15,618 musical themes by 479 classical composers were selected from H. Barlow and S. Morgenstern's (1948, 1976) thematic dictionaries to determine whether the fame of a musical theme is a function of melodic originality and the composer's concurrent creative productivity and whether melodic originality is a function of historical time and composer's age. A citation measure was used to define the fame of the themes, and a computerized content analysis of 2-note transition possibilities was used to operationalize melodic originality relative to both the repertoire and the zeitgeist at time of composition. The study controlled for form, medium, work size, competition, and the composer's lifetime productivity. A multiple regression analysis showed that thematic fame is an inverted-J function of repertoire melodic originality, a J-function of zeitgeist melodic originality, and a positive function of creative productivity. Repertoire melodic originality is a positive function of historical time and an inverted backwards- J function of the composer's age, whereas zeitgeist melodic originality is a positive linear function of the composer's age. Three of J. P. Guilford's tests of divergent thinking—Alternate Uses, Plot Titles, and Consequences—were completed by 60 college students and scored for ideational fluency and originality. The originality scores were reliable, and significant intercorrelations were found among the tests. However, when the effects of ideational fluency were partialed out of the originality scores, all reliabilities showed substantial decrements, and correspondingly, the interest correlations dropped to zero or showed a substantial decrement. Such results indicate that the reliability and convergent validity of the originality scores were a function of individual differences in ideational fluency rather than originality. Evaluates the originality and value of 4 principal feminist therapies and theories proposed by I. G. Foder (1974), the Feminist Counseling Collective (1975), B. R. Dubois (1976), and J. B. Miller (1976). Their originality is analyzed by examining the extent to which the theory and the therapy depart from the Freudian, humanist, and behavioral models. Scientific and social criteria are used to assess their value as psychotherapy for women. Analysis suggests that the feminist models studied are not distinct psychotherapeutic systems. Their originality is that they identify the status and roles of women as determinants of women's problems and as essential elements to be worked on in the therapeutic process. Only the model proposed by Fodor is shown to have value both as a theory and a therapy; the weakness of the others is their generality. Administered the California Psychological Inventory (CPI) to 54 male undergraduates who had been elected to Phi Beta Kappa, 67 undergraduates of approximately equal intellectual ability who had not been elected, and 87 unselected undergraduates. Significant differences were found between groups on all comparisons except one. Phi Beta Kappa Ss had higher scores for responsibility, socialization, and self-control compared with the 2 other groups. The non-Phi Beta Kappa high achievers were characterized by conscientiousness, industry, and dependability. Phi Beta Kappa Ss were not particularly interested in ideas or cultural pursuits, not particularly tolerant or empathic, but were stable, pragmatic, and task-oriented; these Ss' scores on a creativity regression equation suggest that the sources of originality, innovation, and change may lie elsewere (i.e., in the unselected sample). To understand when and why mood states influence creativity, the authors developed and tested a dual pathway to creativity model; creative fluency (number of ideas or insights) and originality (novelty) are functions of cognitive flexibility, persistence, or some combination thereof. Invoking work on arousal, psychophysiological processes, and working memory capacity, the authors argue that activating moods (e.g., angry, fearful, happy, elated) lead to more creative fluency and originality than do deactivating moods (e.g., sad, depressed, relaxed, serene). Furthermore, activating moods influence creative fluency and originality because of enhanced cognitive flexibility when tone is positive and because of enhanced persistence when tone is negative. Four studies with different mood manipulations and operationalizations of creativity (e.g., brainstorming, category inclusion tasks, gestalt completion tests) support the model. The extent to which groups are creative has wide implications for their overall performance, including the quality of their problem solutions, judgments, and decisions. To further understanding of group creativity, we integrate the motivated information processing in groups model (De Dreu, Nijstad, & Van Knippenberg, 2008) with work on epistemic social tuning (Lunn, Sinclair, Whitchurch, & Glenn, 2007). Three propositions were advanced: (a) Groups produce more ideas when members have high rather than low epistemic motivation, especially when members also have a prosocial rather than pro-self motivation; (b) these ideas are more original, appropriate, or feasible when a group norm favors originality, appropriateness, or feasibility; and (c) originality is valued more in individualistic cultures (e.g., the Netherlands), whereas appropriateness is valued more in collectivist cultures (e.g., Korea). Four studies involving 3-person groups generating ideas supported these propositions: Epistemic motivation (mild vs. intense time pressure; presence vs. absence of process accountability) stimulated production and originality, especially when prosocial rather than pro-self motives were present and participants were Dutch or originality norms were experimentally primed. When appropriateness norms were primed or participants were Korean, epistemic motivation stimulated production and appropriateness, especially when prosocial rather than pro-self motives were present. This study hypothesized that creative thinking can help predict the process of resilience, manifested as subjective well-being despite exposure to adversity, either directly or with moderation of personality and demographic variables. Eighty survivors of hurricane Katrina who have lost their homes were asked to respond to measures of creative thinking, perception of adversity, well-being, a short personality inventory, and a demographic questionnaire. Supplementary qualitative exploration of 17 participants’ experiences augmented understanding within contextual framework. Findings suggest that originality and flexibility are significant predictors of well-being when personality traits and demographic variables are taken into account. Specifically, originality was found to be a significant predictor for extroversion, which was a significant predictor of life satisfaction measure. In addition, flexibility and originality were significant predictors of clinical stress and life satisfaction for the African American participants but not for the European American participants; originality and flexibility were also significant predictors of resilience for participants reporting greater income disparity. Triangulation of interviews with these findings further supports the notion that manifestations of creative thinking as resilience are likely moderated by SES, culture and social structure, and might be masked under condition of social privilege and prevalence of resources.
