We synthesized series of shape memory polyurethanes with amorphous reversible phase (Tg‐SMPUs) and systematically studied their microphase structure and shape memory properties. The Tg‐SMPUs having no or less hard phase showed lower shape recovery. When the volume fraction of hard phase was in the range of 20–30%, the Tg‐SMPUs exhibited the highest shape recovery. As the fraction of hard phase increased further the shape recovery decreased, because more polymer components with higher glass transition temperatures (Tgs) would participate in strain storage. For the Tg‐SMPUs having similar Tgs, those polymers having higher volume fraction of hard phase exhibited higher shape fixity, broader shape recovery region, and larger recovery stress. Increasing deformation strain could raise shape fixity and recovery stress but broaden shape recovery region. The highest recovery stress of a material could be achieved when the deformation occurred at its glass transition temperature below which decreasing deformation temperature could not increase recovery stress further. To better understand the shape memory behaviors of synthesized shape memory polyurethane (SMPU) sealant with a tailored transition temperature (Tt) for concrete pavement joints, the thermal and dynamic mechanical properties of SMPU were first characterized to determine the shape memory switching temperature of SMPU. Then the microstructural and mechanical property evolutions of SMPU in the original, programmed, and recovered states during a five‐step thermodynamic cycle were discussed, respectively. The results indicate that the tailored Tt of prepared SMPU can be used as the shape memory switching temperature to match its working temperature. Further, the programming causes the phase separation in SMPU, leading to an obvious anisotropy. The SMPU has satisfactory shape memory performance. The orientation of molecular chains in soft segments is confirmed along the stretching direction. The oriented molecular chains can restore to the naturally curled state during the free recovery. Finally, the programming improves the mechanical properties of SMPU. The recovered SMPU shows a slight decrease in mechanical properties because of the partially impaired crystal structures and broken molecular segments during the programming and recovery. It is concluded that the synthesized SMPU with the specially tailored Tt is suitable to use as a sealant of concrete pavement joints. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Understanding the relationship between the number‐average molecular weight (Mn) and the shape memory behavior of polymers is crucial for a complete picture of their thermomechanical properties, and hence for the development of smart materials, and, in particular, in textile technology. We report here on the study of shape memory properties as a function of Mn of polymers. Shape memory polyurethanes (SMPUs) of different Mn were synthesized, with various catalyst contents or molar ratio(r = NCO/OH) in the composition. In particular, two types of SMPU, namely Tm and Tg types according to their switch temperature type, were synthesized to compare the influence of Mn on their shape memory behavior. X‐ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, and shape memory behavior results for the SMPUs are presented. The results indicate that the melting temperature (Tm), the glass transition temperature (Tg), the crystallinity, and the crystallizability of the soft segment in SMPUs are influenced significantly by Mn, before reaching a critical limit around 200 000 g mol?1. Characterization of the shape memory effect in PU films suggests that the Tm‐type films generally show higher shape fixities than the Tg‐type films. In addition, this shape fixity decreases with increasing Mn in the Tg‐type SMPU, but the shape recovery increases with Mn in both types of SMPU. The shape recovery temperature, in contrast, decreases with Mn as suggested by the result of their thermal strain recovery. It is concluded that a higher molecular weight (Mn > 200 000 g mol?1) is a prerequisite for SMPUs to exhibit higher shape recovery at a particular temperature. In this communication, novel moisture-sensitive shape memory polyurethane (SMPU) was synthesized from 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and N,N-bis(2-hydroxylethyl) isonicotinamide (BINA) and 1,4-butanediol (BDO). Results show that the BINA based SMPUs have excellent moisture absorption properties which are not only influenced by the temperature, but also by the relative humidity (RH). As a result, high strain recovery with fast recovery speed is obtained after immersion in the moisture condition for a short time. FT-IR spectra provide a proof to the mechanism of moisture-sensitive SME which is based on the dissociation or disrupt of hydrogen bonding in the pyridine ring induced by moisture absorption. Thus, the strain recovery is achieved in the moisture-sensitive SMPUs by decreasing the glass transition temperature (Tg) below ambient temperature without external heating.  相似文献

This paper describes a shape memory behavior of graft copolymers poly(methyl methacrylate)-graft-poly(ethylene glycol) (PMMA-g-PEG). In shape memory test, the sample was deformed from its original shape to a temporary shape above glass transition temperature (Tg), cooled below Tg to fix the temporary shape, and subsequently heated above Tg for spontaneous recovery to the original shape. By grafting PEG onto PMMA backbone, shape memory ability was drastically enhanced than PMMA homopolymer. The shape recovery ratio was decreased with the increase in the shape deformation temperature. With considering a good miscibility of backbone and side chain in PMMA-g-PEG, this shape memory ability may be related to a physically cross-linked network structure by chain entanglement of the comb-like graft copolymer. Stress relaxation measurements were investigated in order to confirm the effect of the graft chains on the shape memory behavior.  相似文献

This article demonstrates a comparative investigation about the effect of diisocyanate on pyridine containing shape memory polyurethanes (Py‐SMPUs), which are synthesized with N,N‐bis(2‐hydroxylethyl)isonicotinamide (BINA) and four different diisocyanates: 1,6‐hexanediisocyante (HDI), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), and tolylene diisocyanate (TDI). Results show that all BINA–SMPU systems have amorphous reversible phase. Comparatively, the MDI–BINA and TDI–BINA systems show higher Tg; and the HDI–BINA and IPDI–BINA systems show better thermal stability. In addition, the HDI–BINA and the IPDI–BINA systems exhibit good thermal‐induced shape memory effect and good moisture‐sensitive shape memory effect due to their better moisture absorption properties. Particularly, the HDI–BINA system has better response speed and better shape recovery. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2014 , 131, 40721.  相似文献

Epoxy‐based shape‐memory polymers (ESMPs) are a type of the most promising engineering smart polymers. However, their inherent brittleness limits their applications. Existing modification approaches are either based on complicated chemical reactions or done at the cost of the thermal properties of the ESMPs. In this study, a simple approach was used to fabricate ESMPs with the aim of improving their overall properties by introducing crosslinked carboxylic nitrile–butadiene nanorubber (CNBNR) into the ESMP network. The results show that the toughness of the CNBNR–ESMP nanocomposites greatly improved at both room temperature and the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) over that of the pure ESMP. Meanwhile, the increase in the toughness did not negatively affect other macroscopic properties. The CNBNR–ESMP nanocomposites presented improved thermal properties with a Tg in a stable range around 100 °C, enhanced thermal stabilities, and superior shape‐memory performance in terms of the shape‐fixing ratio, shape‐recovery ratio, shape‐recovery time, and repeatability of shape‐memory cycles. The combined property improvements and the simplicity of the manufacturing process demonstrated that the CNBNR–ESMP nanocomposites are desirable candidates for large‐scale applications in the engineering field as smart structural materials. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of electroactive shape memory polyurethane (SMPU) nanocomposites were synthesized from poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol (PTMG), 4,4-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) (MDI) and 1,3-butandiol (1,3-BD) with the addition of various amounts of thermally reduced graphenes (TRG) which were chemically modified with allyl isocyanate (iTRG). The effects of iTRG on electroactive shape recovery behaviors as well as the conventional direct heat actuated SMPU material have been studied in terms of morphological, thermal, mechanical, electrical properties and thermomechanical cyclic behavior. It was found that significant increases in electrical conductivity and temperature were obtained high iTRG contents (>2%) to electrically actuate the nanocomposite, along with large increases in glass transition temperature (Tg) and initial modulus with a dramatic drop in elongation at break.  相似文献

Three benzoxazines based on o‐allylphenol and 1,6‐hexamethylenediamine (HDA) or 4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl methane (DDM) or 4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl ether (DDE) were respectively blended with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol‐A (DGEBA) in various weight ratios followed by thermal polymerization to prepare three series of benzoxazine/DGEBA copolymers. With increasing DGEBA content, the peak temperature of the exothermic peaks in the DSC curves shows a systematic increase for the three series of benzoxazine/DGEBA blends. Each copolymer shows a single glass transition temperature (Tg). As the content of DGEBA is increased, Tg reaches a minimum for the copolymer system based on HDA but a maximum for the two systems based on DDM and DDE. For the same benzoxazine/DGEBA weight ratio, copolymers based on DDM and DDE show high Tg values over those based on HDA. The three series of benzoxazine/DGEBA copolymers exhibit a one‐way dual shape memory effect based on Tg, and the shape memory properties of the copolymers under tensile deformation mode vary with the variation of both diamine bridge structure and DGEBA content. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A type of thermal-induced shape memory polymer was fabricated using a new epoxy resin-polybutadiene epoxy (PBEP) and bisphenol A-type cyanate ester in different mass ratios. Mechanical performance, thermal properties, and shape memory behaviors were investigated systematically. This polymer system presented good shape memory properties. The deformation recovery speed increased with the increase in the amount of PBEP. The maximum deformation recovery speed was 0.0128 s?1, and the minimum value was 0.0073 s?1. The deformation recovery rate was almost 100 %.  相似文献

The mechanical hysteresis of a polyether polyurethane thermoplastic elastomer was studied as a function of temperature, percent strain, and deformation energy. Hysteresis values remained small at low temperatures when the extent of the sample deformation did not disrupt the glassy matrix. This was readily evident at temperatures below the glass transition temperature, Tg of the polymer where the material did not formally yield. At temperatures above the Tg of the polymer, hysteresis remained small even at substantial strains levels and demonstrated the capabilities of the hard segment domains to act as physical crosslinks. At elevated temperatures, percent hysteresis increased as the hydrogen-bonded hard segment domains weakened. When mechanical hysteresis was considered on the basis of constant deformation energies, hysteresis values reached a maximum in the vicinity of the Tg of the polymer. These maxima existed as a consequence of two opposing trends: the decreasing resiliency of the polymer as it becomes a glass and the increase in the resistance of that glass to undergo deformations sufficient to cause plastic flow. Finally, a hysteresis response surface constructed as a function of deformation energy and temperature was found to be sensitive to both the strain-induced crystallization of the rubbery soft segment matrix and to the strain-induced yielding of the glassy soft segment matrix.  相似文献

The polyurethane composites with conducting carbon black (CB) were prepared by a solution‐precipitation process, which was followed by melt compression molding. The polyurethane used has good shape memory effect. The morphology of CB fillers in polyurethane matrix and the resulting conductivity of the composites were investigated. It has been found that CB fillers exist in the forms of aggregates. The percolation threshold is achieved at the CB concentration of 20 wt %. The presence of CB fillers decreases the degree of crystallinity of polycaprolactone (PCL) soft segments of the polyurethane. However, the composites still have enough soft‐segment crystals of polyurethane to fulfil the necessary condition for the shape memory properties. Dynamic mechanical data show that CB is an effective filler for the reinforcement of the polyurethane matrix, but does not deteriorate the stable physical cross‐link structure of the polyurethane, which is necessary to store the elastic energy in the service process of the shape memory materials. Addition of CB reinforcement in the polyurethane has influenced the strain recovery properties, especially for those samples with CB concentrations above the percolation threshold. The response temperature of the shape memory effect Tr has not been affected too much. Strain fixation Sf, which expresses the ability of the specimens to fix their strain, has been improved in the presence of the CB fillers. The final recovery rates Rf and strain recovery speeds Vr of the shape memory measurements, however, have decreased evidently. It is expectedly ascribed to the increased bulk viscosity as well as the impeding effect of the inter‐connective structure of CB fillers in the polymer matrix. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A thermally induced shape memory polymer based on epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) was produced by curing the ENR with 3‐amino‐1,2,4‐triazole as a crosslinker in the presence of bisphenol‐A as a catalyst. Dynamic mechanical and tensile analysis was conducted to examine the variation of glass transition temperature, stiffness, and extensibility of the vulcanizates with the amount of curatives. Shape memory properties of the ENR vulcanizates were characterized by shape retention and shape recovery. It was revealed that the glass transition temperature of the ENR vulcanizates could be tuned well above room temperature by increasing the amount of curing agents. Also, ENR vulcanizates with Tg higher than ambient temperature showed good shape memory effects under 100% elongation, and the response temperatures of the recovery were well matched with Tg of the samples. This study conducts a comprehensive assessment of shape memory polyurethane (SMPU) composite foams with isocyanate-modified hydroxyapatite (imHA) nanoparticles in terms of their pore structures, mechanical properties, shape memory effects and biocompatibility in vitro. The results obtained in the research reveal the effectiveness of imHA nanoparticles in SMPU foams as inorganic cross-linking fillers, which contribute to the enhancement of mechanical properties and shape memory performance. Pore structures and compressive properties are simultaneously optimized when imHA content increases. The imHA enhanced SMPU foam could be adopted as a promising alternative for overcoming the disadvantages of traditional polymer scaffolds, such as insufficient mechanical properties, inadequate pore structure, low bioactivity and inconvenience in operation for bone regeneration.  相似文献

Drilling fluid loss is a major problem with serious economic and environmental consequences. The use of traditional lost circulation materials (LCMs) to seal wide fractures increases the risk of bit nozzle plugging. In this work, smart LCMs based on shape memory polyurethane (SMPU) are proposed for the first time. SMPU can be programmed to recover at temperatures suited to a given well. As such, SMPU smoothly passes through the bit nozzles, while effectively seal wide fractures once activated. The SMPU is prepared by two step pre-polymerization and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimeter. The SMPU is programmed by changing and fixing the original shape to a temporary shape through a thermo-mechanical process. The shape memory behavior of SMPU is analyzed by tensile apparatus. Compatibility of SMPU with WBMs is determined from mud rheology and filtration tests. Fracture sealing efficiency and shape recovery of SMPU are evaluated by a modified particle permeability apparatus fitted with a model fracture. The results confirm high sealing and shape recovery attributes of SMPU. The plug formed at 114 kg m–3 SMPU and 80 °C experiences a sealing pressure of 100 bar with 71.5 cm3 cumulative fluid loss.  相似文献

Shape memory polyurethane (SMPU), flexibly crosslinked via a polyethyleneglycol (PEG) spacer attached to its side through an allophanate group, was tested for shape memory and compared with a linear SMPU. The new SMPU was composed of 4,4′‐methylenebis(phenylisocyanate) (MDI), poly(tetramethyleneglycol) (PTMG‐2000), and 1,4‐butanediol (BD), and included polyethyleneglycol (PEG‐200) as a spacer. A second MDI, linked to the carbamate group of the first MDI, served as the connecting point for the PEG‐200. Two types of SMPU, differing according to their soft segment (PTMG‐2000) and linker (PEG‐200) contents, were compared in mechanical and shape memory properties. In the best case, a 780% increase in maximum stress was attained without any sacrifice in strain for the new material compared with the linear polymer. In particular, the stress–strain curve showed that the PEG‐crosslinked SMPU had superior tensile mechanical properties. Its shape recovery was as high as 99%, which is the best value we have measured for an SMPU. After four cyclic tests, shape recovery remained greater than 95%. Shape retention of the best SMPU remained above 93% even after four cyclic tests. Here, results demonstrating the extraordinary shape memory properties of these types of SMPU, together with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and infrared spectroscopy data, are analyzed and discussed. Electroactive shape memory polymer (SMP) composites capable of shape actuation via resistive heating are of interest for various biomedical applications. However, water uptake into SMPs will produce a depression of the glass transition temperature (Tg) resulting in shape recovery in vivo. While water actuated shape recovery may be useful, it is foreseen to be undesirable during early periods of surgical placement into the body. Silicone membranes have been previously reported to prevent release of conductive filler from an electroactive polymer composite in vivo. In this study, a silicone membrane was used to inhibit water uptake into a thermoset SMP composite containing conductive filler. Thermoset polyurethane SMPs were loaded with either 5 wt % carbon black or 5 wt % carbon nanotubes, and subsequently coated with either an Al2O3‐ or silica‐filled silicone membrane. It was observed that the silicone membranes, particularly the silica‐filled membrane, reduced the rate of water absorption (37°C) and subsequent Tg depression versus uncoated composites. In turn, this led to a reduction in the rate of recovery of the permanent shape when exposed to water at 37°C. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132, 41226.  相似文献

Photoinitiated polymer networks were formed by copolymerization of tert‐butyl acrylate with di(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (DEGDMA) or poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA). The degree of crosslinking was systematically varied by modifying the weight fraction and molecular weight of the dimethacrylate crosslinking agent. An increase in effective crosslink density with increasing crosslinking agent concentrations was confirmed by decreasing equilibrium swelling ratios (q) and increasing rubbery moduli (ER). Glass transition temperatures (Tg) varied from ?22 to 124°C, increasing with increasing DEGDMA content and decreasing with increasing PEGDMA content. Tensile deformation behavior (at Tg) ranged from an elastomeric‐like large‐strain response for lightly crosslinked materials to a small‐strain brittle response for highly crosslinked networks. At low crosslinking levels, the strain‐to‐failure of the network polymers decreased quickly with increasing crosslinking agent concentration. The stress at failure demonstrated a more complex relationship with crosslinking agent concentration. The effect of composition on network structure and resulting properties (q, ER, strain‐to‐failure) decreased as the crosslinking agent concentration increased. The results reveal trade‐offs in Tg, ER, strain‐to‐failure, and failure stress with composition and network structure, and are discussed in light of the wide range of potential applications suggested in the literature for (meth)acrylate‐based photopolymerizable polymer networks including biomaterials and shape‐memory polymers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Achieving water‐induced shape‐memory property in poly(D,L ‐lactide) (PDLLA), generated by means of advanced processing methods, opens possibilities to develop novel bioresorbable medical devices with shape‐memory properties activated by the human body without external heat. The main phenomena that affect the molecular movements that enable the water‐induced shape‐memory effect in an oriented PDLLA in an aqueous environment at physiological temperature are related to the water driven disruption of the intermolecular dipole‐dipole and/or hydrogen bonding of the oriented PDLLA chains and the subsequent decrease of the glass transition temperature (Tg) to the range of physiological temperature. The diffused water in the polymer matrix decreased the energy needed to finish the glass transition process explaining the higher shape‐recovery rate of the γ‐irradiated PDLLA with respect to the non‐γ‐irradiated PDLLA in an aqueous environment at physiological temperatures. The water‐induced decrease in the Tg was thermally reversible. The efficacy of the generated shape‐memory was tested with PDLLA shape‐memory nails in a pullout test, in which the pullout force of the PDLLA nails increased 360% during a seven day test period in vitro at 37°C. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Shape memory thermosetting polyurethane (SMPU) composites containing different amount of multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) ranging from 0 to 0.250 phr were prepared. The shape memory behavior, tensile stress, and recovery stress were determined by using conventional thermomechanical cycle; however, the modified thermomechanical cycle designated as progressive stretch–relax–stretch (PSRS) cycle was also employed to create shape memory effects in studied composites. The test was carried out in water bath which was equipped with an electric heater, temperature controller, and tensile stress and strain measuring setup. The recovery and tensile stresses both were showing higher values for PSRS samples as compared with conventional samples. Loading of MWCNT improved the recovery stress of SMPU, thereby confirming reinforcing effect. The maximum recovery stress of 2.17 MPa for 0.188 phr MWCNT loading was observed as compared with 1.09 MPa of unreinforced SMPU specimen. The recovery time was also improved on reinforcement as demonstrated in this article. The morphology of fractured surface and degree of dispersion of MWCNT was studied using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope. The impact on glass transition temperature was also observed for MWCNT reinforcement on SMPU, which depends on the degree of dispersion and loading of MWCNT in the specimen. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
