The diffraction efficiency of a grating coupler having a surface-relief grating is calculated by the use of coupled-wave theory. The grating couplers are fabricated to examine the validity of the calculated result. The dependence of the measured diffraction efficiency on the groove depth of the grating coupler agrees well with the calculated results. The array illuminator, which emits 10 and 20 beams with equal intensity, is designed and fabricated through the use of these numerical results. The uniformity error of the output beam caused by the error of the diffraction efficiency is also discussed.  相似文献

The properties of a laser beam coupled out of a standard unstable laser resonator are heavily dependent on the chosen resonator magnification. A higher magnification results in a higher output coupling and a better beam quality. But in some configurations, an unstable resonator with a low output coupling in combination with a good beam quality is desirable. In order to reduce the output coupling for a particular resonator, magnification fractions of the outcoupled radiation are reflected back into the cavity. In the confocal case, the output mirror consists of a spherical inner section with a high reflectivity and a flat outer section with a partial reflectivity coating. With the application of the unstable resonator with reduced output coupling (URROC), magnification and output coupling can be adjusted independently from each other and it is possible to get a good beam quality and a high power extraction for lasers with a large low gain medium. The feasibility of this resonator design is examined numerically and experimentally with the help of a chemical oxygen iodine laser.  相似文献

Both a nonfocusing and a focusing preferential-order volume grating waveguide coupler were designed, fabricated, and tested. These volume grating couplers are designed to outcouple a 633-nm wave guided in an adjacent polyimide waveguide film. The slanted-fringe volume gratings are recorded holographically by the interference of two 364-nm waves. The dynamics of the holographic photopolymer HRF600X001 are investigated in relation to the interaction with the guided wave. The fabricated couplers exhibited a preferential coupling of 98%, a spatial coupling rate of 3.6 mm(-1), and a coupling efficiency of 95%. The focusing grating coupler focused the outcoupled beam to a focal line with a full width at half-maximum of 10.49 mum located 25 mm above the grating.  相似文献

Bragg gratings used as input-output couplers in polymeric waveguides have been demonstrated at infrared wavelengths. These Bragg grating couplers were holographically formed volume phase gratings with a near-45 degrees fringe slant angle embedded directly into a waveguide layer. A photopolymer was used for both producing a planar waveguide and constructing the embedded Bragg grating coupler. A coupling efficiency of 23% for input and 5% for output has been achieved at 850 nm. The output-coupling beam profiles are also discussed.  相似文献

The coupling efficiency of grating couplers is derived for a Gaussian incident beam. Its optimum value depends on the beam waist and on the position of a light spot with respect to the coupler edge for given grating parameters. The characteristic coupling length has been experimentally determined for the grating coupler studied. Relative measurements of the coupling efficiency as a function of incident beam characteristics are in good agreement with the numerical results.  相似文献

The performance of a flash-lamp-pumped Cr:LiSAF unstable laser resonator utilizing a fourth-order super-Gaussian variable reflectivity mirror as an output coupler is described. The super-Gaussian mirror results in a smooth, flattop transverse beam profile in the near field that is advantageous for nonlinear frequency-conversion applications. Long-pulse and Q-switched operation of the Cr:LiSAF unstable laser resonator are described and compared with stable resonator operation. We obtained tunable ultraviolet radiation extending from 267 to 290 nm by frequency mixing theQ-switched Cr:LiSAF laser output with lithium triborate and beta-barium borate nonlinear crystals.  相似文献

A novel focusing waveguide grating coupler comprising an integrated uniform grating coupler and binary-phase-only diffractive lens is proposed, designed, and fabricated. Experimental results are also presented to demonstrate the device performance. This device is in direct competition with single-element focusing grating couplers defined by direct-write electron-beam lithography and its structure is attractive because the fabrication procedure is better suited for mass production.  相似文献

A rigorous analysis of the unstable Bessel resonator with convex output coupler is presented. The Huygens-Fresnel self-consistency equation is solved to extract the first eigenmodes and eigenvalues of the cavity, taking into account the finite apertures of the mirrors. Attention was directed to the dependence of the output transverse profiles; the losses; and the modal-frequency changes on the curvature of the output coupler, the cavity length, and the angle of the axicon. Our analysis revealed that while the stable Bessel resonator retains a Gaussian radial modulation on the Bessel rings, the unstable configuration exhibits a more uniform amplitude modulation that produces output profiles more similar to ideal Bessel beams. The unstable cavity also possesses higher-mode discrimination in favor of the fundamental mode than does the stable configuration.  相似文献

This article presents the fundamental principles of operational performance of a continuous wave (cw) thin-disk laser with multiple disks in one resonator. Based on the model of an end-pumped Yb:YAG thin-disk laser with nonuniform temperature distribution, the effect of the multiple disks in one resonator is considered. The analytic expressions are derived to analyze the laser output intensity, laser intensity in the resonator, threshold intensity, and the optical efficiency of a thin-disk laser with multiple disks arranged in series. The dependence of output coupler reflectivity and the number of thin disks on various parameters are investigated, which are useful to determine the optimal output coupler reflectivity of the thin-disk lasers and control the laser intensity in the resonator.  相似文献

谐振腔内像差对光束质量的影响十分明显,直接导致激光器的输出功率及光束质量的下降。对理想状态以及受相位倾斜、像散像差扰动后的正支共焦非稳腔进行了数值模拟分析。计算机仿真结果表明,采用数值迭代分析法可以很好地对正支共焦非稳腔的模式特性进行研究,从而为自动调腔或采用自适应光学技术对谐振腔内像差进行自动补偿提供了理论基础。  相似文献

Various types of surface-emitting semiconductor lasers are reviewed along with their anticipated applications. The recent progress in grating-coupled surface-emitting (GSE) lasers is particularly emphasized. SuchGSE arrays have operated continuously to more than 3 W and pulsed to more than 30 W. They have obtainedCW threshold current densities of under 140 A/cm2 withCW differential quantum efficiencies of 20 to 40% per surface. Linewidths in the 40 MHz range have been obtained with output powers of 100 to 250 mW. The arrays typically consist of 10–30 mutually injection-coupled gain sections with 10 laterally coupled ridge-guided lasers in each gain section. A single GaInAs strained-layer quantum well with a graded index separate confinement heterostructure geometry allows junction down mounting with light emission through the transparent GaAs substrate. A surface relief grating is used for feedback and outcoupling.  相似文献

A new type of unstable resonator, suitable for a laser with a large medium cross section and a small or median output coupling, is presented. The resonator configuration, a modification of a negative-branch confocal unstable resonator, is numerically investigated. The basis of the theory is the Fresnel-Kirchhoff integral equation, and the calculations describe a passive resonator. With respect to output mirror tilting, the calculations confirm that the modified negative-branch confocal unstable resonator is less sensitive to mirror misalignments than the conventional negative-branch confocal unstable resonator. Furthermore, the modified resonator improves the beam quality in comparison with the conventional unstable resonator.  相似文献

An integrated-optic device, constructed by stacking two types of grating coupler in a two-story structure of waveguides, is proposed for sensing angular displacement of spindle rotation. In the first story a guided wave is diffracted by a grating coupler and becomes a sensing beam. The sensing beam is reflected by a mirror with a quarter-wave plate attached to a spindle head and is coupled back into the second story by another grating coupler. We measured the rotary displacement of the spindle by detecting variation of polarization direction of the reflected beam. A prototype device has been designed and fabricated, and the operation principle is experimentally confirmed.  相似文献

We report a large mode volume unstable resonator working at 100?Hz. The resonator is combined with a variable reflectivity convex mirror and a high-reflective convex mirror. The cavity mirrors are used to compensate for the thermal lensing effect of the two Nd:YAG laser rods, which are pumped by high-energy high-repetition-rate diode lasers. A 90° quartz rotator is placed between the two laser rods to compensate for the thermal depolarization. In the experiment, output of as high as 388?mJ is obtained at 100?Hz with slope efficiency of 36%. The pulse width is 15?ns, and the beam quality factor is M(x)(2)=3.2, M(y)(2)=2.8.  相似文献

We present the numerical and experimental study that we carried out to compare the performances of two hybrid stable-unstable resonators for diffusion-cooled CO(2) slab lasers. The two resonators are designed to fit a 320 mm × 60 mm ×2 mm rf-discharge channel and are both guided in the narrow transverse direction. They differ in the other transverse direction, consisting of a positive- or a negative-branch unstable resonator scheme. The two solutions have been characterized in terms of modal structure, power extraction, stability, and quality of the extracted beam.  相似文献

Abstract

A comparison is made between the output characteristics of type 1 optical fibre ring resonators with a different type of 3 × 3 fibre coupler, that is a planar or a nonplanar coupler. Three different nonplanar couplers are formed when the central fibre 1 of a loosely coupled planar 3 × 3 fibre coupler is displaced normally from the common plane. Such a 3 × 3 fibre coupler can be identified by the value of its relative coupling ratio m 3. The dependence of the output intensities of the ring resonator on the coupling length kd and the relative coupling ratio m 3 of the 3 × 3 fibre coupler is investigated. The former dependence can be used as a guide to obtain suitable output characteristics of a fibre ring resonator for a specific application, while the latter can be used to choose the right type of 3 × 3 fibre coupler to build a fibre ring resonator. It is found that the output characteristics of a fibre ring resonator with a 3 × 3 planar (m 3 = 0) or an equilateral triangular (m 3 = 1) fibre coupler are usually better than those of the others.  相似文献

This paper describes the use and advantages of metallic strip gratings on dielectric substrates as output couplers for both optically pumped and discharge-excited submillimeter lasers. Formulas are presented for the calculation of transmittance and loss of such couplers, taking account of loss in the strip grating as well as loss and multiple reflections in the substrate. Included are expressions for the phase shifts on reflection and transmission by an arbitrary lossy grid on a plane boundary between two dielectrics according to a transmission-line model that is applicable for wavelengths in both dielectrics longer than the grid period. In relation to these phase shifts attention is drawn to an important sign convention. The theory is shown to agree well with measured transmittance of a typical device between 500 and 1600 GHz as well as spot measurements at 891 (337-microm HCN laser), 1540, and 1578 GHz (195- and 190-microm DCN laser). Finally, the theory is used to design a low-loss coupler for the low-gain 119-microm line of discharge excited H2O.  相似文献

We analyze the polarization-dependent performance and the loss performance of volume grating couplers using a leaky-mode approach in conjunction with rigorous coupled-wave analysis for two configurations: the volume grating in the cover layer and the volume grating in the waveguide. The angular dependence of TE and TM polarization coupling efficiency is studied, and designs for polarization-dependent and polarization-independent couplers are presented for both configurations. Polarization-dependent couplers are obtained with an outcoupling angle close to normal. Polarization-independent couplers are obtained with outcoupling angles away from normal, 46.7 deg in the case of a volume grating in the cover layer and 54.4 deg in the case of a volume grating in the waveguide. The effect of loss on coupler performance is also analyzed. It is found that, for cases of practical importance, the effect of lossy coupler materials is small. The estimated loss for a commercially available material is 5 dB/cm. For TE-polarized light and the volume grating in the waveguide, a loss of this magnitude reduces the coupling efficiency by less than 3%, whereas in the case of the volume grating in the cover layer, it reduces the coupling efficiency by less than 0.3%.  相似文献

A modified negative branch confocal unstable resonator (MNBUR) was coupled to the chemical oxygen-iodine laser (COIL) device of the German Aerospace Center. It consists of two spherical mirrors and a rectangular scraper for power extraction. Experimentally measured distributions of the near- and far-field intensities and the near-field phase were found in close agreement to numerical calculations. The extracted power came up to approximately 90% of the power as expected for a stable resonator coupled to the same volume of the active medium. The output power revealed a considerable insensitivity towards tilts of the resonator mirrors and the ideal arrangement of the scraper was found to be straightforward by monitoring the near-field distributions of intensity and phase. The beam quality achieved with the MNBUR of an extremely low magnification of only 1.04 was rather poor but nevertheless in accordance with theory. The demonstrated consistency between theory and experiment makes the MNBUR an attractive candidate for lasers that allow for higher magnification. In particular, it promises high brilliance in application to 100 kW class COIL devices, superior to the conventional negative branch confocal unstable resonator.  相似文献

Input grating couplers are used to couple light from free space into a waveguide and can provide additional functions such as focusing and beam splitting of the light into arbitrary desired positions in the waveguide. We show that it is possible to design the couplers so that they perform different desired functions depending on the polarization or wavelength of the incident light. We demonstrate experimentally a number of couplers that may be of interest, e.g., in optical fiber communications. Examples are polarization-independent couplers, designed to have the same response for two orthogonal polarizations of the incident light, and couplers for demultiplexing in wavelength division multiplexing applications, designed to separate and focus different input wavelengths to different positions in the waveguide.  相似文献
