Abstract

The effect of initial density and rapid prestraining on superplastic ductility of 1 wt-%CuO doped cubic zirconia (8Y–CSZ) was investigated. To obtain a range of initial densities, the tensile test specimens were slip cast to net shape and pressureless sintered over a range of temperatures in air. The specimens were then superplastically tested at a temperature of 1500 K and at a constant strain rate of 1×10-4 s-1. The results showed that specimens with low initial densities had lower flow stresses and higher superplastic elongations to failure than higher density specimens. The reasons for the ductility change were discussed with reference to the presence of porosity and grain growth. For the prestraining test, a specimen with an initial density of 95% was prestrained to 30% at a temperature of 1550 K and at a prestrain rate ? · 1 of 1×10-3 s-1, followed by elongation to failure at a slower test strain rate ? · 2 of 1×10-4 s-1. It was seen that prestraining at the above test conditions considerably improved superplastic ductility. The reasons for this ductility enhancement were explained in terms of suppression of grain growth.  相似文献

Superplasticity of mullite-zirconia composite   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Tension tests of mullite-zirconia composite were conducted at elevated temperature. A superplastic elongation of 122% could be achieved at an initial strain rate of 2.86×10–5s–1 at 1550°C. Strain hardening was observed at strain rates from 1.42×10–4 to 2.86×10s–5s–1 at 1550°C. The addition of zirconia grains to the mullite matrix increased the creep rate of the composite.  相似文献

Abstract

The superplastic potential of an aluminium alloy 2124/SiCp composite, fabricated by powder metallurgy techniques, has been investigated. Instead of any special thermomechanical processing or hot extrusion, simple warm rolling has been employed to obtain a fine grained structure before superplastic testing. Constant strain rate tests were performed to characterise the superplastic behaviour of the composite. All tests were performed in air at temperatures of 743–783 K and in the strain rate range 10-3-10-1 S-l. A maximum elongation of 425% was achieved at a temperature of 763 K and a strain rate of 8.3 × 10-2 S-1. The highest value obtained for the strain rate sensitivity index (m) was 0.41. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to ascertain the possibility of any partial melting in the vicinity of optimum superplastic temperature. These results suggested that no liquid phase existed where maximum elongation was achieved and deformation took place entirely in the solid state. Optical and electron microscopy were used to examine the materials microstructure before and after superplastic testing.  相似文献

The superplastic properties of a engineering TiAl based alloy with a duplex microstructure were investigated with respect to the effect of testing temperatures ranging from 950°C to 1075°C and strain rates ranging from 8 × 10–5 s–1 to 2 × 10–3 s–1. A maximum elongation of 467% was achieved at 1050°C and at a strain rate of 8 × 10–5 s–1. The apparent activation energy was calculated to be 345 kJ/mol. Also, the dependence of the strain rate sensitivity values on strain during superplastic deformation was examined through the jump strain rate tests, and microstructural analysis was performed after superplastic deformation. It is concluded that superplasticity of the alloy at relatively low temperature and relatively high strain rate results from dynamic recrystallization, and grain boundary sliding and associated accommodation mechanism is related to superplasticity at higher temperature and lower strain rate.  相似文献

Abstract

Superplasticity in a 7055 aluminum alloy subjected to intense plastic straining through equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) was studied in tension over a range of strain rates from 1.4 × 10-5 to 5.6 × 10-2 s-1 in the temperature interval 300 - 450 °C. The alloy had a grain size of ~ 1 μm. A maximum elongation to failure of ~750% occurred at a temperature of 425 °C and an initial strain rate of 5.6 × 10-4 s-1, with a strain rate sensitivity coefficient m of about 0.46. The highest m value was ~0.5 at a strain rate of 1.4 × 10-3 s-1 and T≥ 425 °C. Moderate superplastic properties with a total elongation of about 435% and m of ~0.4 were recorded in the temperature interval 350 - 400 °C; no cavitation was found. It was shown that the main feature of superplastic behaviour of the ECAE processed 7055 aluminum alloy is a low yield stress and strong strain hardening during the initial stages of superplastic deformation. Comparing the present results with the superplastic behaviour of the 7055 Al subjected to thermomechanical processing (TMP), the highest tensile elongation in the ECAE processed material occurred at lower temperatures because ECAE produces a finer grained structure.  相似文献

High-strain-rate superplastic behavior of a powder-metallurgy processed 2124 alloy prepared through extrusion at a high ratio of 70 : 1 was investigated. A maximum tensile elongation of 700% was obtained at 823 K and at a strain rate of 10–2 s–1. Deformation behavior of this alloy was similar to those reported for other many HSR superplastic materials. Incorporation of threshold stress into the constitutive equation reveals that the true stress exponent is 2 and true activation energy for plastic flow is comparable to that for lattice diffusion in pure aluminum. Comparison of the present alloy with the 2124 Al composite indicates that the composite is weaker than the unreinforced alloy in the temperature range where grain boundary sliding is rate-controlled.  相似文献

Abstract

High strain rate superplasticity(HSRS)of an AA 6013/20SiCpcomposite, produced by powder metallurgy and then hot extruded or hotrolled, was evaluated by means of tensile tests carried out over a range of initial strain rates from 1 × 102 to 3.8 × 10-1 s-1 and temperatures from 520 to 590 ° C. A maximum elongation to failure of 370% was achieved in a hot rolled composite deformed at 1 × 10-1 s-1 and 560 ° C. Substantially lower elongations were achieved in hot extruded composites, with a maximumof200% at1 × 10-2 s -1 and 580 ° C. The lower elongations in the hot extruded composite could be related to the large quantity of intermetallic compounds, shown by TEM analyses, which probably hinder large superplastic elongations. In both hot extruded and hot rolled composite, the flow stress was strongly dependenton temperature and strain rate; a steady state flow stress region was observed in the specimen that exhibited the maximum elongation to failure. The strain rate sensitivity index m reached a maximum ofabout 0.4 for the hot rolled composite, and about 0.35 for the hot extruded composite. Analyses of the fracture surfaces of hot rolled composite deformed at the maximum elongation, were characterised by the presence of many filaments or 'whiskers', which are generally considered as evidence of a liquid phase present at grain boundaries or interfaces.  相似文献

Nanocomposites of Al2O3/Ni–Co prepared using Al2O3 of various particle sizes were fabricated by pulse current electrodeposition. Their superplastic tensile deformation was investigated at strain rates of 8.33 × 10−4 s−1 and 1.67 × 10−3 s−1 and temperatures of 723–823 K. The Al2O3 particle sizes and the deformation temperature had significant influence on the elongation of the deposited materials. The optimal superplastic condition and the maximum elongation were determined. A low temperature superplasticity with elongation of 632% was achieved at a strain rate of 1.67 × 10−3 s−1 and 823 K. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were used to examine the microstructures of the deposited and deformed samples. The grains grew to a micrometer dimensions and were elongated along the tensile direction after superplastic deformation. Superplasticity in electrodeposited nanocomposites is related to the presence of S at grain boundaries and to deformation twinning.  相似文献

Abstract

Composites consisting of 2024 aluminium alloys reinforced with volume fractions of 0, 5, 10, and 15 vol.-% of SiC particles were fabricatedfrom the mechanically alloyed powders by an optimised hot compaction and prestraining process. Fine and equiaxed grain structures with grain sizes of <1 μm were observed within the matrix of each alloy. The composite specimens were compressed at temperatures between 733 and 813 K with a wide strain rate range from 10?3 to 10 s?1. Two strain rate regions with different slopes from ~ 5 × 10?1 s?1 were found in log (true stress–log (strain rate) curves. In the lower strain rate region of each alloy, the strain rate sensitivity values m were 0.03–0.16. The threshold stress σth for each alloy was estimated using an extrapolation procedure. A linear relationship was found between <disp-formula><graphic href="splitsection10-m1.tif"/></disp-formula> and σth where Vf is the volume fraction of SiC particles. In the higher strain rate region of each alloy, m values greater than 0.3 were obtained at 773 K, which is very close to the solidus temperature of 775 K for 2024 aluminium alloy. Moreover, the maximum yield strength and elongation for each alloy at room temperature were also obtained in the specimens compressed at 773 K. Thus, it was found that the optimum temperature for the high strain rate superplastic processing of the composites was just below the solidus temperature of the 2024 aluminium alloy. The grain coarsening resulted in the decrease of post-deformation strength and ductility as well as the m value in hot compression above the solidus temperature.  相似文献

A high-strain-rate superplasticity at strain rates from 10–1 to 1 s–1 (which was many orders of magnitude higher than the strain rates in typical commercial superplastic alloys) was found in a new aluminium-based crystalline alloy, as-extruded Al-Ni-Mm crystalline and Al-Ni-Mm-Zr crystalline alloys (Mm = misch metal) fabricated by warm consolidation of their amorphous or nanocrystalline powders. The alloys were developed with very fine grained structures less than 100 nm in size, with a uniform distribution of both the Al3Mm and the Al3Ni particulates which were 70 nm in diameter. As a result of these specific microstructures, these alloys have superior mechanical properties at room temperature; for example the tensile strength is greater than 800 MPa and the Young's modulus is equal to 96 GPa. As-extruded workpieces of the alloys could be forged superplastically at a commercial production speed (less than 1 s) into complicated components with a con-rod shape, which exhibited good postdeformation mechanical properties.  相似文献

Abstract

The superplastic properties and microstructure evolution of a 0.15%Zr and 0.7%Cu modified 6061 aluminium alloy were examined in tension at temperatures ranging from 475 to 600°C and strain rates ranging from 7 × 10-6 to 2.8 × 10-2 s-1. The refined microstructure with an average grain size of about 11 μm was produced in thin sheets by a commercially viable thermomechanical process. It was shown that the modified 6061 alloy exhibits a moderate superplastic elongation of 580% in the entirely solid state at 570°C and ? = 2.8 × 10-4 s-1. Superior superplastic properties (elongation to failure of 1300% with a corresponding strain rate sensitivity coefficient m of about 0.65) were found at the same strain rate and a temperature of 590°C, which is higher than the incipient melting point of the 6061 alloy (~575°C). The microstructural evolution during superplastic deformation of the 6061 alloy has been studied quantitatively. The presence of a slight amount of liquid phase greatly promotes the superplastic properties of the 6061 alloy, reducing the cavitation level.  相似文献

Crack formation and oxidation during superplastic deformation of Si3N4 were studied and the superplastic forming ability of Si3N4 was discussed. Tensile deformation tests were conducted under a 1 atm nitrogen atmosphere at 1600 °C, and under a constant crosshead speed with an initial strain rate of 2×10–5s–1. The microstructures of superplastically deformed specimens were observed by SEM. The relation between chemical composition and microstructure was determined by EPMA. After 280% deformation (at fracture), the formation of regions rich in glassy phase was observed. These regions, supposed to be formed due to oxidation of cracks, appeared just before fracture. The present material is capable of being deformed up to strains of 210%.  相似文献

Abstract

The superplasticity of an Fe3Al based intermetallic alloy with 3 at.-% chromium has been investigated in the strain rate range 10-5-10-2 s-1 at test temperatures between 700 and 900°C. The composition of the iron aluminide was Fe–28Al–3Cr (at.-%) with additions of titanium and carbon. After thermomechanical processing the material possessed a coarse grained microstructure with an average grain size of 55 ± 10 μm. Strain rate exponents of 0·33≤m≤0.42 were recorded at strain rates of approximately 10-5-10-3 s-1 in the temperature range 750-900°C. Superplastic elongations of 350% and more were achieved. From thermal activation analysis of superplastic flow, an activation energy of 185 ± 10 kJ mol-1 was derived. This value is comparable to activation energies of superplastic flow in Fe3Al(Ti) alloys. However, in unalloyed Fe3Al the activation energy is higher, ~ 263 kJ mol-1. Optical microscopy showed grain refinement to ~ 30 ± 5 μm in size in superplastically strained tensile specimens. Transmission electron microscopy gave evidence of the formation of subgrains of 0·3–0·5 μm in size. Superplasticity in this iron aluminide is mainly attributed to viscous dislocation glide, controlled by solute drag in the transformed B2 lattice at the deformation temperatures. During superplastic deformation, subgrain formation and grain refinement in the gauge length were revealed. From this it is concluded that dynamic recrystallisation makes an important contribution to the deformation mechanism of superplastic flow in this material.  相似文献

Abstract

For superplastic forming of aluminium to break out of the niche market that it currently occupies, alloys will be required to possess a higher strain rate capability, appropriate in service properties, and a significantly lower price and to be capable of volume production. This paper describes an approach that has been developed in an attempt to address these fundamental requirements. A series of Al–Mg–Zr alloys with increasing levels of zirconium (0–1 wt-%)has been prepared via extrusion consolidation of cast particulate (solidification rate ~103 K s-1). The superplastic properties of the resultant cold rolled sheet have been evaluated as a function of thermomechanical treatment and zirconium addition. It has been found that increasing the level of zirconium has the twofold effect of improving the superplastic properties of the alloy while significantly decreasing the concomitant flow stress. At present the optimum superplastic behaviour has been obtained at strain rates of 10-2 s-1, with the 1%Zr material exhibiting ductilities in excess of 600%. The manufacturing route produces a bimodal distribution of Al3Zr comprising >1 µm primary particles in combination with nanoscale solid state precipitates. The current postulation is that this high strain rate superplasticity is conferred by a combination of particle stimulated and strain induced recrystallisation.  相似文献

Grain size of the ZK60 alloy was effectively reduced to 12 μm through high-ratio differential speed rolling (HRDSR) for a thickness reduction of 70% in a single pass. Due to the strengthening effects of grain boundaries and particles, the HRDSR processed ZK60 exhibited a high tensile strength of 340 MPa. Low temperature superplasticity was attained at 473–493 K at low strain rates (5 × 10−4 s−1) and high strain rate superplasticity was attained at 523–553 K at high strain rates (10−2 s−1). The optimum superplastic temperature was found to be 553 K where a maximum tensile elongation of 1000% was obtained at 1 × 10−3 s−1. The deformation behavior of the HRDSR processed ZK60 at elevated temperatures could be depicted by considering contribution of grain boundary sliding and slip creep to total plastic flow. Difference in superplastic deformation behavior between the HRDSR processed and equal channel angular press processed ZK60 alloys was examined and discussed.  相似文献

This paper describes and compares the superplastic behaviour and microstructural evolution of twin roll cast AZ91 and WE43 rolled sheet alloys. Tests were carried out in uniaxial tension on both alloys across a range of temperatures (300 °C–525 °C) and strain rates (1?10‐4 s‐1–1?10‐1 s‐1). In the case of WE43 gas bulge testing was employed at 400 °C and 0.6 MPa to offer a better analogy to superplastic forming than uniaxial tensile testing. Elongations of over 400 % were observed within WE43 when tested at 450 °C and 1?10‐3 s‐1 strain rate, and over 200 % within AZ91 when tested at 350 °C and 1?10‐3 s‐1 strain rate. A peak cone height of 41 mm was achieved with WE43 at a temperature of 400 °C and pressure of 0.6 MPa. Electron back scattered detection technique was employed to analyse the microstructural evolution of the two alloys during the forming process. Both WE43 and AZ91 were observed to undergo dynamic recrystallization during elevated temperature tensile testing and failed at low strain rates mainly by means of coalescence of cavitation, in the case of AZ91 at high strain rates cracking of Al12Mg17 intermetallic particles was the dominating failure mechanism. Both alloys were seen to achieve good levels of superplastic ductility over 200 % elongation, which would be industrially useful in niche vehicle and aerospace manufacturing.  相似文献

High-strain-rate superplasticity in oxide ceramics   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Factors limiting the strain rate of superplastic deformation in ceramic materials are discussed on the basis of existing models and experimental results concerning high-temperature plastic deformation, intergranular cavitation and dynamic grain growth. From the discussion, it is indicated that simultaneously fulfilling the following conditions is essential for attaining high-strain-rate superplasticity (HSRS) in ceramic materials: reduction in the initial grain size, enhanced diffusivity, suppressed dynamic grain growth, a homogeneous microstructure and a reduced number of residual defects. In the light of these conditions, explanations are given for HSRS attained in earlier studies on some oxide materials. It is also shown that HSRS can be intentionally attained in doped yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) and composites synthesized from ZrO2, Al2O3 and MgO2; the tensile ductility of these composites reached 300–2500% at a strain rate of 0.01–1.0 s−1. The postdeformation microstructure indicates that some secondary phases may suppress cavitation damage and thereby enhance HSRS.  相似文献

Superplasticity of the TiNp/2014AI composite prepared by powder metallurgy method was investigated by tensile tests conducted at different temperatures (773, 798, 818 and 838 K) with different strain rates range from 1·7×10° to 1·7×10?3s?1. Results show that a maximum elongation of 351% is achieved at 818 K and 3·3·10?1s?1. At different deformation temperatures, the curves of m value can be divided into two stages with the variation of strain rate and the critical strain rate is 10?1 s?1. Superplastic deformation activation energy in the TiNp/2014AI composite is 417 kJ mol?1, which is related to liquid phase formation at triple points of grain boundaries and interfaces between the matrix and the reinforcement. Superplastic deformation mechanism of the TiNp/2014AI composite is grain boundary sliding accommodate mechanism when the strain rate is lower than 10?1 s?1, and transfers to grain boundary sliding accommodation mechanism plus liquid phase helper accommodation mechanism when the strain rate is higher than 10?1 s?1  相似文献

Abstract

Tensile specimens of superplastic forming grade IN718 superalloy, containing banded microstructure in the as received state, were deformed at high temperatures T to investigate the stress σ versus strain rate ? · behaviour, the nature of the stress versus strain ? curves, ductility, and microstructure upon failure. The log σ–log ? · plot for the ? · range ~5 × 10-6–3 × 10-2 s-1 at T = 1173–1248 K exhibited a strain rate sensitivity index m = 0·62 at low strain rates and m = 0·26 at high strain rates, representing region II and III behaviour, respectively. The activation energies were estimated to be 308 and 353 kJ mol-1, respectively. All the σ–? curves, obtained at ? · = 1 × 10-4 s-1 for the temperature range 1173–1273 K, and at T = 1198 K for the strain rate range 1 × 10-4–1 × 10-2 s-1, exhibited initial flow hardening, followed by flow softening. The microstructures revealed dynamic recrystallisation, grain growth, cavitation, and a variation in the amount of second phase particles. Grain growth and cavitation were found to increase with temperature in region II. Excessive grain growth at 1273 K led to the elimination of region II. Grain growth and cavitation were both found to be less pronounced as the strain rate increased in region III.  相似文献

The superplasticity is the capability of some metallic materials to exhibit very highly tensile elongation before failure. The superplastic tensile tests were carried out at various deformation conditions in this paper to investigate the superplastic behaviors and microstructure evolution of TC11 titanium alloy. The results indicate that the smaller the grain size, the better the superplasticity is, and the wider the superplastic temperature and strain rate is, in which the superplastic temperature is ranging from 1023 to 1223 K and the strain rate is ranging from 4.4 × 10?5 to 1.1 × 10?2 s?1. The maximum tensile elongation is 1260% at the optimum deformation conditions (1173 K and 2.2 × 10?4 s?1). For further enhancing the superplasticity of TC11 titanium alloy, the novel tensile method of maximum m superplastic deformation is adopted in the paper. Compared with the conventional tensile methods, the excellent superplasticity of TC11 titanium alloy has been found with its maximum elongation of 2300%.  相似文献
