Straight single-line defect optical waveguides in photonic crystal slabs are designed by the finite difference time-domain method and fabricated into a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer. By employing an airbridge structure, clear light propagation for both polarizations is observed without any leakage along the waveguide. This experimental result is well explained by photonic bands of pure guided modes. Minimum propagation loss is estimated to be 11 dB/mm. This value is lower than that reported so far for three-line-defect waveguides with an SOI slab structure and almost comparable to that for an index confinement waveguide with a rectangular Si core. This propagation loss is dominated by the scattering loss by some irregularities. However, photonic crystal waveguides have the possibility of an essential lower scattering loss than in the index confinement waveguide because of the inhibition of radiation modes by the photonic bandgap 相似文献

The effects of process-induced disorder location on planar photonic crystal waveguide properties are numerically investigated using three-dimensional finite difference time domain simulation by introducing random fluctuations of the hole radius, size, position, and shape of air-holes of two-dimensional planar photonic crystal slab. Results reveal that bandgap properties are extremely robust with respect to disorder. It is shown that the very first rows of holes play a major role in the amount of disorder-induced optical loss, and that keeping the first two rows of holes unchanged leads to a blue-shift of slow light waveguide properties. 相似文献

Photonic crystal slabs combine a slab waveguide with an in-plane photonic crystal. Light is then confined in-plane by the photonic crystal and out-of-plane by the slab waveguide. The etched structures will cause light to scatter out of the waveguide plane. We studied the out-of-plane scattering losses using a two-dimensional approximation of this three-dimensional structure, with etched slots instead of holes. Our simulation techniques include mode expansion with perfectly matched layer absorbing boundary conditions. We show that the losses increase with higher index contrast, but that with very high-index contrasts light can be coupled into lossless Bloch modes 相似文献

We show that by placing a slab of semiconductor material between two photonic bandgap (PBG) mirrors, waveguide modes at frequencies out of the PBG can be obtained. These modes are similar to the modes of a conventional dielectric slab waveguide. Using these modes, we can obtain very good coupling between a PBG waveguide and a dielectric slab waveguide with similar slab properties. We discuss the properties of these slab modes and outline the guideline for the optimization of the PBG waveguides based on these properties 相似文献

Very efficient light transmission over a length of several millimetres through linear photonic crystal slab waveguides, patterned into an InGaAlAs waveguiding layer on InP substrate, is demonstrated. Quantitative evaluation of the light propagation in these waveguides, using the Fabry-Perot resonance method, yields a minimum loss of 1.6 dB/mm, for a waveguide with seven missing rows at 1550 nm wavelength 相似文献

We describe fabrication of the first optical star coupler in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology. The 5/spl times/9 coupler consists of two silicon rib waveguide arrays with a radiative slab waveguide region. The star geometry was analyzed and designed using the beam propagation method. The coupler exhibits low loss (average excess insertion loss /spl alpha//spl sim/1.3 dB) and good coupling uniformity (standard deviation /spl sigma//spl sim/1.4 dB) at /spl lambda/=1.55 /spl mu/m. It represents a key component for realization of photonic circuits in a silicon integrated circuit technology. 相似文献

A rib optical waveguide using the concept of optical cutoff to provide isolation between adjacent waveguides in a photonic integrated circuit is disclosed. Due to the evanescent nature of light propagation in cutoff waveguides, this cutoff mesa rib waveguide permits fabrication of single-moded rib waveguides with minimal self-interference and crosstalk by means of light guided in a remaining slab waveguide. 提出了一种新型光子晶体太赫兹(THz)波导,该波导包层为硅介质中含有按三角形格子周期排列的空气孔,纤芯为有机材料聚乙烯(PE).应用平面波法(PWM)分析了这种光子晶体太赫兹波导的带隙结构,研究了空气填充率变化对光子带隙(PBG)结构的影响;然后应用频域有限差分法(FDFD)对不同参数太赫兹波导的损耗进行了计算.结果表明,这是一种适合太赫兹波传输的带隙效应波导,选择较高填充率,较大孔间距,较多周期结构层数可以得到较低的泄漏损耗,选取合适的参数损耗最低值可以达到1.5 dB/km. 相似文献

An AlGaAs-based near-infrared 2-D photonic crystal (PC) with an air-bridge structure featuring defect waveguides has been developed. For the sample without defect waveguides, measurements of the optical transmission characteristics in the wavelength range from 850 nm to 1100 nm showed a deep attenuation due to a bandgap with 30-35 dB attenuation and transmittance of nearly 100% for the guided modes. Optical propagation properties of defect waveguides were obtained by two methods: measurements of transmission spectra and plan-view observations of the optical beam trace along the waveguide with an infrared-vidicon camera. 3-D finite-difference time-domain simulations for the band structure and transmission spectra in the air-bridge slab with and without defect waveguides have revealed the appearance of four defect propagation modes specific to the defect waveguide, between two slab modes for the defect-free photonic crystal slab. A metallic hollow waveguide with inner dielectric multilayers is proposed for the transmission of infrared light and its basic transmission characteristics are fully analyzed by using a two-dimensional slab waveguide model. The power loss in the waveguide is shown to be extremely reduced by coating dielectric layers properly. Simple loss formulas are also presented which consider absorptions of dielectric materials, and minimum possible losses are theoretically estimated. Finally, relations to bending losses in the waveguide are discussed. 相似文献

The modal solutions of the TE- and TM-modes of an arbitrary graded-index dielectric slab waveguide have been derived by applying the generalized telegraphist's equations to the equivalent inhomogeneous parallel-plate waveguide model with electric or magnetic walls. These modal solutions have been employed in a mode-matching procedure to calculate the transmission properties of step discontinuities in arbitrarily graded-index dielectric slab waveguides such as diffused optical waveguides having exponential, Gaussian and complementary error-function index profiles. For slab waveguides containing an abrupt offset, the radiated power is found to increase smoothly with increasing displacement. Power loss calculations for an abrupt change in diffusion depth for which the dominant mode is in the vicinity of cutoff, exhibit a sharp transition from almost zero loss to nearly total radiation loss 相似文献

Formulas of the pure bending loss and the transition loss valid for TM modes in dielectric optical slab waveguides are presented. The characteristic of the total transmission loss of a step-index slab waveguide containing a circular bend having an asymmetric waveguide structure are analysed numerically by applying derived loss formulas. 提出了一种光子晶体波导与随机介质相结合的特殊型波导的设计方法。基于光子晶体波导模型,建立了ZnO随机介质作为线缺陷的光子晶体波导模型,采用时域有限差分(FDTD)法分析了ZnO随机介质的加入对光子晶体波导系统的频率特性、时域特性及增益特性的影响,并且与纯随机介质系统和含有线缺陷的光子晶体波导系统进行对比。分析结果表明,当在光子晶体波导的缺陷层引入ZnO随机介质时,随机介质使得光在缺陷处振荡并得到放大,局域化程度比纯随机介质系统和纯光子晶体波导系统更高;且光与随机介质的相互作用使得光在波导中时间延长,激光阈值降低。这种光子晶体波导可用于制备可嵌入到集成光路领域和低阈值的微型激光器。 相似文献

The authors report room temperature lasing by pulsed photopumping at line and point composite defects, i.e. a 60/spl deg/-bend, a Y-branch and an intersection of single line defect waveguides, in a GaInAsP photonic crystal slab.
