In the broadband era, narrowband short message service (SMS) is still the most popular wireless data service. Many studies have been conducted to investigate the performance of SMS based on the arrival rates of short messages. From Chunghwa Telecom's commercial SMS call data records, we observed that even if the SMS arrival rates are the same, the distributions for the number of SMS arrivals per half hour are quite different for various observed days. We further identify that for the SMS traffic in a specific day, there are non‐burst and burst periods. This paper investigates the SMS behaviors on weekdays, weekends, and holidays (specifically, new years' days and eves). With the assistance of kernel‐based fitting method, we derive the SMS arrival number distributions of various traffic types and observed days. Our approach fits each SMS arrival number distribution by three cubic polynomial functions that can accurately capture the SMS behaviors. On the basis of the SMS arrival number distributions derived from our model, the mobile operators have better understanding about the volumes of short messages in different times and days, which can be used to design more flexible short message charging rates. Short Message Service (SMS) is the most popular mobile data service today. In Taiwan, a subscriber sends more than 200 short messages per year on average. The huge demand for SMS significantly increases network traffic, and it is essential that mobile operators should provide efficient SMS delivery mechanism. In this paper, we study the short message retransmission policies and derive some facts about these policies. Then, we propose an analytic model to investigate the short message retransmission performance. The analytic model is validated against simulation experiments. We also collect SMS statistics from a commercial mobile telecommunications network. Our study indicates that the performance trends for the analytic/simulation models and the measured data are consistent.  相似文献

Short message service (SMS) provides a wide channel of communication for banking in mobile commerce and mobile payment. The transmission of SMS is not secure in the network using global system for mobile communications or general packet radio service. Security threats in SMS restricted the use of SMS in mobile banking within certain limits. This paper proposed a model to address the security of SMS using elliptic curve cryptography. The proposed model provides end‐to‐end SMS communication between the customer and the bank through the mobile application. The main objective of the proposed model is to design and develop a security framework for SMS banking. Further, the protocol is verified for its correctness and security properties because most of the protocols are not having the facility to be verified by using the formal methods. Our proposed framework is experimentally validated by formal methods using model checking tool called automated validation of internet security protocols and Scyther tools. Security analysis shows that the proposed mechanism works better compared to existing SMS payment protocols for real‐world applications.  相似文献

The architecture and the protocols of LTE/EPC were designed to deliver high transmission rates with QoS requirements. In order to be able to guarantee different levels of QoS, each transmission is based on a bearer, which needs to be set up within the network. It then requires to store contexts in the various entities of the network and to set up several tunnels or connections both in the user and the control planes. This approach is, however, inadequate when considering a class of value-added services obedient to a “Short Data push principle”. This category which contains, at least, very popular services like Short Message Service (SMS) and Twitter, or new ones like Machine-to-Machine communication services, represents on one hand a continuously growing part of the worldwide amount of data traffic exchanged and on the other hand is easily recognizable thanks to its specific traffic pattern. To allow LTE/EPC to conveniently cope with the sporadic nature of these services, we introduce a new procedure based on a set of simple messages to transport such isolated messages only in the control plane. We show that this procedure may generate additional signaling in some cases but is efficient as soon as the proportion of sporadic traffic is not negligible. We illustrate our approach in the case of the SMS which is emblematic of the targeted category of services. The proposed procedure is, however, generic and may be used for any type of sporadic traffic.  相似文献

The short message service (SMS), a bidirectional service for short alphanumeric (up to 160 bytes) messages, is a unique feature of GSM not found in older analog systems. Multireceiver short message traffic has increased amazingly over the years. We propose a multicast SMS architecture over our backbone network. Then, we demonstrate some approaches to maintain the SMS center location information consistent with the home location register and illustrate our scheme for mobile terminated short message transfer. Finally, we simulate and evaluate this architecture. Our simulation indicates that the proposed strong consistency approaches have optimal efficiency by adjusting parameters, and the proposed architecture efficiently provides self-routing capability and multicast functionality in our cellular backbone network. The study also provides a further insight on the issues of multicast wireless cellular backbone network and demonstrates a referable methodology to propose and analyze a multicast cellular backbone network, which can promote the technology of a personal communication network.  相似文献
