We evaluated eight synthetic predator odors and mongoose (Herpestes auropunctatus) feces for eliciting avoidance responses and/or reduced feeding by wild captured Hawaiian roof rats (Rattus rattus). In a bioassay arena, we recorded: (1) time until each rat entered the arena, (2) time elapsed until first eating bout, (3) time spent in each half of the arena, (4) number of eating bouts, and (5) consumption. Rats displayed a response to the predator odors in terms of increased elapsed time before initial arena entry and initial eating bout, a lower number of eating bouts, and less food consumption than in the respective control groups. The odor that produced the greatest differences in response relative to the control group was 3,3-dimethyl-1,2-dithiolane [from red fox (Vulpes vulpes) feces and mustelid anal scent gland]. Mongoose fecal odor produced different responses in four of the five variables measured while (E,Z)-2,4,5-trimethyl-3-thiazoIine (red fox feces) and 4-mercapto-4-methylpentan-2-one (red fox urine and feces) odors were different from the control group in three of the five variables measured. These laboratory responses suggest that wild Hawaiian roof rats avoid predator odors.  相似文献

The efficacy in feeding suppression trials with possums (Trichosorus vulpecula Kerr) of six synthetic odorous chemicals uniquely associated with various of the Mustelidae species and of the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) has been evaluated with respect to several proprietary repellents. The predator odors, two proprietary repellents, and two other repellent formulations (olive oil in petroleum jelly and a synthetic fermented egg odor cocktail) were applied as 5% w/v solutions in paraffin to the foliage ofPinus radiata seedlings and the extent of browse compared with that on seedlings treated with Treepel, an effective egg-based repellent already available commercially. All four of the mustelid predator odors [()-2-n-propylthietane, ()-3-n-propyl-1,2-dithiolane, 2,2-dimethylthietane, and 3,3-dimethyl-1,2-dithiolane] and the volatile compound from fox urine (3-isopentenyl methyl sulfide) were shown to be more or at least equally effective compared to Treepel. This was true also of one commercial repellent Gori, which contained bitrex and the synthetic fermented egg formulation. The most effective compounds will be evaluated when administered with adhesives and surfactants in the further development of possum repellents with longer field lives.  相似文献

Responses of Wild Norway Rats (Rattus norvegicus) to Predator Odors   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
If rats could be shown to avoid the odors of predators, then conservation managers could manipulate this behavior to exclude rats from important conservation sites. We evaluated the ability of six predator odors to elicit avoidance responses by wild-caught Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) from two New Zealand populations (Kapiti Island and North Island). Kapiti Island is free of mammalian predators, while the North Island has established populations of felids, canids, and mustelids. Three of the predator odors were real and three were synthesized volatile ingredients of real animal feces or urine. We compared the rats' responses to predator odors with their responses to three natural herbivore odors. We used a Y maze, and rats were offered the choice of an odor in one arm of the maze and distilled water in the other arm. Each choice arm was ducted at the entrance to remove air and the odor. We recorded: (1) the time until the rat left the first arm of the maze, (2) the time until the rat visited each arm, (3) the number of visits to each arm, (4) the amount of time spent in each arm, and (5) a total activity score for each rat. Kapiti rats showed an aversion to five of the six predator odors, despite never having encountered them before. Kapiti rats visited herbivore odors more often than carnivore odors and were less active in the presence of carnivore odors than they were when tested with herbivore odors. In addition, Kapiti rats approached some herbivore odors more quickly than they approached carnivore odors. North Island rats appeared to avoid cat urine, but despite being predator experienced, did not show a consistent aversion to the carnivore odors we tested. Both samples of rats, but particularly the North Island group, showed high individual variation. We conclude that predator odors are unlikely to be an effective management tool for all populations of this species of rat because of this high individual variability and the likelihood that each island population will differ in its responses to a given odor.  相似文献

We measured the heart rate (HR) and oxygen consumption ( ) of wapiti (Cervus elaphus canadensis) before, during, and after presentation of biologically irrelevant odors (pentane, thiophene, and a perfume), artificial predator odors (an ether extract of cougar feces, and PDT, a compound found in mustelid anal gland secretion), stale predator odors (dog feces and urine and fox urine, kept at ambient temperature for a few weeks), and fresh predator odors (wolf, coyote, and cougar feces and the odor of a dead coyote, kept frozen between collection and test). Overall, responses to odors were small compared to other stressful stimuli. Individual variability was high among scents and among wapiti, but two of the fresh predator odors (cougar and wolf feces) produced larger HR and responses than the other scents and were more often successful at producing responses. As a group, fresh predator odors produced larger tachycardias and elicited a larger number of significant HR responses than biologically irrelevant novel odors. although the two classes of odors did not differ in their effect on . Although several other studies have shown that ungulates have reduced feeding levels when their food is scented with predator odors, it is not clear if this is due to reduced palatability or antipredator behavior. This study is the first demonstration that a wild ungulate species reacted more strongly to predator odors than to other odors in a nonfeeding situation.  相似文献

Soil nutrient deficiencies pose a serious limitation to higher crop and forage yields in the Nigerian subhumid zone. Some of the deficiencies may be alleviated by using as a fertilizer a salt mined locally called Kanwa which is traditionally used as a cattle lick. Yields ofStylosanthes hamata cv Verano andS. guianensis cv Cook seed and dry matter increased with Kanwa application at different locations. The effect of Kanwa was enhanced when phosphorus was adequately supplied. Improvements to soil physical properties were proportional to the yield of the legume. The implications of good quality fodder and improved soil conditions in Agro-pastoral Systems in the Nigerian SHZ are discussed.  相似文献

Anacardic acids, alkyl phenolic acids excreted by tall glandular trichomes of the garden geranium, Pelargonium xhortorum, confer small-pest resistance. Up to 90% of the trichome exudate from mite-resistant P. xhortorum inbreds consists of an unusual anacardic acid with an unsaturated omega-5 (5) alkyl chain. As fatty acids are biochemical precursors to anacardic acids, we examined by GC the fatty acid composition of leaves, pedicels, petals, sepals, mature seeds, and glandular trichomes from pest-resistant and pest-susceptible Pelargonium inbred lines to determine the localization of 5-fatty acids within plant tissues. The fatty acid composition of lipid classes (galactolipids, phospholipids, and neutral lipids) extracted from glandular trichomes from mite-resistant pedicels were also examined. 5-Fatty acids (16:111 and 18:113) were found only in the glandular trichomes from pest-resistant geraniums (27.2% in trichomes of pedicels) and were localized predominantly in the phospho- and galactolipids (phosphatidylinositol, 25.9%; phosphatidylcholine, 18.2%; monogalactosyldiglyceride, 15.5%; and diglactosyldiglyceride, 14.0%).  相似文献

The significance of the alkyl group at the C-4 of (+)-trans-verbenyl acetate, which is the sex pheromone mimic of the American cockroach, was investigated. Seven alcohols possessing an ethyl, propyl, or dimethyl group at this position of the 6,6-dimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]heptane skeleton were synthesized and evaluated by behavioral assay. All of the alcohols were inactive, while three of four acetates of the 2-alcohols induced sexual behavior in male cockroaches at the 0.02 or 0.5 mg dosage level, either of which is many orders of magnitude higher than the threshold level of the natural sex pheromones (10–8 mg). Among the acetates, the compounds with a methyl group or an -oriented ethyl group at C-4 showed the highest activity. The reaction in dichloromethane at room temperature of the polyspirophosphazene copolymer {[NP(O2C12H8)]0.7[NP(OC5H4N)2]0.3} n (1) (O2C12H8=2,2dioxybiphenyl) with [Ru2( 6-p-cymene)2Cl4] gives the polymer supported organometallic complex {[NP(O2C12H8)]0.7[NP(OC5H4N-Ru( 6-p-cymene)Cl2)2]0.3} n (2). Similarly the chiral phosphazene {[NP(O2C20H12)]0.9[NP(OC5H4N)2]0.1} n (3) (O2C20H12=R-2,2-dioxy,11-binaphthyl) reacts with the appropriate amount of the Ru precursor to give the related polymeric complex {[NP(O2C20H12)]0.9[NP(OC5H4N)(OC5H4N-Ru( 6-p-cymene)Cl2]0.1} n (4) as an orange solid. Carrying out the reaction of 3 with the Ru precursor in acetone at room temperature using 0.35 equivalents of Ru per pyridine site, gives the crosslinked yellow material with formula {[NP(O2C20H12)]0.9[NP(OC5H5N)2]0.1[Ru( 6-p-cymene)Cl2]0.07]} n (5), that may contain cationic [Ru( 6-p-cymene)Cl]+ units trapped in the rigid interior of a chiral network.  相似文献

8-Hydroxygeraniol and its 8-O--d-glucoside have been found as trace components in the defensive secretions ofPlagiodera versicolora andGastrophysa viridula larvae. Anisotropic oxidation of crystallites of vanadyl pyrophosphate ((VO)2P2O7) has been demonstrated by Raman spectroscopy with samples having different microstructures. Oxidation of these samples by O2 produced X1 phase,- and-VOPO4 phases. The relative peak intensity of the X1 phase to the other phases correlated well with the ratio of the (100) plane to the side planes (surface area-basis). This correlation showed that the (100) plane was oxidized to X1 phase and the side planes to- and-VOPO4. For example, thin plate-like (VO)2P2O7, of which the (100) fraction is 98%, was oxidized almost exclusively to X1 phase. But when it was fractured into small plates to increase the side planes and then oxidized,- and-VOPO4 were detected in addition to the X1 phase. These results are consistent with our previous conclusion that the (100) plane of (VO)2P2O7 is selective, but side planes are non-selective for catalytic oxidation ofn-butane.  相似文献

A volatile kairomone of the two-spotted spider mite,Tetranychus urticae, elicits a searching response of the phytoseiid predatorAmblyseius potentillae, only when the predator is reared on a carotenoid-free diet. However, after addition of crystalline -carotene or vitamin A acetate to the predator's rearing diet this searching response was absent. Because vitamin A and -carotene are indispensable nutrients for diapause induction, the carotenoid-deficient predators increase their fitness by searching for two-spotted spider mites, when other spider mites are unavailable. Two-spotted spider mites, among others, contain the carotenoids required for diapause induction, but are an inferior prey due to the dense webbing they produce. When the predators have carotenoids at their disposal, they do better by searching for other spider mites that are more profitable in terms of reproductive success. Such a prey is the European red spide mite,Panonychus ulmi. The volatile kairomone of this prey elicits a searching response of the predator whether it has a carotenoid deficiency or not.  相似文献

The conversion of methanol to hydrocarbons using composite catalysts comprising physical mixtures of the zeolite H-ZSM-5 with group 13 oxides (-Al2O3, -Ga2O3, In2O3, Tl2O3) is reported and discussed. The addition of -Ga2O3 at 400 °C gives a marked enhancement in the yield of C8 and C9 aromatic compounds, whereas the addition of -Al2O3 has no effect and both the In2O3/H-ZSM-5 and Tl2O3/H-ZSM-5 are inactive. At 300 °C, a marked enhancement in the yield of aromatic hydrocarbons is observed for -Ga2O3 and In2O3, and a less marked enhancement is observed with Tl2O3 and -Al2O3. In particular, the addition of In2O3 to H-ZSM-5 as a simple physical mixture gives a significant enhancement in catalyst activity at 300 °C. The effect of the Si:Al atomic ratio of H-ZSM-5 is also investigated for the -Ga2O3/H-ZSM-5 composite catalysts and the enhancement in aromatic yield is observed with all the ratios investigated but the optimal -Ga2O3/H-ZSM-5 ratio is dependent upon the Si:Al ratio. Pretreatment or co-feeding of hydrogen decreases the yield of the aromatic products. The results are explained in terms of an active site formed by the interaction between the oxide and the zeolite.  相似文献

-Pinene and ethanol were released in the approximate proportions 1:0.1, 1:0.9 and 1:9 (at 21°C). Ethanol, released in the range of 3–279 mg/day, generally synergized the attraction of T. piniperda to -pinene (30 mg/day at 21°C), although attraction to the mixtures varied within and between years. The low release rate of ethanol together with -pinene attracted a significantly higher number of beetles than -pinene alone in 1995, April of 1996, and in 1997. Lures with the medium release rate of ethanol were the most attractive only in March of 1996. The high dose of ethanol significantly synergized attraction to -pinene in 1995 and 1997. The variable attraction of T. pinipeda to ethanol and -pinene at various release rates and proportions may be due to the temperature dependent nature of beetle antennal sensitivity. At ambient temperatures of 10–13°C. T. piniperda was most attracted to the lures with -pinene and high release rates of ethanol, at 14–17°C it was most attracted to those with medium release rates of ethanol, and at 18°C and higher it was most attraacted to those with low release rates of ethanol.  相似文献

Beta-cyclodextrin (-CD) complexes of CODPtX 2 (COD=1.5-cyclooctadiene.X=Cl, Br, and I) have been prepared and employed as hydrosilylation catalysts. When used in cross-linkable, silicone-containing systems, these catalysts provide a long shelf stability at ambient temperature but cure rapidly at elevated temperature. These systems thus have the property of command-cure. Extensive analytical investigations were undertaken to develop reproducible synthetic methodology for the preparation of inclusion compounds free of surface contamination of the guest platinum compound. Water plays a key role in the synthesis of such platinum inclusion compounds. Dried -CD CODPtX 2 compounds can be washed with organic solvent to remove residual uncomplexed CODPtX 2, while organic solvent washing of wet inclusion compounds results in removal of the guest from the -CD cavity. Examination of these catalysts in curable silicone systems is described.  相似文献

Tree killing and saprophytic bark beetles exert important ecological and economic roles in North American spruce forests. Chemical signaling among bark beetles, and responses by associate insects such as predators and competitors, have significant effects on the population dynamics and ecology of this community. Synthetic pheromones of primary (tree killing) and secondary (saprophytic) bark beetle species and blank controls were tested using multiple funnel and lower stem flight traps in white spruce forests in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota. Six phloeophagous and four predaceous species were collected with significant attraction by the bark beetles Dryocoetes affaber, Dryocoetes autographus, and Polygraphus rufipennis, and the predatory checkered beetles (Coleoptera: Cleridae) Thanasimus dubius and Enoclerus nigrifrons. In general, trap catches to synthetic lures resembled the species composition obtained by felling trees and collecting emerging beetles in a companion study, although several species showed differing trends. Some cross attraction occurred among bark beetles and between bark beetles and predatory beetles. For example, P. rufipennis was abundant in traps baited with Dryocoetes spp. pheromones. Thanasimus dubius and E. nigrifrons were collected in significant numbers in traps baited with the pheromone of the spruce beetle (Dendroctonus rufipennis), frontalin plus -pinene. This is a new observation for E. nigrifrons. Attraction of T. dubius to the pheromones of at least three bark beetle species in the Great Lakes region, as well as to several southern and western species, reflects its role as a habitat specialist and feeding generalist. Several other important predators and competitors commonly obtained in pine forests in this region were not obtained in these spruce stands, either in response to synthetic pheromones of spruce colonizing beetles, or in host material colonized by these beetles. Potential differences in predator prey dynamics between spruce and pine ecosystems in the Great Lakes region are discussed.  相似文献

Volatiles released from fruiting bodies of the polypores Fomitopsis pinicola and Fomes fomentarius (Polyporaceae) were collected by entrainment and SPME techniques and analyzed by GC-MS. The most significant difference between the two species was found in the terpene fraction. F. fomentarius emitted a more complex blend, with more than 10 sesquiterpenes. During the sporulating phase, the release of (R)- and (S)-oct-1-en-3-ol, octan-3-one, and some sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (mainly -barbatene) increased in F. pinicola, whereas in F. fomentarius the release of octan-3-one, cis-furanoid linalool oxide, -phellandrene, -myrcene, and several sesquiterpene hydrocarbons increased. -Barbatene was identified for the first time in fungi. Chopping of the fruiting bodies altered the odor composition more in F. fomentarius than in F. pinicola. Five volatiles giving a typical fungal odor (rac-oct-1-en-3-ol, nonan-1-ol, rac-octan-3-ol, octan-1-ol, and octan-3-one) were tested for insect attraction in the field. Females of the three wood-living generalist beetles Malthodes fuscus, Anaspis marginicollis, and A. rufilabris and both sexes of the moth Epinotia tedella were attracted to rac-oct-1-en-3-ol. The generalist predator on fungus-insects Lordithon lunulatus was attracted to rac-oct-1-en-3-ol and octan-3-one in combination. Previous results regarding the host-specific attraction of beetles to the odors emanating from chopped fruiting bodies of F. pinicola and F. fomentarius are discussed in the light of this investigation.  相似文献

A series of Al2O3supported SO 4 2– /ZrO2 superacid catalysts (named SZ/Al2O3) were prepared by a precipitation method and their catalytic behavior for nbutane isomerization at low temperature in the absence of H2 and at high temperature in the presence of H2 was studied in this paper. The catalytic activities of some of these catalysts were enhanced significantly at both low and high temperatures. At 250°C after 6 h on stream, the steady activity of the most active sample, 60%SZ/Al2O3, is about two times higher than that of conventional SZ. The texture properties of catalysts were studied by the methods of XRD and the adsorption of N2. Experimental evidence of IR of adsorbed pyridine indicates that the significant activity enhancements of SZ/Al2O3 catalysts are caused by the increasing of the amount of strong acid sites.  相似文献

Short-range attraction/feeding stimulation of male Mediterranean fruit flies [Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), (Diptera: Tephritidae)] to a stem extract of a host plant,Litchi chinensis Sonn. (Sapindaceae), and to milky exudates from stems of nonhost plants,Ficus retusa L. andF. benjamina L. (Moraceae), were attributed to the presence of the sesquiterpene -copaene. The presence of -copaene in the milky exudate from stems ofF. benghalensis L. is also suggested as eliciting similar behavioral responses in male medflies. The presence of minor quantities of -ylangene in the plants and its contributory effects to the behavioral response of male medflies is discussed. Short-range attraction/feeding stimulation of male medflies to equal amounts of -ylangene-free -copaene samples (94.5%+), prepared from -copaene-enriched angelica seed oil and copaiba oil, respectively, showed no difference in intensity of response. -Ylangene elicited a slightly less intense response for male medflies than -copaene.Names of products in this paper are included for the benefit of the reader and do not imply endorsement or preferential treatment by USDA.  相似文献

Several Scandinavian forest insects,Hylurgops palliatus, Tomicus piniperda, andTrypodendron domesticum (Coleoptera: Scolytidae),Rhizophagus ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Rhizophagidae) andPollenia spp. (Diptera: Calliphoridae) were attracted to window traps baited with ethanol and placed on Scots pine trees (Pinus sylvestris) in May–June, 1986. Release of ethanol at increasing relative rates of 0, 0.01, 0.1 and 1.0 (800 mg/day) from the window traps on trees in 1987 causedH. palliatus, T. domesticum, andR. ferrugineus to be increasingly attracted, whileT. piniperda was equally attracted at both 0.1 and 1.0 rates. The attraction ofT. piniperda to ethanol was weak compared to attraction to a monoterpene mix, (±)--pinene, (+)-3-carene, terpinolene. The terpene mix plus ethanol was significantly more attractive toH. palliatus than ethanol alone, but terpenes significantly reduced the attraction ofT. domesticum to ethanol. Baiting of pipe traps with a series of short-chain alcohols (methanol to hexanol) each alone showed that ethanol was greatly preferred byH. palliatus, T. domesticum, andR. ferrugineus over alcohols of one more or one less carbon, while longer-chain alcohols were not attractive. However,Glischrochilus hortensis (Col.: Nitidulidae) was attracted only to propanol. A series of 10-fold increasing release rates of ethanol (0.0001-1.0, where 1.0=800 mg/day) with either a low or high release of the terpene mix had various effects on the sexes during their attraction to pipe traps and subsequent entering of holes. Release of (–)-verbenone at 0.25 mg/day had no significant effect onH. palliatus orR. ferrugineus attraction to ethanol, but the response ofT. domesticum to ethanol was reduced. Several theories on olfactory mechanisms of host selection byT. piniperda are integrated and placed in ecological perspective.  相似文献
