Thermodynamic data from diffusion couples—I

A non linear least squares based method is presented to estimate activity data from measured interdiffusivity data for isomorphous binary metals. The interdiffusion coefficient is modelled as a product of two functions, one representing the thermodynamic contributions and another the contribution of the phenomenological coefficients. The proposed method factors the interdiffusion coefficient into its two constituent functions. This leads to the existence of non unique solutions and hence yields a set of possible solutions which on an activity-composition diagram exhibit positive and negative deviations from ideality. One additional piece of information, such as the experimentally measured activity at a particular composition or the slope of the Henry's law line at infinite dilution, is needed to select the correct solution. The method successfully predicted the thermodynamics of the CoNi system from calculations bases on the interdiffusion coefficient.     

Crack deflection processes—I. Theory

A fracture mechanics approach has been used to predict fracture toughness increases due to crack deflection around second phase particles. The analysis is based on a determination of the initial tilt and the maximum twist of the crack front between particles, which provides the basis for evaluating the deflection-induced reduction in crack driving force. Features found to be important in determining the toughness increase include the volume fraction of second phase, the particle morphology and aspect ratio, and the distribution of interparticle spacing. Predictions are compared with expected surface area increases.

This article, as well as the publication of a previously unpublished personal letter written by Jacques Derrida in his youth, relate to my thinking and research regarding the existential questions raised by philosophy and the act of suicide. Both the personal letter and the correspondence between Derrida and his close friend Michel Monory invite us to reflect on death and the enigma that suicidal ideation can take when presenting itself to a subject, while at the same time they provide us with valuable information about the origins of Derrida's oeuvre to come. Giving us a glimpse into the universe of a young tormented soul, who has already dreamed of “a book of extraordinary philosophy,” Jacques Derrida confides some of his philosophical, psychological, and—interesting in light of what we know will be his future—autobiographical reflections to his friend. I situate the context of this correspondence more precisely and give shape to the distant, buried form of what will have been friendship allowing us to gain a greater understanding of the act of autobiography, as well as the autobiographical pact—as Philippe Lejeune has theorized it—and how it relates to the work of mourning. Cellular spacings—I. Steady-state growth

Directional solidification studies were carried out in the succinonitrile-acetone and pivalic acid-ethanol systems in order to study the variation in average cellular spacing with velocity. Three distinct behaviors were observed under steady-state growth conditions. For velocities near the critical velocity for planar interface instability, cellular spacing decreased with an increase in velocity. However, at velocities near the cell-dendrite transition the cell spacing increased sharply. Beyond this transition region, the cell or dendrite spacing decreased with further increases in velocity. These experimental observations have been explained by using the current theoretical models of cell-dendrite growth. In addition, a finite band of velocities was identified in which both cellular and dendritic structures were found to be stable. A hysteresis effect was observed in the cell-dendrite transition indicating that the cell-dendrite bifurcation is subcritical.     

PAC-Membrane Filtration Process.?I: Model Development

Adsorption is modeled when powdered activated carbon (PAC) is applied in continuous-flow reactors followed by membrane filtration units operated without carbon wastage between backwash events. Four reactor configurations are studied: (1) A membrane reactor dosed with a step input of PAC; (2) a continuous-flow stirred tank reactor dosed with a step input of PAC and followed by a membrane reactor; (3) a plug-flow reactor dosed with a step input of PAC and followed by a membrane reactor; and (4) a membrane reactor dosed with a pulse input of PAC at the beginning of the filtration cycle. A steady-state operation is considered to describe the adsorption process through the continuous-flow stirred tank reactor and plug-flow reactor, whereas adsorption in the membrane reactor is modeled as a non-steady-state process. Adsorption kinetics is assumed to occur by homogeneous surface diffusion, and adsorption equilibrium is described with the Freundlich isotherm model. Analytical solutions of the homogeneous surface diffusion model with no external mass transfer limitation are used to evaluate adsorbate concentrations in the solid phase as a function of time. Part II of this study presents model simulations and verification with experimental data obtained in a bench-scale apparatus.
