Polypropylene/aluminum–multi-walled carbon nanotube (PP/Al–CNT) composites were prepared by a twin-screw extruder. The morphology indicates that the CNTs are well embedded or implanted within Al-flakes rather than attached on the surface. During preparation of composites, the CNTs came apart from Al–CNT so that free CNTs as well as Al–CNT were observed in PP/Al–CNT composite. The crystallization temperatures of PP/CNT and PP/Al–CNT composites were increased from 111 °C for PP to 127 °C for the composites. The decomposition temperature increased by 55 °C for PP/CNT composite and 75 °C for PP/Al–CNT composite. The PP/Al–CNT composite showed higher thermal conductivity than PP/CNT and PP/Al-flake composites with increasing filler content. PP/Al–CNT composites showed the viscosity values between PP/CNT and PP/Al-flake composites. PP/Al–CNT composite showed higher tensile modulus and lower tensile strength with increasing filler content compared to PP/CNT and PP/Al-flake composites.  相似文献

Aluminum composites reinforced with CNTs were fabricated by pressureless infiltration process and the tribological properties of the composites were investigated. Al has been infiltrated into CNTs–Mg–Al preform by pressureless infiltration in N2 atmosphere at 800 °C. By means of scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), it was found that CNTs are well dispersed and embedded in the Al matrix. The friction and wear behaviors of the composite were investigated using a pin-on-disk wear tester under unlubricated condition. The tests were conducted at a sliding speed of 0.1571 m/s under an applied load of 30 N. The experimental results indicated that the friction coefficient of the composite decreased with increasing the volume fraction of CNTs due to the self-lubrication and unique topological structure of CNTs. Within the range of CNTs volume fraction from 0% to 20%, the wear rate of the composite decreased steadily with the increase of CNTs content in the composite. The favorable effects of CNTs on wear resistance are attributed to their excellent mechanical properties, being well dispersed in the composite and the efficiency of the reinforcement of CNTs.  相似文献

A metal matrix composite has been obtained by a novel synthesis route, reacting Al3Ti and graphite at 1000 °C for about 1 min after ball-milling and compaction. The resulting composite is made of an aluminium matrix reinforced by nanometer sized TiC particles (average diameter 70 nm). The average TiC/Al ratio is 34.6 wt.% (22.3 vol.%). The microstructure consists of an intimate mixture of two domains, an unreinforced domain made of the Al solid solution with a low TiC reinforcement content, and a reinforced domain. This composite exhibits uncommon mechanical properties with regard to previous micrometer sized Al–TiC composites and to its high reinforcement volume fraction, with a Young’s modulus of ∼110 GPa, an ultimate tensile strength of about 500 MPa and a maximum elongation of 6%.  相似文献

Nanocrystalline Al–Si alloy-based composites containing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were produced by hot rolling ball-milled powders. During the milling process, the grain size was effectively reduced and the Si element was dissolved in the Al matrix. Furthermore, CNTs were gradually dispersed into the aluminum powders, providing an easy consolidation route using a thermo-mechanical process. The composite sheet containing 3 vol.% of CNTs shows ~520 MPa of yield strength with a 5% plastic elongation to failure.  相似文献

In this investigation, a new kind of metal matrix composites with a matrix of pure aluminum and hybrid reinforcement of Al2O3 and SiC particles was fabricated for the first time by anodizing followed by eight cycles accumulative roll bonding (ARB). The resulting microstructures and the corresponding mechanical properties of composites within different stages of ARB process were studied. It was found that with increasing the ARB cycles, alumina layers were fractured, resulting in homogenous distribution of Al2O3 particles in the aluminum matrix. Also, the distribution of SiC particles was improved and the porosity between particles and the matrix was decreased. It was observed that the tensile strength of composites improved by increasing the ARB passes, i.e. the tensile strength of the Al/1.6 vol.% Al2O3/1 vol.% SiC composite was measured to be about 3.1 times higher than as-received material. In addition, tensile strength of composites decreased by increasing volume fraction of SiC particles to more than 1 vol.%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation of fractured surfaces showed that the failure mechanism of broken hybrid composite was shear ductile rupture.  相似文献

Al–Cu matrix composites reinforced with diamond particles (Al–Cu/diamond composites) have been produced by a squeeze casting method. Cu content added to Al matrix was varied from 0 to 3.0 wt.% to detect the effect on thermal conductivity and thermal expansion behavior of the resultant Al–Cu/diamond composites. The measured thermal conductivity for the Al–Cu/diamond composites increased from 210 to 330 W/m/K with increasing Cu content from 0 to 3.0 wt.%. Accordingly, the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) was tailored from 13 × 10−6 to 6 × 10−6/K, which is compatible with the CTE of semiconductors in electronic packaging applications. The enhanced thermal conductivity and reduced coefficient of thermal expansion were ascribed to strong interface bonding in the Al–Cu/diamond composites. Cu addition has lowered the melting point and resulted in the formation of Al2Cu phase in Al matrix. This is the underlying mechanism responsible for the strengthening of Al–Cu/diamond interface. The results show that Cu alloying is an effective approach to promoting interface bonding between Al and diamond.  相似文献

In this investigation, carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced aluminum composites were prepared by the molecular-level mixing process using copper coated CNTs. The mixing of CNTs was accomplished by ultrasonic mixing and ball milling. Electroless Cu-coated CNTs were used to enhance the interfacial bonding between CNTs and aluminum. Scanning electron microscope analysis revealed the homogenous dispersion of Cu-coated CNTs in the composite samples compared with the uncoated CNTs. The samples were pressureless sintered under vacuum followed by hot rolling to promote the uniform microstructure and dispersion of CNTs. In 1.0 wt.% uncoated and Cu-coated CNT/Al composites, compared to pure Al, the microhardness increased by 44% and 103%, respectively. As compared to the pure Al, for 1.0 wt.% uncoated CNT/Al composite, increase in yield strength and ultimate tensile strength was estimated about 58% and 62%, respectively. However, in case of 1.0 wt.% Cu-coated CNT/Al composite, yield strength and ultimate tensile strength were increased significantly about 121% and 107%, respectively.  相似文献

The macroscopic corrosion phenomenon of the CNTs reinforced Mg composites remarkably occurred in the moist environment, due to a large potential of the galvanic cells formed between α-Mg matrix and CNTs. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the potential difference at their interfaces in order to obstruct the galvanic corrosion phenomenon. In this study, AZ61B alloy composites reinforced with CNTs (CNT/AZ61B) were fabricated by powder metallurgy method, and their potential differences between CNTs and the α-Mg matrix were reduced by concentration of Al atoms around CNTs via heat treatment. The potential distribution around CNTs was measured by using scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM). Heat treatment of CNT/AZ61B composites at 823 K for 10 h caused the obvious concentration of Al atoms around CNTs, and resulted in the remarkable decrease of the potential difference at the interface between the α-Mg matrix and CNTs. Additionally, the salt water immersion test results indicated that the corrosion rate of CNTs/AZ61B composite materials after heat treatment was obviously reduced to less than about 30% of the non-treated composite material. Thus, the changes of α-Mg matrix potential by concentrating Al atoms around CNTs was effective to improve initial galvanic corrosion resistance of CNTs reinforced Mg composites.  相似文献

The magnesium matrix composites reinforced with three volume fractions (3, 5 and 10 vol.%) of submicron-SiC particles (∼0.5 μm) were fabricated by semisolid stirring assisted ultrasonic vibration method. With increasing the volume fraction of the submicron SiC particles (SiCp), the grain size of matrix in the SiCp/AZ31B composites was gradually decreased. Most of the submicron SiC particles exhibited homogeneous distribution in the SiCp/AZ31B composites. The ultimate tensile strength and yield strength of the 10 vol.% SiCp/AZ31B composites were simultaneously improved. The study of interface between the submicron SiCp and the matrix in the SiCp/AZ31B composite suggested that submicron SiCp bonded well with the matrix without interfacial activity.  相似文献

Aluminum matrix composites reinforced by different contents of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were fabricated by friction stir processing (FSP). The microstructure of nano-composites and the interface between aluminum matrix and MWCNTs were examined using optical microscopy (OM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was indicated that MWCNTs were well dispersed in the aluminum matrix throughout the FSP. Tensile tests and microhardness measurement showed that, with the increase of MWCNT content, the tensile strength and microhardness of MWCNTs/Al composites gradually increased, but on the contrary, the elongation decreased. The maximum ultimate tensile strength reached up to 190.2 MPa when 6 vol.% MWCNTs were added, and this value was two times more of that of aluminum matrix. Appearances and fracture surface micrographs of failed composite samples indicated that the composites become more and more brittle with the increase of the MWCNT content.  相似文献

Heat treatment with different parameters were performed on the hot-hydrostatically extruded and swaged 3.5 vol.% TiBw/Ti6Al4V composites tubes. The results indicate that the primary α phase volume fraction decreases and transformed β phase correspondingly increases with increasing solution temperatures. The α + β phases will grow into coarse α phases when the aging temperature is higher than 600 °C. The hardness and ultimate tensile strength of the as-swaged TiBw/Ti6Al4V composite tubes increase with increasing quenching temperatures from 900 to 990 °C, while they decrease with increasing aging temperatures from 550 to 650 °C. A superior combination of ultimate tensile strength (1388 MPa) and elongation (6.1%) has been obtained by quenching at 960 °C and aging at 550 °C for 6 h. High temperature tensile tests at 400–600 °C show that the dominant failure modes at high temperatures also differ from those at room temperature.  相似文献

The cenosphere and precipitator fly ash particulates were used to produce two kinds of aluminum matrix composites with the density of 1.4–1.6 g cm−3 and 2.2–2.4 g cm−3 separately. The electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMSE) properties of the composites were measured in the frequency range of 30.0 kHz–1.5 GHz. The results indicated the EMSE properties of the two types of composites were nearly the same. By using the fly ash particles, the shielding effectiveness properties of the matrix aluminum have been improved in the frequency ranges 30.0 kHz–600.0 MHz and the increment varied with increasing frequency. The EMSE properties of 2024Al are in the range −36.1 ± 0.2 to −46.3 ± 0.3 dB while the composites are in the range −40.0 ± 0.8 to −102.5 ± 0.1 dB in the frequency range 1.0–600.0 MHz. At higher frequency, the EMSE properties of the composites are similar to that of the matrix. The tensile strength of the matrix aluminum has been decreased by addition of the fly ash particulate and the tensile strength of the composites were 110.2 MPa and 180.6 MPa separately. The fractography showed that one composite fractured brittly and the other fractured in a microductile manner.  相似文献

A new manufacturing process for metal matrix composites has been invented, namely accumulative press bonding (APB). The APB process provided an effective method to produce bulk Al/10 vol.% WCp composite using tungsten carbide (WC) powder and AA1050 aluminum sheets as the raw materials. The microstructural evolutions and mechanical properties of the monolithic aluminum and Al/WCp composite during various APB cycles were examined by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, X’pert HighScore software, and tensile test equipment. The results revealed that by increasing the number of APB cycles (a) the uniformity of WC particles in aluminum matrix improved, (b) the porosity of the composite eliminated, (c) the particle free zones decreased and (d) the cluster characteristics improved. Hence, the final Al/WCp composite processed by 14 APB cycles showed a uniform distribution of WCp throughout the aluminum matrix, strong bonding between particles and matrix, and a microstructure without any porosity and undesirable phases. The X-ray diffraction results also showed that nanostructured Al/WCp composite with the average crystallite size of 58.4 nm was successfully achieved by employing 14 cycles of APB technique. The tensile strength of the composites enhanced by increasing the number of APB cycles, and reached to a maximum value of 216 MPa at the end of 14th cycle, which is 2.45 and 1.2 times higher than obtained values for annealed (raw material, 88 MPa) and 14 cycles APBed monolithic aluminum (180 MPa), respectively. Though the elongation of Al/WCp composite lessened during the initial cycles of APB process, it increased at the final cycles of the mentioned process by 78%. Role of WC particles, uniformity of reinforcement, porosity, bonding quality of the reinforcement and matrix, grain refinement, and strain hardening were considered as the strengthening mechanisms in the manufactured composites.  相似文献

Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) reinforced carbon matrix (MWNT/C) composites have been explored using mesophase pitch as carbon matrix precursor in the present work. Results show that carbon nanotubes (CNTs)can enhance the mechanical properties of carbon matrix significantly. The maximal increment of the bending strength and stiffness of the composites, compared with the carbon matrix, are 147% and 400%, respectively. Whereas the highest in-plane thermal conductivity of the composites is 86 W m 1 K 1 which much lower than that of carbon matrix (253 W m 1 K 1).At the same time the electrical resistivity of the composites is much higher than that of matrix. It is implicated that CNTs seem to play the role of thermal/electrical barrier in the composites. FSEM micrograph of the fracture surface for the composites shows that the presence of CNTs restrains the crystallite growth of carbon matrix, which is one of factors that improve mechanical properties and decrease the conductive properties of the composites. The defects and curved shape of CNTs are also the affecting factors on the conductive properties of the composites.  相似文献

NiFe-CNT and Ni3Fe-CNT nanocomposites were fabricated by high energy mechanical alloying method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy were employed for evolution of phase composition, morphology and microstructure of the powder particles. Ball milled powders were heat treated at 500 °C for 1 h to release the milling induced stresses. Bulk samples were prepared by sintering of cold pressed (300 MPa) samples at 1040 °C for 1 h. XRD patterns of powders, as-milled and after annealing at 500 °C did not show any peak related to CNTs or excess phases due to the interaction between CNTs and matrix. SEM micrographs showed that the addition of CNTs caused a reduction of powder particles size. The hardness value of as-milled NiFe and Ni3Fe powders reach to 660 and 720 HV, respectively. According to optical microscopy evaluations, the amount and size of the porosities of the composites bulk samples decreased in comparison with matrix ones.  相似文献

In situ TiB2 particulate reinforced near eutectic Al–Si alloy composites fabricated by the melt reaction composing (MRC) methods have been investigated. It has been shown that minute TiB2 particles (less than 1 μm) uniformly distribute in the eutectic structure and they are interlaced with the coralline-like eutectic Si, while there are very few TiB2 particles in α-Al. It has been also shown that in situ TiB2 particles can enhance the tensile strength of the Al–Si alloy matrix. The strengthening effect increases with increasing TiB2 content. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) at room temperature of as-cast 6%TiB2/Al–Si–Mg composite is 296 MPa, that is a 14.7% increase over the matrix, and its elongation at fracture is 5.5%. After heat-treatment (T6), the UTS of the composites reaches 384 MPa. The strengthening mechanism has been discussed.  相似文献

In the present work, we use mechanical alloying (MA) for the first time to generate a homogenous distribution of 2 wt% CNT within Al powders. The effect of milling time (up to 48 h) on the morphological development of the powders and dispersion of CNTs was investigated. The results show that the technique is effective in dispersing the nanotubes within the soft Al matrix which simultaneously protects the nanotubes from damage under the impact of the milling balls. The results can have important implications for the processing of CNT-reinforced metal-matrix composites in general.  相似文献

In the present work, Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloy was aged by non-isothermal cooling aging treatment (CAT). At high initial aging temperature (IAT), the hardness was decreased with the decreased cooling rate. However, when IAT was lower than 180 °C, the hardness was increased with the decreased cooling rate. Conductivity was increased with the decreased cooling rate regardless of IAT. The tensile strength, yield strength and conductivity of Al alloy after (200–100 °C, 80 °C/h) CAT were increased 2.9%, 8.1% and 8.3% than that after T6 treatment, respectively. With an increase of IAT and decrease of cooling rate, the fine GP zone and η′ phase were transformed to be larger η′ and η precipitates. Moreover, continuous η phase at grain boundary was also grown to be individual large precipitates. Cooling aging time was decreased about 90% than that for T6 treatment, indicating cooling aging could improve the mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and production efficiency with less energy consumption.  相似文献

Aluminum matrix composites reinforced with diamond particles were consolidated by spark plasma sintering. Metalloid silicon was added (Al–Si/diamond composites) to investigate the effect. Silicon addition promotes the formation of molten metal during the sintering to facilitate the densification and enhance the interfacial bonding. Meanwhile, the alloying metal matrix precipitates the eutectic-Si on the diamond surfaces acting as the transitional part to protect the improved interface during the cooling stage. The improved interface and precipitating eutectic-Si phase are mutually responsible for the optimized properties of the composites. In this study, for the Al–Si/diamond composite with 55 vol.% diamonds of 75 μm diameter, the thermal conductivity increased from 200 to 412 Wm−1 K−1, and the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) decreased from 8.9 to 7.3 × 10−6 K−1, compared to the Al/diamond composites. Accordingly, the residual plastic strain was 0.10 × 10−3 during the first cycle and rapidly became negligible during the second. Additionally, the measured CTE of the Al–Si/diamond composites was more conform to the Schapery’s model.  相似文献

Mg/HA (10 wt.%, 20 wt.% and 30 wt.%) composites were prepared by pure magnesium and hydroxyapatite (HA) powders using powder metallurgy (PM) method. The microstructure, mechanical property, corrosion and cytotoxicity of these Mg/HA composites were studied, with the bulk pure magnesium as control. The results showed that the main constitutional phases of Mg/HA composites were simply α-Mg and HA. The HA particulates distributed uniformly in Mg matrix for Mg/10HA composite, and few HA clustering occasionally spread over the Mg/20HA composite, whereas severe agglomeration of HA particulates could be seen for Mg/30HA composite. The yield tensile strength of Mg/10HA composite increased compared with that of the as-extruded bulk pure magnesium, yet the yield tensile strength, ultimate tensile strength and ductility of Mg/HA composites decreased with the further increase of HA content. The corrosion rate of Mg/HA composites increased with the increment of HA content. The cytotoxicity tests indicated that Mg/10HA extract showed no toxicity to L-929 cells, whereas Mg/20HA and Mg/30HA composite extracts induced significantly reduced cell viability.  相似文献
