An Exploratory Examination of Student Dismissals and Prompted Resignations From Clinical Psychology PhD Training Programs: Does Clinical Competency Matter?

How do clinical psychology PhD training programs decide whether a student should be dismissed? Are these decisions related to the student's clinical competency or suitability? Accredited, scientist-practitioner clinical psychology PhD training programs were surveyed about their experiences with dismissal decisions and clinical competency evaluations. Average rates of student dismissal and prompted resignations were low (less than 3% and 6%, respectively) but highly variable across programs. The most common basis for dismissals and resignations pertained to clinical competency concerns and academic standards. However, for 29% of programs, documented dismissal criteria did not include expectations for achievement of a prescribed level of clinical skills proficiency. Skills training in affective and interpersonal regulation followed by exposure: A phase-based treatment for PTSD related to childhood abuse.

Fifty-eight women with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to childhood abuse were randomly assigned to a 2-phase cognitive-behavioral treatment or a minimal attention wait list. Phase 1 of treatment included 8 weekly sessions of skills training in affect and interpersonal regulation; Phase 2 included 8 sessions of modified prolonged exposure. Compared with those on wait list, participants in active treatment showed significant improvement in affect regulation problems, interpersonal skills deficits, and PTSD symptoms. Gains were maintained at 3- and 9-month follow-up. Phase 1 therapeutic alliance and negative mood regulation skills predicted Phase 2 exposure success in reducing PTSD, suggesting the value of establishing a strong therapeutic relationship and emotion regulation skills before exposure work among chronic PTSD populations. A femininity adjective check list.

"An adjective check list scale was developed to provide an easily obtainable index of psychological masculinity-feminity. The derived scale was based on 61 items included in a list of 148 adjectives. Only a minute or two is required to check the list by most Ss. The index substantially distinguishes between groups of male and female college freshmen, and between a group of homosexual men and male college freshmen. The nonunitary character of the scale is revealed by low intrascale correlations. The higher test-retest reliability and the higher interscale correlations suggest that the index is reliable enough for the kinds of group research for which it was developed. "A volume-year check list for 125 of the major psychological journals has been compiled by the writers. The data are presented in tabular form, providing information regarding the volumes published through 1954 under a journal title and the year in which each volume appeared. Thus, with either volume number or date known to the user, the other figure can be determined from the table. Also included in the list are indications of the title changes, dates of cessation, and periods of suspended publication."
