runoff and from marine sources introduced by migrating anadromous salmon. Several persistent organic pollutants including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), p,p'-dichloro-diphenyl-dichloroethylene, hexachlorobenzene, and trans-nonachlor were commonly detected in benthic invertebrates, salmon fry (Oncorhynchus spp.), and eggs of an aquatic passerine, the American dipper (Cinclus mexicanus) from the Chilliwack River watershed, British Columbia, Canada. Total PCBs and several organochlorines (OCs) biomagnified from benthic invertebrate composites to salmon fry to dipper eggs. Invertebrate samples generally did not differ significantly in contaminant burdens between the river main stem where salmon are more abundant and higher-elevation tributaries where the salmon density is lower. Concentrations of total OCs and total PCBs in dipper eggs were positively related to drainage basin area and collection year but not to elevation. No differences in PCB congener patterns existed between dipper egg samples from the Chilliwack watershed and other watersheds in southwestern British Columbia. However, principal component analysis revealed significant spatial differences in egg PCB congener patterns between the main Chilliwack River and the higher-elevation tributaries. This difference was primarily due to a greater occurrence of lower chlorinated PCB congeners (66 and 105) in dipper eggs collected from the tributaries and higher loadings of the more stable and persistent congeners (153, 138, 130, and 128) in eggs from the river main stem. The results suggest that atmospheric sources are the main contributor of contaminants detected in biota from the region and that biomagnification is a common pathway for accumulation in lotic predators such as the American dipper. 相似文献

Organic aerosols in urban and waste landfill of Algiers metropolitan area: occurrence and sources 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In both downtown Algiers and the waste landfill of Oued Smar, the concentrations of particulate organic compounds comprising n-alkanes, n-alkanoic acids, n-alkan-2-ones, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), oxygenated (OPAHs), and nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) in ambient air were measured from May 1998 to February 1999. All the components except OPAHs had a tendency to strongly increase in colder weather. Motor vehicles were found to be the main source of airborne particles in downtown Algiers, while the combustion and pyrolysis processes and bacterial activity seemed to concur to the air pollution at the Oued Smar waste landfill. The biogenic emission, which was restricted to the lighter fraction of the n-alkanes and n-alkanoic acids, appeared to contribute at a lesser extent. The in-situ generation of some OPAHs and NPAHs seemed to contribute to air pollution, especially during the summertime. As expected, the ambient concentrations of NPAHs and OPAHs were lower than those of their parent PAHs. The seasonal variations in ambient NPAH and OPAH concentrations are due partly to fluctuations of precursors including NOx, 03, and OH radicals. In general, the wintertime concentrations of the organic pollutants in Algiers were similar to those measured in Europe and especially over the Mediterranean Basin. Further investigations have been planned in order to obtain a thorough knowledge of the air pollution as well as the organic content of materials burning atthe Oued Smarwaste landfill. In particular, our concern will be addressed to sources of toxic components, to formulate strategies suitable for reducing health risk for the populations living in the region of Algiers. 相似文献

Environmental impacts of water use in global crop production: hotspots and trade-offs with land use 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Global crop production is causing pressure on water and land resources in many places. In addition to local resource management, the related environmental impacts of commodities traded along international supply chains need to be considered and managed accordingly. For this purpose, we calculate the specific water consumption and land use for the production of 160 crops and crop groups, covering most harvested mass on global cropland. We quantify indicators for land and water scarcity with high geospatial resolution. This facilitates spatially explicit crop-specific resource management and regionalized life cycle assessment of processed products. The vast cultivation of irrigated wheat, rice, cotton, maize, and sugar cane, which are major sources of food, bioenergy, and fiber, drives worldwide water scarcity. According to globally averaged production, substituting biofuel for crude oil would have a lower impact on water resources than substituting cotton for polyester. For some crops, water scarcity impacts are inversely related to land resource stress, illustrating that water consumption is often at odds with land use. On global average, maize performs better than rice and wheat in the combined land/water assessment. High spatial variability of water and land use related impacts underlines the importance of appropriate site selection for agricultural activities. 相似文献

Passive polyethylene (PE) samplers were deployed at six locations within Narragansett Bay (RI, USA) to determine sources and trends of freely dissolved and gas-phase polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from May to November 2006. Freely dissolved aqueous concentrations of PAHs were dominated by fluoranthene, pyrene, and phenanthrene, at concentrations ranging from tens to thousands of pg/L. These were also the dominant PAHs in the gas phase, at hundreds to thousands of pg/m3. All stations mostly followed the same temporal trends, with highest concentrations (up to 7300 pg/L for sum PAHs) during the second of 11 deployments, coinciding with a major rainstorm. Strong correlations of sum PAHs with river flows and wastewater treatment plant discharges highlighted the importance of rainfall in mobilizing PAHs from a combination of runoff and atmospheric washout. PAH concentrations declined through consecutive deployments III to V, which could be explained by an exponential decay due to flushing with cleaner ocean water during tides. The estimated residence time (tres) of the PAH pulse was 24 days, close to an earlier estimate of tres of 26 days for freshwater in the Bay. Air-water exchange gradients indicated net volatilization of most PAHs closest to Providence. Further south in the Bay, gradients had changed to mostly net uptake of the more volatile PAHs, but net volatilization for the less volatile PAHs. Based on characteristic PAH ratios, freely dissolved PAHs at most sites originated from the combustion of fossil fuels; only two sites were at times affected by fuel spill-derived PAHs. 相似文献

As populations and demands for land-intensive products, e.g., cattle and biofuels, increase the need to understand the relationship between land use and consumption grows. This paper develops a production-based inventory of land use (i.e., the land used to produce goods) in the U.S. With this inventory an input-output analysis is used to create a consumption-based inventory of land use. This allows for exploration of links between land used in production to the consumption of particular goods. For example, it is possible to estimate the amount of cropland embodied in processed foods or healthcare services. As would be expected, agricultural and forestry industries are the largest users of land in the production-based inventory. Similarly, we find that processed foods and forest products are the largest users of land in the consumption-based inventory. Somewhat less expectedly this work finds that the majority of manufacturing and service industries, not typically associated with land use, require substantial amounts of land to produce output due to the purchase of food and other agricultural and wood-based products in the supply chain. The quantitative land use results of this analysis could be integrated with qualitative metrics such as weighting schemes designed to reflect environmental impact or life cycle impact assessment methods. 相似文献

This paper deals with the microbial production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), biodegradable thermoplastics which perform excellently as a material, from inexpensive renewable carbon sources. To date, with the help of genetic engineering techniques, it has become possible to design several types of PHAs with different compositions and to enhance the productivities of PHAs. In addition, molecular breeding of PHA biosynthesis enzymes has been demonstrated to improve polymer production. Mutant PHA synthases generated by an in vitro evolution technique have allowed the enhanced production and quality alteration of PHAs. Furthermore, use of inexpensive renewable carbon sources, such as plant oils, waste materials, and carbon dioxide, would be a key for a reduction in PHA production cost. 相似文献
