OAO Uralmashzavod offers comprehensive services to sinter producers, including the manufacture and supply of equipment, the development of technology and control systems, and maintenance contracts.     

Introduction of new products at OAO MMK-Metiz

Improvement in the production technology for hot-rolled strip supplied by OAO MMK to OAO MMK-Metiz is described. New products at OAO MMK-Metiz are based on specially developed steel grades.     

Heat-storing screens for broad-strip hot-rolling mills

Heat-trapping systems to moderate the cooling of components on the intermediate roller conveyer of broad-strip hot-rolling mills are considered. In terms of performance, Encomech panels are compared with Russian screens at the 2000 mills of OAO NLMK, OAO Severstal’, and OAO MMK, and also at the 1700 mill of PAO MMK im. Il’icha (Ukraine). Significant benefits of the Russian systems are noted.     

Multipoint thermal-probe monitoring the radial gas distribution in blast furnaces with nonconical charging systems at OAO MMK

Uncooled multipoint thermal probes are used to monitor the radial gas distribution in blast furnaces with nonconical charging systems at OAO MMK. In each furnace two probes are placed at fixed locations above the charge. Such probes have been installed in all four furnaces with nonconical charging systems at OAO MMK and are now in an operational state.     

Influence of preliminary batch reduction on blast-furnace smelting

A multizone model of smelting developed at the Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy for blast furnace 9 at OAO ArcelorMittal Krivoi Rog and furnace 5 at OAO Severstal’ is used to analyze smelting with variation in the content of reduced iron in the batch and the batch distribution over the furnace radius. New results are obtained.     

Modernizing the pipe-electrowelding shop at OAO VTZ

The range of large-diameter pipe produced at OAO VTZ has been expanded, with increase in the wall thickness and the introduction of higher strength classes. A new production department for the manufacture of straight-seam pipe has been introduced at OAO VTZ; this pipe is intended for use in pipelines. A state-of-the-art production technology for high-quality pipe has been adopted, so as to comply with the highest current requirements.     

Production of auto-body dual-phase steel with single-step cooling on the output conveyer of the 2000 continuous broad-strip mill at OAO NLMK

The goal is to produce hot-rolled dual-phase steel of strength class DP 450–600 at OAO Novolipetskii Metallurgicheskii Kombinat (NLMK). The steel’s final structure and properties is greatly affected by single-stage strip cooling on the output roller conveyer of the 2000 continuous broad-strip mill. The influence of the hot-rolling parameters on the structure and mechanical properties of the hot-rolled SPRC440R steel from which cold-rolled dual-phase steel is produced at OAO NLMK is studied in the laboratory. The temperatures and rates for accelerated cooling on the output roller conveyer of the 2000 continuous broad-strip mill at OAO NLMK are calculated by means of a mathematical model. The laboratory data and simulation results are used in developing trial conditions for industrial rolling. Recommendations are made regarding the production of hot-rolled dual-phase steel corresponding to strength class DP 450–600.     

Reduced iron powder: Manufacturing problems and prospects

The range of raw materials that may be used in the production of reduced iron powder is severely constricted by the strict requirements on its chemical composition and properties. Industrial tests at OAOAvtoVAZ have shown that optimal performance is obtained for iron powder produced from granulated iron oxides supplied by OAO NLMK and also from rolled scale supplied by Il’ich Mariupol Metallurgical Works. Industrial production of reduced iron powder at OAO NLMK is proposed.     

Spinel and carbide formation in oxide-carbon refractories for steel-casting ladles

In the converter shop at OAO Nizhnetagil’skii Metallurgicheskii Kombinat (NTMK), the steel-casting ladle is lined with oxide-carbon refractories. The aggressiveness of slags toward the refractory lining is explained. The composition of the linings is studied, along with the processes within the refractories at high temperatures. The basic requirements on refractory components supplied to OAO NTMK are formulated. The life of casting-ladle linings in the converter shop is increased.     

Work of deformation in screw rolling

A method is proposed for determining the unit work of deformation in the broaching of blanks in two-roller screw-rolling mills. A new approach is outlined for assessing the fracture risk and the structure of continuous-cast circular billet. Methods for determining the work of deformation in different sections of the deformation zone are considered. The distribution of the work of deformation due to reduction over the whole deformation zone is determined. The influence of extension on the work of deformation is assessed for similar rolling mills at OAO Pervoural’skii Novotrubnyi Zavod and OAO Yuzhnotrubnyi Zavod.     

Large-diameter gas pipe produced at OAO Volzhskii Trubnyi Zavod

The production of new helical- and straight-seam pipe (diameter 1420 mm) for working pressures of 9.8 and 11.8 MPa (strength categories K60 and K65, respectively) has been introduced at OAO Volzhskii Trubnyi Zavod. High-quality thick sheet with limited carbon and sulfur content is used for pipe production. Shaping, welding, and expansion processes have been introduced. Pipe performance is investigated. On the basis of the results, the new pipe may be recommended for the current OAO Gazprom projects (the Northern-European gas pipeline and the Bovanenkovo-Ukhta gas pipeline).     

Factors that influence <Emphasis Type="Italic">CSR</Emphasis> and <Emphasis Type="Italic">CRI</Emphasis>

The influence of various factors on CSR and CRI in the production of metallurgical coke at OAO MMK is evaluated.     

Maintenance of metallurgical equipment

Improvement in the reliability of welding equipment at OAO Izhstal’ on the basis of engineering diagnostics and scheduled maintenance is considered.     

Degassing metal in a circulatory vacuum-treatment unit

High efficiency has been achieved in degassing steel at OAO Oskol’skii Elektrometallurgicheskii Kombinat, thanks to the introduction of circulatory vacuum-treatment units.     

Improving the durability and reliability of vacuum-chamber linings

Several practical methods of improving the durability of vacuum-chamber linings in the converter shop at OAO Nizhnetagil’skii Metallurgicheskii Kombinat are considered.     

Production of thin sheet for shipbuilding

The production of thick NV D36 steel sheet according to DNV requirements has been introduced in sheet-rolling shop 9 at OAO Magnitogorskii Metallurgicheskii Kombinat.     

Modernizing curvilinear continuous-casting machines with a vertical section

Various designs of continuous-casting machines installed at OAO MMK are considered. Steel casting is analyzed as a function of the casting-machine design.     

Sinter at Cherepovets Metallurgical Works (basicity 1.0–3.0)

The strength and mineral composition of sinter (basicity 1.0–3.0) is studied for Cherepovets Metallurgical Works (OAO Severstal’).     

Correlation between the characteristics of blast-furnace coke

The correlation between the characteristics of coke is considered for the example of test data from OAO Tulachermet. A new characteristic is proposed.     

Improving the accelerated cooling of rolled steel

The basic stages in improving the accelerated cooling of rolled steel are considered for the 350 small- and medium-bar mill in bar-rolling shop 2 at OAO Oskol’skii Elektrometallurgicheskii Kombinat.
