Two 5-wk trials using 176 weanling pigs (average initial weight of 8.3 kg and age of 31 d) were conducted to examine the effect of feeding varying levels of dietary Cu from copper sulfate (CuSO4) or a copper lysine complex (CuLys) on performance, mineral stores, serum copper, and serum mitogenic activity. Dietary treatments were 0 (15 mg/kg of Cu in basal diet), 100, 150, or 200 mg/kg of supplemental Cu from CuSO4 or CuLys. Average daily gain and ADFI increased linearly (P < .01) with increasing dietary levels of Cu during wk 1 to 2, 3 to 5, and 1 to 5, with no difference (P > .10) between the Cu sources. Overall gain:feed ratios were not consistently affected by Cu source. Dietary Cu linearly increased liver, kidney (P < .001), and brain (P < .05) concentrations of Cu. In the liver, the linear response to supplemental Cu differed between Cu sources (P < .001); pigs fed 200 mg/kg of Cu from CuLys had the highest concentration of Cu. Serum Cu concentrations increased linearly during wk 1 to 2 (P < .01), 3 to 5, and 1 to 5 (P < .001), with no difference (P > .10) between sources. Serum mitogenic activity increased linearly during wk 1 to 2 and 1 to 5 (P < .05). Growth performance was linearly improved as the dietary level of Cu increased from 15 to 200 mg/kg, with similar responses for both Cu sources. Serum and tissue concentrations of Cu were generally equally affected by the two Cu sources, except liver Cu concentration, which was onefold higher for pigs fed 200 mg/kg of Cu as CuLys.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the responses to carbadox and Cu additions in the postweaning diet of swine. The first trial contained 470 pigs in five replicates in a 2 X 5 factorial arrangement in a randomized complete block design. Weanling pigs 4-wk of age were fed diets containing 0 or 55 ppm carbadox and 0, 125, 375 or 500 ppm Cu for a 5-wk period. Copper levels of 125 and 250 ppm resulted in improved pig gains and feed intakes, but at 500 ppm, gains and feed intake declined. Carbadox resulted in enhanced gain and feed performance throughout the trial, but most notably during the initial 2-wk period. Copper improved performance measurements only during the latter 3-wk and for the overall period. There was an additive performance response when carbadox and Cu (125 ppm) were provided in combination. When carbadox was not provided, growth responses increased to the 250 ppm dietary Cu level. Liver, kidney cortex, heart and plasma Cu concentrations increased quadratically as dietary Cu levels increased, with the greatest change occurring between 250 and 500 ppm dietary Cu levels. A N and Cu balance trial in group feeding conditions involving 65 pigs was conducted in two replicates of a 2 X 2 X 5 factorial arrangement of a split-block design. Pigs were ad libitum fed diets with or without 250 ppm Cu and carbadox at 0 or 55 ppm for a 5-wk period. A fifth treatment group fed the 250 ppm Cu plus carbadox diet was pair-fed to the pigs fed the basal treatment. Growth rate and N retention increased when carbadox, but not when Cu was provided. When carbadox and Cu were provided in combination, either ad libitum or pair-fed, N retention was greater than when the basal diet was fed. This response was attributed to the carbadox addition. The carbadox addition reduced Cu retention and liver Cu concentrations.  相似文献

Calf starter diets were formulated to contain 60 ppm of Zn, 150 or 300 ppm of Zn in the form of Zn-Met and Zn-Lys, or 300 ppm of Zn in the form of ZnO to compare relative bioavailability and effects on immunity. Holstein heifer calves were weaned at wk 5 and fed experimental starter diets from wk 6 to 12. Feed intake, body weight, Zn concentrations in liver and serum fractions, and mineral concentrations in serum were measured to determine the effects of treatment. In addition, peripheral blood lymphocyte blastogenesis, interleukin-2 production, cytotoxic activity, and the ability of blood neutrophils to phagocytose and kill bacteria were assessed at wk 0, 2, 4, and 6 of the trial. Feed intakes and body weight gains were similar among calves. Concentrations of Zn in serum were elevated in calves fed 300 ppm of Zn as Zn-Met and Zn-Lys but not in calves fed ZnO. Concentrations of Zn in liver were significantly elevated by 300 ppm of Zn in the form of Zn-Met and Zn-Lys (360 micrograms/g) but not by the other Zn treatments or by the control (245 micrograms/g). No treatment had an effect on the concentrations of Lys and Met in serum; however, concentrations of Lys did decrease in serum as the age of the calves increased. There was no significant treatment effect on mitogen-induced lymphocyte blastogenesis, interleukin-2 production, lymphocyte cytotoxicity, or phagocytic and intracellular killing ability of blood neutrophils. These data indicated greater absorption and retention of Zn when administered in the form of Zn-Met and Zn-Lys than that when ZnO was administered to young calves. However, there was no advantage to the immune function of extra dietary Zn.  相似文献

Three trials were conducted to test whether feeding the leucine metabolite beta-hydroxy-beta-methyl butyrate (HMB) would increase fat content of sows' milk and pig weight gain. All sows received a basal diet and were assigned at random to receive either 2 g of CaCO3/d (control) or 2 g of Ca(HMB)2/d (HMB), which was top-dressed to the basal diet. Treatment began 3 to 4 d before farrowing. In Trials 1, 2, and 3 there were 4, 19, and 11 pairs of sows, respectively. In a combined analysis that included all three trials, milk fat at d 1 was increased by 41% (P = .01) and pig weight at d 21 was increased by 7% (P = .01) for sows fed diets containing HMB compared with sows fed control diets. Sows fed HMB lost more backfat (P = .03); however, sows receiving HMB had more (P < .05) backfat depth at farrowing than control sows. At weaning there was no difference in backfat depth between the treatment groups. Sows fed HMB tended to consume less feed (P = .07) than control sows. In Trials 2 and 3, data were collected on the subsequent reproductive cycles of the sows. A combined analysis of the data revealed no differences in sow performance when sows previously fed the diet containing HMB were compared with sows previously fed the control diet. In conclusion, beta-hydroxy-beta-methyl butyrate, when fed to sows at 2 g/d, resulted in an increase in fat percentage of sow's milk and pig performance.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare recombinant transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) spike protein, (SP) R2-2, with attenuated live virus (ALV) vaccine in sows during late pregnancy. ANIMALS: 13 TGEV-seronegative sows and their pigs. PROCEDURE: At prepartum weeks (PPW) 6 and 4, sows of groups 1 and 2 received ALV via the oral/intranasal (O/IN) route. At PPW 2, group-1 sows received ALV IM and group-2 sows received SPR2-2 IM. Group-3 sows received SPR2-2 IM at PPW 4 and ALV O/IN at PPW 2. Sows of group 4 (negative controls) were inoculated O/IN with mock-infected ST cell fluids at PPW 6 and 4 and IM with Sf9 cell lysates at PPW2 (n = 2), or IM with Sf9 cell lysates at PPW4 and O/IN with mock-infected ST cell fluids at PPW2 (2). Serum, colostrum, and milk samples were tested for antibody to TGEV, and a lymphoproliferative (LP) assay was done on blood mononuclear cells. Suckling pigs were challenge exposed with virulent TGEV. RESULTS: Sows of groups 1 and 2 had higher IgG and significantly higher antibody titers in colostrum; their pigs had significantly higher serum antibody titer. At challenge exposure of their pigs, LP responses of group-2 sows were significantly higher than those of sows in the other 3 groups. Mean pig mortality ranged from 43 (group 2) to 92% (group 4). Significant negative correlations were observed among litter mortality and sow LP response, colostral titer, and pig serum titer at time of challenge exposure. CONCLUSIONS: In sows vaccinated twice with attenuated live TGEV, the recombinant SPR2-2 administered IM may be comparable to ALV administered IM as a booster. Vaccination failed to provide complete protection to suckling pigs after challenge exposure.  相似文献

The effect of daily or interval (every 3 d) feeding on body weight change, blood glucose and cholecystokinin (CCK) concentrations, immune function, and behavioral activity were determined during the gestation period of sows. Sows were fed a corn-soybean meal diet either 2 kg daily or 6 kg once every 3rd d (interval). Body weight changes for the 42-d trial period were not different (P > .05) between regimens. Blood glucose concentrations were similar before feeding (P > .05). Two hours after feeding, glucose concentrations increased in interval-fed sows but not in daily-fed sows (P < .05). Premeal plasma CCK concentrations were greater for daily-fed sows than for interval-fed sows (P < .05). The CCK concentrations in sows of both regimens increased after feeding above premeal levels (P < .05), and interval-fed sows exhibited higher concentrations than daily-fed sows (P < .05). Immune function as evaluated through mitogen-induced proliferation of T cells was greater in daily-fed sows than in interval-fed sows (P < .05). Daily-fed sows were more active overall and on any given day than interval-fed sows (P < .05) and thus seemed to expend more energy. Further, daily-fed sows exhibited higher levels of mouth-based activities (i.e., sham chewing, licking, appetitive and consummatory feeding behavior, and excess drinking) than sows restricted to consumption of one large meal every 3rd d. These indicators suggest that feeding motivation significantly affected overall performance of sows. This study emphasizes the need for evaluating the impact of feeding regimens and meal size on feeding motivation and, ultimately, on the well-being of the gestating sows.  相似文献

Thirty-three Yorkshire barrows (92 kg), fed a high cholesterol diet for 14 d had mean concentrations of serum cholesterol of 294.6 +/- 7.8 mg/dl. Starting on d 15 and for an additional 15 d, crystalline cholesterol was removed from the diet and pigs were assigned to one of four treatments: including two levels of calcium (0.7% and 1.4%) with and without added viable Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 43121 (2.5 x 10(11) cells per feeding). Serum cholesterol levels decreased, as expected, for all groups. However, the declines were initiated sooner for the groups receiving L. acidophilus. and those receiving the high level of calcium than for the respective control groups. When averaged over days, pigs fed L. acidophilus had 11.8% lower total cholesterol than pigs fed a diet without L. acidophilus. Similarly, pigs fed 1.4% calcium had a significantly lower total cholesterol than pigs fed 0.7% calcium. The effects were greater on low density lipoprotein cholesterol than on high density lipoprotein cholesterol. In addition, during the overall 15-d experimental period, serum bile acids were reduced 23.9% by dietary L. acidophilus and by 21.4% by 1.4% dietary calcium compared with those of their controls. Total bile acid concentration was positively correlated with total cholesterol concentration for pigs fed L. acidophilus or 1.4% calcium. These data suggest that both L. acidophilus and calcium can enhance the reduction of serum cholesterol in pigs that had been fed a high cholesterol diet, probably through alteration in the enterohepatic circulation of bile acids.  相似文献

Groups of ten male and female weanling Sprague-Dawley rats were fed diet containing 0, 5, 50, 500 or 5000 ppm of a medium-chain chlorinated paraffin (C14-17, 52% chlorination) for a period of 13 weeks. Increased relative liver weight was observed at 500 and 5000 ppm in females and at 5000 ppm in males. Relative kidney weight was increased at 5000 ppm in both sexes. Serum cholesterol was increased in the females in a dose-related manner starting at 50 ppm. At 5000 ppm, animals of both sexes had elevated hepatic UDP-glucuronosyltransferase activity while only females showed increased aminopyrine N-demethylase activity. Increased urinary N-acetylglucosaminidase activity occurred at 5000 ppm in females. Increased urinary ascorbic acid excretion monitored at week 12 and a decreased hepatic vitamin A level were detected in females receiving the 500 ppm diet and male and female rats at 5000 ppm. Mild, adaptive histopathological changes were detected in the liver of rats of both sexes at 500 and 5000 ppm, and in the thyroid of males and females starting at 500 and 50 ppm respectively. Minimal changes were observed in the kidney proximal tubules of male rats fed the 5000 ppm diet and in the inner medulla tubules of female rats fed the 500 and 5000 ppm diets. These data indicate that the medium-chain chlorinated paraffin produces biochemical and histological changes at dietary levels of greater than or = 50 ppm in females and greater than or = 500 ppm in males.  相似文献

Twenty-four male Holstein calves were used to determine the effects of dietary Cu and Mo on performance, Cu status, and immune function of calves. Calves were fed a milk replacer that was deficient in Cu for 8 wk and then were randomly assigned after weaning to one of four treatments: 1) control (no supplemental Cu or Mo), 2) 10 mg of Cu (from CuSO4)/kg of dry matter (DM) (Cu diet), 3) 5 mg of Mo (from Na2MoO4)/kg of DM (Mo diet), or 4) 5 mg of Cu (from CuSO4) and 5 mg of Mo (from Na2MoO4)/kg of DM (Cu + Mo diet). The basal diet was a semipurified diet that contained approximately 1.1 mg of Cu and 1.1 mg of Mo/kg of DM. Calves fed the Cu and Mo diets gained weight more efficiently than those fed the control and Cu + Mo diets during the 112-d study. By d 84 of the study, calves fed the Cu diet had higher plasma Cu concentrations and plasma ceruloplasmin activities than did calves fed the other three diets and had higher liver Cu concentrations on d 136. Plasma and liver Cu concentrations did not differ among calves fed the control, Mo, and Cu + Mo diets. At d 112, activity of Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase was lower in calves fed the Mo diet than in calves fed the Cu diet. Serum total antibodies to porcine erythrocytes (primary response) were lower in calves fed the Mo diet than in calves fed the Cu diet at 7, 14, and 21 d postinoculation. Production of tumor necrosis factor and interleukin-1 by isolated peripheral blood monocytes was not significantly affected by treatment. Although no differences were apparent in plasma or liver Cu concentrations among calves fed the control, Mo, and Cu + Mo diets, calves fed the Mo diet had a more severe Cu deficiency based on depressed humoral immune response and superoxide dismutase activity.  相似文献

A cooperative experiment involving 501 litters was conducted at four stations to assess the effects of supplemental lysine on lactational performance of sows nursing large litters. Basal diets were formulated to contain .60% lysine from corn or sorghum and soybean meal. Lysine.HCl (78.8% lysine) was substituted for grain to achieve dietary lysine levels of .75 and .90%. First-parity sows nursed a minimum of nine pigs per litter and older sows a minimum of 10 pigs per litter by d 3 of lactation. Overall mean litter size at 21 d of age was 9.7 pigs. Sows remained on treatment for three successive parities unless culled for structural unsoundness or reproductive failure. Dietary lysine did not affect body weight or backfat loss during lactation, sow ADFI, interval from weaning to estrus, or litter size at birth or at 21 d of age. Mean pig weights at birth and at 21 d of age increased quadratically to increasing lysine, with improvements found at all stations from increasing lysine from .60 to .75%. Twenty-one-day pig weights did not increase at the highest lysine level at stations feeding corn, but did improve at the station feeding sorghum, which resulted in a treatment x station interaction (P < .05). The different responses to lysine on different grain sources indicates intake of one or more other amino acid may have limited lactation performance at the highest level of lysine. These data indicate that a 13% CP corn-soybean meal containing .60% lysine is inadequate for sows nursing large litters and that supplemental synthetic lysine beyond .15% additional lysine will not be beneficial due to a deficiency of one or more other amino acids.  相似文献

Twenty-four crossbred barrows (average BW, 70.8 kg) were used to compare the digestibility of dry matter and the mineral absorption and retention by pigs fed two Cu sources. Dietary treatments were 1) basal (B) (16% CP corn-soybean meal-based diet, 36 mg/kg of Cu), 2) B + 200 mg/kg of Cu from CuSO4.5 H2O (CuSO4), and 3) B + 200 mg/kg of Cu from a copper lysine complex (CuLys). All diets contained equal lysine content and .05% chromic oxide for indirect determination of absorption. Two 7-d total collection periods were conducted. Pigs were fed 8% of metabolic BW (BW.75) divided into two equal feedings. Average daily gain tended to be higher for pigs fed CuLys than for pigs fed CuSO4 (P < .02). Dry matter digestibilities were similar (P > .10) among treatments. The absolute amount of Cu absorbed and retained was greater for pigs fed both Cu sources (P < .001) than for pigs fed the control diet. Iron and Zn intake and excretion and the percentage of Fe absorbed and retained were similar (P > .10) among treatment groups. Chromium intake and excretion in feces were not different (P > .10), with an average recovery of 93.8%. Indirect DM digestibility was similar to total collection values; however, mineral values were similar only after correction for Cr recovery. Pigs fed elevated Cu absorbed more Cu, with no difference between the two sources. Zinc and Fe absorption and retention were generally not affected (P > .10) by Cu addition or sources. The absorption and retention of Cu was similar for pigs fed growth-stimulative levels of Cu from CuSO4 or copper lysine complex.  相似文献

Preparturient sows were randomly assigned to either a farrowing crate (n = 12) or farrowing pen (n = 12) across cool and hot seasons (with or without drip cooling) to study space allocation and temperature effects on periparturient maternal behaviors, steroid concentrations, and piglet growth rates. Concentrations of estradiol-17 beta (E2 beta), progesterone (P4), and cortisol were quantified in blood collected from surgically implanted vena cava cannulas. Sows were videotaped from 2 h before to 2 h after farrowing. Similar periparturient behaviors were displayed by all sows, regardless of farrowing environment. Sows in pens had lower (P < .05) prepartum P4 concentrations from d -6 to the day preceding farrowing and a reduced (P < .05) piglet birth interval compared with sows in crates (12.95 +/- 1.35 min vs 18.31 +/- 2.21 min, respectively). Additionally, compared with multiparous sows in crates, multiparous sows in pens weaned heavier piglets (P < .05). Estradiol-17 beta concentrations were lower (P < .01) throughout lactation during hot weather for sows with or without drip cooling, averaging 9.30 pg/mL and 8.57 pg/mL, respectively, compared with 18.65 pg/mL for sows during cool weather. This decrease in E2 beta concentration in sows during hot weather was correlated with an extended (P < .05) interval from weaning to first estrus for the sows in hot weather compared to sows during cool weather. Cortisol concentrations decreased progressively during lactation and were not associated with litter weight gains or the interval between weaning and first estrus.  相似文献

We conducted an experiment to determine the proportion of the lysine requirement of lactating sows that can be met using L-lysine x HCl. A total of 247 Pig Improvement Company (PIC) sows (parity one to four) were randomly allotted to one of five experimental diets containing .79% apparently digestible lysine. The first four diets contained 0, .075, .150, and .225% L-lysine x HCl replacing the intact lysine, primarily derived from soybean meal. Dietary crude protein was reduced from 17.9 to 16.9, 15.8, and 14.8% respectively. The fifth diet contained .174% L-lysine x HCl (15.5% CP) with added synthetic methionine, threonine, and tryptophan to restore the ratios of these amino acids to lysine to those in the control diet with no synthetic amino acids. The average lactation length was 15.7 +/- .3 d. Diet did not affect ADFI, sow backfat loss, sow loin eye area loss, or weaning-to-mating interval. Sows consumed an average of 4.6 kg/d and were provided 36 g/d of digestible lysine. Replacing soybean meal with increasing levels of L-lysine x HCl did not affect sow weight change. The number of pigs weaned decreased and preweaning mortality increased linearly (P = .08) with increasing levels of L-lysine x HCl. Litters from sows fed the .174% L-lysine x HCl with added methionine, threonine, and tryptophan grew slower and had a higher mortality rate than litters from sows fed no synthetic amino acids (P < .05). The addition of synthetic methionine, threonine, and tryptophan to the .174% L-lysine x HCl diet did not improve litter growth rate, but it did increase preweaning mortality (P = .05) and decrease the number of pigs weaned (P = .06) compared to the .15% L-lysine x HCl with no additional synthetic amino acids. These additions also resulted in an increased sow weight loss (P = .10). These results suggest that when more than .075% L-lysine x HCl is used to meet the lysine requirement preweaning mortality is increased and the number of pigs weaned is decreased. Supplementation with methionine, threonine, and tryptophan failed to ameliorate the negative response associated with L-lysine x HCl, which suggests that other amino acids may be limiting.  相似文献

Changes in copper concentration in the arterial wall are important because of cross-linkage formation in collagen and elastin. The breakdown of the elastic layer is characteristic for aneurysm and is affected by the abnormalities in copper metabolism. This study was undertaken to evaluate Ca, Mg, Zn and Cu concentrations and their relationships in the arterial wall, serum and calcified plaque in atherosclerosis obliterans (AO) and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AA). Samples of the aorta wall were obtained at the endarterectomy in AO and the vascular reconstruction in AA. Elements were determined by means of atomic absorption spectrometry. Serum concentrations of Zn and Cu were higher and that of Ca lower in AO as compared to AA and the controls. Arterial concentrations of Zn, Cu and Mg were higher in AO as compared to AA. The ratios of element concentrations in serum (Ca/Mg, Ca/Zn and Mg/Cu) were higher in serum in AA than in AO. Positive correlations were calculated for Ca and Mg (r > or = 0.74), Ca and Zn (r > or = 0.73), Mg and Zn (r > or = 0.90) in the arterial wall in AO and AA. Low but significant correlation was calculated for Cu concentrations between serum and the arterial wall in AA (r = 0.43). Concentrations of Ca, Mg, Zn and Cu were higher in plaque than in the surrounding tissue. The results indicate differences in arterial and serum concentrations of Ca, Mg, Zn and Cu between AO and AA and the accumulation of these elements in the plaque rather than in the surrounding vascular tissue.  相似文献

Three experiments conducted with grower-finisher pigs evaluated sodium selenite and a Se-enriched yeast source at various dietary Se levels on Se retention, tissue and serum Se concentrations, and serum glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity. Experiment 1 was a balance trial conducted in a 2 x 3 factorial arrangement in a randomized complete block (RCB) design in six replicates. Both Se sources were added at .1, .3, or .5 ppm Se. Crossbred barrows (n = 36) averaging 35.9 kg BW were placed in individual metabolism crates and fed their treatment diets, with feces and urine collected for a 7-d test period. Selenium retention increased as dietary Se levels increased, particularly when the Se-enriched yeast was provided, resulting in a Se source x Se level interaction (P < .01). As dietary Se levels increased, urinary Se increased more when pigs were fed sodium selenite, whereas fecal Se increased more when the Se-enriched yeast was fed; both excretion routes resulting in Se level x Se source interaction responses (P < .01). Experiments 2 and 3 were conducted as RCB involving grower (n = 210) and finisher (n = 266) pigs, respectively, and evaluated the two Se sources each at .1, .3, or .5 ppm Se with a non-Se-fortified basal diet serving as a negative control. In Exp. 2, pigs were fed their treatment diets from 22.2 to 60 kg BW in five replicates, whereas in Exp. 3 diets were fed from 65.8 to 105 kg BW in six replicates. Grower pigs fed sodium selenite had serum GSH-Px activity that reached a plateau at .1 ppm Se and .3 ppm when the Se-enriched yeast source was fed, but the interaction response was not significant (P < .15). During the finisher period, serum GSH-Px activity reached a plateau at .1 ppm Se for both Se sources. Serum Se concentrations were lower at .1 ppm Se when the Se-enriched yeast source was fed, resulting in a source x level interaction response for both grower (P < .05) and finisher (P < .01) periods. Loin Se contents were higher in grower and finisher pigs as dietary Se levels increased when the Se-enriched yeast was fed, resulting in a Se source x Se level interaction (P < .01). The results suggest that more Se was retained in muscle tissue when the Se-enriched yeast source was fed, that serum GSH-Px activity reached a plateau at approximately .1 ppm Se, and that sodium selenite may be more biologically available for GSH-Px activity than the Se-enriched yeast source.  相似文献

Selenium (Se), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) concentrations were determined in plasma of 64 mothers at delivery, 58 nonpregnant women, 64 neonates, and 12 infants, aged 2-12 mo. Se and Zn concentrations in mothers at delivery were significantly lower, and Cu higher than in nonpregnant women. Mean Se and Cu concentrations in newborns were statistically lower than those in mothers at delivery, and Zn and Cu concentrations in preterm infants (n = 13) were significantly higher than in fullterm infants (n = 51). Maternal parity had no significant influence on the distribution of plasma trace element levels. No significant differences were observed in Se and Zn levels in maternal and cord blood plasma according to birth weight, contrary to maternal Cu concentration. Significant correlations were found between maternal and cord blood Se content, and between maternal plasma Cu concentration and birth weight of neonates.  相似文献

Production of bovine alpha-lactalbumin in the milk of transgenic pigs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
High production of milk and its components are necessary to allow maximal growth of developing pigs. In this study, transgenic pigs were produced containing the alpha-lactalbumin gene, whose product is a potential limiting component in the production of milk. Two lines of transgenic pigs were produced to analyze the effects that overproduction of the milk protein alpha-lactalbumin may have on milk production and piglet growth. Transgenic pigs were produced through microinjection of the bovine alpha-lactalbumin gene. The gene construct contained 2.0 kb of 5' flanking region, the 2.0 kb coding region, and 329 bp of 3' flanking region. Sows hemizygous for the transgene produced as much as .9 g of bovine alpha-lactalbumin per liter of pig milk. The production of the bovine protein caused approximately a 50% increase in the total alpha-lactalbumin concentration of pig milk throughout a lactation. The concentration of bovine alpha-lactalbumin was highest on d 0 and 5 of lactation and decreased as lactation progressed. The ratio of bovine to porcine alpha-lactalbumin changed during the sow's lactation. This ratio was 4.3 to 1 on d 0 of lactation, but by d 20 of lactation the ratio was .43 to 1. This suggested that the bovine transgene and the endogenous porcine gene are under slightly different control mechanisms. The higher level of total alpha-lactalbumin present on d 0 of lactation was correlated with higher lactose percentage on d 0 in transgenic sows (3.8%), compared with controls (2.6%) (P < .01). Although there was also a trend for higher lactose percentage in transgenic sows on d 5 and 10 of lactation, no significant differences were observed. These data suggest that alpha-lactalbumin is limiting early in lactation of swine. Furthermore, higher concentrations of alpha-lactalbumin early in lactation may boost milk output.  相似文献

Sows were randomly selected and assigned to either the Hurnik-Morris system (HM; n = 59) or a conventional gestation crate system (GC; n = 90) before breeding. The HM system provides housing for sows in small groups. All sows were bred to Duroc x Hampshire commercial boars. A common farrowing barn with 18 farrowing crates was used for the HM and GC sows. The HM sows had less (P<.001) backfat at farrowing. Average parity per sow (P<.046), lifetime number of pigs born per sow (P<.02), lifetime number of pigs born alive per sow (P<.02), and lifetime number weaned per sow (P<.045) were higher for sows housed in the HM system. The total number of sows removed from the GC system was higher (P<.025) than the number leaving the HM system. The higher parity level and lifetime production exhibited by the sows in the HM system indicates that this system supports greater longevity and may reflect the superior effect that this housing system has on animal well-being.  相似文献

Seven pairs of first littermate gilts were used to study the influence of low copper supply and pregnancy on physiological fluids and reproductive performance of first-litter gilts. They were fed semi-purified diets containing either 2.13 or 12.25 micrograms/kg of Cu from 30 days of gestation through two weeks of lactation. Low-Cu gilts had lower plasma Cu in early- and mid- gestation and farrowed piglets with lower plasma Cu and higher plasma Zn concentrations (p < 0.05). Plasma Fe and Mn concentrations were not affected by Cu supply (p > 0.05). Plasma Cu and Fe levels of newborn piglets were lower than those of their dams (p < 0.05) but this was not true for plasma Zn and Mn (p > 0.05). Low-Cu gilts had lower Cu and higher Zn content in colostrum and also lower Cu in milk than control gilts (p < 0.05). No significant differences were found in Fe and Mn levels in colostrum and milk between the two treatments (p > 0.05). Colostrum was richer in Cu and Zn than milk (p < 0.05) but not in Fe and Mn (p > 0.05). The low-Cu diet did not affect (p > 0.05) weight changes during pregnancy. The duration of parturition was shorter for low-Cu than for control gilts (3.19h vs. 5.71h, p < 0.05). Control gilts farrowed larger litters than low-Cu gilts (9.71 vs. 7.57 piglets, p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in live litter weights at birth, one wk. or two wks. of age (p > 0.05). The results indicated that a low-Cu diet and pregnancy had some effect on plasma, colostrum and milk mineral concentrations, as well as on litter size of gilts. An interaction between Cu and Zn was found.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted with a total of 432 broiler chicks to investigate the influence of supplementing different amounts of boron to practical corn-soybean meal diets. The birds were housed in batteries and had free access to feed and water. In Experiment 1, 144 1-day-old broiler chicks were fed a basal diet supplemented with 0, 5, 40, 80, or 120 ppm boron for 21 days. Female body weight was not influenced by the dietary treatments. However, males supplemented with 5 ppm boron were heavier and their tibias resisted more load than the control birds. Overall feed conversion was not influenced by boron. In Experiment 2, 288 1-day-old broiler chicks were fed a basal diet supplemented with 0, 60, 120, 240, or 300 ppm boron for 22 days. Male and female body weights of the 300-ppm group were lower than those of the control birds. Percentage tibia ash was highest with 300 ppm boron. No significant differences were found in intestinal tract weight (grams of intestine per 100 g body weight) among treatments. Boron concentration in the breast muscle and liver increased as dietary concentration of boron increased. Data collected in these two experiments indicated that consumption of diets containing up to 240 ppm boron from hatch to 21 days of age was not detrimental to broiler performance. Data were not conclusive on the need for supplemental boron in broiler diets based on corn and soybean meal.  相似文献
