The fatigue crack growth behaviour of short corner cracks in the Aluminium alloy Al 6013-T6 was investigated. The aim was to determine the crack growth rates of small corner cracks at a stress ratio of R = 0.1, R = 0.7 and R = 0.8 and to find a possible way to predict these crack growth rates from fatigue crack growth curves determined for long cracks. Corner cracks were introduced into short crack specimens, similar to M(T) – specimens, at one side of a hole (Ø = 4.8 mm) by cyclic compression (R = 20). The precracks were smaller than 100 μm (notch + precrack). A completely new method was used to cut very small notches (10–50 μm) into the specimens with a focussed ion beam. The results of the fatigue crack growth tests with short corner cracks were compared with the long fatigue crack growth test data. The short cracks grew at ΔK-values below the threshold for long cracks at the same stress ratio. They also grew faster than long cracks at the same ΔK-values and the same stress ratios. A model was created on the basis of constant Kmax-tests with long cracks that gives a good and conservative estimation of the short crack growth rates.  相似文献

The fatigue response of adhesively-bonded pultruded GFRP double-lap joints has been investigated under different environmental conditions. Tests were performed at ?35 °C, 23 °C and 40 °C. A fourth set of fatigue data was collected from tests on preconditioned specimens in warm (40 °C) water. The tests were performed at 40 °C and at 90% relative humidity. Specimens were instrumented with strain and crack gages to record fatigue data. In addition to the SN curves, stiffness fluctuations and crack initiation and propagation during fatigue were monitored. The dominant failure mode was a fiber-tear failure that occurred in the mat layers of the GFRP laminates. In the presence of high humidity, the failure shifted to the adhesive/composite interface. Although the testing temperature was lower than the glass transition temperature of the adhesive, its influence on the fatigue life and fracture behavior of the examined joints was apparent and was aggravated by the presence of humidity.  相似文献

Numerous studies have observed that the fatigue strength of improved welds increases with material yield strength. This paper provides a comprehensive evaluation of published data for high frequency mechanical impact treated welds. In total, 228 experimental results for three weld geometries subject to R = 0.1 axial loading have been reviewed. A design recommendation including one fatigue class increase in strength (about 12.5%) for every 200 MPa increase in static yield strength is proposed and are shown to be conservative with respect to all available data. Special cautions are given for high R-ratio or variable amplitude fatigue and potential alternate failure locations.  相似文献

Duplex stainless steels (DSS) fatigue crack propagation resistance is strongly affected by both microstructure and environment. In this work, environment influence on the fatigue crack propagation in a 22 Cr 5 Ni duplex and in a 25 Cr 7 Ni superduplex stainless steels is investigated considering three different stress ratios (R = Kmin/Kmax = 0.1, 0.5, 0.75). Tests are performed according to ASTM E 647 standard, both in air and under hydrogen charging conditions (0.1 M H2SO4 + 0.01 M KSCN aqueous solution, ?0.9 V/SCE). Crack fracture surfaces are extensively analysed by means of a scanning electron microscope. Furthermore, crack paths are investigated by means of a crack profile analysis performed through a light optical microscope. Nickel coated fracture surface sections obtained for constant ΔK values are considered in order to analyse the loading (R values) and environment influence on fatigue crack paths.  相似文献

Crack-face interference-free mode I and mode II crack-growth data was combined with smooth axial (λ = εxy/εxx = 0) and torsional (λ = ∞) endurance limit data to develop unified crack growth models that incorporate both shear and tensile cracking. The crack growth models incorporated growth from a slip band (including short crack behavior) size crack until the final failure of a long crack, and the ability to switch between crack growth on shear planes to growth on tensile planes. The models successfully predicted smooth specimen crack-face interference-free fatigue lives and gave reasonable estimates of the smooth specimen endurance limits of crack-face interference free tubular tests run at intermediate strain ratios (λ = 3/4, 3/2, and 3). The series of Kitigawa–Takahashi (threshold fatigue) diagrams developed from the models help illustrate the competition between shear and tensile cracking at the fatigue limit under crack-face interference-free crack growth.  相似文献

This paper is focused on the VHCF behavior of aeronautical titanium alloy under tensile and torsion fatigue loadings. Tensile tests were carried out with two different stress ratios: R = −1 and R = 0.1. Both surface and subsurface crack initiations were observed. In the case of subsurface crack initiation several fatigue life controlling mechanisms of crack initiation were found under fully-reversed loading conditions: initiation from (1) strong defects; (2) ‘macro-zone’ borders; (3) quasi-smooth facets and (4) smooth facets. Tests with stress ratio R = 0.1, have shown that initiation from the borders of ‘macro-zones’ becomes the dominant crack initiation mechanism in presence of positive mean stress. Like for the tensile results, surface and subsurface crack initiations were observed under ultrasonic torsion in spite of the maximum shear stress location on the specimen surface. But the real reason for the subsurface crack initiation under torsion was not found.  相似文献

Fatigue life prediction for a dumbbell cylindrical natural rubber component under uniaxial tensile loading conditions was performed based on the Thomas fatigue crack growth model for relaxing (R = 0) load cycles and the MarsFatemi model for non-relaxing (R > 0) load cycles. By using a self-written program, we proposed a new approach to establish the relation between the power law exponent F and the R ratio in the MarsFatemi model. The approach is based on rubber fatigue life (SN) data rather than crack growth rate and tearing energy (da/dNT) data, avoiding certain difficulties often encountered using the crack growth method. The results indicate that the relation between F and R is a quadratic or cubic function over the range 0 < R < 0.3. Finally, the quantitative effect of initial crack size on fatigue life was studied. We found that the inferred mean size of crack precursors in the rubber component is around 30–40 μm under both relaxing and non-relaxing loading conditions, and the fluctuation of fatigue life is due to the inhomogeneity of crack precursor size except the factors such as unavoidable variations in testing conditions and specimen variations. The good agreement of inferred crack precursor sizes from different R ratio loading conditions is a strong indication that the Mars–Fatemi model provides a proper accounting for the effects of strain crystallization, and it confirms yet again the understanding that nucleated cracks originate from similarly sized precursors in both relaxing and non-relaxing fatigue experiments.  相似文献

Fatigue properties of 2024-T351 aluminium alloy are investigated in the high cycle fatigue (HCF) and very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) regime. Endurance tests are performed with ultrasonic equipment at 20 kHz cycling frequency at load ratios of R = −1, R = 0.1 and R = 0.5 up to 1010 cycles. Additional servo-hydraulic tests between 8 and 10 Hz at R = 0.1 show no frequency influence on fatigue lifetimes. Linear lines in double logarithmic SN plots are used to approximate data. Slope exponents of approximation lines increase with increasing numbers of cycles for all load ratios. Failures above 5 × 109 cycles (R = −1 and R = 0.1) or 1010 cycles (R = 0.5) occur, and no fatigue limit is found. Fatigue cracks leading to failures above 109 cycles are initiated at the surface or slightly below at broken constituent particles or at agglomerations of fractured particles, which are probably Al7Cu2(Fe, Mn). Specimens stressed with more than 1010 cycles at R = −1 without failure show several cracks starting at constituent particles. Maximum crack lengths are 30 μm, which is considerably below grain size.  相似文献

The ball eye (BE) is a key connecting component between the insulator and transmission tower, whose fatigue characteristics concern the safety of transmission lines. To understand the fatigue mechanism and characteristics of it, the fatigue test was conducted based on the following data: r = 0.25, S = 500 MPa,then plotting of SN and Δεaxis  N, to analyze the fatigue failure of the test specimen from the macro and micro point of views. The research results show that: the life of BE significantly reduces with the increase of the stress amplitude, but the relative reduction in life is not the same; softening and strain amplitude of the specimen change differently before and after the stress amplitude of 300 MPa; when S  300 MPa, the fracture is more smooth, the fatigue crack propagation is slow; when S > 300 MPa, the rate of fatigue crack growth is faster, and the fatigue crack growth zones are not obvious. The cracks are easily detectable appear at the joint of the BE and insulator cap, and the cracks along the fracture cross section are constantly expanding, showing multiple fatigue sources and fatigue steps. The number of fatigue steps increases as the magnitude of the tensile stress increases. When S = 500 MPa, the yield strength decreases during the lifetime, the decrease rate of the tensile strength and microstructure strength in each stage are different. Axial lengthening and section shrinkage ratio decrease with the development of fatigue, fatigue evolution process is accompanied by phenomenon of crystalline slip, deformation, dislocation, at the same time, dissipation and decomposition of pearlite occur, and carbide precipitates from the matrix, growing and moving to the grain boundaries, the specific phenomenon of grain growth appears.  相似文献

Effect of stress ratio on fatigue properties of a titanium alloy (TC-17) in the high cycle fatigue (HCF) and very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) were investigated by electromagnetic and ultrasonic fatigue testing. The SN curves at R = −1, 0.1, 0.5 and 0.7 at 110 Hz and 20 kHz were obtained and discussed. The effects of frequency on fatigue strength was also investigated. It was concluded that the fatigue strength with 50% fatigue failure probability at R = 0.1, 0.5 and 0.7 is lower to the Goodman line and shows a bilinear decreasing trend. Cleavage fracture of primary grains in the surface and interior initiation zone were observed. The formation of the facets induced by the basal or prismatic slips of the H.C.P grains decreased the fatigue strength with variation in mean stress.  相似文献

Powder metallurgy processing of steels typically results in materials characterized by residual porosity, whose sizes and morphology, together with the microstructure, strongly affect the fatigue crack growth behaviour of the materials.Prismatic specimens were pressed at 7.0 g/cm3 density from Astaloy CrM powder and sintered under different conditions, varying the sintering temperature and the cooling rate after sintering.Optical observations allowed us to evaluate the sizes and the morphology of the porosity and the microstructural characteristics for all the investigated conditions. Fatigue tests were performed at R-ratio equal to 0.1 to investigate the threshold zone and to calculate the coefficients of the Paris law. All the tests were carried out according to the compliance method, and the crack length was evaluated during the tests. Moreover, KIC tests were performed in order to complete the investigation. On both fatigue and KIC samples, a fractographic analysis was carried out to investigate the crack path and the fracture surface features. The results show that the exponent of the Paris law is about 6.0 for 1120 °C sintered and about 4.7 for 1250 °C sintered materials. Interesting data have been also found for the threshold values.  相似文献

Crack growth behavior of aluminum alloy 7075-T6 was investigated under in-plane biaxial tension–tension fatigue with stress ratio of 0.5. Two biaxiality ratios, λ (=1 and 1.5) were used. Cruciform specimens with a center hole, having a notch at 45° to the specimen’s arms, were tested in a biaxial fatigue test machine. Crack initiated and propagated coplanar with the notch for λ = 1 in LT orientation, while it was non-coplanar for λ = 1.5 between LT and TL orientations. Uniaxial fatigue crack growth tests in LT and TL orientations were also conducted. Crack growth rate in region II was practically the same for biaxial fatigue with λ = 1 in LT orientation and for the uniaxial fatigue in LT or TL orientations, while it was faster for biaxial fatigue with λ = 1.5 at a given crack driving force. However, fatigue damage mechanisms were quite different in each case. In region I, crack driving force at a given crack growth rate was smallest for biaxial fatigue with λ = 1.5 and for uniaxial fatigue in TL orientation, followed by biaxial fatigue with λ = 1 and uniaxial fatigue in LT orientation in ascending order at a given crack growth rate.  相似文献

Investigations are presented in this paper on quenched and tempered steel 42CrMoS4 from two batches, with two different tensile strengths (Rm = 1100 MPa, 1350 MPa) but with similar microstructure, and a nodular cast iron EN-GJS-900-2 (Rm = 930 MPa). Fatigue tests with smooth (Kt = 1) and notched (Kt = 1.75) specimens were performed at R = −1 and R = 0 up to the number of cycles N = 2·109 in order to determine the fatigue strength behaviour and failure mechanisms, especially in the VHCF-region. Failure in smooth specimens often initiated at material defects such as oxides in the quenched and tempered steel and shrinkage holes in the nodular cast iron. Firstly, a fatigue strength analysis was performed that did not consider these defects. A possibility of analysis of experimental data including VHCF-results has been discussed. Next, a linear elastic fracture mechanics analysis was performed in order to describe the defect behaviour, assuming that the defects act like cracks. The results showed that there are lower limit or threshold values of the stress intensity factor range ΔK for crack propagation in both materials. Analysis of defects and defect distribution in run-out specimens confirmed this conclusion. From the comparison of the results with an SN curve from the design code FKM-Guideline Analytical strength assessment of components, recommendations for design and assessment of components have been derived.  相似文献

This study aims to investigate the cause of failure of an 845 mm external diameter reducing gear that operated during 30 months in a petrochemical plant. The failure analysis procedure included material characterisation (microstructure, chemical composition and microhardness), fracture surface evaluation, and stress distribution by finite elements on critical regions of the gear. Fracture mechanics and fatigue crack growth were also used to develop a da/dN–ΔK curve and then determine the gear material crack growth resistance. Results indicate that the gear was not properly manufactured and failure occurred as a result of a fatigue process facilitated by a manufacturing defect.  相似文献

A new phenomenological fatigue crack growth formulation for the modeling and the prediction of the Mode I fatigue behavior of adhesively-bonded pultruded glass fiber-reinforced polymer double cantilever beam joints under different R-ratios is introduced. The established formulation is based on the total fatigue life concept, considering however the model parameters as functions of the R-ratio by fitting the existing experimental data under two to three different R-ratios. This model can subsequently be used for the derivation of fatigue crack growth curves under any different R-ratio, thus assisting the development of methodologies for the fatigue life prediction of a joint comprising adherends with the same material under realistic loading conditions. An extensive fatigue/fracture database has been derived, containing results of 28 Mode I fatigue experiments, to assist the model development and to validate its predictions. Comparison of the model predictions and experimental results proved the model’s validity.  相似文献

The influence of stress triaxiality and Lode parameter on microvoid growth phase of ductile fracture under ultra-low cycle fatigue (ULCF) (Nf < 100, Nf = cycles to failure) loading is investigated using micromechanical analyses. A new micromechanical cyclic void growth model (MM-CVGM) to predict the ULCF life of ASTM A992 steels is presented. The MM-CVGM is calibrated and validated from the experiments conducted on axisymmetrically notched specimens. Number of cycles to failure (Nf) and the fracture initiation locations predicted by the model closely matched the experimental observations.  相似文献

In this study, the fatigue behavior of aluminum alloy 2024T3 v-notched specimens repaired with composite patch under block loading was analyzed experimentally. Two loading blocks were applied: increasing and decreasing at two stress ratio: R = 0 and R = 0.1. Failed samples were examined under scanning electron microscope at different magnifications to analyze their fractured surfaces. The obtained results show that under increasing blocks, the crack growth is accelerated for both repaired and unrepaired specimens. This is attributed to the increase of the loading amplitude in the second block. A retardation effect was observed for decreasing blocks loading in unrepaired specimens. However, this retardation effect is attenuated by the presence of the patch which lead to lower fatigue life for repaired specimens.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to examine the corrosion fatigue behavior of filament wound composite pipes with a surface crack under alternating internal pressure. The filament wound pipes are composed of multi-layered E-glass/epoxy composites with a [±75°]3 lay-up. The surface notches were formed on the outer surface of the pipe along the pipe axis. Dilute (0.6 M) HCl acid was applied to the surface crack region by a corrosion cell mounted on the outer surface of the pipe. The results of an experimental investigation into the corrosion fatigue tests are conducted to observe the oil leakage failure and the crack propagation of the composite pipe subjected internal pressure loading with an open ended condition in which the pipe can be deformed freely in the axial direction. The internal pressure was generated by conventional hydraulic oil for fatigue loading. The fatigue tests are performed at 0.42 Hz frequency and a stress ratio of R = 0.05 in accordance with ASTM D-2992 standard. The oil leakage from the crack tip was observed after the crack propagation reached to the critical stress intensity level. The fatigue crack propagation behavior with the environment exposure was strongly dependent on the crack parameters such as crack-depth ratio and crack-aspect ratio. The micro structure of the fracture surface with the effect of environment and the fatigue loading were also observed.  相似文献

Cyclic torsion fatigue tests with superimposed static torsion loads are performed with VDSiCr spring steel with shot-peened surface in the high cycle fatigue (HCF) and very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) regime. Fatigue properties are investigated at load ratios R = 0.1, R = 0.35 and R = 0.5 up to limiting lifetimes of 5 × 109 cycles with a newly developed ultrasonic torsion testing method. Increasing the load ratio reduces the shear stress amplitude that the material can withstand without failure. Fatigue cracks are initiated at the surface in the HCF regime. In the VHCF regime, cracks are preferentially initiated internally in the matrix, below the surface layer with compression residual stresses, and less frequently at the surface. Cyclic and mean shear stresses with 50% survival probability in the VHCF regime are presented in a Haigh diagram. Linear line approximation delivers a mean stress sensitivity of M = 0.33 for load ratios between R = −1 and R = 0.5.  相似文献

In the paper, the results of crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) and crack opening displacement (COD) in place of crack initiation as well as the fatigue crack growth rate in higher strength steel are presented. The investigation were carried out on flat specimens with central notch under constant amplitude tensile fatigue loading at stress ratio R = 0.2 and different value of the stress σmax. The test results showed that with growth of crack length l grew values of the CTOD and COD. In the work, it was proposed calculation of the CTOD value on basis various dependence of plastic zone radius on crack tip.  相似文献
