When Enterococcus faecalis is isolated from fresh feces, its host range appears to be limited to humans and birds. Although E. faecalis is found in human sewage, the extent to which the bacterium is found in broiler litter and in the feces of wild birds is unclear. These results have implications for bacterial source tracking. We determined if media designed for the isolation of fecal enterococci affected this host range, and if E. faecalis was routinely found in broiler litter and in the feces of wild birds. Of five different isolation media, none affected the isolation of E. faecalis. Enterococcus faecalis was routinely found in fresh broiler feces (522 of 1092 isolates; 48%), but rarely in broiler litter (12 of 1452 isolates; <2%). Therefore, broiler litter selects against this bacterium, and broiler litter is an unlikely environmental source of this bacterium. The presence of E. faecalis in eight wild bird species was highly variable. Unless the fecal loading rate from migratory or resident wild birds is high, water samples collected during baseflow conditions with high numbers of E. faecalis may indicate human fecal contamination.  相似文献

Use of antibiotics as feed additives in poultry production has been linked to the presence of antibiotic resistant bacteria in farm workers, consumer poultry products and the environs of confined poultry operations. There are concerns that these resistant bacteria may be transferred to communities near these operations; however, environmental pathways of exposure are not well documented. We assessed the prevalence of antibiotic resistant enterococci and staphylococci in stored poultry litter and flies collected near broiler chicken houses. Drug resistant enterococci and staphylococci were isolated from flies caught near confined poultry feeding operations in the summer of 2006. Susceptibility testing was conducted on isolates using antibiotics selected on the basis of their importance to human medicine and use in poultry production. Resistant isolates were then screened for genetic determinants of antibiotic resistance. A total of 142 enterococcal isolates and 144 staphylococcal isolates from both fly and poultry litter samples were identified. Resistance genes erm(B), erm(A), msr(C), msr(A/B) and mobile genetic elements associated with the conjugative transposon Tn916, were found in isolates recovered from both poultry litter and flies. Erm(B) was the most common resistance gene in enterococci, while erm(A) was the most common in staphylococci. We report that flies collected near broiler poultry operations may be involved in the spread of drug resistant bacteria from these operations and may increase the potential for human exposure to drug resistant bacteria.  相似文献

Cadmium may act like an estrogen and be a potential risk factor for estrogen-related diseases such as breast cancer and endometriosis. Here, we tested the hypothesis that higher cadmium exposure is associated with endometriosis among infertile Japanese women in a hospital-based case-control study. We recruited consecutive female patients aged 20-45 years who had complained of infertility and presented to a university hospital in Tokyo. The subjects were interviewed and provided a urine sample prior to a laparoscopic diagnosis of endometriosis between January 2000 and December 2001. The severity of endometriosis was then dichotomized into controls (stage 0 and I) and cases (stage II-IV). We finally measured urinary total cadmium concentration in 54 cases and 74 controls as a biomarker of long-term cumulative exposure. Odds ratios were adjusted for average menstrual cycle length, body-mass index and smoking status using unconditional logistic regression. Results showed no association between endometriosis and urinary cadmium concentration. Medians (interquartile ranges) of urinary cadmium concentration in cases and controls were 0.53 (0.40-0.73) and 0.54 (0.34-0.76) microg/g creatinine, respectively (P for difference=0.88). Adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for the highest versus lowest tertile of urinary creatinine-adjusted cadmium concentration was 0.86 (0.30 to 2.49, P for trend=0.79). Our results do not support the hypothesis that higher urinary cadmium concentration is associated with the risk of endometriosis.  相似文献

Information on the effects of inter-annual variations in climatic factors on fecal coliform levels in coastal waters is scarce. We used 11 years (1990–2001) of rainfall, water temperature, Pearl River stage and salinity data to assess the effects of the 1991–1992 and 1997–1998 El Niño events on fecal coliform levels in Mississippi Sound. El Niño-Southern Oscillation had major effects on Pearl River stage and water quality in the Sound. The geometric mean fecal coliform number differed among years (P=0.0001), being highest during 1991–1992 El Niño years (14.22 MPN per 100 ml) and lowest during 1999–2000 La Niña years (<1.8 MPN per 100 ml). Mean salinity varied among years (P=0.0001) from 9 ppt (1991–1992) to 21 ppt (1999–2000). Mean water temperature was lowest in 1997–1998 (14.5 °C) and highest in 1998–2000 (19.4 °C). Pearl River stage differed among years (P=0.0001), ranging from 1.96 m (1999–2000) to 3.57 m (1997–1998). Inverse relationships were observed between fecal coliform levels and salinity (r2=0.74; P=0.001) and water temperature (r2=0.69; P=0.001), whereas positive relationships were obtained with total rainfall (r2=0.52; P=0.013) and Pearl River stage (r2=0.90; P=0.0001). These relationships are useful for evaluating the potential effects of climate change on water quality and classification of shellfish growing waters in order to protect humans from consuming contaminated shellfish in shallow river-influenced estuaries.  相似文献

The spatial and temporal distributions of indicator bacteria in a small, multiple-use source drinking water reservoir in Southern California, USA were quantified over the period August 2001-July 2002. High levels of total and fecal coliform bacteria were present in Canyon Lake (annual geometric mean concentrations+/-SEM of 3.93+/-0.02 and 3.02+/-0.03 log cfu/100mL, respectively), while comparatively low levels of enterococci and E. coli were found (1.16+/-0.02 log cfu/100mL and 0.30+/-0.03 log MPN/100mL, respectively). As a result, these different indicator bacteria yielded quite divergent indices of water quality, with 72.1% of all surface samples (n=294) exceeding the USEPA single-sample limit of 400 cfu/100mL fecal coliform bacteria, while none (0%) of the samples exceeded the single-sample limit for E. coli (n=194). Regression analyses found a positive correlation between total and fecal coliform bacteria (R=0.50, significant at p<0.001) and between enterococci and E. coli (R=0.51, significant at p<0.001), but no correlation or inverse correlations were found between coliform concentrations and enterococci and E. coli levels. External sources responsible for the high total and fecal coliform bacteria were not identified, although laboratory studies demonstrated growth of the coliform bacteria in lake water samples. Enterococci and E. coli were not observed to grow, however. Bacteria concentrations varied relatively little laterally across the lake, although strong vertical gradients in fecal coliform and enterococcus bacteria concentrations were present during summer stratification, with concentrations about 10x higher above the thermocline when compared with surface concentrations. In contrast, total bacteria, total virus and total coliform bacteria levels were unchanged with depth. Seasonal trends in bacteria concentrations were also present. This study shows that the choice of indicator bacteria and sampling depth can both strongly affect the apparent microbial water quality of a lake or reservoir.  相似文献

The application of poultry litter to agricultural fields can provide plant nutrients for crops and forage production, but fecal bacteria and the sex hormones estradiol and testosterone are components of litter that can be detrimental to the environment. Our objective was to determine if applications of poultry litter to small watersheds would contribute to the load of fecal bacteria and sex hormones to soil and runoff. We, therefore, investigated the fate and transport of fecal bacteria, estradiol and testosterone from surface applied poultry litter to four small cropped watersheds. Poultry litter was applied to meet the nitrogen requirements of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.) in 2000 and grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] in 2001. Neither Salmonella nor Campylobacter were detected in the litter but the fecal indicator bacteria were. The average load of total coliforms, Escherichia coli, and fecal enterococci applied with the litter was 12.2, 11.9, and 12.7 log(10) cells ha(-1), respectively. The average load of estradiol and testosterone was 3.1 and 0.09 mg ha(-1), respectively. Runoff events first occurred 7 months after the first litter application in 2000, and 3 weeks after the second application in 2001. Only for the 25 July 2001 runoff event 3 weeks after the second litter application were the concentrations of total coliforms, E. coli, and fecal enterococci in runoff greater than background concentrations which were on average 5.2, 2.9, and 1.1 log(10) MPN 100 ml(-1), respectively. Average background levels of total coliforms, fecal enterococci, and E. coli in surface soil were 8.2, 7.9, and 3.5 log(10) cells kg(-1) soil. At the rate of litter application the concentrations of estradiol and testosterone in the litter did not appear to impact the background levels in the soil and runoff. Because concentrations of sex hormones in litter from other broiler operations are known to be greater than in the litter we applied, further study on the connection between concentrations of sex hormones in poultry litter and operational practices is recommended.  相似文献

Lead is pervasive environmental pollutant with potential public health hazard as a contaminant of food from animal origin. The present study examines the blood and milk lead level in animals reared in areas around different industrial activities and to find out correlation between blood and milk lead levels in lactating cows. Blood and milk samples (n = 149) were collected from animals reared around steel processing unit (n = 22), lead-zinc smelter (n = 21), aluminum processing plant (n = 25), rock phosphate mining area cum phosphate fertilizer plant (n = 21), coal mining areas (n = 46) and closed lead but functional zinc smelter (n = 14). Samples were also collected from randomly chosen 52 lactating cows reared in non-polluted areas to serve as controls. Significantly (P < 0.05) higher blood lead level was recorded in animals reared around lead-zinc smelting factories followed by closed lead but functional zinc smelter, aluminum processing unit and steel manufacturing plant, as compared to values recorded for control animals. The highest milk lead level (0.84 +/- 0.11 microg/ ml) was detected in animals reared in the vicinity of lead-zinc smelting unit followed by aluminum processing plant and steel processing unit. Analysis of correlation between blood lead levels and lead excretion in milk through sorting the blood lead values into 9 different ranges irrespective of site of collection of samples (n = 201) revealed significant correlation (r = 0.469 at P < 0.01) between blood and milk lead concentrations. The lactating cows with blood lead levels above 0.20 microg/ml (groups 5-9) had significantly (P < 0.05) higher milk lead excretion than those with blood lead levels from non detectable to 0.20 microg/ml (groups 1-4). Pearson correlation analysis between blood and milk lead concentrations in 122 animals with blood lead <0.20 microg/ml showed non-significant correlation (r = 0.030 at P < 0.05) but a significant correlation was observed between these two parameters with blood lead level above >0.02 microg/ml indicating that the excretion of lead through milk increases with the increased in blood lead level above 0.20 microg/ml.  相似文献

The present investigation was carried out to assess the trace mineral profile of milk from lactating cows reared around different industrial units and to examine the effect of blood and milk concentration of lead and cadmium on copper, cobalt, zinc and iron levels in milk. Respective blood and milk samples were collected from a total of 201 apparently healthy lactating cows above 3 years of age including 52 cows reared in areas supposed to be free from pollution. The highest milk lead (0.85 ± 0.11 µg/ml) and cadmium (0.23 ± 0.02 µg/ml) levels were recorded in lactating cows reared around lead–zinc smelter and steel manufacturing plant, respectively. Significantly (P < 0.05) higher concentration of milk copper, cobalt, zinc and iron compared to control animals was recorded in cows around closed lead cum operational zinc smelter. Analysis of correlation between lead and other trace elements in milk from lactating cows with the blood lead level > 0.20 µg/ml (n = 79) revealed a significant negative correlations between milk iron and milk lead (r = − 0.273, P = 0.015). However, such trend was not recorded with blood lead level < 0.20 µg/ml (n = 122). The milk cobalt concentration was significantly correlated (r = 0.365, P < 0.001) with cadmium level in milk and the highest milk cadmium (> 0.10 to 0.39 µg/ml) group had significantly (P < 0.05) increased milk cobalt. It is concluded that increased blood and milk lead or cadmium level as a result of natural exposure of lactating cows to these environmental toxicants significantly influences trace minerals composition of milk and such alterations affect the milk quality and nutritional values.  相似文献

Case-control study of toenail cadmium and prostate cancer risk in Italy   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A role of cadmium exposure in prostate cancer etiology has been suggested by epidemiologic and laboratory studies, but conclusive evidence on this topic is still lacking. We investigated the relation between cadmium exposure, estimated by determining toenails cadmium levels, and prostate cancer risk in forty patients newly diagnosed with prostate cancer and fifty-eight hospital controls recruited in two provinces from southern and northern Italy. We found an excess cancer risk in subjects in the third and fourth (highest) quartiles of toenail cadmium concentration (odds ratio 1.3 and 4.7, respectively) compared with subjects in the bottom quartile. Results were basically unchanged when limiting the analysis to each province or entering toenail cadmium concentrations as continuous values in the regression model (P=0.004). Despite the limited statistical stability of the point estimates, these findings appear to support the hypothesis that cadmium exposure increases prostate cancer risk.  相似文献

In this study, 12 catchments sites located along the north coast of New South Wales in Australia were grouped into the four categories of septic, cattle, sewage treatment plant (STP) and forested sites via cluster analysis based on their land use patterns. Water samples from all these sites were collected between October 2004 and June 2006 at a regular monthly interval and within 48 h of rain events. The samples were analyzed for bacterial counts including faecal coliform and total coliform; faecal sterols including coprostanol, epicoprostanol, cholesterol, cholestanol, 24-ethylcoprostanol, campesterol, stigmasterol and beta-sitosterol; and the elements including Na, Rb, Sr, Ag, Cd, Sn, Cs, Ba, Hg, Tl, Pb, Bi, U, Mg, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, K, As, Se, P and Mo. Over the course of the sampling period, the STP site had the highest average coprostanol level of 1693+/-567 ng/L which was significantly higher (p<0.05) than the septic sites (190+/-71 ng/L), the cattle sites (163+/-94 ng/L) and forested sites (14+/-4 ng/L). As expected, the forested sites had significantly lower average level of faecal coliforms (373+/-87 cfu/100 mL) compared with the STP (1395+/-574 cfu/100 mL), septic (1243+/-494 cfu/100 mL) and cattle sites (535+/-112 cfu/100 mL). The concentrations of coprostanol were not correlated with the numbers of faecal coliform bacteria when the entire data set was evaluated. The forested sites generally had the lowest average levels of elemental compositions, with significantly lower levels noted for Na, U, Mg, V, Cu, Sr, K, As, P and Mo, whereas Fe was the only element notably higher in the forested sites. Temporal and rain events analyses of the data set revealed that elevated levels of both coprostanol and faecal coliforms were not exclusive to rain events. The average coprostanol levels in rain event samples at each site were not significantly different compared with the corresponding dry event samples. Conversely, faecal coliform numbers increased by 2-4 times in rain events samples from septic, cattle and forested sites, but did not alter in the STP site. Multivariate analyses identified coprostanol and Sr as major contributing factors for the discrimination of septic, cattle, STP and forested sites for both rain and dry events samples. It was clear that each land use type of catchment could be characterized by biochemical, bacteriological and elemental parameters.  相似文献

The occurrence of coliforms in drinking water distribution systems may be explained by (i) inadequate water treatment, (ii) post-treatment contamination, or (iii) coliform growth in the network. In order to confirm the third hypothesis, a 24 h-starved dense suspension of Escherichia coli was injected into an experimental water distribution system. Results from this experiment clearly indicate that E. coli may find ecological conditions in drinking water distribution systems which will allow growth, particularly in the biofilm phase. Chlorination is an appropriate tool to limit coliform much more easily than the total heterotrophic bacterial biomass. However, in all cases, biofilm associated bacteria are more difficult to kill than suspended bacteria, because of chlorine consumption by the pipe material, and because of a diffusion-limited reaction between chlorine and the biofilm.  相似文献

Water pollution by microorganisms of fecal origin is a current world-wide public health concern. Total coliforms, fecal coliforms (Escherichia coli) and enterococci are indicators commonly used to assess the microbiological safety of water resources. In this study, influent water samples and treated water were collected seasonally from a water treatment plant and two major water wells in a Black Belt county of Alabama and evaluated for water quality indicator bacteria. Influent river water samples serving the treatment plant were positive for total coliforms, fecal coliforms (E. coli), and enterococci. The highest number of total coliform most probable number (MPN) was observed in the winter (847.5 MPN/100 mL) and the lowest number in the summer (385.6 MPN/100 mL). Similarly E. coli MPN was substantially higher in the winter (62.25 MPN/100 mL). Seasonal variation of E. coli MPN in influent river water samples was strongly correlated with color (R2 = 0.998) and turbidity (R2 = 0.992). Neither E. coli nor other coliform type bacteria were detected in effluent potable water from the treatment plant. The MPN of enterococci was the highest in the fall and the lowest in the winter. Approximately 99.7 and 51.5 enterococci MPN/100 mL were recorded in fall and winter seasons respectively. One-way ANOVA tests revealed significant differences in seasonal variation of total coliforms (P < 0.05), fecal coliforms (P < 0.01) and enterococci (P < 0.01). Treated effluent river water samples and well water samples revealed no enterococci contamination. Representative coliform bacteria selected by differential screening on Coliscan Easygel were identified by 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence analysis. E. coli isolates were sensitive to gentamicin, trimethoprim/sulfamethazole, ciprofloxacin, vancomycin, tetracycline, ampicillin, cefixime, and nitrofurantoin. Nonetheless, isolate BO-54 displayed decreased sensitivity compared to other E. coli isolates. Antibiotic sensitivity pattern can be employed in microbial source tracking.  相似文献

The association of age, smoking, alcohol, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), blood lead (BPb) and cadmium (BCd) levels, and serum levels of copper (SCu), zinc (SZn) and selenium (SSe) with atopic status and ventilatory function was examined in the groups of 166 women and 50 men with no occupational exposure to metals or other xenobiotics. Markers of atopy included serum total IgE, skin prick test (SPT) to common inhalatory allergens, non-specific nasal reactivity (NNR) and non-specific bronchial reactivity (NBR). Parameters of ventilatory function included forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV(1)). Significantly higher BPb, SZn, IgE and prevalence of positive SPT, and lower SCu and NNR was found in men than in women. Fifteen women taking female sex hormones (HT) had significantly higher SCu than women without HT. Regression models showed significant inverse associations between IgE and SCu (P=0.021) and NNR and SCu (P=0.044) in women. When excluding women with HT, the association of SCu and total IgE became of borderline significance (P=0.051), association between SCu and NNR disappeared, and significant positive association between total IgE and BPb emerged (P=0.046). In men, significant inverse association was found between positive SPT and SSe, and between NBR and SSe. A decrease in FVC% and FEV(1)% was associated with an increase in smoking intensity (P<0.001) and a decrease in SZn (P=0.043 and P=0.053, respectively). These results were observed at the levels of the metals comparable to those in general populations worldwide. The observed differences between men and women may partly be explained by different levels of relevant toxic and essential metals, and their combination. The role of female HT in associations of atopy markers and SCu should be further investigated.  相似文献

Steroid hormones can act as potent endocrine disruptors when released into the environment. The main sources of these chemicals are thought to be wastewater treatment plant discharges and waste from animal feeding operations. While these compounds have frequently been found in wastewater effluents, few studies have investigated biosolids or manure, which are routinely land applied, as potential sources. This study assessed the potential environmental contribution of steroid hormones from biosolids and chicken litter. Hormone concentrations in samples of limed biosolids collected at a waste treatment plant over a four year period ranged from < 2.5 to 21.7 ng/g dry weight for estrone (E1) and < 2.5 to 470 ng/g dry weight for progesterone. Chicken litter from 12 mid-Atlantic farms had averages of 41.4 ng/g dry weight E1, 63.4 ng/g dry weight progesterone, and 19.2 ng/g dry weight E1-sulfate (E1-S). Other analytes studied were 17β-estradiol (E2), estriol (E3), 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), testosterone, E2-3-sulfate (E2-3-S), and E2-17-sulfate (E2-17-3).  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: This study is to examine the effect of cadmium exposure on blood pressure in Korean general population. METHODS: The study population consisted of 958 men and 944 women who participated in the 2005 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), in which blood pressure and blood cadmium were measured from each participant. RESULTS: The mean blood cadmium level was 1.67 microg/L (median level 1.55). The prevalence of hypertension was 26.2%. The blood cadmium level was significantly higher among those subjects with hypertension than those without (mean level 1.77 versus 1.64 microg/dL). After adjusting for covariates, the odds ratio of hypertension comparing the highest to the lowest tertile of cadmium in blood was 1.51 (95% confidence interval 1.13 to 2.05), and a dose-response relationship was observed. Systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial blood pressure were all positively associated with blood cadmium level, and this effect of cadmium on blood pressure was markedly stronger when the kidney function was reduced. CONCLUSIONS: Cadmium exposures at the current level may have increased the blood pressure of Korean general population.  相似文献

Raw effluents from meatworks were found to have high levels of bacterial contamination, comparable to those found in domestic sewage. Counts of 4 × 107 ml−1 for total aerobes and 107 ml−1 for total coliforms were obtained. Four effluent treatment processes were examined for effectiveness of removal of bacteria, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and suspended solids (SS). Lagoon and activated sludge systems were the most efficient, followed by physico-chemical treatment and lastly by high-rate trickling filtration. Both the lagoon and activated sludge systems achieved large reductions in total coliform counts, usually by factors of between 103 and 104. The effluents from both these systems nearly met normal discharge requirements for COD and SS, but the bacteriological quality was still poor.  相似文献

The River Main, County Antrim, was intensively monitored during November 1974 to May 1975 to obtain accurate measurements of the loads of nitrogen and phosphorus to compare with loads predicted by a statistical model from discrete sampling and continuous flow data. During the survey period 2-hourly samples were collected on 102 days. Flow data were available from continuous recording of river level. Depending on the prevailing flow conditions 2-hourly or composite 8-hourly samples were analysed for soluble reactive P, soluble unreactive P, total soluble P, particulate P, total P, nitrate N, Kjeldahl N and total N. For the discrete sampling programme grab samples were collected at 8-day intervals and analysed for soluble reactive P, total P and nitrate N.River flow data showed the “flashy” nature of the discharge and flow variation by two orders of magnitude. During intensive monitoring particulate P concentration varied by two orders of magnitude while all other fractions varied by about one order of magnitude. Flow was therefore more important in determining loads for all fractions except particulate P. The concentration of all fractions except soluble unreactive P were significantly related to flow. Loads and flows were generally best related by log load-log flow equations. The slopes of these equations indicated that soluble reactive P and nitrate N sources were diluted by low concentration water at high flows whereas particulate P sources increased at high flows due to erosion and surface run-off.Using log load-log flow equations developed from the discrete 8-day sampling data, loads were predicted and compared with loads for the same days as were intensively sampled. The predictive method based on discrete sampling overestimated soluble reactive P and nitrate N loads by 12 and 18% respectively but underestimated particulate P load by 43%. The error in predicted loads was due to discrete sampling frequencies being biased towards low flow conditions which prevail for the greatest proportion of the time. Since soluble reactive P and nitrate N concentrations decreased with increasing flow, predicted loads were therefore too high. The converse was true for particulate P whose concentration increased markedly with increased flow.Instead of designing a sampling programme based on a rigid time period between samples, it should be possible using river flow history for the months of the year to select sampling frequencies which would more closely approximate to flow-proportional sampling. For example, fixed-period 8-day sampling of the major rivers entering Lough Neagh might be replaced by monthly sampling in June, July and August, fortnightly sampling in April, May and September, and sampling every 5 days for the other 6 months.  相似文献

The different use of P-resources between two sites in the deep oligotrophic Traunsee was studied by seasonal and vertical patterns of phytoplankton and nutrients from 12/1997 to 10/1998. The P-resources were evaluated from the proportion between the P-fractions, the dissolved reactive P (DRP), dissolved non-reactive P (DOP) and particulate organic P (PP) and from the stoichiometry between nutrients, the total N (TN), the total P (TP) and soluble reactive Si (SRSi). Significant differences between an inshore site impacted by industrial tailings (Ebensee Bay, EB) and an open water reference site (Viechtau, VI) were evident from vertical profiles of both the P-accumulation (%PP of TP) evaluated by DRP:DOP:PP and the distribution of phytoplankton assessed by Si-exhaustion (TN:TP:SRSi), but not from the seasonal patterns of phytoplankton composition, S:V ratios of the algal community or surface layer nutrient dynamics. Low TP and the stable stratification from May to September triggered the relative accumulation of epilimnetic P at VI as it was evident from both the higher portion of particulate P within TP (%PP of TP) and from the shift towards P-enrichment in nutrient stoichiometry of TN:TP:SRSi. The predominance of around 55-52% algal carbon over bacteria at the surface layer to 20m coincided spatially with the lowest Si content relative to N and P. The disturbances at the impacted site was summarised by: up to 11% less P accumulation by organisms at the surface, no stoichiometric shift towards TP in the epilimnion when compared with deeper layers and a reduction of the trophogenic zone to the top 10m. Reasons for this disturbance are seen in the unstable stratification, turbidity, higher TP and the metazoan dominated food chain. Both triple ratios, DRP:DOP:PP and TN:TP:SRSi, were sensitive indicators of the use of P-resources by plankton communities, while inorganic dissolved fractions (DIN:DRP:SRSi, DIN = dissolved inorganic N) provided only insufficient information on nutrient resources in Traunsee.  相似文献

An investigation of the tidal factors controlling the abundance and distribution of coliform bacteria in the sediments of two intertidal sites in the River Mersey (U.K.) was made during 1976. Samples were collected, at approximately weekly intervals, from September to December. Counts of the total coliform, faecal coliform and E. coli type I, were made in order to relate the numbers of bacteria to the salinity conditions of the tidal waters covering the sites. The Greenland marine food chains contain high levels of cadmium, mercury and selenium. Concentrations of cadmium in the kidney of ringed seals (Phoca hispida) from the municipalities of Qaanaaq and Upernavik (Northwest Greenland) are among the highest recorded in the Arctic. The purpose of the study was to determine whether cadmium-induced damage in the kidneys and the skeletal system could be detected among 100 ringed seals from Northwest Greenland. The cadmium concentrations in the kidney cortex ranged from 0 to 248 microg/g wet weight (mean=44.5, N=100) in the 99 kidneys examined. Experience from cadmium-poisoned humans and laboratory mammals indicates that concentrations above 50-200 microg/g wet wt. may induce histopathological changes. Overall, 31 of the ringed seals had cadmium concentrations in the kidney cortex above 50 microg/g wet wt., 11 had concentrations above 100 and one had a concentration above 200 microg/g wet wt. Obvious histopathological changes (categorised mainly as glomerulonephritis) were found in 10 of the seals; however, none of these changes could be attributed to cadmium-induced renal damage (mainly tubulopathy) as described for other species. Damage to the proximal kidney tubules is known to induce demineralisation of the skeletal system (Fanconi's syndrome). Therefore, the three lowest lumbar vertebrae were scanned in 91 seals to measure the content of calcium. The 10 cases of nephropathy could neither be linked to the degree of mineralisation of the skeleton nor to the cadmium concentrations. Furthermore, the degree of mineralisation of the skeleton was not correlated with the cadmium concentration, age or sex. It can therefore be concluded that despite high levels of cadmium, none of the ringed seals showed any signs of cadmium-induced nephropathy or osteodystrophy. This might be explained by the composition of the ringed seals diet, which contains high levels of vitamin D, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, selenium and protein. These elements are all likely to counteract cadmium-induced damage. It is speculated that ringed seal are not particularly vulnerable to osteodystrophy, due to their continuous growth (bone mineralisation) throughout life and the oestrogen hormonal activity of females throughout life.  相似文献
