The paper explores the idea of architecture and Occidentalism in the writings of building journals and illustrated magazines in the early twentieth century. More specifically, it examines how images of architecture, buildings and landscapes of the “West” and the “non-West” were used as key tropes to construct particular imaginaries and moral claims at a specific time and space: republican Shanghai and colonial Hong Kong from the mid-1920s to the late 1930s. Central to these developments was the emergence of new image-making practices that were made available by modern printing technologies, which led to a surge of production and circulation of images in the popular press. As a salient representation of modernity, progress and achievements of “civilizations,” images of architecture came to capture the attention of architects and builders, cultural producers and the fast-growing middle-class reading public in these metropolises. The exploration of these representational practices raises several questions: What kinds of assumptions about the “West” and the “non-West” were associated with these architectural images at this time? What kinds of new knowledge did the authors of these articles seek to produce through their experimentation with new visual and textual strategies? How did these representations relate to and differ from those in the more authoritative architectural historiographies? Finally, if these narrative productions about the West can be seen as processes of Occidentalism, what new historical insights do they offer?  相似文献

Abstract

The proto-sociologist Wilhelm Heinrich Riehl is best known in architectural history for the popularity that his organicist-functionalist dictum of “building from the inside out” received in early twentieth-century German architectural culture. However, less is known about Riehl’s own writing on architecture in the context of his sociological theories. This paper discusses the importance of Riehl’s thoughts on domestic architecture in giving theoretical elaboration to what, in the mid-nineteenth century, was a growing intellectual concern over the social position of workers. As the “worker” emerged as a distinct social type, and workers’ welfare registered as an increasingly pressing issue, Riehl’s call for a sociologically oriented understanding of architecture (capable of reforming the worker “from within”) significantly altered the terms of the debate over housing policy in Germany. In examining his theoretical elaboration of the task of social policy and the role of architecture within it, this paper reads Riehl’s work as a prelude to a new kind of logic about architecture’s social agency that would come to underpin modern housing reform.  相似文献

Abstract

Recent postmodern suspicion of truth, objectivity, and rationality has radically transformed our understanding of architecture and its relationship to politics. In this paper, I draw upon Hilary Putnam (1981), Nelson Goodman (1968), and Satya Mohanty (1997), who propose a sophisticated account of objectivity by reexamining the “hard” sciences, and by interpreting them as complex social practices. Building upon these writers, I argue that our subjective experiences of architecture are rational. As an alternative to both modern essentialism and postmodern skepticism, this paper defends a theory of objectivity that explains the relationship of architecture to political power without abandoning rational thought.  相似文献

Dark Matter     
Following material and theoretical encounters the author has with “dark matter” in her daily life in the Otway Ranges in south-east Australia, this article explores architecture’s complicity with climate change and possible paths for its redemption. Dark matter is simultaneously the building materials produced from crude oil, the production of which is a significant contributor to global warming, and speculative practices of resistance: “dirty” material explorations with dynamic, messy materials by a range of architects and theorists since the 1990s; Donna Haraway’s “compost” thought; and Philip Ross’s “mycotecture”, architecture made from mycelium. The paper argues, with reference to Felix Guattari’s ecosophy, that these “speculative fabulations” model new social and mental ecologies that could transform architectural practice.  相似文献

In the twenty-five years sinceFire Technology first appeared, the idea that a greater detailed quantitative understanding of fire phenomena will lead eventually to a more firesafe environment has received wide acceptance. The question is no longer “Are fundamental studies of fire science worthwhile?” but rather “What are the priorities?” “Just how is the new knowledge best used?” “What accuracy and detail are needed?” and “By what techniques are the new methods to be evaluated and approved?” This paper briefly presents a vista of twenty years of progress, introduces some detail on each of the above problems, and concludes with a vision of the future of firesafety engineering.  相似文献

Abstract

“Urban Threads” was an architectural installation that explored the ways in which those without land, money, and power shape the urban fabric, in particular the private territories that are staked out in the public realm and the spatial practices that connect them. All creative works in the installation were produced by women who were homeless in the context of a support group, TimeOut @ The Place, run by a collaboration of welfare agencies in Melbourne. Nine sites, located in minor lanes and alcoves in Melbourne's Central Activities District, each housed “bedrooms” and “WAR(d)robes,” a “dining room,” and a “Living Room.” The “Path of Most Resistance (and Least Distance)” was marked out between them. The installation was conceived of and curated by the author as part of a PhD by Creative Works. The question “to what extent can architecture be 'tactical' (de Certeau's definition)” is at the basis of the project.  相似文献

This article examines the relationship between “modern” aesthetics and ethics in the context of Rwandan architecture and urbanism. In Rwanda, global capital and the general desire for an improved life manifest in the built environment, and both urban high-rises and rural villages attempt to look like “modern” buildings from the northern hemisphere. The “modern” aesthetics take on the difficult task of dealing with memories of the past violence as an integral process of development. Using Rwandan housing projects as a case study, this article investigates the meanings, expectations, and possibilities for modern aesthetics.  相似文献

Abstract

Embedded in the culture of modern architecture is the directive that a façade ought to fit tightly around its building, like a well-fitting suit. “False façades,”“façadism,” and the “screen façade” have been derisive terms used by architects and critics to describe buildings whose façades appear either too big or too small for their buildings. Postmodernism changed this, so that façades relatively independent of their interiors were encouraged. The neo-modernism of the last two decades has integrated this “disconnected” façade into the practice of what otherwise is a revival of the system of the heroic period of the movement.  相似文献

Critical doubt is a hallmark of modern thought. This condition has profoundly affected the discipline and practices of architecture. In its most extreme forms, it has led to complete inertia, on the one hand, and a sense of unbounded relativism, begotten through unbridled activity, on the other. Yet there is little or no possibility of reasserting a set of canonical ideas or principles that might establish a secure ground for either architectural pedagogy or production. In response to similar theoretical debates in numerous disciplines, a “way out” has been suggested, somewhere between critical transcendentalism and deconstructive antimetaphysicism. Through a close reading of the architectural issues inherent in Dante's Divine Comedy—the last and perhaps greatest cathedral of the Middle Ages, according to Georges Duby—this article explores the potential of this path.  相似文献

This study investigates the gradual evolution of the idea of installation in three experimental exhibition pavilions designed before World War I by the German architect Bruno Taut. In collaboration with the critic Adolf Behne, Taut gradually transferred ideas from Expressionist painting to architecture and helped move his designs, and with it modern architecture more generally, from a focus on visual “objects,” to multisensory “experiences,” an idea that continues to resonate in modern installations today.  相似文献

The scientific articles and Indoor Air conference publications of the indoor air sciences (IAS) during the last 50 years are summarized. In total 7524 presentations, from 79 countries, have been made at Indoor Air conferences held between 1978 (49 presentations) and 2014 (1049 presentations). In the Web of Science, 26 992 articles on indoor air research (with the word “indoor” as a search term) have been found (as of 1 Jan 2016) of which 70% were published during the last 10 years. The modern scientific history started in the 1970s with a question: “did indoor air pose a threat to health as did outdoor air?” Soon it was recognized that indoor air is more important, from a health point of view, than outdoor air. Topics of concern were first radon, environmental tobacco smoke, and lung cancer, followed by volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde and sick building syndrome, house dust‐mites, asthma and allergies, Legionnaires disease, and other airborne infections. Later emerged dampness/mold‐associated allergies and today's concern with “modern exposures‐modern diseases.” Ventilation, thermal comfort, indoor air chemistry, semi‐volatile organic compounds, building simulation by computational fluid dynamics, and fine particulate matter are common topics today. From their beginning in Denmark and Sweden, then in the USA, the indoor air sciences now show increasing activity in East and Southeast Asia.  相似文献

Abstract

Issues concerning sexuality and gender are rarely addressed in the discourse of modern Turkish architecture. Given the gendered associations of domesticity, the architecture of the house provides the most obvious context to explore these issues. In the early years of the Turkish Republic, images of the modern house and modern, secular women were actively promoted by the architects and intellectuals of the new nation-state. Representations of women, which abound in popular journals but end up dispersed between the lines in contemporaneous architectural texts, often escape critical scrutiny. In general, only the imaginary figure of an asexual “ideal Turkish woman” is allowed to have legitimate entry to the discourse on modern Turkish culture. Here, I focus on the figuration of woman in architectural discourse with particular emphasis on a domestic reference in a book by smail Hakki Baltacp?u, a leading intellectual of the period. I argue that by containing an inadvertent reference to the figure of woman, Baltacp?u's text both introduces sexuality and exposes the lack of the feminine element in architectural discourse.  相似文献

This essay investigates the roots of a growing impass in contemporary architecture vis a vis the economic, technological, social and political developments of our advanced or late-capitalist society. It focuses upon architecture's apparently diminishing capacity to address our present human condition, yet argues that the problems responsible for the “crisis” of architectural thought and design in general have evolved as the result of historic processes, and therefore the impass can only partially be explained with the shortcomings of modern architecture or the ‘short sighted’ attitude of the architects themselves. Nevertheless, it also argues that architecture, in spite of its now rather limited transformative capacity, should persistently attempt to reveal, rather than mask or otherwise escape, its fundamental relatedness to material processes; that is, to the modes of production and consumption on which social and political power relations are predicated. To be able to do so, and thus to foster a more liberating “form” of human environment, the profession needs first of all a strong political self consciousness, while aiming at a practice of critical inquiry.  相似文献
