Several studies have been conducted evaluating the properties of warm mix asphalt (WMA), and it is observed that warm asphalt additives work in different ways to either reduce the viscosity of the binder or to allow better workability of the mix at lower temperatures. In terms of rubberized asphalt mixtures, they are compacted at a higher temperature than conventional mixtures, based on the field experience. If the technologies of warm mix asphalt are incorporated, it is expected to reduce the mixing and compaction temperatures of rubberized asphalt mixtures to those of conventional mixtures. This paper presents the high temperature properties of rubberized binders containing warm asphalt additives. Rubberized binders were produced at 10% by binder weight using five binder sources, and the binders with the additives were produced using two (i.e. Aspha-min® and Sasobit®) of the available processes and artificially short-term aged through the rolling thin film oven (RTFO) method. Tests were conducted on the binders using the rotational viscometer and the Dynamic Shear Rheometer. The results indicated that the viscosity properties of rubberized binders can be changed significantly through the use of warm asphalt additives. Also, the addition of the additives was found to improve rutting resistance of the rubberized binders.  相似文献

为了探明改性沥青中SBS(苯乙烯-丁二烯嵌段聚合物)在施工及使用过程中的老化行为,通过对改性沥青在RTFOT、PAV老化前后的凝胶色谱分析研究了SBS的降解过程.结果表明:改性沥青经历RTFOT老化后有少量SBS交联结构发生降解,对沥青仍具有较好的改性效果:改性沥青经历PAV老化后SBS发生严重降解,平均分子质量显著下降,部分SBS丧失对沥青的改性效果:线性和星型2种类型SBS的老化程度不同;荧光显微观测试验结果与GPC分析结论一致,证明GPC分析方法能有效表征SBS的降解过程.  相似文献

The long-term performance of pavement is associated with various factors such as pavement structure, materials, traffic loading, and environmental conditions. Improving the understanding of the fatigue behavior of the specific rubberized warm mix asphalt (WMA) is helpful in recycling the scrap tires and saving energy. This study explores the utilization of the conventional fatigue analysis approach in investigating the fatigue life of rubberized asphalt concrete mixtures containing the WMA additive. The fatigue beams were made with one rubber type (?40 mesh ambient crumb rubber), two aggregate sources, two WMA additives (Asphamin® and Sasobit®), and tested at 20 °C. A total of eight mixtures were performed and 29 fatigue beams were tested in this study. The test results indicated that the addition of crumb rubber and WMA additive not only reduced the mixing and compaction temperatures of rubberized asphalt mixtures offset by crumb rubber but also effectively extended the long-term performance of pavement when compared with conventional asphalt pavement. In addition, the exponential function forms are efficient in achieving the correlations between the dissipated energy and load cycle as well as mixture stiffness and load cycle.  相似文献

This study addresses the rheological investigation of properties of warm mix asphalt (WMA) binders containing long-term aged binders. The recycled binders with the additives were produced using two (i.e., zeolite Aspha-min® and wax Sasobit®) of the available warm asphalt processes. The main rheological factors selected in this study were relationships between loading and response as a function of time, temperature and frequency using a Bohlin Dynamic Shear Rheometer II. The results indicated that the addition of Sasobit® into recycled binders played an important role in determination of the binder properties evaluated in this study. The use of lower performance grade (PG) as a virgin binder (PG 58-28 in this study) was critical on offsetting the change of rheological binder properties due to the warm additives and the aged binders.  相似文献

A high-precision model was derived to predict the flow number of dense asphalt mixtures using a novel hybrid method coupling genetic programming and simulated annealing, called GP/SA. The proposed constitutive model correlates the flow number of Marshall specimens with the percentages of filler, bitumen, voids in mineral aggregate, Marshall stability, and Marshall flow. The comprehensive experimental database used for the development of the model was established upon a series of uniaxial dynamic creep tests conducted in this study. Generalized regression neural network and multiple regression-based analyses were performed to benchmark the GP/SA model. The contributions of the variables affecting the flow number were evaluated through a sensitivity analysis. A subsequent parametric study was carried out and the trends of the results were confirmed with the results of the experimental study. The results indicate that the proposed GP/SA model is effectively capable of evaluating the flow number of asphalt mixtures. The derived model is remarkably straightforward and provides an analysis tool accessible to practicing engineers.  相似文献

One of the main reasons behind the appearance of early distresses in Jordan roads and the low surface skid resistance is the use of marginal quality limestone aggregate. Large quantities of good quality basalt are available in the Northeastern parts of Jordan. In this research, the possibility of improving the properties of local asphalt concrete mixes by replacing different portions of the normally used limestone aggregate by basalt was investigated. The replacement included total replacement of the limestone by basalt, replacing the coarse aggregate, and replacing the fine aggregate. Results showed that the optimal mix was the mix that had basalt coarse aggregate and limestone fine aggregate. In order to overcome the stripping potential of the optimal mix, 20% of the filler portion of the aggregate, material smaller than 0.075 mm, was replaced by lime. The optimal mix showed superiority, over the tested mixes, in all the evaluated properties, which were Marshall Stability, indirect tensile strength, stripping resistance, resilient modulus, dynamic creep, fatigue, and rutting.  相似文献

Reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) comprises one of the largest recycled materials, and warm mix asphalt (WMA) technologies become more commonly used due to their promising advantages in the United States and Europe. This paper addresses the laboratory investigation of performance properties of WMA binders containing aged binders. The recycled binders with the additives were produced using two (i.e., zeolite Aspha-min® and wax Sasobit®) of the available warm asphalt processes. The recycled WMA binders were artificially short-term and then long-term aged through the rolling thin film oven (RTFO) and pressure aging vessel (PAV) procedures. Superpave binder tests were carried out on the binders through the rotational viscometer, the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), and the bending beam rheometer (BBR). In general, the results of this study indicated that (1) the additives and aged binders played an important role in determination of the binder properties; (2) the use of lower PG grade as a virgin binder (PG 58-28 in this study) was critical on offsetting the increase of binder stiffness caused by the addition of WMA additives and aged binders; and (3) even at the low recycling percentage of 15%, the lower PG grade was needed to get the results meeting current Superpave binder requirements.  相似文献

Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) is a relatively new technique for investigation of construction materials. In this study AFM was used to investigate the interaction of asphalt binder with fly ash. Fly ash is a coal combustion byproduct of electric power utilities having pozzolanic properties and commonly used in Portland cement concrete. In this study, an investigation was made by using different types of fly ash with two types of asphalt binders such as PG 58-28 and PG 64-28. Asphalt microstructure is divided into four subgroups such as Saturates, Aromatics, Resins and Asphaltenes (SARA). These four phases can be distinguished by the atomic force microscope. The interaction of these phases affected by introducing fly-ash was investigated and correlation with rheological properties was observed.  相似文献

Both the RTFO (rolling-thin film oven) aging of asphalt binders and the STOA (short-term oven aging) of asphalt mixtures are designed to simulate aging during the construction of hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavements. Many studies have been conducted evaluating the aging effects on asphalt binders since their properties can be easily measured using many conventional tests, such as rotational viscometer, DSR (dynamic shear rheometer), and BBR (bending beam rheometer). However, studies on asphalt mixture aging have been limited to mechanical properties such as strength and fatigue characteristics because considerable effort is required to identify the aging of the asphalt binder in a mixture. This study evaluated the effects of short-term oven aging on asphalt mixtures using the GPC (gel-permeation chromatography) procedure. Nine asphalt mixtures, using three different binder sources, were prepared and five short-term aging methods were used to evaluate these mixes. For comparison, the RTFO aging was also conducted for nine asphalt binders. The aging of a binder within asphalt mixtures, including polymer-modified mixtures, could be identified under various short-term aging conditions. Statistical analysis of the GPC test results indicated that two commonly used short-term aging methods in the laboratory, a 154 °C oven aging for 2 h and a 135 °C oven aging for 4 h, are not significantly different, based on the increase in the large molecular size (LMS) ratios. The RTFO aging method was found to have less effect on binder aging than the short-term oven aging methods of asphalt mixtures.  相似文献

This paper compares the performance of the stone mastic asphalt (SMA) mixes made with the various binders. Three types of binders namely: 20–30, 40–50 and 70–100 penetration grade were considered. The performance tests including, Marshall stability, tensile strength, tensile strength ratio, resistance to permanent deformation, flexural strength and resilient modulus were carried out on the SMA mixes. The safe pavement design criteria of the SMA mixes based on the anisotropic elasticity analysis through finite-element simulation were obtained and reported herein. In addition, an optimization table was prepared to select the type of SMA mixture for any field applications.  相似文献

At all stages of pavement life, the highway surface should have some sort of roughness to facilitate friction between car wheels and pavement surface. Skid resistance is a measure of the resistance of pavement surface to sliding or skidding of the vehicle. It is a relationship between the vertical force and the horizontal force developed as a tire slides along the pavement surface. The texture of the pavement surface and its ability to resist the polishing effect of traffic is of prime importance in providing skidding resistance. Polishing of the aggregate is the reduction in microtexture, resulting in the smoothing and rounding of exposed aggregates. This process is caused by particle wear on a microscopic scale. It is a common fact that the lower the skid resistance value, the higher the percentage of the traffic accidents, especially during the wet seasons. Having a low skid resistance value at an asphalt concrete surface might be attributed to one or more of the following reasons: (1) use of higher asphalt content than recommended by the mix design procedure, (2) the Marshall mix design procedure itself, (3) used aggregate gradation, and (4) aggregate quality. To evaluate these factors, a comparative study was performed to find the British Pendulum Skid Resistance Number for a number of mixes. These mixes included, an asphalt concrete mix using local aggregate at the optimum Marshall asphalt content, mixes with 0.5% and 1.0% asphalt contents higher than Marshall optimum asphalt content, a mix designed using Superpave design procedure, a mix with steel slag to replace 30% of limestone aggregate, and a mix with stone matrix aggregate gradation. It was found that the mix with 30% slag has the highest skid number followed by Superpave, SMA, and Marshall mixes, respectively. It was also observed that increasing the asphalt content above the optimal asphalt content value decreases the skid resistance of these mixes.  相似文献

A laboratory study was carried to investigate whether certain antioxidants could be used to reduce age-hardening in asphalt binders. Several additives including: Vitamin E, Irganox 1010, Irgafos P-EPQ, carbon black, hydrated lime, and DLTDP/furfural, were evaluated. The modified asphalt binders were subjected to two accelerated oxidative aging regimes in the laboratory. Short-term oxidative aging of the binders was simulated using a rolling thin film oven while long-term aging was performed using a pressure aging vessel. The effects of aging on the binders were evaluated based on changes in rheological properties of asphalt binders undergoing oxidative aging. Binders modified with a combination of furfural and DLTDP was found to posses the lowest aging index. The antioxidant-treated binders exhibited improved performance at both high and low pavement temperatures.  相似文献

In recent years, warm mix asphalt (WMA) is widely used for reducing energy requirements and emissions in hot mix asphalt (HMA) industry. In addition, the use of rubberized asphalt in the past has proven to be economical, environmentally sound and effective in improving the performance of pavements across the US and the world. The objective of this research was to investigate the mixture performance characteristics of rubberized warm asphalt mixtures, and their correlation with binder properties, through a series of laboratory tests (e.g., viscosity, dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), and bending beam rheometer (BBR)) conducted on the binders, and obtaining the indirect tensile strength, rutting resistance, and resilient modulus of various mixtures. The results of the experiments indicated that the use of crumb rubber and WMA additive in HMA can effectively improve the engineering properties of these mixes at lower mixing and compacting temperatures and some statistical correlations between rheological and/or engineering properties were developed successfully.  相似文献

The application of crumb rubber in asphalt mixtures is intended to improve the binder properties by reducing the binder’s inherent temperature susceptibility. This research investigated the interaction effects of CRM binders as a function of various blending treatments in the laboratory. For this study, CRM binders were produced using seven blending times (5, 30, 60, 90, 120, 240, and 480 min), three blending temperatures (177, 200, and 223 °C), and four rubber contents (5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% by weight of asphalt binder). The results from this study showed that (1) The interaction time and interaction temperature for CRM binders were observed to have significant effect on the binder properties; (2) The longer time and higher temperature for interaction of CRM binders resulted in an increase in the high failure temperature and the viscosity. This is thought to be due to the increase in the rubber mass through binder absorption. However, this study found that the control binder of PG 64-22 had little change of the binder properties as a function of interaction conditions; (3) The CRM percentage influence is statistically significant on the viscosity and G*/sin δ values. Also, the asphalt binder with higher CRM percentage showed a higher large molecular size (LMS) value, and the increase in CRM percentage is considered to result in the additional loss of the low molecular weight in the asphalt binder to the CRM.  相似文献

The use of furfural (C5H4O2) as an activation agent has been suggested as a method to improve the rheological properties of asphalt binders due to its compatibility with crumb rubber. This study uses five different crude sources and both ambient and cryogenic produced crumb rubber modifiers (CRM). The rheological properties for furfural activated and conventional CRM binders were evaluated using the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and the gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The results indicated that furfural activation has variable effects on the properties of the CRM binder. However, the most pronounced effect is shown in the storage stability improvement which will have an effect on the storage of CRM binder. Also, the activation caused a reduction in the ratio of the small molecular size distribution which is considered an improvement in the binder properties.  相似文献

The influence of adding two commercial waxes (FT-paraffin and polyethylene wax) to binders of penetration grades 50/70 and 160/220 were investigated for high temperature performance of binders and asphalt concrete mixtures. Binder properties were determined by conventional test methods, dynamic mechanical analysis and bending beam rheometer testing. The high temperature properties of asphalt concrete were investigated using the French rutting tester.The addition of FT-paraffin and polyethylene wax increased the rutting resistance of mixtures for both types of binder. The FT-paraffin modified asphalt mixtures showed the best rutting resistance.Adding polyethylene wax showed the highest stiffening effect in terms of rutting factor by DMA for the binders. However, this could not be verified in asphalt mixture testing. Adding FT-paraffin improved the rutting resistance of asphalt mixtures containing low or high penetration binder, but for the mixture containing high penetration binder the specification limit was exceeded.  相似文献
