Discusses a model for the development and implementation of a psychology training center shared by clinical and counseling psychology programs. The history of the psychological services center and its administrative structure are reviewed, and professional issues such as training and service are discussed. Results of an attitudinal survey completed by students show that they considered their experience at the center to have played a positive role in their professional development. Discusses the 1st school psychology training in the US at New York University (NYU) in 1929 and attempts to place it in the historical context from which clinical psychology and school psychology emerged. The history, philosophy, and economic struggles of the current NYU programs are described. It is contended that 3 coexisting current programs, a PhD, PsyD, and Certificate program, shared strong commitment to basic psychological theory, an intensive psychodynamically grounded assessment base, a client-oriented philosophy, and an eclectic curriculum that also includes behavioral, consultative, and systems orientations. Discusses a case study of psychological consultation provided by a university counseling center working with university administrators in a student housing setting to evaluate the psychological impact of design changes in the communal dining area of a high-rise dormitory. Two research strategies were employed in the evaluation: (a) A self-report measure of satisfaction was administered to a total of 564 students in a pre-postchange format, and (b) behavioral changes were assessed through behavioral observations of 676 students in changed and unchanged areas of the setting. Results indicate that the design changes were highly successful in terms of improving the opportunity for social contact, increasing privacy, and diminishing the overall institutional appearance of the setting. A vital and continuing issue for the American Psychological Association (APA) and for all professional associations concerns the relationships among its various constituencies. For psychology, these constituencies are exemplified in part by the four directorates: Education, Practice, Public Interest, and Science. Before considering how these domains of psychology can and should be interdependent, it is instructive to step back and examine similar challenges that face an organization with a much broader mandate. This article does that by focusing on the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), as it deals with issues that affect basic science, applied science, science education, and public policy. AIM: To determine if impaired motion sensitivity is a significant predictor of subsequent field loss in glaucoma suspects. METHOD: A population based prospective study; a 5 year follow up of all glaucoma suspects who had been identified from a population based random sample survey in the west of Ireland. 78 glaucoma suspects whose visual field function was annually measured by Henson CFS 2000 and for whom data on family history of glaucoma, ocular status, and motion impairment had been recorded. Visual field loss was defined as Henson visual field survival score of 94 or less. RESULTS: 18 people developed visual field loss in at least one eye. Motion impairment at baseline was associated with a 2-18 times greater risk of development of the visual field loss (p < 0.001). This association was independent of sex, family history of glaucoma, intraocular pressure, and C/D ratio at baseline. The Cox's proportional hazards regression analysis confirmed the above results after adjustment for age and the C/D ratio. CONCLUSION: Motion impairment is an independent predictor of visual field loss in glaucoma suspects, although it is not clear how long motion impairment precedes visual field loss.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: Childhood overweight is an increasing public health concern. This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of overweight in elementary school children in New York State and to identify characteristics associated with child fatness. METHODS: Weight, height, triceps skinfold, midarm circumference, and a 24-hour dietary recall were taken on 1797 second- and fifth-grade students from 51 randomly selected schools in New York State outside of New York City. Parents completed a brief questionnaire. RESULTS: In comparison with 1974 and 1980 national reference data, up to twice the expected percentages of children had values above the 85th, 90th, and 95th percentiles for body mass index, triceps skinfold, and arm fat area. Regression analyses suggested that children who tended to be fatter were members of low socioeconomic status, two-parent (but not single-parent) households; those with few or no siblings; those who ate school lunch; and those who skipped breakfast. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that overweight is a problem among many elementary school children in New York State and that sociodemographic characteristics may be useful for targeting preventive efforts.  相似文献

This article introduces the Journal of Personality's special issue on the life voyage of Dodge Morgan who, in 1986 at the age of 54, sailed solo around the world in 150 days. Before the voyage, Morgan agreed to participate in an intensive psychological case study, the data for which provide the focus for this special issue. William Nasby and Nancy W. Read have organized the vast array of psychological data obtained from Morgan and produced a complex and illuminating interpretation of his life, drawing liberally from the five-factor trait model of personality and the life-story model of adult identity. This introduction provides a historical and intellectual context for Nasby and Read's study by considering the various ways in which personality psychologists have employed the case study in research and examining the many conceptual and methodological problems and possibilities that arise in the psychological study of the single case.  相似文献

Examined psychology board examining practices based on responses received from 28 statutory and 11 nonstatutory certification states. Examining practices varied widely among states. The modal pattern included an objective examination, an essay exam, and an interview. When 1 of the 3 modalities is omitted, it was more likely to be the essay than the interview (although interviews may be optional). Time limits on the American Association of State Psychology Boards exam ranged from 2 hrs to no limit and were less variable than were those for essay exams. Presents an account of the origin and development of psychology at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York from 1935 until 1970, the time when D. Katz, H. Helson, and W. Dennis served as department chairs. A comparison is made with City College of the City University of New York to determine the participation of graduated majors at both institutions in the field of psychology. OBJECTIVE: To determine the number, distribution, determinants, and health consequences of occupational injuries among working adolescents in New York State. DESIGN: A retrospective, population-based analysis of New York State workers' compensation award data and the Annual Demographic File, a supplement to the US Bureau of the Census Current Population Survey. PARTICIPANTS: Adolescents, aged 14 through 17 years, who received workers' compensation awards for occupational injury from 1980 through 1987. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: (1) Numbers, types, and rates of occupational injuries in working adolescents by age, sex, industry, and occupation; (2) health consequences of injury, especially disability and death; and (3) secular trends in injury award rates. RESULTS: A total of 9656 adolescents were compensated for occupational injuries; 4201 compensated adolescents (43.5%) suffered permanent disability; 31 working adolescents died. The annual mean rate of compensated occupational injury was 28.2 per 10,000 adolescent workers. Rates were higher in males than in females and ranged from 8.2 per 10,000 in 14-year-old male workers to 46.8 per 10,000 in 17-year-old male workers. Highest rates by industry were seen in manufacturing (49.0/10,000 adolescent workers) and agriculture (46.2/10,000). Unskilled labor was the most dangerous occupation (52.3/10,000). CONCLUSION: Occupational injuries are a substantial and underrecognized contributor to the continuing epidemic of injury among adolescents.  相似文献

Scholars have argued that racial-cultural issues should be given more attention in psychological research. The American Psychological Association (APA) has instituted guidelines and policies about how to include race and culture in research, theory, and practice. Members of racial minority groups are overrepresented in populations served by forensic psychologists. This article reviews content analyses of racial-cultural issues in psychology and presents a content analysis of the treatment of race and culture in 7 forensic psychology journals between 1998 and 2003. Results indicate that less than 10% of the empirical articles addressed issues of race or culture with any depth and that the majority of the articles used a cultural deprivation paradigm. Discusses several psychological conferences and committee's attitudes toward the desirability of "programs to train for psychological service at less than the doctoral level." 7 central areas of contention concerning subdoctoral training are (1) type of training, (2) level of training, (3) responsibility for training, (4) locus of training, (5) degree and/or title, (6) roles and duties, and (7) implications for psychology. The 7 issues served as the basis of the specific questions in a large scale survey. The sample (N = 4308) included American Psychological Association members of the Clinical, School, and Counseling Divisions of Psychology and chairmen of graduate departments of psychology. Results indicate that "the large majority of psychologists recognize the need for and approve the training of people at less than the doctoral level to do psychological work."
