Dynamic crack propagation of composites is investigated in this paper based on the recent advances and development of orthotropic enrichment functions within the framework of partition of unity and the extended finite element method (XFEM). The method allows for analysis of the whole crack propagation pattern on an unaltered finite element mesh, defined independent of the existence of any predefined crack or its propagation path. A relatively simple, though efficient formulation is implemented, which consists of using a dynamic crack initiation toughness, a crack orientation along the maximum circumferential stress, and a simple equation to presume the crack speed. Dynamic stress intensity factors (DSIFs) are evaluated by means of the domain separation integral method. The governing elastodynamics equation is first transformed into a standard weak formulation and is then discretized into an XFEM system of time dependent equations, to be solved by the unconditionally stable Newmark time integration scheme. A number of benchmark and test problems are simulated and the results are compared with available reference results.  相似文献

In this paper, an incremental‐secant modulus iteration scheme using the extended/generalized finite element method (XFEM) is proposed for the simulation of cracking process in quasi‐brittle materials described by cohesive crack models whose softening law is composed of linear segments. The leading term of the displacement asymptotic field at the tip of a cohesive crack (which ensures a displacement discontinuity normal to the cohesive crack face) is used as the enrichment function in the XFEM. The opening component of the same field is also used as the initial guess opening profile of a newly extended cohesive segment in the simulation of cohesive crack propagation. A statically admissible stress recovery (SAR) technique is extended to cohesive cracks with special treatment of non‐homogeneous boundary tractions. The application of locally normalized co‐ordinates to eliminate possible ill‐conditioning of SAR, and the influence of different weight functions on SAR are also studied. Several mode I cracking problems in quasi‐brittle materials with linear and bilinear softening laws are analysed to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed scheme, as well as the characteristics of global responses and local fields obtained numerically by the XFEM. The extended finite element method (XFEM) is further improved for fracture analysis of composite laminates containing interlaminar delaminations. New set of bimaterial orthotropic enrichment functions are developed and utilized in XFEM analysis of linear‐elastic fracture mechanics of layered composites. Interlaminar crack‐tip enrichment functions are derived from analytical asymptotic displacement fields around a traction‐free interfacial crack. Also, heaviside and weak discontinuity enrichment functions are utilized in modeling discontinuous fields across interface cracks and bimaterial weak discontinuities, respectively. In this procedure, elements containing a crack‐tip or strong/weak discontinuities are not required to conform to those geometries. In addition, the same mesh can be used to analyze different interlaminar cracks or delamination propagation. The domain interaction integral approach is also adopted in order to numerically evaluate the mixed‐mode stress intensity factors. A number of benchmark tests are simulated to assess the performance of the proposed approach and the results are compared with available reference results. The conventional extended finite element method (XFEM) is enhanced in this paper to simulate dynamic crack branching, which is a top challenge issue in fracture mechanics and finite element method. XFEM uses the enriched shape functions with special characteristics to represent the discontinuity in computation field. In order to describe branched cracks, it is necessary to set up the additional enrichment. Here we have developed two kinds of branched elements, namely the “element crossed by two separated cracks” and “element embedded by a junction”. Another series of enriched degrees of freedom are introduced to seize the additional discontinuity in the elements. A shifted enrichment scheme is used to avoid the treatment of blending element. Correspondingly a new mass lumping method is developed for the branched elements based on the kinetic conservation. The derivation of the mass matrix of a four-node quadrilateral element which contains two strong discontinuities is specially presented. Then by choosing crack speed as the branching criterion, the branching process of a single mode I crack is simulated. The results including the branching angle and propagation routes are compared with that obtained by the conventionally used element deletion method.  相似文献

A recent approach to fracture modeling has combined the extended finite element method (XFEM) with cohesive zone models. Most studies have used simplified enrichment functions to represent the strong discontinuity but have lacked an analytical basis to represent the displacement gradients in the vicinity of the cohesive crack. In this study enrichment functions based upon an existing analytical investigation of the cohesive crack problem are proposed. These functions have the potential of representing displacement gradients in the vicinity of the cohesive crack and allow the crack to incrementally advance across each element. Key aspects of the corresponding numerical formulation and enrichment functions are discussed. A parameter study for a simple mode I model problem is presented to evaluate if quasi‐static crack propagation can be accurately followed with the proposed formulation. The effects of mesh refinement and mesh orientation are considered. Propagation of the cohesive zone tip and crack tip, time variation of the cohesive zone length, and crack profiles are examined. The analysis results indicate that the analytically based enrichment functions can accurately track the cohesive crack propagation of a mode I crack independent of mesh orientation. A mixed mode example further demonstrates the potential of the formulation. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, we replace the asymptotic enrichments around the crack tip in the extended finite element method (XFEM) with the semi‐analytical solution obtained by the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM). The proposed method does not require special numerical integration technique to compute the stiffness matrix, and it improves the capability of the XFEM to model cracks in homogeneous and/or heterogeneous materials without a priori knowledge of the asymptotic solutions. A Heaviside enrichment is used to represent the jump across the discontinuity surface. We call the method as the extended SBFEM. Numerical results presented for a few benchmark problems in the context of linear elastic fracture mechanics show that the proposed method yields accurate results with improved condition number. A simple code is annexed to compute the terms in the stiffness matrix, which can easily be integrated in any existing FEM/XFEM code. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The aim of the paper is to study the capabilities of the extended finite element method (XFEM) to achieve accurate computations in non‐smooth situations such as crack problems. Although the XFEM method ensures a weaker error than classical finite element methods, the rate of convergence is not improved when the mesh parameter h is going to zero because of the presence of a singularity. The difficulty can be overcome by modifying the enrichment of the finite element basis with the asymptotic crack tip displacement solutions as well as with the Heaviside function. Numerical simulations show that the modified XFEM method achieves an optimal rate of convergence (i.e. like in a standard finite element method for a smooth problem). In this work, the extended finite element method (XFEM) is for the first time coupled with face‐based strain‐smoothing technique to solve three‐dimensional fracture problems. This proposed method, which is called face‐based smoothed XFEM here, is expected to combine both the advantages of XFEM and strain‐smoothing technique. In XFEM, arbitrary crack geometry can be modeled and crack advance can be simulated without remeshing. Strain‐smoothing technique can eliminate the integration of singular term over the volume around the crack front, thanks to the transformation of volume integration into area integration. Special smoothing scheme is implemented in the crack front smoothing domain. Three examples are presented to test the accuracy, efficiency, and convergence rate of the face‐based smoothed XFEM. From the results, it is clear that smoothing technique can improve the performance of XFEM for three‐dimensional fracture problems. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Progressive damage and failure in composites are generally complex and involve multiple interacting failure modes. Depending on factors such as lay-up sequence, loading and specimen configurations, failure may be dominated by extensive matrix crack-delamination interactions, which are very difficult to model accurately. The present study further develops an integrated extended finite element method (XFEM) and cohesive element (CE) method for three-dimensional (3D) delamination migration in multi-directional composite laminates, and validates the results with experiment performed on a double-cantilever beam (DCB). The plies are modeled by using XFEM brick elements, while the interfaces are modeled using CEs. The interaction between matrix crack and delamination is achieved by enriching the nodes of cohesive element. The mechanisms of matrix fracture and delamination migration are explained and discussed. Matrix crack initiation and propagation can be predicted and delamination migration is also observed in the results. The algorithm provides for the prediction of matrix crack angles through the ply thickness. The proposed method provides a platform for the realistic simulation of progressive failure of composite laminates.  相似文献

This paper is devoted to the extraction of the dynamic stress intensity factor (DSIF) for structures containing multiple discontinuities (cracks, voids and inclusions) by developing the extended finite element method (XFEM). In this method, four types of enrichment functions are used in the framework of the partition of unity to model interface discontinuity within the classical finite element method. In this procedure, elements that include a crack segment, the boundary of a void or the boundary of an inclusion are not required to conform to discontinuous edges. The DSIF is evaluated by the interaction integral. After the effectiveness of the implemented XFEM program is verified, the effects of voids, inclusions and other cracks on the DSIF of a stationary major crack are investigated by using XFEM. The results show that the dynamic effects have an influence on the path independence of the interaction integral, and these voids, inclusions and other cracks have a significant effect on the DSIF of the major crack.  相似文献

We present a method for simulating quasistatic crack propagation in 2‐D which combines the extended finite element method (XFEM) with a general algorithm for cutting triangulated domains, and introduce a simple yet general and flexible quadrature rule based on the same geometric algorithm. The combination of these methods gives several advantages. First, the cutting algorithm provides a flexible and systematic way of determining material connectivity, which is required by the XFEM enrichment functions. Also, our integration scheme is straightforward to implement and accurate, without requiring a triangulation that incorporates the new crack edges or the addition of new degrees of freedom to the system. The use of this cutting algorithm and integration rule allows for geometrically complicated domains and complex crack patterns. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In the present paper an extended finite element method (XFEM) containing strong discontinuity within elements is introduced and implemented in the commercial general purpose software ABAQUS. The algorithm allows introducing a new crack surface at arbitrary locations and directions in elements. To consider fatigue crack nucleation and propagation in quasi-brittle materials the XFEM is combined with a cyclic cohesive model. Accumulative material damage is described by separate evolution equations. The crack path is completely independent of the mesh structure but determined by the mixed-mode loading cases. Numerical simulations illustrate the ability of this method to simulate fracture with unstructured meshes. The computational results agree with known fracture experiment data. Known fatigue observations can be predicted using the present model.  相似文献

We present a three‐dimensional vector level set method coupled to a recently developed stable extended finite element method (XFEM). We further investigate a new enrichment approach for XFEM adopting discontinuous linear enrichment functions in place of the asymptotic near‐tip functions. Through the vector level set method, level set values for propagating cracks are obtained via simple geometrical operations, eliminating the need for solution of differential evolution equations. The first XFEM variant ensures optimal convergence rates by means of geometrical enrichment, ie, the use of enriched elements in a fixed volume around the crack front, without giving rise to conditioning problems. The linear enrichment approach, significantly simplifies implementation and reduces the computational cost associated with numerical integration, while providing nonoptimal convergence rates similar to standard finite elements. The 2 dicretization schemes are tested for different benchmark problems, and their combination to the vector level set method is verified for nonplanar crack propagation problems.  相似文献

An eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) is presented that can accurately predict the stress intensity factors (SIFs) for thermoelastic cracks. The method uses higher order terms of the thermoelastic asymptotic crack tip fields to enrich the approximation space of the temperature and displacement fields in the vicinity of crack tips—away from the crack tip the step function is used. It is shown that improved accuracy is obtained by using the higher order crack tip enrichments and that the benefit of including such terms is greater for thermoelastic problems than for either purely elastic or steady state heat transfer problems. The computation of SIFs directly from the XFEM degrees of freedom and using the interaction integral is studied. Directly computed SIFs are shown to be significantly less accurate than those computed using the interaction integral. Furthermore, the numerical examples suggest that the directly computed SIFs do not converge to the exact SIFs values, but converge roughly to values near the exact result. Numerical simulations of straight cracks show that with the higher order enrichment scheme, the energy norm converges monotonically with increasing number of asymptotic enrichment terms and with decreasing element size. For curved crack there is no further increase in accuracy when more than four asymptotic enrichment terms are used and the numerical simulations indicate that the SIFs obtained directly from the XFEM degrees of freedom are inaccurate, while those obtained using the interaction integral remain accurate for small integration domains. It is recommended in general that at least four higher order terms of the asymptotic solution be used to enrich the temperature and displacement fields near the crack tips and that the J- or interaction integral should always be used to compute the SIFs.  相似文献

An Erratum has been published for this article in International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering 2005, 63(8): 1228. We present a new formulation and a numerical procedure for the quasi‐static analysis of three‐dimensional crack propagation in brittle and quasi‐brittle solids. The extended finite element method (XFEM) is combined with linear tetrahedral elements. A viscosity‐regularized continuum damage constitutive model is used and coupled with the XFEM formulation resulting in a regularized ‘crack‐band’ version of XFEM. The evolving discontinuity surface is discretized through a C0 surface formed by the union of the triangles and quadrilaterals that separate each cracked element in two. The element's properties allow a closed form integration and a particularly efficient implementation allowing large‐scale 3D problems to be studied. Several examples of crack propagation are shown, illustrating the good results that can be achieved. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
