The effect of cake compression on the centrifugal dewatering is investigated under various rotating speeds and different kinds of cakes. A numerical method is proposed to estimate the capillary pressure and cake permeability under various cake saturations. The most dewatering in this study are operated at the funicular state of cake. The cake permeability decreases, while the capillary pressure increases rapidly, with the decrease of cake saturation during a centrifugal dewatering. The cake saturation can also be simulated once the relations among capillary pressure, cake permeability, and cake saturation are known. The deviations between simulated saturations and experimental data for compressible talc cakes are less than 2%. The centrifugal dewatering of compressible cake includes two mechanisms, the water squeeze due to cake compression and the centrifugal drainage due to pressure difference. The role of cake compression is dominant at the initial 500 s of the dewatering period, and these two factors are almost equal in magnitude as well as in importance when the cake approaches its equilibrium saturation. The porosity and compressibility of cake play the major roles in determining the equilibrium cake saturation. The equilibrium saturation of the compressible talc cake with a lower porosity is much higher than that of incompressible Al2O3 cake under a fixed rotating speed. An increase in rotating speed (centrifugal effect) results in a lower equilibrium cake saturation for either compressible or incompressible cakes; however, the increase in rotating speed is more efficient for an incompressible cake in the centrifugal dewatering.  相似文献

The constitutive equations proposed by Tiller and Shirato were analyzed and a new constitutive equation originating from the sediment thickness was proposed. A new boundary condition of the filter cake based on the solid compressive pressure of the first solid layer,p f , was also proposed. Accurate average specific cake resistances at various pressures and the thickness of cake were calculated with the new constitutive equation and boundary conditions. The influence ofp f on the cake thickness and average porosity was studied theoretically. Using three constitutive equations, it was proved that the compressibility n obtained from filtration results instead of CPC (compression-permeability cell) of very compressible cake could not have an exact value.  相似文献

The compression properties of IGCC (integrated coal gasification combined cycle) fly ash cake on a ceramic filter were carefully investigated under well-controlled conditions. Overall cake porosity and pressure drop of dust cake of three different particles of geometric mean diameters of 3.7, 6.2, and 12.1 Μm, and dynamic shape factors of 1.37, 1.57 and 1.65, respectively, were investigated, at face velocities of 0.02-0.06 m/s. Overall cake porosity was strongly dependent on face velocity, mass load, and particle size. The expressions for overall cake porosity, considering the compression effect, and pressure drop across the dust cake were developed with good agreement with experimental results.  相似文献

Experimental measurements were made of the average specific cake resistance during the initial period of cake filtration, and the theoretical calculations about the period were also performed. The “filtration-permeation method” in the filtration cell of small area was used to measure the flow rate during the initial period of filtration, which is essentially characterized by the large flux due to fast flow rate and the rapid change of flow rate within a relatively short time interval. The measured average specific cake resistances of thin cakes which represent the cakes of initial period had very large values compared to the overall average specific cake resistance. This experimental result was contrary to the conventional theory about the initial period. Applying the “unified theory on solid-liquid separation” to the initial period, the average specific cake resistances at the initial period can have the large values--more than two times greater than that of the overall value.  相似文献

To clarify the internal structures of the filter cake formed on the membrane surface in protein ultrafiltration, a method has been developed for measuring the variations of protein concentration across the filter cake on the basis of the principle of inclined ultrafiltration, where the membrane was inclined and a large amount of filter cake was formed, and the results were compared with the calculations based on a compressible cake filtration model, which explicitly took the non-homogeneity and the compressibility of the filter cake into account. The experimental results obtained from ultrafiltration of bovine serum albumin (BSA) solutions under constant pressure conditions clearly demonstrated that the filter cake tended to have a much more compact structure at the membrane in comparison with a relatively loose condition at the surface. It was also found that the thickness of the filter cake formed on the membrane increased as the filtration progressed. Further, the effects of pH and the solute concentration in the feed solution on the structure of the filter cake have been examined experimentally. The measured concentration distributions accorded well with the calculated results based on a compressible cake filtration model. This study revealed that the dynamic deposition behaviors of the protein molecules in dead-end ultrafiltration could be accurately described by a compressible cake filtration model.  相似文献

A series of reverse osmosis (RO) membrane filtration experiments was performed systematically in order to investigate the effects of various hydrodynamic and physicochemical operational parameters on a cake layer formation in colloidal and particulate suspensions. Bench-scale fouling experiments with a thin-film composite RO membrane were performed at various combinations of trans-membrane pressure (TMP), cross-flow velocity (CFV), particle size, pH, and ionic strength. In this study, silica particles with two different mean diameters of 0.1 and 3.0 μm were used as model colloids. Membrane filtration experiments with colloidal suspensions under various hydrodynamic operating conditions resulted that more significant permeate flux decline was observed as TMP increased and CFV decreased, which was attributed to the higher accumulative mass of particles on the membrane surface. Results of fouling experiments under various physicochemical operating conditions demonstrated that the rate of flux decline decreased significantly with an increase of the ionic strength as well as particle size, while the flux decline rate did not vary when solution pH changed. The experimentally measured cake layer thickness increased with a decrease in particle size and solution ionic strength. Furthermore, the model estimation of cake layer thickness by using a cake filtration theory based on the hydraulic resistance of membrane and cake layer was performed under various ionic strength conditions. The primary model parameters including accumulated mass and specific cake resistance were calculated from the cake layer resistance. This result indicated that the formation of cake layer could be closely related with solution water chemistry. The model estimated cake layer thickness values were in good agreement with the experimentally measured values.  相似文献

Based upon a new conception that the solid compressive pressure on a cake surface is not null, almost of all solid-liquid separation operations have been re-examined. For cake filtration, the phenomenon caused by the solid compressive pressure on a cake surface is discussed for thin cake. New expression and hindered sed-imentation theories are developed by above new conception using Darcy’s equation. Application of the new conception to centrifugal filtration and tangential filtration is also discussed. Above results lead to the conclusion that cake filtration, expression, hindered sedimentation, centrifugal filtration and tangential filtration can be described with a unified theory, and the main difference between the operations is only the boundary condition of cake.  相似文献

Different kinds of Dextran-MnO2 gel particles are prepared in different conditions, depending on variables such as the molecular weight of dextran and formation temperature. Some physical properties and filtration characteristics of these gel particles are measured and discussed. Although the mean sizes of these gel particles are very close to each other, their filtration characteristics are far different due to their mechanical strength and compressibility. A typical filtration curve of gel particles can be divided into three regions, and a retardation cake compression during the filtration can be observed from the curve. The particle formation temperature has a trivial effect on their mechanical strength. An increase in formation temperature leads to only a slight decrease in particle size. On the other hand, gel particles are formed by using dextrans with three different molecular weights - 70,000 (sample A), 500,000 (sample B) and 2,000,000 Da (sample C) - and are used in filtration experiments. The results show that the molecular weight of dextran plays a major role in determining particle mechanical strength; the sequence of particle hardness is sample B > sample A > sample C. The dynamic analysis method proposed by Hwang and Hseuh [K.J. Hwang, C.L. Hseuh, J. Membr. Sci. 214 (2003) 259] is employed to estimate the local cake properties in a filter cake, e.g., solid compressive pressure, porosity and specific filtration resistance. Because sample C has the highest compressibility, it constructs a cake with the lowest porosity and the highest specific filtration resistance; and consequently, the lowest filtration rate. Although the mechanical strength of sample B is higher than that of sample A, its wider particle size distribution results in lower cake porosity and higher filtration resistance, as well as a lower filtration rate. It could be said that the filtration rate decreases with an increase in the molecular weight of dextran.  相似文献

A potential method has been developed for evaluating simultaneously both the average specific resistance and average porosity of the filter cake formed in unstirred dead‐end ultrafiltration of nanocolloids such as bovine serum albumin solution and silica sol. The method consists of variable pressure filtration followed by constant pressure filtration. The relation between the average specific cake resistance and the pressure drop across the cake was determined from the evolution of the filtration rate with time in the course of the variable pressure filtration period, based on the compressible cake filtration model. The average porosity was evaluated from the significant flux decline caused by a sudden reduction in the cake surface area in the middle of the constant pressure filtration period. Effects of various additives, such as diatomaceous earth, inorganic adsorbent, and polymeric flocculant, on cake filtration performance were evaluated. By performing the standard vacuum filtration experiments under a constant pressure condition, we quantified their ability to reduce cake compressibility and to remove fine particulate matters. From the flux decline curves obtained, we used modified Ruth equation to determine the cake compressibility index. The filtrate clarity was quantified by measuring its turbidity spectrophotometrically. Diatomaceous earth filter aid was very effective in reducing the compressibility thereby improving filtrate flux. Calcium phosphate adsorbent was more effective in clarity improvement than in flux enhancement, whereas an anionic flocculant was effective in both aspects. When these additives were used together, the expected additive, synergic effect was not realized. However, about 3.5 times higher initial flux and 6-fold improved clarity were obtained as compared to the control experiment. Experimentally obtained flux decline curves were perfectly fitted into one of the Hermia’s blocking filtration law equations. Also, it was experimentally observed that the compressibility reduction improved filtrate clarity in a linear fashion. This type of approach is useful to quantitatively determine each additive’s characteristics and thus to maximize the performance of cake filtration operations.  相似文献

Crystal size and morphology have been varied by changing the initial supersaturation ratio and the temperature in reactive crystallization experiments. The influence of the chord length distribution, average cake porosity, and filtration pressure difference on the average cake resistance of polycrystalline particles of an industrially produced aromatic amine has been investigated by means of partial least squares (PLS) regression and sensitivity analysis. Analysis of the results has disclosed that wider chord length distributions as well as lower values of the measured average porosity lead to higher values for the average cake resistance. However, PLS regression and sensitivity analysis have identified the applied pressure difference itself as the most significant parameter influencing the magnitude of the cake resistance. This unexpected behavior is accounted for by compression of the filter cake occurring predominantly in small layers above the filter cloth characteristic for highly compressible cakes.  相似文献

This study investigated experimentally the consolidation dewatering and centrifugal-settling processes for activated sludge subjected to cationic polyelectrolyte flocculation. The results were reported for the dynamic response of sediment cake thickness (an index for cake compaction) under various doses of polyelectrolyte conditioning, compression-permeability cell configuration and mode of operation (batch and continuous) in a centrifugal-settling cell. The reduction in sediment thickness of sludge by consolidation and centrifugation was found to correspond mostly well with the optimal dose of polyelectrolyte based on the capillary suction time. The relaxation/rebound of cake thickness was observed in both consolidation dewatering and centrifugal dewatering with comparable compaction/relaxation time scale ratios. The equilibrium sediment consolidation ratio increases with the effective solid pressure characterized by Pm and Ps, for the consolidation dewatering and centrifugal sedimentation, respectively. The experimentally determined time scales of the cake consolidation dewatering/centrifugal sedimentation processes agree reasonably well with the theory by Landman and Russel (Phys. Pulse-jet bag filters are frequently employed for particle removal from off gases. Separated solids form a layer on the permeable filter media called filter cake. The cake is responsible for increasing pressure drop. Therefore, the cake has to be detached at a predefined upper pressure drop limit or at predefined time intervals. Thus the process is intrinsically semi-continuous. The cake formation and cake detachment are interdependent and may influence the performance of the filter. Therefore, understanding formation and detachment of filter cake is important. In this regard, the filter media is the key component in the system. Needle felts are the most commonly used media in bag filters. Cake formation studies with heat treated and membrane coated needle felts in pilot scale pulse jet bag filter were carried out. The data is processed according to the procedures that were published already [Powder Technology, Volume 173, Issue 2, 19 April 2007, Pages 93-106]. Pressure drop evolution, cake height distribution evolution, cake patches area distribution and their characterization using fractal analysis on different needle felts are presented here. It is observed that concavity of pressure drop curve for membrane coated needle felt is principally caused by presence of inhomogeneous cake area load whereas it is inherent for heat treated media. Presence of residual cake enhances the concavity of pressure drop at the start of filtration cycle. Patchy cleaning is observed only when jet pulse pressure is too low and unable to provide the necessary force to detach the cake. The border line is very sharp. Based on experiments with limestone dust and three types of needle felts, for the jet pulse pressure above 4 bar and filtration velocity below 50 mm/s, cake is detached completely except a thin residual layer (100-200 μm). Uniformity and smoothness of residual cake depends on the surface characteristics of the filter media. Cake height distribution of residual cake and newly formed cake during filtration prevails. The patch size analysis and fractal analysis reveal that residual cake grow in size (latterly) following regeneration initially on the base with edges smearing out, however, the cake heights are not leveled off. Fractal dimension of cake patches boundary falls in the range of 1-1.4 and depends on vertical position as well as time of filtration. Cake height measurements with Polyimide (PI) needle felts were hampered on account of its photosensitive nature.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of using the resistivity and deposition rate data from Crossflow Sampler-Modified Fouling Index Ultrafiltration (CFS-MFIUF) measurements to determine the coupled effects of colloidal fouling and cake enhanced osmotic pressure (CEOP) effect. Cake filtration derived from CFS-MFIUF was combined with a CEOP model to predict the crossflow RO fouling profile under constant flux filtration. The prediction based on resistivity, I′ from CFS-MFIUF measurement alone was found to underestimate the RO fouling for high salinity solutions. However, when incorporating the mass information from the CFS-MFIUF test to account for the CEOP effect, the prediction showed good agreement with the TMP profile of the RO system. The results indicated that the CFS-MFIUF test which includes the CEOP effect is a very promising technique to provide an estimation of the RO colloidal fouling profile. When the changes of cake thickness and porosity throughout the filtration were considered, the predicted TMP profile based on the model clearly indicated a two-stage of fouling profile which agreed well with the experimental data. Additional studies on the effects of cake thickness and porosity on CEOP highlighted the important influence of cake structure on CEOP.  相似文献

对高黏度物料加入纤维素助滤剂的预敷过滤性能进行了研究,说明不同的预敷条件对预敷层的过滤性能会有很大影响。通过改变预敷压力和浓度,对纤维素滤饼层的过滤比阻、可压缩性系数和孔隙率进行了研究。实验表明,纤维素预敷层的比阻随压力增加而增加,随浓度增加而减小;孔隙率随压力增加而减小,随浓度增加而增加;可压缩性系数随浓度增加而增加。纤维素助滤剂为中等可压缩性物料,孔隙率大。研究结果可为高黏度物料用纤维素预敷过滤的工程应用提供参考。  相似文献

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging was used to measure velocity and density profiles in 3-D conical hoppers fed from an open vertical silo. Discharge of a 200 μm-diameter powder in both mass and plug flow was studied with hoppers of different half angles, of 10° and 80°, respectively. An analytical solution for compressible (variable density) mass flow in the 3-D axi-symmetric geometry was also developed following the procedure outlined in Tardos (1997) and Tardos and Mort (2005). The density variation and velocity profiles obtained experimentally were compared to predictions of this theory for dense, compressible granular flows. We found, from both theory and experiment, that the powder has to exhibit significant dilation (compressibility) as it is accelerated through the constriction in the hopper. The degree of compressibility was found, experimentally, to be lower than that predicted by the mass flow hopper theory. The powder unexpectedly exhibited a boundary layer with a fully-rough boundary condition in the mass flow hopper. In the funnel-flow hopper, the expected “dead zone” was found around the orifice and extended about one diameter length into the silo. The centerline velocity increased according to an exponential function.  相似文献

From experimental batch runs of filtration with sedimentation above the cake formed, a procedure is proposed and applied to experimental data for obtaining the relationships between the settling solids velocity in the hindered settling zone, the local specific resistance and the effective pressure and the solids concentration. Considering the material and momentum balances in the hindered settling zone above the cake, in the cake and in the filter membrane, a simulation program was obtained that satisfactorily reproduces the experimental runs of filtration with sedimentation runs. This simulation work confirms the hypothesis considered in the theory of filtration with sedimentation runs, e.g. the fact that the characteristic lines arise tangently from the cake surface. In addition, the method developed for obtaining the different relationships considered has been demonstrated as correct. The simulation of filtration without sedimentation runs (stirring the suspension above the cake) has also been studied.  相似文献

Packed beds used in absorption columns are evaluated to determine whether they can also be beneficial for cake‐forming filtrations. To assess this, model systems are characterized and separated by using a dead‐end filter cell. Filtrations are conducted with different packings; the filtrate amount over time and resulting turbidity are evaluated. Packings increase the filter cake resistance and the separation time of the cakes formed with approximately incompressible solids. However, they exhibit a positive effect on the filtration of a more complex, compressible substance; the process is not only accelerated, but also the quality of the obtained filtrate is not compromised. These results demonstrate potential in the use of packed beds for the filtration of complex biogenic suspensions.  相似文献
