Tolerance of intracular lenses is partly depending of the finishing quality of their different constituents. Several types of intraocular lenses have been studied with scanning electron microscopy: some imperfections of loop insertions and edge finish have been visualized.     

Possibilities and limits of electron microscopy (author's transl)

This review evaluates the electron microscopical imaging techniques used today. Reviewed are transmission method, indirect imaging of surfaces by replica and surface decoration, and direct imaging of surfaces by means of scanning, emission, and mirror electron microscopy. For each method the respective limit of resolution and the possibilities of application are described. Especially, the methods of high-resolution and of high-voltage electron microscopical techniques will be pointed out as being actual means of investigation stressing electron microscopy up to the limits given by physics and technique.     

Frequency of pathological liver changes in biopsy and autopsy samples (author's transl)

It is the purpose of this study to point out the epidemiological importance of pathoanatomical records. In this connections, it is necessary to pay attention to different prerequisites for documentation, especially to an agreement on diagnostical nomenclature. Liver alterations and liver diseases are given as an example for valueing the relevance of both bioptic and autoptic materials for epidemiological purposes. By means of about 8,500 liver biopsies and 1,000 autopsies from the same territorial region the type and frequency of the different pathological alterations of the liver are compiled. Their frequency differs about ten fold. The epidemiological value obviously lies in specially aimed investigations; on the other hand, autoptic examinations are more representative and therefore of higher general reliability and greater epidemiological value.     

Dumping-prophylaxis (author's transl)

The dumping syndrome is due to a vigorous reflex distension of the jejunum, caused by the stomach violently evacuating its contents. The aim of treatment is to overcome the drastic evacuation by restoring the rhythmic peristalsis of the stomach (eukinetics). This can be achieved by a special diet. Every meal should begin with well chewed solids (pulp) and avoid all fluids. With a well organised medical staff a complete success can be achieved. Surgical measures in Dumping can be avoided.     

Enteritis caused by atypical Yersinia (author's transl)

For the first time in the Federal Republic of Germany Yersinia species "frederiksenii", "kristensenii", "serovar 0 : 6" (each once) and "serovar 0 : 5" (twice) were found in the stool of 5 patients with gastroenteritic complaints. Serum agglutinins against these species could not be demonstrated. Other enteropathogenic microorganisms were excluded microscopically, by culture and serologically. These Yersinia isolates were resistant against penicillin G, ampicillin, carbenicillin, ticarcillin, and cefalotin.
