A mixed finite element for hydro‐dynamic analysis in saturated porous media in the frame of the Biot theory is proposed. Displacements, effective stresses, strains for the solid phase and pressure, pressure gradients, and Darcy velocities for the fluid phase are interpolated as independent variables. The weak form of the governing equations of coupled hydro‐dynamic problems in saturated porous media within the element are given on the basis of the Hu–Washizu three‐field variational principle. In light of the stabilized one point quadrature super‐convergent element developed in solid continuum, the interpolation approximation modes for the primary unknowns and their spatial derivatives of the solid and the fluid phases within the element are assumed independently. The proposed mixed finite element formulation is derived. The non‐linear version of the element formulation is further derived with particular consideration of pressure‐dependent non‐associated plasticity. The return mapping algorithm for the integration of the rate constitutive equation, the consistent elastoplastic tangent modulus matrix and the element tangent stiffness matrix are developed. For geometrical non‐linearity, the co‐rotational formulation approach is used. Numerical results demonstrate the capability and the performance of the proposed element in modelling progressive failure characterized by strain localization due to strain softening in poroelastoplastic media subjected to dynamic loading at large strain. An adaptively stabilized monolithic finite element model is proposed to simulate the fully coupled thermo‐hydro‐mechanical behavior of porous media undergoing large deformation. We first formulate a finite‐deformation thermo‐hydro‐mechanics field theory for non‐isothermal porous media. Projection‐based stabilization procedure is derived to eliminate spurious pore pressure and temperature modes due to the lack of the two‐fold inf‐sup condition of the equal‐order finite element. To avoid volumetric locking due to the incompressibility of solid skeleton, we introduce a modified assumed deformation gradient in the formulation for non‐isothermal porous solids. The efficient solution to the coupled system of PDEs governing the mass and the energy balance in deformable porous media requires advanced numerical algorithms. A combination of mixed/Galerkin finite elements and finite volumes along with a staggered method are employed. Fluid flow and heat transfer are addressed iteratively by a fully coupled approach and the medium deformation by an explicitly coupled scheme, at each time step. Such formulation allows for stable numerical solutions, element‐wise conservative velocity fields and accurate prediction of sharp temperature convective fronts. This paper primarily deals with the computational aspects of chemical dissolution‐front instability problems in two‐dimensional fluid‐saturated porous media under non‐isothermal conditions. After the dimensionless governing partial differential equations of the non‐isothermal chemical dissolution‐front instability problem are briefly described, the formulation of a computational procedure, which contains a combination of using the finite difference and finite element method, is derived for simulating the morphological evolution of chemical dissolution fronts in the non‐isothermal chemical dissolution system within two‐dimensional fluid‐saturated porous media. To ensure the correctness and accuracy of the numerical solutions, the proposed computational procedure is verified through comparing the numerical solutions with the analytical solutions for a benchmark problem. As an application example, the verified computational procedure is then used to simulate the morphological evolution of chemical dissolution fronts in the supercritical non‐isothermal chemical dissolution system. The related numerical results have demonstrated the following: (1) the proposed computational procedure can produce accurate numerical solutions for the planar chemical dissolution‐front propagation problem in the non‐isothermal chemical dissolution system consisting of a fluid‐saturated porous medium; (2) the Zhao number has a significant effect not only on the dimensionless propagation speed of the chemical dissolution front but also on the distribution patterns of the dimensionless temperature, dimensionless pore‐fluid pressure, and dimensionless chemical‐species concentration in a non‐isothermal chemical dissolution system; (3) once the finger penetrates the whole computational domain, the dimensionless pore‐fluid pressure decreases drastically in the non‐isothermal chemical dissolution system.  相似文献

This paper presents a continuum formulation based on the theory of porous media for the mechanics of liquid unsaturated porous media. The hysteresis of the liquid retention model is carefully modelled, including the derivation of the corresponding consistent tangent moduli. The quadratic convergence of Newton's method for solving the highly nonlinear system with an implicit finite element code is demonstrated. A u‐p formulation is proposed where the time discretisation is carried out prior to the space discretisation. In this way, the derivation of all consistent moduli is fairly straightforward. Time integration is approximated with the Theta and Newmark's methods, and hence the fully coupled nonlinear dynamics of porous media is considered. It is shown that the liquid retention model requires also the consistent second‐order derivative for quadratic convergence. Some predictive simulations are presented illustrating the capabilities of the formulation, in particular to the modelling of complex porous media behaviour. Effective simulation of the solid‐liquid‐gas coupling effect in unsaturated porous media is of great significance in many diverse areas. Because of the strongly nonlinear characteristics of the fully coupled formulations for the three‐phase porous media, an effective numerical solution scheme, such as the finite element method with an efficient iterative algorithm, has to be employed. In this paper, an efficient finite element procedure based on the adaptive relaxed Picard method is developed for analyzing the coupled solid‐liquid‐gas interactions in porous media. The coupled model and the finite element analysis procedure are implemented into a computer code PorousH2M, and the proposed procedure is validated through comparing the numerical simulations with the experimental benchmarks. It is shown that the adaptive relaxed Picard method has salient advantage over the traditional one with respect to both the efficiency and the robustness, especially for the case of relatively large time step sizes. Compared with the Newton‐Raphson scheme, the Picard method successfully avoids the unphysical ‘spurious unloading’ phenomenon under the plastic deformation condition, although the latter shows a better convergence rate. The proposed procedure provides an important reference for analyzing the fully coupled problems related to the multi‐phase, multi‐field coupling in porous media. The purpose of the present work is to model and to simulate the coupling between the electric and mechanical fields. A new finite element approach is proposed to model strong electro‐mechanical coupling in micro‐structures with capacitive effect. The proposed approach is based on a monolithic formulation: the electric and the mechanical fields are solved simultaneously in the same formulation. This method provides a tangent stiffness matrix for the total coupled problem which allows to determine accurately the pull‐in voltage and the natural frequency of electro‐mechanical systems such as MEMs. To illustrate the methodology results are shown for the analysis of a micro‐bridge. An assumed‐strain finite element technique for non‐linear finite deformation is presented. The weighted‐residual method enforces weakly the balance equation with the natural boundary condition and also the kinematic equation that links the elementwise and the assumed‐deformation gradient. Assumed gradient operators are derived via nodal integration from the kinematic‐weighted residual. A variety of finite element shapes fits the derived framework: four‐node tetrahedra, eight‐, 27‐, and 64‐node hexahedra are presented here. Since the assumed‐deformation gradients are expressed entirely in terms of the nodal displacements, the degrees of freedom are only the primitive variables (displacements at the nodes). The formulation allows for general anisotropic materials and no volumetric/deviatoric split is required. The consistent tangent operator is inexpensive and symmetric. Furthermore, the material update and the tangent moduli computation are carried out exactly as for classical displacement‐based models; the only deviation is the consistent use of the assumed‐deformation gradient in place of the displacement‐derived deformation gradient. Examples illustrate the performance with respect to the ability of the present technique to resist volumetric locking. A constraint count can partially explain the insensitivity of the resulting finite element models to locking in the incompressible limit. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This study presents a numerical integration method for the non‐linear viscoelastic behaviour of isotropic materials and structures. The Schapery's three‐dimensional (3D) non‐linear viscoelastic material model is integrated within a displacement‐based finite element (FE) environment. The deviatoric and volumetric responses are decoupled and the strain vector is decomposed into instantaneous and hereditary parts. The hereditary strains are updated at the end of each time increment using a recursive formulation. The constitutive equations are expressed in an incremental form for each time step, assuming a constant incremental strain rate. A new iterative procedure with predictor–corrector type steps is combined with the recursive integration method. A general polynomial form for the parameters of the non‐linear Schapery model is proposed. The consistent algorithmic tangent stiffness matrix is realized and used to enhance convergence and help achieve a correct convergent state. Verifications of the proposed numerical formulation are performed and compared with a previous work using experimental data for a glassy amorphous polymer PMMA. This paper describes the implicit integration and consistent tangent modulus of an inelastic constitutive model with transient and steady strain rates, both of which are time‐ and temperature‐dependent; the transient rate is influenced by the evolution of back stress decomposed into parts, while the steady rate depends only on applied stress and temperature. Such a non‐unified model is useful for high‐temperature structural analysis and is practical owing to the ease in determining material constants. The implicit integration is shown to result in two scalar‐valued coupled equations, and the consistent tangent modulus is derived in a quite versatile form by introducing a set of fourth‐rank constitutive parameters into the discretized evolution rule of back stress. The constitutive model is, then, implemented in a finite element program and applied to a lead‐free solder joint analysis. It is demonstrated that the implicit integration is very accurate if the multilinear kinematic hardening model of Ohno and Wang is employed, and that the consistent tangent modulus certainly affords quadratic convergence to the Newton–Raphson iteration in solving nodal force equilibrium equations. We present three velocity‐based updated Lagrangian formulations for standard and quasi‐incompressible hypoelastic‐plastic solids. Three low‐order finite elements are derived and tested for non‐linear solid mechanics problems. The so‐called V‐element is based on a standard velocity approach, while a mixed velocity–pressure formulation is used for the VP and the VPS elements. The two‐field problem is solved via a two‐step Gauss–Seidel partitioned iterative scheme. First, the momentum equations are solved in terms of velocity increments, as for the V‐element. Then, the constitutive relation for the pressure is solved using the updated velocities obtained at the previous step. For the VPS‐element, the formulation is stabilized using the finite calculus method in order to solve problems involving quasi‐incompressible materials. All the solid elements are validated by solving two‐dimensional and three‐dimensional benchmark problems in statics as in dynamics. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

For hyperelastic shells with finite rotations and large strains a p‐finite element formulation is presented accommodating general kinematic assumptions, interpolation polynomials and particularly general three‐dimensional hyperelastic constitutive laws. This goal is achieved by hierarchical, high‐order shell models. The tangent stiffness matrices for the hierarchical shell models are derived by computer algebra. Both non‐hierarchical, nodal as well as hierarchical element shape functions are admissible. Numerical experiments show the high‐order formulation to be less prone to locking effects. This paper presents the finite rotation exact geometry (EG) 12‐node solid‐shell element with 36 displacement degrees of freedom. The term ‘EG’ reflects the fact that coefficients of the first and second fundamental forms of the reference surface and Christoffel symbols are taken exactly at each element node. The finite element formulation developed is based on the 9‐parameter shell model by employing a new concept of sampling surfaces (S‐surfaces) inside the shell body. We introduce three S‐surfaces, namely, bottom, middle and top, and choose nine displacements of these surfaces as fundamental shell unknowns. Such choice allows one to represent the finite rotation higher order EG solid‐shell element formulation in a very compact form and to derive the strain–displacement relationships, which are objective, that is, invariant under arbitrarily large rigid‐body shell motions in convected curvilinear coordinates. The tangent stiffness matrix is evaluated by using 3D analytical integration and the explicit presentation of this matrix is given. A coupled finite element model is developed to analyse the thermo‐mechanical behaviour of a widely used polymer composite panel subject to high temperatures at service conditions. Thermo‐chemical and thermo‐mechanical models of previous researchers have been extended to study the thermo‐chemical decomposition, internal heat and mass transfer, deformation and the stress state of the material. The phenomena of heat and mass transfer and thermo‐mechanical deformation are simulated using three sets of governing equations, i.e. energy, gas mass diffusion and deformation equations. These equations are then assembled into a coupled matrix equation using the Bubnov–Galerkin finite element formulation and then solved simultaneously at each time interval. An experimentally tested 1.09 cm thick glass‐fibre woven‐roving/polyester resin composite panel is analysed using the numerical model. Results are presented in the form of temperature, pore pressure, deformation, strain and stress profiles and discussed. The maximum normal stress failure criterion is used in order to establish the load‐bearing capability of the composite panel. Significant pore gas pressure build‐ups (to 0.8 MPa and higher) have been perceived at high thermo‐chemical decomposition rates where the material experiences a complex expansion/contraction phenomenon. It is found that the composite panel experiences structural instability at elevated temperatures up to 300°C but retains its integrity even under moderate external loading. The paper presents aspects of the finite element formulation of momentum and energy conserving algorithms for the non‐linear dynamic analysis of shell‐like structures. The key contribution is a detailed analysis of the implementation of a Simó–Tarnow‐type conservation scheme in a recently developed new mixed finite shell element. This continuum‐based shell element provides a well‐defined interface to strain‐driven constitutive stress updates algorithms. It is based on the classic brick‐type trilinear displacement element and is equipped with specific gradient‐type enhanced strain modes and shell‐typical assumed strain modifications. The excellent performance of the proposed dynamic shell formulation with respect to conservation properties and numerical stability behaviour is demonstrated by means of three representative numerical examples of elastodynamics which exhibit complex free motions of flexible structures undergoing large strains and large rigid‐body motions. Implicit time integration algorithm derived by Simo for his large‐deformation elasto‐plastic constitutive model is generalized, for the case of isotropy and associative flow rule, towards viscoplastic material behaviour and consistently differentiated with respect to its input parameters. Combining it with the general formulation of design sensitivity analysis (DSA) for non‐linear finite element transient equilibrium problem, we come at a numerically efficient, closed‐form finite element formulation of DSA for large deformation elasto‐plastic and elasto‐viscoplastic problems, with various types of design variables (material constants, shape parameters). The paper handles several specific issues, like the use of a non‐algorithmic coefficient matrix or sensitivity discontinuities at points of instantaneous structural stiffness change. We present an algorithmic procedure for the finite element solution of structural problems for no‐tension materials. The approach is based upon a suitable modification of the tangent strategy which is shown to be computationally superior to conventional procedures for non‐linear material models, namely the tangent strategy enhanced with line searches and the tangent‐secant approach. The solution of the constitutive problem for no‐tension materials is derived by an original path of reasoning and its formulation in a strain‐driven format, directly amenable to a computer implementation, is presented. For completeness the existing expressions of the tangent and secant operators for the no‐tension model are briefly recalled and an original formula for the secant operator derived. The robustness of the proposed strategy is exemplified by the numerical results obtained for a masonry panel with openings. Remarkably, the solution is achieved by assigning a single load step and an asymptotically quadratic convergence rate is attained. In this paper, the non‐isothermal elasto‐plastic behaviour of multiphase geomaterials in dynamics is investigated with a thermo‐hydro‐mechanical model of porous media. The supporting mathematical model is based on averaging procedures within the hybrid mixture theory. A computationally efficient reduced formulation of the macroscopic balance equations that neglects the relative acceleration of the fluids, and the convective terms is adopted. The modified effective stress state is limited by the Drucker–Prager yield surface. Small strains and dynamic loading conditions are assumed. The standard Galerkin procedure of the finite element method is applied to discretize the governing equations in space, while the generalized Newmark scheme is used for the time discretization. The final non‐linear set of equations is solved by the Newton method with a monolithic approach. Coupled dynamic analyses of strain localization in globally undrained samples of dense and medium dense sands are presented as examples. Vapour pressure below the saturation water pressure (cavitation) develops at localization in case of dense sands, as experimentally observed. A numerical study of the regularization properties of the finite element model is shown and discussed. Three non‐dispersive models in multi‐dimensions have been developed. The first model consists of a leading‐order homogenized equation of motion subjected to the secularity constraints imposing uniform validity of asymptotic expansions. The second, non‐local model, contains a fourth‐order spatial derivative and thus requires C1 continuous finite element formulation. The third model, which is limited to the constant mass density and a macroscopically orthotropic heterogeneous medium, requires C0 continuity only and its finite element formulation is almost identical to the classical local approach with the exception of the mass matrix. The modified mass matrix consists of the classical mass matrix (lumped or consistent) perturbed with a stiffness matrix whose constitutive matrix depends on the unit cell solution.
