The technique of injection and the results of a series of 124 chemical lumbar sympathectomies, performed on 97 patients, are described. Sixty-eight patients, over 60 years of age, had their sympathectomy because of peripheral arteriosclerotic disease. Fifty-two of these patients benefited in terms of pain relief and only one required amputation. Sixteen patients, under 60 years of age, had their sympathectomy because of peripheral arteriosclerotic disease. Ten of these patients benefited but it is recommended that, where possible, other methods of treatment should be used in this younger age group. Thirteen patients, mostly elderly, had their sympathectomy because of diabetic ischaemic disease. Six only of these patients benefited, but it is felt that chemical sympathectomy can be recommended as a way of helping some of these patients who would otherwise have amputation.  相似文献

The chemical theories of the visual process advanced by Wald, Dartnall, and others are compared. Their adequacy for scotopic vision is substantial, while incomplete. Almost no theory successfully explains photopic vision. Evidence that rhodopsin is a light-sensitive enzyme is discussed, and it is conjectured that present extraction techniques do not permit comparison of in situ and in vitro data, particularly in the photopic case. Chemical protein synthesis is a field in transition. Previously, the synthetic accomplishment itself was the major focus of work in this field. Increasingly, chemical synthesis is now being applied to understanding how biological function originates in the structure of the protein molecule. A novel approach--'chemical ligation', which is the chemoselective reaction of unprotected peptide segments in water at pH7--has made the total synthesis of proteins a robust and practical route to the study of structure-function relationships. For certain protein families, chemical protein synthesis is the most effective way to obtain functional proteins direct from genome sequence data.  相似文献

The antitumor protein actinoxanthin exhibits high inhibitory activity against a number of gram-positive bacteria and some strains of transplantable leucoses and related tumors. Actinoxanthin was shown to consist of a single polypeptide chain crosslinked by two disulfide bonds and to contain 107 amino acid residues. Reduced and alkylated actinoxanthin was digested with chymotrypsin, thermolysin and trypsin. Based on the sequence analysis of fragments so obtained the complete amino acid sequence and the location of disulfide bonds of actinoxanthin has been proposed. The high degree homology of some regions of actinoxanthin and the antitumor protein neocarzinostatin have been revealed.  相似文献
