The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX), and mixture of tetracycline, citric acid, and detergent (MTAD) solutions on the surfaces of nickel titanium (NiTi) rotary files with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Irrigation solutions including 2.5% NaOCl, 5% NaOCl, 2% CHX, and MTAD were used. Four new ProTaper rotary NiTi files (F3) were immersed in each four irrigation solutions for 10 min, separately. One untreated NiTi file was used as a control specimen. The surface analysis was performed with SEM and AFM. The surface analysis in AFM was performed on 12 different regions located between first and second millimeters from the tip. SEM images were taken with different magnifications. No surface alteration was recorded under SEM evaluation. AFM revealed that the root mean square (RMS) values of all treated specimens were statistically higher than the control sample (P < 0.05). The sample which was treated with CHX showed lowest RMS values in test groups. All tested solutions caused surface alterations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare cleaning effectiveness of TwistedFile, GT series X, Revo‐S, RaCe, Mtwo, and ProTaper Universal rotary files in curved canals. Seventy mesiobuccal canals of extracted human first maxillary molars were divided into seven groups of 10 samples each. Canals were prepared with six nickel–titanium (NiTi) rotary systems and manual K‐Flexofile. Irrigation was performed with 2 mL 2.5% NaOCl solution after each file, and 5 mL 2.5% NaOCl was used for the final flush. After the roots were split longitudinally, the presence of debris and smear layer was visualized using scanning electron microscopic photomicrographs taken at coronal, middle, and apical third. Mean scores for debris and the smear layer were calculated and statistically analyzed for significance between groups using the Kruskal–Wallis nonparametric analysis of variance (P < 0.05) and Mann–Whitney U test (P < 0.001). There was no significant difference among the groups in terms of debris and smear layer scores (P > 0.05). Without considering the preparation method used, while no statistically significant difference was found between the coronal third and the middle third (P > 0.05), higher amount of debris and smear layer were found in apical third (P = 0.001). The new generation of NiTi rotary files including the Twisted File and GT Series X presented similar cleaning effectiveness compared with traditionally ground NiTi rotary files. Microsc. Res. The aim was to examine the effect of retreatment process on the surface roughness and nickel titanium (NiTi) composition of ProTaper Universal Retreatment (PTUR; consists of 3 files; D1, D2, D3) and WaveOne Gold (WOG) (primary) instruments. Twenty extracted mandibular molar teeth with severe curved (30–40°) mesial roots were selected and divided into two groups (n = 10) based on the instrument used for the removal of the root canal filling. Before and after using the instruments in two canals, they were subjected to atomic force microscopy (AFM) and energy dispersive X‐ray spectrophotometry (EDX) analysis. The EDX analysis data and roughness average (Ra) and root mean square (RMS) values were analyzed statistically using a one‐way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey's test at the 5% significant level. There was no significant difference between the new and used D1 and D2 PTUR and WOG instruments in terms of the Ni composition (p > .05). The Ti contents of the used D2 and D3 PTUR instruments were lower those of the new instruments (p < .05). In both new and used instruments, PTUR and WOG have no difference in terms of Ra and RMS values. (p > .05). The Ra and RMS values of the PTUR and WOG systems significantly increased after removal of the root canal filling (p < .05). The use of PTUR and WOG instruments for removal of root canal filling in severely curved root canals affected the surface topography of the files. The NiTi composition of the WOG instruments was unaffected by the retreatment process.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to compare the cyclic fatigue resistance of rotary NiTi files, produced with four different manufacturing methods on specially designed dynamic models that simulated clinical conditions. In this study, 120 files, consisting of 30 files for Typhoon, ProTaper Next, RaCe, and Twisted Files nickel titanium rotary systems were used. The 30 files of each group were divided into three subgroups to be used in artificial canals with a 60° angle of curvature and radii of curvature of 2, 5, and 8 mm (n = 10). All files were rotated in the artificial canals until fracture occurred and the number of cycles to fracture was calculated. The data were analyzed using one‐ and two‐way analyses of variance and Tamhane multiple comparison tests. In all three groups, Typhoon instruments had the highest number of cycles to failure than the RaCe, ProTaper Next, and Twisted Files instruments, and the difference statistically significant (p < .05). There were no significant differences between the RaCe, ProTaper Next, and Twisted Files groups (p > .05). The CM wire Typhoon system was significantly more resistant to cyclic fatigue compared to the other file systems in all three artificial canals. When the fracture resistance of an instrument in three different artificial canals was compared, the mean NCFs decreased as the radius of the curvature of the canal decreased from 8 to 2 mm. Manufacturing method is one of the most important factors on cyclic fatigue resistance, also the radius of curvature effects the cyclic fatigue.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate three reciprocating systems and complementary cleaning methods on filling material removal during retreatment of flattened canals. Thirty‐six mandibular incisors were prepared using rotary instruments up to size 25.08 and filled using the single‐cone technique. Subsequently, the teeth were divided into three groups (n = 12) according to retreatment procedures: Reciproc Blue (RB): 25/0.08 and 40/0.06; ProDesign R (PDR): 25/0.06 and 35/0.05; and WaveOne Gold (WOG): 25/0.07 and 35/0.06. The remaining filling volume materials were assessed by means of micro‐CT imaging before and after retreatment. After this, the specimens were subdivided into three groups according to complementary cleaning methods: XP‐Endo Shaper (30/0.01); passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI); 60° oscillatory instrumentation with #30 H‐file, and micro‐CT scan was taken. Then, the roots were cut in half and the samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The data were analyzed statistically using Kruskal–Wallis and Dunn's Multiple Comparison test with significance level of 5%. None of the reciprocating files promoted complete removal of filling material and there was no statistical difference between the groups, regardless instrument size (p > 0.05). Complementary cleaning methods increased remnant filling removal (p < 0.05). XP‐endo Shaper significantly reduced the amount of filling material in the apical and middle thirds, compared with H‐files (p < 0.05), with no difference with PUI. In the SEM, there was no statistical difference among the instruments (p > 0.05). The reciprocating systems showed similar effectiveness in removing root filling material. Aim: To evaluate the surface topography changes in three nickel‐titanium (NiTi) file systems using either rotary or reciprocal motion using atomic force microscopy (AFM), and to determine the effect of scanning area on the AFM results in this study. Methodology: Five points on a F2 Protaper file, R25 Reciproc file, and a Primary file from WaveOne systems were scanned preoperatively in 1 × 1 and 5 × 5 µm2 with an AFM device that can scan an intact (not sectioned) file. One standardized resin block was used for each instrument, according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Points were re‐scanned postoperatively using the same AFM and settings. Root‐mean‐square (RMS) and roughness average (Ra) values were obtained. The preoperative and postoperative surface topographies were compared separately in terms of RMS and Ra values. The surface topography change scores were analyzed using Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney U tests using a 0.10 significance level. Results: There were no significant differences preoperatively among the NiTi file systems in 1 × 1 or 5 × 5 µm2 areas. Postoperatively, the WaveOne Primary had more surface irregularities (significant for 5 × 5 µm2 scan in Ra evaluation). Conclusions: Three‐dimensional AFM images of instrument surfaces showed topographic irregularities preoperatively and postoperatively. AFM results differ depending on the scanning area and file used. The single‐file root canal instrumentation technique using reciprocating motion has been gaining concern. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the shaping ability of single ProTaper F2 file and WaveOne Primary file when they were used in the curved root canal with reciprocation motion and to investigate the durability of the file after use with a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Changes in structure model index (SMI), root canal volume, curvature, surface area, and degree of transportation were measured from the cross‐sectional images of the prepared canals using the micro‐CT system with an isotropic resolution of 16 μm. Results showed that there were no differences in the changes of root canal volume, surface area, and SMI between the two file groups after the preparation (p > 0.05). The ProTaper group showed a curvature straightening value of 25.45 ± 12.51%, while the WaveOne group showed 27.30 ± 10.91%, and there was no statistically significant difference (p > 0.05). The transportation values between the two groups showed no significant differences (p > 0.05). SEM revealed that 60% of ProTaper files showed initiation of microcracks on the surface while those were detected on the only one WaveOne file. The single‐file technique using either WaveOne Primary or ProTaper F2 can be safely used under each reciprocating motion without creating an increased apical transportation in curved canals. The aim of the study was to assess the penetrability of two endodontic sealers (AH Plus and MTA Fillapex) into dentinal tubules, submitted to endodontic treatment and subsequently to endodontic retreatment. Thirty ex vivo incisors were prepared using ProTaper rotary system up to F3 instrument and divided in three groups according to the endodontic sealer used for root canal filling: AH Plus (AHP), MTA Fillapex (MTAF), and control group (CG) without using EDTA previously to the root canal filling. Rhodamine B dye (red) was incorporated to the sealers in order to provide the fluorescence which will enable confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) assessment. All specimens were filled with gutta‐percha cones using the lateral compaction technique. The specimens were submitted to endodontic retreatment using ProTaper Retreatment system, re‐prepared up to F5 instruments and filled with gutta‐percha cones and the same sealer used during endodontic retreatment. Fluorescein dye (green) was incorporated to the sealer in order to distinguish from the first filling. The roots were sectioned 2 mm from the apex and assessed by CLSM. No difference was found between the two experimental groups (P > 0.05). On the other hand, in the control group the sealers were not capable to penetrate into dentinal tubules after endodontic treatment (P > 0.05). In retreatment cases, none of the sealers were able to penetrate into dentin tubules. It can be concluded that sealer penetrability is high during endodontic treatment. Root canal preparation may damage NiTi instruments resulting in wear and deformation. The aim of this study was to make a comparative evaluation of the surface topography of the cervical third of four different rotary systems, before and after being used twelve times, in 1.440 resin blocks with simulated root canals with standardized 45° curvatures, and analyzed by atomic force microscopy &#150; AFM. The blocks were divided into four groups and prepared according to the manufacturers recommendations: Group 1 ‐ K3®; Group 2 ‐ Protaper Universal®; Group 3 ‐ Twisted Files® and Group 4 ‐ Biorace®. After each preparation, the instruments were washed and autoclaved. A total of 240 instruments were selected, being 30 new instruments and 30 after having been used for the 12th time, from each group. These instruments were analyzed by AFM and for quantitative evaluation, the mean RMS (Root mean square) values of the cervical third of the specimens from the four groups were used. The result showed that all the rotary files used for the 12th time suffered wear with change in the topography of the cervical region of the active portion of the file (ANOVA p < 0.01). Classifying the specimens in increasing order, from the least to the greatest wear suffered, Group 3 (2.8993 nm) presented the least wear, followed by Group 4 (12.2520 nm), Group 1 (36.0043 nm) and lastly, Group 2 (59.8750 nm) with the largest amount of cervical surface wear. Root canal preparation is the most important phase of endodontic procedure and it consists of adequate canal space cleaning and shaping. In recent years, rotary instruments and techniques have gained importance because of the great efficacy, speed, and safety of the preparation procedure. AIM: The aim of this research was to investigate measurement of maximal and minimal residual dentine thickness (RDT) and canal diameter after the canal preparation with different NiTi rotary files. METHODS: The research has been conducted on extracted human teeth in vitro conditions. The teeth have been divided in seven groups (20 teeth per group) depending on the kind of instruments used for root canal preparation: ProTaper, GT, ProFile, K‐3, FlexMaster, hand ProTaper, and hand GT. The canals have been shaped in a crown‐down manner and irrigated with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite. The roots of the teeth have been cut 1 and 3 mm from the apex. Apical preparation quality has been assessed under the polarized light microscope. RESULTS: The maximal residual dentine thickness at distance 1 mm from apex, ranged from 1.16 to 1.45 mm, and at distance 3 mm from apex, from 1.44 to 1.84 mm. The minimal dentine thickness at distance 1 mm from apex ranged from 0.52 to 0.73 mm, and at distance 3 mm from apex, from 0.66 to 0.83 mm. The canal diameters after preparation at distance 1 mm from apex ranged from 0.42 to 0.49 mm, and at distance 3 mm from apex, from 0.53 to 0.63 mm. CONCLUSIONS: There was no significant difference neither in maximal and minimal RDT, nor in canal diameters shaped with different NiTi instruments tested. This study assessed the influence of different endodontic chemical substances on the adhesion of the Epiphany SE/Resilon system (with and without resinous solvent) to radicular dentin walls, using the push‐out test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Forty‐eight root canals of human canines were prepared biomechanically with ProTaper rotary files (crown‐down technique) and the radicular dentin was treated with either 17% EDTA, 2% chlorhexidine gel (CHX) or 2.5% NaOCl (control). The root canals were filled with Resilon cones and Epiphany SE sealer with and without resinous solvent. Six groups of eight canals each had their roots sectioned transversally to obtain 1‐mm thick slices. Data were subjected to statistical analysis by ANOVA and Tukey's tests. The specimens treated with 17% EDTA (1.59 ± 0.91) presented higher bond strength (P < 0.05) than those treated with 2.5% NaOCl (0.93 ± 0.27) and 2% CHX (0.92 ± 0.22). Significantly higher bond strength (P < 0.05) was observed when the Epiphany SE was prepared with (1.37 ± 0.78) than without (0.92 ± 0.33) solvent. Adhesive failures were predominant in all groups. SEM analysis showed greater homogeneity of the filling mass when the solvent was added to the sealer. Treatment of root canal walls with 17% EDTA, and addition of a resinous solvent to Epiphany SE produced the highest adhesion to radicular dentin. Microsc. Res. This study evaluated the mineral contents of root‐canal dentin after treatment with different irrigation activation protocols. One hundred and eight maxillary lateral incisor teeth were randomly divided into eight experimental groups and one control group. Root canals were prepared using ProTaper rotary files, with the exception of the Self‐Adjusting File (SAF) group. Canals were irrigated with 2 mL of 5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) at each instrument change, and received a final flush with 10 mL of 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and 10 mL of 5% NaOCl for 1 min. The control group was irrigated with distilled water. Group I (GI): Needle syringe irrigation; Group II (GII): NaviTip FX; Group III (GIII): CanalBrush; Group IV (GIV): Manual dynamic activation with gutta‐percha; Group V (GV): Passive ultrasonic irrigation; Group VI (GVI): EndoActivator; Group VII (GVII): EndoVac; Group VIII (GVIII): SAF. The level of elemental composition was analyzed by a scanning electron microscopy and an energy‐dispersive spectrometer (EDS) system. The results were then statistically analyzed by one‐way ANOVA and Tukey tests. Ca/P ratio was changed after treatment with SAF and EndoActivator. To evaluate the efficacy of ProTaper Universal rotary retreatment system and the influence of sealer type on the presence of filling debris in the reinstrumented canals viewed in an operative clinical microscope. Forty‐five palatal root canals of first molars were filled with gutta‐percha and one of the following sealers: G1, EndoFill; G2, AH Plus; G3, Sealapex. The canals were then reinstrumented with ProTaper Universal rotary system. Roots were longitudinally sectioned and examined under an operative clinical microscope (10×), and the amount of filling debris on canal walls was analyzed using the AutoCAD 2004 software. A single operator used a specific software tool to outline the canal area and the filling debris area in each third (cervical, middle, and apical), as well as the total canal area. Data were analyzed by Kruskal‐Wallis test and Tukey test at P < 0.05. Sealapex demonstrated significant differences in the average of filling debris area/canal among the 3 thirds. This group revealed that apical third showed more debris than the both cervical and middle third (P < 0.0001). Endofill presented significantly more filling debris than Sealapex in the cervical third (P < 0.05). In the middle (P = 0.12) and apical third (P = 0.10), there were no differences amongst groups. Debris was left in all canal thirds, regardless of the retreatment technique. The greatest differences between techniques and sealers were found in the cervical third. Microsc. Res. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), 2% chlorhexidine (CHX), and MTAD solutions on the surface of gutta‐percha and Resilon cones by using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Accessory cones were washed and dried. The cones were randomly divided into six groups: gutta‐percha immersed in NaOCl, CHX, and MTAD, and Resilon immersed in NaOCl, CHX, and MTAD. AFM images of the same area were made in different periods of time. JPK? Image Processing Software was used to evaluate the images. The parameters used to evaluate the changes were RMS and line profiles. No statistically significant change was observed in the RMS values. The line profiles detected changes only for gutta‐percha surfaces after immersion in NaOCl and MTAD solutions. In conclusion, 5.25% NaOCl and MTAD are associated with local changes in surface roughness of gutta‐percha cones. No change was observed when 2% CHX was used. Nitinol (NiTi), a nearly equiatomic nickel-titanium alloy is known for its unique shape memory and superelastic properties, which result from martensitic transformations. It is the material of choice for numerous biomedical applications such as endovascular stents, vena cava filters, dental files and guidewires for non-invasive surgery, etc. Micro-scale abrasion tests (MSATs) have been performed on the NiTi shape memory alloy, so as to evaluate the influence of different commercial abrasives such as silicon carbide, alumina and glass on the wear behaviour. The aim of the work was the selection of the most effective abrasive for cleaning the inner surface of laser-cut cardiovascular stents. Abrasive particles have been characterised by X-ray diffraction, SEM and EDS before and after MSATs. Worn surfaces have been studied by stylus profilometry, SEM and atomic force microscopy. The effect of abrasive particle hardness, size and angularity on the wear behaviour has been evaluated and discussed.  相似文献

In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of 1 and 5.25% NaOCl solutions, with or without surfactant, in disinfecting gutta‐percha cones. Surface changes of the gutta‐percha cones after disinfection were also assessed under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). One‐hundred and eight gutta‐percha cones previously contaminated with Enterococcus faecalis were left in contact for 30 s or 1 min with the following solutions (n = 12): 1% NaOCl; 1% NaOCl + 2% cetrimide; 5.25% NaOCl; 5.25% NaOCl + 2% cetrimide. Positive control group was composed by the remaining contaminated cones (n = 12), and the negative control group by noncontaminated cones (n = 12). The cones were kept in Eppendorf tubes containing Trypticase Soy Broth at 37°C for 24 hr, and then, the presence of turbidity was analyzed. Ten additional cones (n = 2) were observed under SEM to evaluate surface changes after 1 min of disinfection. The data analysis (Kruskal–Wallis test, α = 5%) demonstrated that regardless the presence of surfactant, the NaOCl solutions used were effective in the disinfection when cones were immersed for 1 min. However, at the 30‐s period, only the 5.25% NaOCl solution was effective. SEM analysis demonstrated that NaOCl solutions promoted the formation of sodium chloride crystals on cones surface, less visible when the 1% NaOCl associated to surfactant was used. The addition of surfactant did not affect the disinfection capacity of NaOCl solutions. However, the surfactant has apparently inhibited the sodium chloride crystals deposition on the cones surface when associated to 1% NaOCl solution.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the cleaning capacity of the octenidine hydrochloride (OCT) used as root canal irrigant by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. Sixty human unirradicular extracted teeth were randomly distributed in 6 groups (n = 10) according to irrigant solutions which were used during root canal preparation: G1, 0.1% OCT; G2, 2% chlorhexidine (CHX); G3, 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl); G4, OCT + 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA); G5, 2.5% NaOCl + 17% EDTA and G6, distilled water. All specimens were instrumented with ProTaper system up to F4. Teeth were sectioned and prepared for SEM. The smear layer was evaluated using a 5‐score system and the data were analyzed by Kruskal–Wallis and Dunn (α = 0.05). In all root canal thirds there was no significant difference between OCT, CHX, NaOCl, and water groups (p > .05), and these groups showed higher smear layer values than NaOCl + EDTA and OCT + EDTA groups (p < .05). There was no significant difference between NaOCl + EDTA and OCT + EDTA groups (p > .05). It was concluded that OCT used as a single root canal irrigant presented poor cleaning capacity and could be used in association with a final irrigation with EDTA to obtain smear layer removal.  相似文献

Obtaining clean and smooth root canal walls is the ideal clinical outcome of the cleaning and shaping stage in root canal treatment. This study compares the surface roughness of root canal surfaces instrumented with a NiTi filing system with either adaptive reciprocating (AR) or continuous rotation (CR). Root canal cleaning and shaping was carried out on the mesial canals of 24 extracted first molars roots with either AR or CR. Roots were split in half and the surface roughness of their canals was evaluated in 12 three dimensional roughness reconstructions using a scanning electron microscope. Rz (nm) values were calculated in three areas of each reconstruction and analyzed (α = 0.05). Mann‐Whitney tests showed that surface roughness was significantly higher overall in the AR group (Rz = 967 ± 250 nm) compared with the CR group (Rz = 739 ± 239 nm; p = 0.044). The roughness values generally increased from apical towards the coronal third in both groups. A less aggressive finishing file or a continuous rotary system to end the cleaning and shaping stage may be beneficial to reduce roughness of the root canal surface.  相似文献

This study sought to evaluate the efficacy of passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) on removing the smear layer and debris from root dentin using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Twenty‐five bovine incisors were manually prepared and divided into three groups according to the final irrigation protocol: EDTA, final irrigation with 12 mL of 17% EDTA for 3 minutes followed by 5 mL of 2.5% NaOCl; EDTA/PUI, final flush with 4 mL of 17% EDTA and PUI for 30 seconds. These procedures were repeated three times to standardize the volume of the irrigant. Control group, after preparation, the specimens were irrigated only with 17 mL of 2.5% NaOCl. The roots were fractured and analyzed using SEM. The intragroup analysis revealed that the EDTA/PUI protocol removed a higher amount of debris at the cervical third (P = 0.03). The intergroup analysis revealed that EDTA/PUI presented the lowest amount of debris at the cervical third (P = 0.007). Smear layer scores were higher in the control group compared with the EDTA and EDTA/PUI groups, but only at the cervical third (P = 0.02). None of the final irrigant protocols completely removed the smear layer and debris. EDTA/PUI only improved the removal of debris at the cervical third. Microsc. Res. The main purpose of this study was to compare the cyclic fatigue resistances of the three different nickel–titanium files in 2.5% sodium hypochlorite solution and distilled water at physiologic intracanal temperature (35°C). Three NiTi files such as One Curve (OC) (Micro‐Mega, Besancon, France), OneShape (OS) (Micro‐Mega), and Protaper Next (PTN) X2 (Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland) were tested for cyclic fatigue resistance inside artificial stainless steel canal block with curvature 60° and 5 mm radius. The block was fixed inside a hot water bath of distilled water or 2.5% sodium hypochlorite and the temperature was set at 35 ± 1°C. The number of cycles to fracture data were recorded and all the fracture surfaces of files were evaluated by using scanning electron microscopy. The number of cyclic to fracture data were analyzed statistically via Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney U tests. OC showed the highest cyclic fatigue resistance at distilled water while PTN X2 showed the lowest cyclic fatigue resistance at 2.5% sodium hypochlorite. When cycling fatigue test medium were changed from distilled water to sodium hypochlorite solution, the resistance of the files to cyclic fatigue were decreased. SEM analysis confirmed that all scanned samples were fractured due to cyclic fatigue. The OC rotary instruments have more cyclic resistance than OS and PTN X2. The sodium hypochlorite solution reduces the resistance of the rotary instruments.  相似文献
