How to reduce power consumption of data centers has received worldwide attention. By combining the energy-aware data placement policy and locality-aware multi-job scheduling scheme, we propose a new multi-objective bi-level programming model based on MapReduce to improve the energy efficiency of servers. First, the variation of energy consumption with the performance of servers is taken into account; second, data locality can be adjusted dynamically according to current network state; last but not least, considering that task-scheduling strategies depend directly on data placement policies, we formulate the problem as an integer bi-level programming model. In order to solve the model efficiently, specific-design encoding and decoding methods are introduced. Based on these, a new effective multi-objective genetic algorithm based on MOEA/D is proposed. As there are usually tens of thousands of tasks to be scheduled in the cloud, this is a large-scale optimization problem and a local search operator is designed to accelerate convergent speed of the proposed algorithm. Finally, numerical experiments indicate the effectiveness of the proposed model and algorithm.  相似文献

Scheduling is essentially a decision-making process that enables resource sharing among a number of activities by determining their execution order on the set of available resources. The emergence of distributed systems brought new challenges on scheduling in computer systems, including clusters, grids, and more recently clouds. On the other hand, the plethora of research makes it hard for both newcomers researchers to understand the relationship among different scheduling problems and strategies proposed in the literature, which hampers the identification of new and relevant research avenues. In this paper we introduce a classification of the scheduling problem in distributed systems by presenting a taxonomy that incorporates recent developments, especially those in cloud computing. We review the scheduling literature to corroborate the taxonomy and analyze the interest in different branches of the proposed taxonomy. Finally, we identify relevant future directions in scheduling for distributed systems.  相似文献

With the development of Internet technology and human computing, the computing environment has changed dramatically over the last three decades. Cloud computing emerges as a paradigm of Internet computing in which dynamical, scalable and often virtualized resources are provided as services. With virtualization technology, cloud computing offers diverse services (such as virtual computing, virtual storage, virtual bandwidth, etc.) for the public by means of multi-tenancy mode. Although users are enjoying the capabilities of super-computing and mass storage supplied by cloud computing, cloud security still remains as a hot spot problem, which is in essence the trust management between data owners and storage service providers. In this paper, we propose a data coloring method based on cloud watermarking to recognize and ensure mutual reputations. The experimental results show that the robustness of reverse cloud generator can guarantee users embedded social reputation identifications. Hence, our work provides a reference solution to the critical problem of cloud security.  相似文献

Multimedia communication research and development often requires computationally intensive simulations in order to develop and investigate the performance of new optimization algorithms. Depending on the simulations, they may require even a few days to test an adequate set of conditions due to the complexity of the algorithms. The traditional approach to speed up this type of relatively small simulations, which require several develop–simulate–reconfigure cycles, is indeed to run them in parallel on a few computers and leaving them idle when developing the technique for the next simulation cycle. This work proposes a new cost-effective framework based on cloud computing for accelerating the development process, in which resources are obtained on demand and paid only for their actual usage. Issues are addressed both analytically and practically running actual test cases, i.e., simulations of video communications on a packet lossy network, using a commercial cloud computing service. A software framework has also been developed to simplify the management of the virtual machines in the cloud. Results show that it is economically convenient to use the considered cloud computing service, especially in terms of reduced development time and costs, with respect to a solution using dedicated computers, when the development time is longer than one hour. If more development time is needed between simulations, the economic advantage progressively reduces as the computational complexity of the simulation increases.  相似文献

Hybrid Clouds couple the scalability offered by public Clouds with the greater control supplied by private ones. A (hybrid) Cloud broker acting as an intermediary between users and providers of public Cloud services, may support customers in the selection of the most suitable offers, optionally adding the provisioning of dedicated services with higher levels of quality. The paper presents a Cloud brokering algorithm delivering services with different level of non-functional requirements, to the private or public resources, on the basis of different scheduling criteria. With the objective of maximize user satisfaction and broker’s revenues, the algorithm pursues profit increases by reducing energy costs, through the adoption of energy saving mechanisms. A simulation model is used to evaluate performance in terms of broker’s revenue, user satisfaction and energy behavior of various allocation policies. Simulation results show that differences among policies depend on system loads and that the use of turn on and off techniques greatly improves energy savings at low and medium load rates.  相似文献

The first hurdle for carrying out research on cloud computing is the development of a suitable research platform. While cloud computing is primarily commercially-driven and commercial clouds are naturally realistic as research platforms, they do not provide to the scientist enough control for dependable experiments. On the other hand, research carried out using simulation, mathematical modelling or small prototypes may not necessarily be applicable in real clouds of larger scale. Previous surveys on cloud performance and energy-efficiency have focused on the technical mechanisms proposed to address these issues. Researchers of various disciplines and expertise can use them to identify areas where they can contribute with innovative technical solutions. This paper is meant to be complementary to these surveys. By providing the landscape of research platforms for cloud systems, our aim is to help researchers identify a suitable approach for modelling, simulation or prototype implementation on which they can develop and evaluate their technical solutions.

In cloud computing environments in software as a service (SaaS) level, interoperability refers to the ability of SaaS systems on one cloud provider to communicate with SaaS systems on another cloud provider. One of the most important barriers to the adoption of SaaS systems in cloud computing environments is interoperability. A common tactic for enabling interoperability is the use of an interoperability framework or model. During the past few years, in cloud SaaS level, various interoperability frameworks and models have been developed to provide interoperability between systems. The syntactic interoperability of SaaS systems have already been intensively researched. However, not enough consideration has been given to semantic interoperability issues. Achieving semantic interoperability is a challenge within the world of SaaS in cloud computing environments. Therefore, a semantic interoperability framework for SaaS systems in cloud computing environments is needed. We develop a semantic interoperability framework for cloud SaaS systems. The capabilities and value of service oriented architecture for semantic interoperability within cloud SaaS systems have been studied and demonstrated. This paper is accomplished through a number of steps (research methodology). It begins with a study on related works in the literature. Then, problem statement and research objectives are explained. In the next step, semantic interoperability requirements for SaaS systems in cloud computing environments that are needed to support are analyzed. The details of the proposed semantic interoperability framework for SaaS systems in cloud computing environments are presented. It includes the design of the proposed semantic interoperability framework. Finally, the evaluation methods of the semantic interoperability framework are elaborated. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed semantic interoperability framework for SaaS systems in cloud computing environments, extensive experimentation and statistical analysis have been performed. The experiments and statistical analysis specify that the proposed semantic interoperability framework for cloud SaaS systems is able to establish semantic interoperability between cloud SaaS systems in a more efficient way. It is concluded that using the proposed framework, there is a significant improvement in the effectiveness of semantic interoperability of SaaS systems in cloud computing environments.  相似文献

Nowadays, in order to deal with the increasingly complex applications on mobile devices, mobile cloud offloading techniques have been studied extensively to meet the ever-increasing energy requirements. In this study, an offloading decision method is investigated to minimize the energy consumption of mobile device with an acceptable time delay and communication quality. In general, mobile devices can execute a sequence of tasks in parallel. In the proposed offloading decision method, only parts of the tasks are offloaded for task characteristics to save the energy of multi-devices. The issue of the offloading decision is formulated as an NP-hard 0–1 nonlinear integer programming problem with time deadline and transmission error rate constraints. Through decision-variable relaxation from the integer to the real domain, this problem can be transformed as a continuous convex optimization. Based on Lagrange duality and the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker condition, a solution with coupled terms is derived to determine the priority of tasks for offloading. Then, an iterative decoupling algorithm with high efficiency is proposed to obtain near-optimal offloading decisions for energy saving. Simulation results demonstrate that considerable energy can be saved via the proposed method in various mobile cloud scenarios.  相似文献

Cloud computing has gained popularity in recent years delivering various services as cost-effective platforms. However, the increasing energy consumption needs to be addressed in order to preserve the cost-effectiveness of these systems. In this work, we target the storage infrastructure in a cloud system and introduce several energy efficient storage node allocation methods by exploiting the metadata heterogeneity of cloud users. Our proposed methods preserve load balance on demand and switch inactive nodes into low-energy modes to save energy. We provide a mathematical model to estimate the outcome of proposed methods and conduct theoretical and simulative analyses using real-world workloads.  相似文献

ContextCloud computing is a thriving paradigm that supports an efficient way to provide IT services by introducing on-demand services and flexible computing resources. However, significant adoption of cloud services is being hindered by security issues that are inherent to this new paradigm. In previous work, we have proposed ISGcloud, a security governance framework to tackle cloud security matters in a comprehensive manner whilst being aligned with an enterprise’s strategy.ObjectiveAlthough a significant body of literature has started to build up related to security aspects of cloud computing, the literature fails to report on evidence and real applications of security governance frameworks designed for cloud computing environments. This paper introduces a detailed application of ISGCloud into a real life case study of a Spanish public organisation, which utilises a cloud storage service in a critical security deployment.MethodThe empirical evaluation has followed a formal process, which includes the definition of research questions previously to the framework’s application. We describe ISGcloud process and attempt to answer these questions gathering results through direct observation and from interviews with related personnel.ResultsThe novelty of the paper is twofold: on the one hand, it presents one of the first applications, in the literature, of a cloud security governance framework to a real-life case study along with an empirical evaluation of the framework that proves its validity; on the other hand, it demonstrates the usefulness of the framework and its impact to the organisation.ConclusionAs discussed on the paper, the application of ISGCloud has resulted in the organisation in question achieving its security governance objectives, minimising the security risks of its storage service and increasing security awareness among its users.  相似文献

With the recent emergence of cloud computing based services on the Internet, MapReduce and distributed file systems like HDFS have emerged as the paradigm of choice for developing large scale data intensive applications. Given the scale at which these applications are deployed, minimizing power consumption of these clusters can significantly cut down operational costs and reduce their carbon footprint—thereby increasing the utility from a provider’s point of view. This paper addresses energy conservation for clusters of nodes that run MapReduce jobs. The algorithm dynamically reconfigures the cluster based on the current workload and turns cluster nodes on or off when the average cluster utilization rises above or falls below administrator specified thresholds, respectively. We evaluate our algorithm using the GridSim toolkit and our results show that the proposed algorithm achieves an energy reduction of 33% under average workloads and up to 54% under low workloads.  相似文献

There is a growing recognition of the importance of cloud computing for large-scale and data-intensive applications. The distinguishing features of cloud computing and their relationship to other distributed computing paradigms are described, as are the strengths and weaknesses of the approach. We review the use made to date of cloud computing for molecular modelling projects and the availability of front ends for molecular modelling applications. Although the use of cloud computing technologies for molecular modelling is still in its infancy, we demonstrate its potential by presenting several case studies. Rapid growth can be expected as more applications become available and costs continue to fall; cloud computing can make a major contribution not just in terms of the availability of on-demand computing power, but could also spur innovation in the development of novel approaches that utilize that capacity in more effective ways.  相似文献

In recent years, an increasing number of data-intensive applications deal with continuously changing data objects (CCDOs), such as data streams from sensors and tracking devices. In these applications, the underlying data management system must support new types of spatiotemporal queries that refer to the spatiotemporal trajectories of the CCDOs. In contrast to traditional data objects, CCDOs have continuously changing attributes. Therefore, the spatiotemporal relation between any two CCDOs can change over time. This problem can be more complicated, since the CCDO trajectories are associated with a degree of uncertainty at every point in time. This is due to the fact that databases can only be discretely updated. The paper formally presents a comprehensive framework for managing CCDOs with insights into the spatiotemporal uncertainty problem and presents an original parallel-processing solution for efficiently managing the uncertainty using the map-reduce platform of cloud computing.  相似文献

As the sizes of IT infrastructure continue to grow, cloud computing is a natural extension of virtualisation technologies that enable scalable management of virtual machines over a plethora of physically connected systems. The so-called virtualisation-based cloud computing paradigm offers a practical approach to green IT/clouds, which emphasise the construction and deployment of scalable, energy-efficient network software applications (NetApp) by virtue of improved utilisation of the underlying resources. The latter is typically achieved through increased sharing of hardware and data in a multi-tenant cloud architecture/environment and, as such, accentuates the critical requirement for enhanced security services as an integrated component of the virtual infrastructure management strategy. This paper analyses the key security challenges faced by contemporary green cloud computing environments, and proposes a virtualisation security assurance architecture, CyberGuarder, which is designed to address several key security problems within the ‘green’ cloud computing context. In particular, CyberGuarder provides three different kinds of services; namely, a virtual machine security service, a virtual network security service and a policy based trust management service. Specifically, the proposed virtual machine security service incorporates a number of new techniques which include (1) a VMM-based integrity measurement approach for NetApp trusted loading, (2) a multi-granularity NetApp isolation mechanism to enable OS user isolation, and (3) a dynamic approach to virtual machine and network isolation for multiple NetApp’s based on energy-efficiency and security requirements. Secondly, a virtual network security service has been developed successfully to provide an adaptive virtual security appliance deployment in a NetApp execution environment, whereby traditional security services such as IDS and firewalls can be encapsulated as VM images and deployed over a virtual security network in accordance with the practical configuration of the virtualised infrastructure. Thirdly, a security service providing policy based trust management is proposed to facilitate access control to the resources pool and a trust federation mechanism to support/optimise task privacy and cost requirements across multiple resource pools. Preliminary studies of these services have been carried out on our iVIC platform, with promising results. As part of our ongoing research in large-scale, energy-efficient/green cloud computing, we are currently developing a virtual laboratory for our campus courses using the virtualisation infrastructure of iVIC, which incorporates the important results and experience of CyberGuarder in a practical context.  相似文献

Cloud Computing can be seen as one of the latest major evolution in computing offering unlimited possibility to use ICT in various domains: business, smart cities, medicine, environmental computing, mobile systems, design and implementation of cyber-infrastructures. The recent expansion of Cloud Systems has led to adapting resource management solutions for large number of wide distributed and heterogeneous datacenters. The adaptive methods used in this context are oriented on: self-stabilizing, self-organizing and autonomic systems; dynamic, adaptive and machine learning based distributed algorithms; fault tolerance, reliability, availability of distributed systems. The pay-per-use economic model of Cloud Computing comes with a new challenge: maximizing the profit for service providers, minimizing the total cost for customers and being friendly with the environment. This special issue presents advances in virtual machine assignment and placement, multi-objective and multi-constraints job scheduling, resource management in federated Clouds and in heterogeneous environments, dynamic topology for data distribution, workflow performance improvement, energy efficiency techniques and assurance of Service Level Agreements.  相似文献
