The National NDT Centre at Harwell has been developing methods for the characterization of materials using ultrasonics. This paper reviews the progress made in applying ultrasonic attenuation measurements to the determination of such quantities as grain size and dislocation content. A method, ultrasonic attenuation spectral analysis, has been developed, which enables the contributions of scattering and absorption to the total attenuation to be separated. The theoretical advances that have been made are also described. Some of the practical applications of the technique are illustrated and future development discussed. 相似文献

Nondestructive characterization of sintered uranium dioxide using ultrasonics is addressed. The values of elastic moduli and ultrasonic velocity of uranium dioxide as a function of pore volume fraction are compared with the predicted values of elasticity and self-consistent scattering theories. Analysis of data shows that the longitudinal ultrasonic velocity may be used as a predictor of density and elastic moduli and that the relationship between the elastic moduli and longitudinal velocity is linear over a change of Young's modulus by 50% 相似文献

This paper describes a new methodology for analyzing the closure stress of small fatigue cracks using ultrasonics. Surface connected back-wall cracks in steel specimens are considered. The crack-corner echo of ultrasonic shear wave beam of 50° incidence in the material is used. In order to account for the exact effect of closure stress on ultrasonic response, the echo amplitude is analyzed based on artificially applying additional closure stress. The initial closure stress at no load condition is determined by the standard compliance technique. A relationship between the closure stress and the crack-echo response is established which provides the facility of getting a true model of crack closure stress. The relationship is found to be independent of crack depth. The present approach can be used to overcome the difficulties encountered by crack closure in recent nondestructive ultrasonic techniques and may lead the way in quantitative evaluation of crack depth as well as exact closure stress. 相似文献
