Thirty-two Holstein cows were assigned to four treatment groups in a continuous lactation trial to evaluate effects of daily subcutaneous injections of 0 (A), 5.15 (B), 10.3 (C), and 20.6 mg (D) of recombinantly derived bovine somatotropin monomer. Responses were milk yield and composition, component yields, net energy intake, body weight, and somatic cell counts. Treatments began in fall, 28 to 35 d postpartum, and continued for 266 d. Base ration was corn silage and concentrate. Least squares means of milk and constituent yields and gross efficiency of milk production differed among treatments, but percentage fat and protein, energy intake, body weights, and somatic cell counts did not. Least squares means of 3.5% FCM were 21.3 (A), 25.0 (B), 26.2 (C), and 28.5 kg/d (D); fat and protein yields showed similar response to treatment. Milk yields adjusted for pretreatment yields were 21.1 (A), 25.5 (B), 26.5 (C), and 29.3 kg/d (D). Orthogonal contrasts showed lower milk and constituent yields and net energy intake for control (A) than for hormone-injected cows (B, C, D), but no differences were detected between treatments B, C, and D. Gross efficiency of production (3.5% FCM/feed net energy intake) was greater for hormone-injected cows.  相似文献

The objective was to relate the short-term milk yield response (MYR) following use of exogenous bovine somatotropin (bST) to changes in plasma concentrations of metabolites and hormones. Twenty-four Holstein cows (52 +/- 4.1 d postpartum) received daily subcutaneous injections of saline for 1 wk followed by subcutaneous injections of 33 mg/d of bST for 2 wk (Trial 1). The difference in milk yield between wk 1 and 3 for each cow was used to determine the 5 cows with the highest (HR) and 5 with the lowest responses (LR) to bST. These 10 cows were then used in 3 further trials of the same design (Trials 2, 3, and 4, conducted at 122, 181, and 237 +/- 7.6 d postpartum, respectively). Blood samples were taken 2 h after the administration of bST on d 1, 3, 5, 15, 17, and 19 of each trial. The HR group had consistently greater MYR to bST than the LR group throughout their lactation. The LR group had a higher milk yield and lower plasma insulin like growth factor-I (IGF-I) concentrations during the saline treatment in all trials. The increase in plasma somatotropin concentrations following injections of bST was greater for the LR group, whereas the difference in plasma IGF-I level between wk 1 and 3 was greater for the HR group. The HR group had lower levels of 3-hydroxy-butyrate and nonesterified fatty acids before bST treatment. Low short-term response to bST was associated with plasma concentrations of hormones and metabolites that indicate negative energy balance, although other factors may be involved.  相似文献

Effects of daily sometribove administration on milk yield and composition, body condition score, BW, and SCC were evaluated in Holstein cows milked three times daily. Lactating cows (n =104) were assigned randomly to control or sometribove-treated (25 mg/d) groups. The experimental period was 16 wk, consisting of 2-wk pretreatment, 12-wk treatment, and 2-wk posttreatment periods. All cows were injected once daily starting at 53 to 180 d postpartum, housed in free stalls, and fed one of five total mixed rations according to milk production. Body weights were measured weekly, and body condition was scored biweekly. Milk yield was recorded daily, and weekly milk samples were analyzed for fat, protein, lactose, total solids, and SCC. Milk yield and milk protein were increased 18.8% (38.6 vs. 32.5 kg/d) and 3.3% (3.1 vs. 3.0%), respectively, whereas percentage of milk fat, lactose, SNF, SCC, and BW were unaffected by treatment. Overall average body condition scores were lower for the sometribove-treated group versus control (2.2 vs. 2.4). No apparent differences in the number of cows treated for mastitis, foot rot, displaced abomasum, or lameness were observed between treatment groups. Sometribove treatment significantly enhanced milk yield (6.1 kg/d) with no apparent negative effects on health in high producing cows milked three times per day.  相似文献

Eight lactating Holstein cows were used to study the effect of bovine somatotropin on mammary lipid metabolism, milk production, and milk composition. Eight cows were injected with either excipient (n = 4) or 50 IU somatotropin/d (n = 4). A 2-wk adjustment period preceded a 10-d period when treatments were administered. On d 9, serial blood samples were collected from 2 to 5 h post-injection to determine concentrations of somatotropin and metabolites in plasma. Mammary tissue biopsies were obtained 2 to 3 h after a.m. milking on d 10 to determine lipoprotein lipase activity and in vitro rates of acetate incorporation into fatty acids and acetate oxidation by mammary tissue slices. Activity of lipoprotein lipase in milk and mammary tissue and rate of acetate metabolism by mammary tissue were not affected by treatment. The following means for placebo and somatotropin, respectively, were: milk production (21.5 and 24.8 kg/d), milk fat (3.8 and 4.0%), and 4% FCM (20.7 and 25.1 kg/d). Plasma concentrations of somatotropin (3.0 and 43.4 ng/ml) and free fatty acids (105.6 and 219.5 mu eq/L) were significantly elevated with somatotropin. The injection of somatotropin into lactating dairy cows did not affect the mechanisms of fatty acid synthesis or metabolism evaluated in this study.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the response of Holstein cows to bovine somatotropin (bST) during advanced lactation and its relationship to energy intake. Twenty-four lactating Holstein cows averaging 21 kg of milk/d, and 292 d in milk were assigned to one of three treatment groups in a randomized block design. Blocks were based on the 14 d of pretreatment milk production, and treatment groups were balanced for days in milk. Treatment 1 was a low-energy diet (1.49 Mcal/kg of dry matter) without bST injection; treatment 2 was the low-energy diet plus injection of 500 mg of bST every 14 d; and treatment 3 was a high-energy diet (1.71 Mcal/kg of dry matter) with bST injections as in treatment 2. Treatment was divided into two periods (1 to 49 and 50 to 98 d) to determine if response to bST and energy changed with time on treatment. Results showed that bST significantly (P < 0.05) increased milk, fat-corrected milk, and fat and protein yields; and feed efficiency (fat-corrected milk per dry matter intake) for both periods. Milk yield responses to bST were greater for cows fed the low-than the high-energy diet in both periods. These data show that bST injections for cows in advanced lactation increased performance, but excessive energy diminished the bST response.  相似文献

Thirty multiparous lactating Holstein cows were blocked according to time of calving and assigned to a 2 x 3 factorial arrangement of treatments in a randomized complete block design to evaluate the effects of two dietary energy concentrations either without or with bST (20.6 mg/d per cow) administered to cows that had not or had received bST during the preceding lactation. Subcutaneous injection of bST began 28 to 35 d postpartum and continued for 39 wk. The dietary energy concentration x bST interaction was not significant for any response variable. Compared with DMI of control cows, DMI was higher for cows receiving bST, being 1.6 and 2.4 kg/d higher for cows receiving bST for one and two lactations, respectively. Milk, fat, and protein yields were higher for cows receiving bST than for controls. Those receiving bST for a second lactation also produced more milk than controls until wk 20; thereafter, milk yields were similar to those of controls. Somatotropin administration had no adverse effect on udder health. Cows receiving bST tended to ovulate less regularly than controls, which may be attributed to their higher milk yield. However, BW gains during lactation were similar for all treatments, indicating that bST-treated cows built energy reserves for the subsequent lactation. Although energy concentrations of the diets had no significant impact on yield, the higher energy diet tended to depress milk fat concentration. Administration of bST to dairy cows for a second, consecutive lactation yielded responses similar for the first 20 wk of the study to those receiving bST for the first time. However, after wk 20, milk yield was less than that by cows receiving bST for the first lactation but similar to that of control cows.  相似文献

Forty cows (20 Holstein, 20 Jersey) were administered 0, 5, 10, 15, or 20 mg of recombinantly derived bST daily to determine the effect on milk yield, milk composition, body weight, and body condition score. Administration of bST was from 75 +/- 7 d through 305 d postpartum. A total mixed diet of 45% corn silage and 55% of a concentrate mixture (dry basis) was provided for ad libitum intake. Milk yield of Holstein and Jersey cows administered 20 mg of bST increased 25.3 and 22.8%, respectively, over controls. Fat-corrected milk from Holsteins and Jerseys that were administered 20 mg of somatotropin increased 32.2 and 18.7% over controls, but Jersey response was greatest when 15 mg of bST were administered (27.1% over controls). Dry matter intake of the 20 mg bST group was 13.5% greater than DM intake of controls. Apparent efficiency of production increased linearly with increasing somatotropin. There was no significant change in body weight, but body condition score declined linearly with increasing somatotropin. Most milk composition measures were unaffected by somatotropin. Jersey and Holstein milk yield increased quadratically and linearly, respectively, with somatotropin dose.  相似文献

Thirty multiparous (cows) and 15 primiparous (heifers) lactating Holstein cattle were used in a 112-d study to examine the effects of pattern of administration of recombinantly derived bST on 3.5% FCM yield. Ten cows and 5 heifers each received either no injection (controls), 14 mg of bST daily, or four repetitions of 14 mg of bST/d for 14 d followed by 14 d of no injection (intermittent bST). Because there was an interaction between treatment groups and parity, analyses were performed separately for cows and heifers. All cows and heifers produced more FCM when given bST than controls. Comparing FCM only during the last 7 d of each period of injection for the intermittent bST group with contemporary daily injected cattle indicated that cows produced equivalent amounts of milk at those times, whereas heifers given daily bST produced 3.4 kg/d more than intermittently injected animals. Furthermore, over each of the four repetitive periods, cows and heifers given daily or intermittent bST responded similarly, although heifers given continuous bST produced more FCM than the intermittent group during each of periods 2 through 4. We conclude that daily administration of bST lends itself to dosing termination during established lactation with concomitant decline of FCM; resumption of bST allows milk yields of cows to achieve levels comparable with those prior to short-term interruption.  相似文献

Thirty-one lactating Holstein and Jersey cows were used to determine the effect of daily injections of 0 or 20 mg of recombinant bST in hot, humid weather. The comparison period lasted 80 d, from mid-June through August. The maximum and minimum ambient temperature and relative humidity averaged 34.6 and 22.2 degrees C and 100 and 59.8%, respectively. Body temperatures of somatotropin-treated Holsteins were elevated over controls by .2 and .3 degrees C at the a.m. and p.m. milkings, respectively, whereas corresponding treatment effects for Jerseys were .5 and .6 degrees C, thus demonstrating a breed by treatment interaction. The response of milk and FCM yields and apparent efficiency of production to somatotropin administration depended on the level of production prior to treatment. Cows at low pretreatment production increased milk and FCM yields to a greater degree than did cows at higher production. A breed by treatment interaction showed that Holsteins increased milk and FCM yields more than Jerseys upon administration of somatotropin. Intake of DM was not affected by treatment. Cows administered bST lost BW and condition score. Greater heat stress was associated with the higher milk production of cows administered bST.  相似文献

Dry periods of 40 to 60 d have been an industry standard because dry periods <40 d have resulted in reduced milk yields in the subsequent lactation by 10 to 30%. However, recent research has demonstrated no production losses for cows given a 30-d dry period. The current study evaluated milk production effects of shortened or omitted dry periods for cows at mature-equivalent production >12,000 kg of milk and treated with bovine somatotropin (bST). The study used 2 commercial dairies and one university dairy and included 4 treatments. Five multiparous and 5 primiparous cows from each farm were assigned to each treatment: 1) 60-d dry period, label use of bST (60DD); 2) 30-d dry period, label use of bST (30DD); 3) continuous milking, label use of bST (CMLST); and 4) continuous milking with continuous use of bST (CMCST). Per label, bST use started at 57 to 70 d in milk and ended 14 d before drying (60DD and 30DD) or expected calving date (CMLST). In primiparous cows, average milk yields during the first 17 wk of lactation were reduced for cows on treatments 30DD, CMLST, and CMCST vs. the 60DD treatment. (38.3, 35.1, and 37.5 vs. 44.1 +/- 1.3 kg/d, respectively). For multiparous cows, respective milk yields did not differ (46.6, 43.4, 46.5, and 47.7 +/- 2.1 kg/d). Shortened or omitted dry periods may impede mammary growth in primiparous cows, resulting in reduced milk yield in the subsequent lactation. In contrast, a shortened or omitted dry period with either bST protocol did not alter production in multiparous cows treated with bST. Quality aspects of prepartum milk and colostrum require additional characterization. For multiparous cows, milk income generated for short dry periods or for continuous milking might increase their profitability. At 17 wk of the subsequent lactation, estimates of the cumulative net margins of multiparous cows on the 30DD treatment and continuous milking treatments exceeded those of cows on the 60DD treatment by 40 dollars to 60 dollars per cow.  相似文献

Milk production, feed efficiency, health, and reproduction were evaluated in 46 Jersey cows that received either 500 mg of sometribove (n-methionyl bST) in a prolonged-release formulation or an equivalent volume of excipient bi-weekly beginning at 60 +/- 3 DIM. Cows were fed a TMR for ad libitum intake and were milked twice daily. Treatment with sometribove increased 3.5% FCM production 5.3 kg/d (31.4%) over controls. Milk composition was not changed, except that milk P content averaged 51 ppm higher in bST-treated cows. Net energy intake was 4.8 Mcal/d (22.9%) higher in the bST-treated cows than in the controls. General health of all cows was good throughout the study, but the cows treated with bST had more cases of mastitis than did the control cows. The bST treatment produced localized reactions at the site of injection in some cows, but these reactions did not affect milk production. Sometribove treatment had no effect on reproductive performance; 85% of the treated and 100% of the control cows calved successfully. Treatment with bST for a full lactation did not affect performance during the initial 60 d of the subsequent lactation.  相似文献

Forty-eight multiparous Holstein cows were used in an experiment with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to study interactions of bST and nutrient density during wk 5 through 20 postpartum. Main effects were bST (0 or 10.3 mg/d) and diet (control or high protein and energy). The control diet was formulated to contain 16.3% CP and 1.65 Mcal of NEL/kg of DM; the high protein and energy diet was formulated to contain 18% CP and 1.74 Mcal of NEL/kg of DM with additional energy as fat from extruded soybeans and calcium salts of fatty acids. Diet ratios were 50:25:25 for concentrate:alfalfa hay:corn silage (DM basis). Bovine somatotropin increased milk production (40.9 vs. 37.9 kg/d) and production of 4% FCM (35.7 vs. 32.3 kg/d). The high protein and energy diet increased milk production (40.3 vs. 38.5 kg/d); 4% FCM production was higher for high protein and energy plus bST (36.0 kg) than without bST (33.6 kg). Percentage of milk fat was not affected by treatment. Percentage of milk protein was reduced with the high protein and energy diet, presumably because of the added fat, but this reduction was less with high protein and energy plus bST. Dry matter intake was not significantly elevated by bST (23.1 vs. 22.8 kg/d) but was lower for high protein and energy (22.0 vs. 23.8 kg/d). Increased dietary protein and energy with bST augmented the total milk production response.  相似文献

To determine effects of rapid prepubertal growth on first-lactation milk production, Holstein heifers were randomly assigned to one of three treatments. Thirty-five heifers were fed a standard diet to meet NRC recommendations and produce 0.8 kg of body weight (BW) gain/d (standard). Thirty-five heifers were fed a diet with higher energy (2.8 Mcal of metabolizable energy/kg) and protein (19.7% crude protein; high diet) to produce 1.2 kg of BW gain/d (high). Thirty-five heifers were fed the high diet and injected daily with bovine somatotropin (bST) (25 microg/kg of BW; high-bST). Diets were fed and bST was injected from 135 kg of BW until pregnancy was confirmed. Heifers were inseminated after BW exceeded 363 kg. Pregnant heifers were commingled and fed similar diets through gestation, parturition, and lactation. High and high-bST heifers had greater prebreeding average BW gains than standard heifers. Conversely, standard heifers had a greater average BW gain during gestation than high and high-bST heifers. High and high-bST heifers were approximately 90 d younger than standard heifers at first insemination and first parturition. Postpartum BW, body condition scores, and withers heights at parturition, and calving ease scores were not different among treatments. Standard heifers produced 14% more milk than high heifers but not more than high-bST heifers. The high-protein, high-energy diet decreased age at first parturition and first-lactation milk production, but did not affect reproduction. Injection of bST during the prepubertal growth period combined with the high diet decreased age at first parturition without reducing milk production.  相似文献

In a previous paper we analyzed the effects of day length, the daily change in day length, and heat load prevailing on test days, and on milk yield and composition of dairy cows in hot weather. For this analysis we used milk tests of three herds in Israel between 1994 and 1996. We used the same database to analyze the effects of the day length and the daily change in day length 3 wk prepartum. The prepartum day length effect was negatively related to milk yield and to milk fat and protein percentages. The daily change in day length was negative for milk yield and lactose percentage and positive for protein content and did not affect fat content. The difference of 4 h between the shortest and the longest day, plus the seasonal change in day length, accounted for the addition of 1.9 kg of milk/d for a cow calving after the shortest day compared with a cow calving after the longest day. The difference in milk composition between these two cows was estimated to be 0.27 and 0.08% of fat and protein, respectively.  相似文献

Exposure to a long-day photoperiod (LDPP) increases mammary and lean growth in heifers relative to a short day (SDPP). Whether these effects influence milk yield, however, is unknown. To test the hypothesis that pre-pubertal long-day exposure would increase milk production, we assigned prepubertal heifers to LDPP (16 h of light:8 h of dark; n = 16) or SDPP (8 h of light:16 h of dark; n = 16) until the onset of puberty. At puberty, heifers were commingled and housed under natural photoperiodic conditions and standard nutritional management for dairy heifers. Heifers were bred according to body weight (BW = 385 kg) and withers height (WH = 132 cm). At parturition, BW, WH, and hip height were evaluated. Analysis of Dairy Herd Improvement Association records was used to evaluate milk yield, milk components, and somatic cell scores. Relative to SDPP (n = 12), heifers on LDPP (n = 10) had greater WH (by 2.4 cm) and BW at calving (by 55 kg). Compared with heifers housed under SDPP, LDPP heifers tended to produce more milk (750 kg of 305-d projected fat-corrected milk) during the first lactation. Relative to SDPP, prepubertal heifers exposed to LDPP during the prepubertal growth phase were taller and heavier at parturition, and tended to produce more milk during their first lactation.  相似文献

Twenty-four Jersey cows were administered either 0 or 15.5 mg of bST/d or 310 mg of bST/14 d to determine the effect on milk yield, milk composition, feed intake, and body weight. Administration of bST was from wk 14 through 42 postpartum. Cows were housed in a tie-stall barn and fed for ad libitum intake a TMR adjusted to one of two energy protein densities according to milk yield. Milk yield of cows administered bST daily or by sustained-released vehicle increased 27.6 and 24.7%, respectively, over that of control cows; FCM increased by 30.3 and 26.7%. Percentages of fat and protein in milk were unaffected by bST treatment. Dry matter intake of cows administered bST was greater than that of control cows, whether expressed as kilograms per day or as a percentage of body weight. Apparent efficiency of yield increased in cows administered bST. No significant change in body weight occurred; however, cows administered bST had lower body condition scores at 42 wk postpartum. This trial demonstrated comparable effects of bST on lactational performance when administered daily or in a 14-d sustained-release vehicle.  相似文献

The effect of clinical mastitis on milk yield was studied in 24,276 Finnish Ayrshire cows that calved in 1993 and were followed for one lactation (i.e., until culling or the next calving). Cows that had only mastitis, but no other diseases, and cows that had no diseases (healthy cows) during the lactation were included in the study. Monthly test day milk yields were treated as repeated measurements within an animal in a mixed model analysis. Mastitis index categories were created to relate the timing of mastitis to the test day milk measures. Statistical models (a separate model for each parity) included fixed effects of calving season, stage of lactation, and mastitis index. An autoregressive correlation structure was used to model the association among the repeated measurements. The effect of mastitis occurring at different periods during the lactation was studied. The daily loss during the first 2 wk after the occurrence of mastitis varied from 1.0 to 2.5 kg, and the total loss over the entire lactation varied from 110 to 552 kg and depended on parity and the time of mastitis occurrence. Regardless of the time of occurrence during the lactation, mastitis had a long-lasting effect on milk yield; cows with mastitis did not reach their premastitis milk yields during the remainder of the lactation after onset of the disease.  相似文献

The protective effect of bovine somatotropin (bST) during experimental Streptococcus uberis mastitis in cows was studied. The left quarters of 10 cows were infected with 500 cfu of S. uberis O140J. Five cows were subcutaneously treated with 500 mg of recombinant bST 7 d before and after infection, and 5 control cows received the excipient. In the treated cows, total milk production significantly increased after the first and second bST treatments. After infection, milk production decreased 24 and 40% in the infected quarters, 6 and 14% in the uninfected quarters, and 15 and 28% overall for treated and control cows, respectively. In the bST group, milk production was completely restored after 3 wk, but, in the control group, total production and the production of the infected quarters remained lower than preinfection production. The increase in somatic cell count occurred earlier and more rapidly in the control group, and the return to normal values was also more rapid in these cows. The amount of bacteria in milk was higher in the control cows. Changes in milk composition, such as lactose, protein, fat, Na+, K+, and Cl-, were significantly more pronounced in the control cows. Also, clinical symptoms were more prominent in the control cows. Somatotropin protected the mammary gland from excessive production losses and compositional changes during a subsequent episode of experimentally induced Streptococcus uberis mastitis and significantly improved the normalization of production and composition, which indicates a beneficial effect on the restoration of the integrity of the blood-milk barrier.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine whether organically complexed Co, Cu, Mn, and Zn would improve the reproductive performance and milk and milk component production in lactating dairy cows that began receiving bovine somatotropin in the ninth week of lactation. Holstein (n = 50) and Jersey (n = 10) cows were blocked by breed, lactation number, and incidence of retained fetal membranes. Two diets assigned within blocks and fed from parturition until 154 d of lactation were control or control supplemented daily with 26 mg of Co as Co glucoheptonate, 125 mg of Cu as Cu-Lys, 199 mg of Mn as Mn-Met, and 359 mg of Zn as Zn-Met. Cows were fitted with electronic pressure-sensing devices in the second week of lactation for detection of estrus. Ovarian structures were determined via transrectal ultrasonography at 7-d intervals from parturition until observation of the first corpus luteum. Blood samples were taken at 7-d intervals and analyzed for plasma concentrations of progesterone, insulin, and urea nitrogen. Onset of luteal activity was identified by progesterone concentrations > or = 1 ng/ml. Retained fetal membranes increased days to first estrus (detected via electronic estrous detection), first luteal activity, and first corpus luteum in control cows but not in supplemented cows. Days to first observed estrus were greater for control cows than for supplemented cows. Days to first service, days open, days from first service to conception, services per conception, milk yield, milk components, and somatic cell counts were similar for control and supplemented cows. Supplementation with complexed trace minerals effectively reduced days to first estrus.  相似文献

Cows from static, low-merit control (CL) and contemporary, high-merit select (SL) lines that differed in milk yield by more than 4,000 kg/305-d lactation (SL > CL) were used to determine effects of selection for milk yield on blood serum concentrations of somatotropin (ST), insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I), and placental lactogen (PL). Cows were exposed to the same environment and management conditions and fed the same diets. Serum and milk samples were collected from primiparous (18 CL, 18 SL) and multiparous (12 CL, 18 SL) cows relative to day of lactation (from −28 to 280 d for nonpregnant cows and to subsequent calving for cows that conceived). Data were analyzed as repeated measures using mixed model procedures. Serum ST increased at calving, remained elevated for a longer interval in SL than in CL cows, and was greater in SL than in CL cows. Serum IGF-I decreased at calving, remained low through 14 DIM, and gradually returned to precalving concentrations as lactation progressed. Postpartum concentrations of IGF-I were less in SL than CL through 84 DIM and were similar through the remainder of lactation, resulting in a line by day interaction. Serum IGF-I and PL were not affected by merit during gestation. There was an interaction of merit and postconception interval on IGF-I, with the difference in IGF-I concentration between lines decreasing as gestation progressed. Change in serum IGF-I and PL appeared to be synchronous. Results indicate that selection for milk yield increased serum ST, prolonged the postpartum reduction in serum IGF-I, and did not alter serum PL. Results also indicate a positive relationship between PL and IGF-I and support the concept that PL plays a role in the regulation of serum IGF-I during gestation.  相似文献
