This paper considers the ways that cooperating terminals can be connected to each other in wireless relay networks and the constraints imposed by the availability of different system resources. A framework is developed that exposes the relationship between constraints on available system resources and the achievable combinations of communication links between cooperating terminals. Cooperative connectivity models defined by the achievable combinations of links are derived, associated with their minimum cost constraint sets, and mapped to diversity techniques presented in the literature. The constraints considered are the available number of orthogonal relaying channels, the ability of terminals to diversity combine signals on a single common channel, the ability of terminals to diversity combine signals on orthogonal channels, the ability of terminals to transmit signals on multiple orthogonal channels, and the ability of terminals to cancel the effects of interhop interference. 相似文献

Control plane technologies will play a major role in next generation transport networks. Many publications and standards claim that approaches like Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching (GMPLS) and Automatically Switched Optical Networks/Transport Networks (ASON/ASTN) will simplify network operation and will enable new services. In this paper, an approach is presented to analyze the business processes of transport network operators. The main operator processes are mapped to the well-known value chain concepts of Porter. This allows investigating the advantages of control plane technologies from an economic point of view. This paper shows that the introduction of control plane technology affects the business of the individual operators as well as the overall value system they form as a virtual enterprise. Wireless networks offer novel means to enhance social interactions. In particular, peer-to-peer wireless communications enable direct and real-time interaction with nearby devices and communities and could extend current online social networks by providing complementary services including real-time friend and community detection and localized data sharing without infrastructure requirement. After years of research, the deployment of such peer-to-peer wireless networks is finally being considered. A fundamental primitive is the ability to discover geographic proximity of specific communities of people (e.g, friends or neighbors). To do so, mobile devices must exchange some community identifiers or messages. We investigate privacy threats introduced by such communications, in particular, adversarial community detection. We use the general concept of community pseudonyms to abstract anonymous community identification mechanisms and define two distinct notions of community privacy by using a challenge-response methodology. An extensive cost analysis and simulation results throw further light on the feasibility of these mechanisms in the upcoming generation of wireless peer-to-peer networks. 相似文献

This paper introduces and discusses MoHotS and wireless chain networks. The paper proposes integration of unused capacity in hot spots. We discuss the area of coverage and the probability of making connections in wider area wireless networks based on MoHotS. The area of coverage of MoHotS is evaluated for MoHotS on highways. It also addresses the limits of interference in networks of wireless MoHotS and chain networks. It is shown that the interference from other MoHotS converges for large N and is tamed by the path loss exponent. Terrain characteristics are described as well.
Dr Johnson I Agbinya holds a doctorate degree from La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia. He is an Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at the University of the Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa and a Senior Lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney. He was a Principal Engineer at Vodafone Australia from 2000 to 2003 and a Senior Research Scientist at CSIRO from 1993 to 2000. His areas of research interests are personal area networks, networks on mobile platforms and in uncovered areas, ultra wideband communication, wireless communication networks, mobile network design, wireless access methods, air interface, planning, mobility and moving wireless networks. He also has extensive experience in DSP, signal processing and biometrics. In a multirate wireless network, low data rate nodes consume proportionately more channel resources than high data rate nodes,
resulting in low overall network performance. The use of multiple non-overlapping frequency channels in multirate wireless
networks can overcome the performance degradation by having nodes communicate on different channels based on their data rates.
However, no effort has been invested to utilize the multiple channels for a multirate wireless network. In this paper, we
introduce the Data Rate Adaptive Channel Assignment (DR-CA) algorithm for a multichannel multirate single-hop wireless network
to provide higher network throughput and network efficiency. The main idea is to assign links having same or comparable data
rates on the same channel to minimize the wastage of channel resources due to interference between high data links and low
data rate links. We also design a new Intermediary Multichannel Layer (IML) which resides between network layer and link layer,
at which we implement the DR-CA algorithm. The IML design requires no modifications to the underlying MAC layer and upper
layers of the network stack. To evaluate the proposed algorithm we define new performance metrics—channel efficiency and network
efficiency for a multichannel multirate wireless network. Using OPNET simulations, we show that the multichannel enhancement
using our proposed algorithm provides significant performance improvement in terms of network throughput, channel efficiency,
and network efficiency over existing approaches in multirate wireless networks. Under heavy load condition, the network efficiency
using DR-CA algorithm reaches 90% of the maximum limit. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to utilize the

Energy conservation is important for ad hoc networks. However, little effort has been made to carefully study the energy cost metrics upon which the design of various energy efficient algorithms is based. More specifically, most existing energy consumption models only considered energy cost of exchanging data packets, although common wireless protocols also need control packets (e.g., ACK) for reliable data transmissions. Without considering the energy cost of exchanging control packets, these existing models tend to underestimate the actual energy consumption, and thus leading to suboptimal energy efficient designs. In this paper, we develop energy consumption models that take into account energy consumption due to data packets, control packets and retransmission. We verify by simulations that our models match the actual energy consumption much better than existing models. In addition, we show that a minimum energy routing protocol based on an accurate model of ours performs much better than those based on existing models 相似文献

Printed circuit board antennas degrade considerably when the wireless node is placed on or near metallic surfaces. One such application is wireless alarm network where nodes are placed on a metallic fence. As wireless transmission is regarded as the most expensive operation in terms of sensor node energy, it is more than a necessity to have a good antenna design. We simulate the performances of typical printed circuit board (PCB) antennas with proximity to metallic fence and simulations show that traditional antenna structures exhibit poor performance for these applications. Instead, we propose a low-cost two-antenna diversity system that utilizes two PCB antennas with different radiation pattern coverage. Antenna diversity by means of radio frequency switches was implemented for two configurations: single state antenna selection and equal-gain diversity combination. Diversity gains were calculated for free-space and over-the-fence operating conditions, and the best antenna configuration is suggested for practical applications. 相似文献

In this paper, we study multi-fiber optical networks with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). We extend the definition of the well-known Wavelength Assignment Problem (WAP) to the case of k fibers per link and w wavelengths per fiber, generalization that we will call (k,w)-WAP. We develop a new model for the (k,w)-WAP based on conflict hypergraphs. Furthermore, we consider two natural optimization problems that arise from the (k,w)-WAP: minimizing the number of fibers k given a number of wavelengths w, on one hand, and minimizing w given k, on the other. In this paper, we deal with the problem of how to design cellular networks in a cost-effective way. We first propose an optimization model that deals with selecting the location of the base station controllers (BSCs) and mobile service switching centers (MSCs), selecting their types, designing the network topology and selecting the link types. In order to find a “good” solution, we propose a tabu search algorithm. Numerical results show that the tabu search algorithm produces solutions close to a proposed lower bound.Steven Chamberland received the Electrical Engineering degree from the École Polytechnique de Montréal in 1994 and the Ph.D. degree in Operations Research in 1998 also from the École Polytechnique. From 1998 to 1999, he was with the network architecture group of Bell Canada and from 1999 to 2001, he was a professor at the École de technologie supérieure. Since 2001, he has been an assistant professor of Computer Engineering at the École Polytechnique de Montréal. He received the Best Paper Award of the Ninth International Workshop in Expert Systems & their Applications (France, 1989), a Distinguished Paper Award from OPNETWORK’2003 (Washington, USA). One of these co-authored books, Télécommunications et transmission de données (Eyrolles, 1992), received special mention from Telecoms Magazine (France, 1994). His research interests include wireline and wireless networks, mobile computing, performance evaluation, artificial intelligence, and electronic learning. He is a Fellow of Engineering Institute of Canada, senior member of IEEE, a member of ACM and IEEE Communications Society.
